Abstract:We provide combinatorial tools inspired by work of Warnaar to give combinatorial interpretations of the sum sides of the Andrews-Gordon and Bressoud identities. More precisely, we give an explicit weight- and length-preserving bijection between sets related to integer partitions, which provides these interpretations. In passing, we discover the $q$-series version of an identity of Kurşungöz, similar to the Bressoud identity but with opposite parity conditions, which we prove combinatorially using the classical Bressoud identity and our bijection. We also use this bijection to prove combinatorially many identities, some known and other new, of the Andrews-Gordon and Bressoud type.

Abstract:We construct Andrews-Gordon type evidently positive series as generating functions for the partitions satisfying the difference conditions imposed by Capparelli's identities and Göllnitz-Gordon identities. The construction involves building base partitions, and move parts around subject to certain rules. Some missing cases are also considered, but no new identities are given.

Bilateral Bailey lattices and Andrews-Gordon type identities

Abstract:We show that the Bailey lattice can be extended to a bilateral version in just a few lines from the bilateral Bailey lemma, using a very simple lemma transforming bilateral Bailey pairs related to $a$ into bilateral Bailey pairs related to $a/q$. Using this lemma and similar ones, we give bilateral versions and simple proofs of other (new and known) Bailey lattices, among which a Bailey lattice of Warnaar and the inverses of Bailey lattices of Lovejoy. As consequences of our bilateral point of view, we derive new $m$-versions of the Andrews-Gordon identities, Bressoud's identities, a new companion to Bressoud's identities, and the Bressoud-Göllnitz-Gordon identities. Finally, we give a new elementary proof of another very general identity of Bressoud using one of our Bailey lattices.

Abstract:We derive by analytic means a number of bilateral identities of the Rogers--Ramanujan type. Our results include bilateral extensions of the Rogers--Ramanujan and the Göllnitz-Gordon identities, and of related identities by Ramanujan, Jackson, and Slater. We give corresponding results for multiseries including multilateral extensions of the Andrews--Gordon identities, of the Andrews--Bressoud generalization of the Göllnitz--Gordon identities, of Bressoud's even modulus identities, and other identities. Our closed form bilateral and multilateral summations appear to be the very first of their kind.

Abstract:Since their introduction by Andrews, generalized Frobenius partitions have interested a number of authors, many of whom have worked out explicit formulas for their generating functions in specific cases. This has uncovered interesting combinatorial structure and led to proofs of a number of congruences. In this paper, we show how Andrews' generating functions can be cast in the framework of Eichler and Zagier's Jacobi forms. This reformulation allows us to compute explicit formulas for the generalized Frobenius partition generating functions (and in fact provides formulas for further functions of potential combinatorial interest), and it leads to a recursion formula to calculate them in terms of infinite $q$-products.

Abstract:This is a collection of definitions, notations and proofs for the Bernoulli numbers $B_n$ appearing in formulas for the sum of integer powers, some of which can be found scattered in the large related historical literature in French, English and German. We provide elementary proofs for the original convention with ${\mathcal B}_1=1/2$ and also for the current convention with $B_1=-1/2$, using only the binomial theorem and the concise Blissard symbolic (umbral) notation.

Symmetry Integrability and Geometry Methods and Applications

Abstract:We prove two multivariate -binomial identities conjectured by Bousseau, Brini and van Garrel [Geom. Topol. 28 (2024), 393-496, arXiv:2011.08830] which give generating series for Gromov-Witten invariants of two specific log Calabi-Yau surfaces. The key identity in all the proofs is Jackson's -analogue of the Pfaff-Saalschütz summation formula from the theory of basic hypergeometric series.

Abstract:I use polynomial analogue of the Jacobi triple product identity together with the Eisenstein formula for the Legendre symbol modulo 3 . to prove six identities involving the $q$-binomial coefficients. These identities are then extended to the new infinite hierarchies of q-series identities by means of the special case of Bailey's lemma. Some of the identities of Ramanujan, Slater, McLaughlin and Sills are obtained this way.

Abstract:We present what we call a "motivated proof" of the Bressoud-Göllnitz-Gordon partition identities. Similar "motivated proofs" have been given by Andrews and Baxter for the Rogers-Ramanujan identities and by Lepowsky and Zhu for Gordon's identities. Additionally, "motivated proofs" have also been given for the Andrews-Bressoud partition identities by Kanade, Lepowsky, Russell, and Sills and for the Göllnitz-Gordon-Andrews identities by Coulson, Kanade, Lepowsky, McRae, Qi, Russell, and the third author. Our proof borrows both the use of "ghost series" from the "motivated proof" of the Andrews-Bressoud identities and uses recursions similar to those found in the "motivated proof" of the Göllnitz-Gordon-Andrews identities. We anticipate that this "motivated proof" of the Bressoud-Göllnitz-Gordon identities will illuminate certain twisted vertex-algebraic constructions.

Abstract:Dedicated to George E. Andrews on the occasion of his 70th birthday. Submitted to a special issue for this occasion. We use Andrews' notion of a `signed partition' (i.e. partition where some parts are allowed to be negative) to interpret the Göllnitz--Gordon sum, and then provide a bijective map between these signed partitions and the usual Göllnitz--Gordon partitions (partitions with difference at least two between parts, and no consecutive even parts).

Abstract:The Jacobi-Stirling numbers were discovered as a result of a problem involving the spectral theory of powers of the classical second-order Jacobi differential expression. Specifically, these numbers are the coefficients of integral composite powers of the Jacobi expression in Lagrangian symmetric form. Quite remarkably, they share many properties with the classical Stirling numbers of the second kind which, as shown in LW, are the coefficients of integral powers of the Laguerre differential expression. In this paper, we establish several properties of the Jacobi-Stirling numbers and its companions including combinatorial interpretations thereby extending and supplementing known contributions to the literature of Andrews-Littlejohn, Andrews-Gawronski-Littlejohn, Egge, Gelineau-Zeng, and Mongelli.

Abstract:Bressoud introduced the partition function $B(\alpha_1,\ldots,\alpha_\lambda;\eta,k,r;n)$, which counts the number of partitions with certain difference conditions. Bressoud posed a conjecture on the generating function for the partition function $B(\alpha_1,\ldots,\alpha_\lambda;\eta,k,r;n)$ in multi-summation form. In this article, we introduce a bijection related to Bressoud's conjecture. As an application, we give a new companion to the Göllnitz-Gordon identities.

Abstract:In 1985, Bressoud and Goulden derived the formula for the constant term in $\prod_{(i,j)\in T} \frac{x_j}{x_i}\\\prod_{0\le i<j \le n}(\frac{x_i}{x_j})_{a_i}(\frac{qx_j}{x_i})_{a_j-1}$, where $T \subseteq \{(i,j)\mid 0\le i<j \le n\}$. This result implies the Andrews' $q$-Dyson identity. In 2006, Gessel and Xin proved the $q$-Dyson identity by considering both sides of the equality as polynomials in $q^{a_0}$. We use this approach to determine the coefficients of $x_0/x_1$ and $x_0/x_2$ in Laurent polynomials studied by Bressoud and Goulden.

Abstract:Andrews and Keith recently produced a general Schmidt type partition theorem using a novel interpretation of Stockhofe's bijection, which they used to find new $q$-series identities. This includes an identity for a trivariate 2-colored partition generating function. In this paper, their Schmidt type theorem is further generalized akin to how Franklin classically extended Glaisher's theorem. As a consequence, we obtain a companion to Andrews and Keith's 2-colored identity for overpartitions. These identities appear to be special cases of a much more general result.

Abstract:This article is concerned with the constants that appear in Harish-Chandra's character formula for stable discrete series of real reductive groups, although it does not require any knowledge about real reductive groups or discrete series. In Harish-Chandra's work the only information we have about these constants is that they are uniquely determined by an inductive property. Later Goresky-Kottwitz-MacPherson and Herb gave different formulas for these constants. In this article we generalize these formulas to the case of arbitrary finite Coxeter groups (in this setting, discrete series no longer make sense), and give a direct proof that the two formulas agree. We actually prove a slightly more general identity that also implies the combinatorial identity underlying the discrete series character identities of Morel. We deduce this identity from a general abstract theorem giving a way to calculate the alternating sum of the values of a valuation on the chambers of a Coxeter arrangement. We also introduce a ring structure on the set of valuations on polyhedral cones in Euclidean space with values in a fixed ring. This gives a theoretical framework for the valuation appearing in Appendix A of the Goresky-Kottwitz-MacPherson paper. In Appendix B we extend the notion of $2$-structures (due to Herb) to pseudo-root systems.
