Abstract:Z. Zhou et al. proved that in a Teichmuller equivalence class, there exists an extremal quasiconformal mapping with a weakly non-decreasable dilatation. In this paper, we prove that in an infinitesimal equivalence class, there exists a weakly non-decreasable extremal Beltrami differential.

Abstract:In this paper, it is shown that if an extremal quasiconformal mapping f is of landslide type, then there exists another extremal quasiconformal mapping (f) over tilde in the Teichmuller equivalence class [f] such that the Beltrami differential of (f) over tilde is identical to a given Beltrami differential on the neighborhood of a landslide point. The key tool of the proof is the Reich-Strebel inequality.

Abstract:AbstractSuppose that [μ]T(Δ) is a point of the universal Teichmüller space T(Δ). In 1998, Božin, Lakic, Marković, and Mateljević showed that there exists μ such that μ is uniquely extremal in [μ]T(Δ) and has a nonconstant modulus. It is a natural problem whether there is always an extremal Beltrami coefficient of constant modulus in [μ]T(Δ) if [μ]T(Δ) admits infinitely many extremal Beltrami coefficients; the purpose of this paper is to show that the answer is negative. An infinitesimal version is also obtained. Extremal sets of extremal Beltrami coefficients are considered, and an open problem is proposed. The key tool of our argument is Reich’s construction theorem.

Abstract:In this paper, it is shown that some necessary characteristic conditions for unique extremality obtained by Zhu and Chen are also sufficient and some sufficient ones by them actually imply that the uniquely extremal Beltrami differentials have a constant modulus. Abstract:In this paper, it is shown that a weakly non-decreasable dilatation in an infinitesimal Teichmüller equivalence class can be not a non-decreasable one. As an application, we prove that if an infinitesimal equivalence class contains more than one extremal dilatation, then it contains infinitely many weakly non-decreasable extremal dilatations.

Abstract:Let R be a hyperbolic Riemann surface. Suppose the Teichmuller space T(R) of R is infinite-dimensional. Let mu be an extremal Beltrami coefficient on R and let [mu] be the point in T(R). In this note, it is shown that if mu is not uniquely extremal, then there exists an extremal Beltrarni coefficient v in [mu] with non-constant modulus. As an application, it follows, as is well known, that there exist infinitely many geodesics between [mu] and the base point [0] in T(R) if mu is non-uniquely extremal.

Abstract:We show that for many strata of Abelian differentials in low genus the sum of Lyapunov exponents for the Teichmueller geodesic flow is the same for all Teichmueller curves in that stratum, hence equal to the sum of Lyapunov exponents for the whole stratum. This behavior is due to the disjointness property of Teichmueller curves with various geometrically defined divisors on moduli spaces of curves.

Abstract:Let f be a Teichmuller self-mapping of the unit disk Delta corresponding to a holomorphic quadratic differential phi. If phi satisfies the growth condition A(r, phi) = integralintegral(\jz\< r) vertical bar phi vertical bar dxdy = O((1 - r)(-s)) (as r -> 1), for any given s > 0, then f is extremal, and for any given a 2 ( 0; 1), there exists a subsequence {n(k)} of N such that {phi(a(1/2nk)z)/integralintegral(Delta)\phi(a(1/2nk)z)\dxdy} is a Hamilton sequence. In addition, it is shown that there exists ' with bounded Bers norm such that the corresponding Teichmuller mapping is not extremal, which gives a negative answer to a conjecture by Huang in 1995.

Abstract:Given a quasi-symmetric self-homeomorphism h of the unit circle Sl, let Q(h) be the set of all quasiconformal mappings with the boundary correspondence h. In this paper, it is shown that there exists certain quasi-symmetric homeomorphism h, such that Q(h) satisfies either of the conditions,(1) Q(h) admits a quasiconformal mapping that is both uniquely locally-extremal and uniquely extremal-non-decreasable instead of being uniquely extremal;(2) Q(h) contains infinitely many quasiconformal mappings each of which has an extremal non-decreasable dilatation.An infinitesimal version of this result is also obtained.

Abstract:Abstract In this article we show that for every finite area hyperbolic surface X of type ( g , n ) {(g,n)} and any harmonic Beltrami differential μ on X, then the magnitude of μ at any point of small injectivity radius is uniform bounded from above by the ratio of the Weil–Petersson norm of μ over the square root of the systole of X up to a uniform positive constant multiplication. We apply the uniform bound above to show that the Weil–Petersson Ricci curvature, restricted at any hyperbolic surface of short systole in the moduli space, is uniformly bounded from below by the negative reciprocal of the systole up to a uniform positive constant multiplication. As an application, we show that the average total Weil–Petersson scalar curvature over the moduli space is uniformly comparable to - g {-g} as the genus g goes to infinity.
On Nonuniqueness of Geodesics in Asymptotic Teichmüller Space

Abstract:In an infinite-dimensional Teichmüller space, it is known that the geodesic connecting two points can be unique or not. In this paper, we study the situation on the geodesic in the universal asymptotic Teichmüller space \(AT(\Delta )\). We introduce the notions of substantial point and non-substantial point in \(AT(\Delta )\). The set of all non-substantial points is open and dense in \(AT(\Delta )\). It is shown that there are infinitely many geodesics joining a non-substantial point to the basepoint. Although we have difficulty in dealing with the substantial points, we give an example to show that there are infinitely many geodesics connecting a certain substantial point and the basepoint. It is also shown that there are always infinitely many straight lines containing two points in \(AT(\Delta )\).

Abstract:In 2014, Gromov vaguely conjectured that a sequence of manifolds with nonnegative scalar curvature should have a subsequence which converges in some weak sense to a limit space with some generalized notion of nonnegative scalar curvature. The conjecture has been made precise at an IAS Emerging Topics meeting: requiring that the sequence be three dimensional with uniform upper bounds on diameter and volume, and a positive uniform lower bound on MinA, which is the minimum area of a closed minimal surface in the manifold. Here we present a sequence of warped product manifolds with warped circles over standard spheres, that have circular fibres over the poles whose length diverges to infinity, that satisfy the hypotheses of this IAS conjecture. We prove this sequence converges in the W 1 , p sense for p < 2 to an extreme limit space that has nonnegative scalar curvature in the distributional sense as defined by Lee-LeFloch and that the total distributional scalar curvature converges. This paper only requires expertise in smooth Riemannian Geometry, smooth minimal surfaces, and Sobolev Spaces. In a second paper, requiring expertise in metric geometry, the first two authors prove intrinsic flat and Gromov–Hausdorff convergence of our sequence to this extreme limit space and investigate its geometric properties.
