Abstract:The geography problem is usually stated for simply connected symplectic 4-manifolds. When the first cohomology is nontrivial, however, one can restate the problem taking into account how close the symplectic manifold is to satisfying the conclusion of the Hard Lefschetz Theorem, which is measured by a nonnegative integer called the degeneracy. In this paper we include the degeneracy as an extra parameter in the geography problem and show how to fill out the geography of symplectic 4-manifolds with Kodaira dimension 1 for all admissible triples.

Abstract:We study the Kodaira dimension of moduli spaces of polarized hyperkähler varieties deformation equivalent to the Hilbert scheme of points on a K3 surface or to O'Grady's ten dimensional variety. This question was studied by Gritsenko-Hulek-Sankaran in the cases of $K3^{[2]}$ and OG10 type when the divisibility of the polarization is one. We generalize their results to higher dimension and divisibility. As a main result, for almost all dimensions $2n$ we provide a lower bound on the degree such that for all higher degrees, every component of the moduli space of polarized hyperkähler varieties of $K3^{[n]}$ type is of general type.

Abstract:This paper lays the foundation for determining the Kodaira dimension of the projectivized strata of Abelian differentials with prescribed zero and pole orders in large genus. We work with the moduli space of multi-scale differentials constructed in [BCGGM2] which provides an orbifold compactification of these strata. We establish the projectivity of the moduli space of multi-scale differentials, describe the locus of canonical singularities, and compute a series of effective divisor classes. Moreover, we exhibit a perturbation of the canonical class which allows the corresponding pluri-canonical forms to extend over the locus of non-canonical singularities. As applications, we certify general type for strata with few zeros as well as for strata with equidistributed zero orders when g is sufficiently large. In particular, we show general type for the odd spin components of the minimal strata for g > 12.
Almost complex parallelizable manifolds: Kodaira dimension and special structures

Abstract:We study the Kodaira dimension of a real parallelizable manifold $M$, with an almost complex structure $J$ in standard form with respect to a given parallelism. For $X = (M, J)$ we give conditions under which $\operatorname{kod}(X) = 0$. We provide examples in the case $M = G \times G$, where $G$ is a compact connected real Lie group. Finally we describe geometrical properties of real parallelizable manifolds in the framework of statistical geometry.

Abstract:Topological data analysis (TDA) allows us to explore the topological features of a dataset. Among topological features, lower dimensional ones have recently drawn the attention of practitioners in mathematics and statistics due to their potential to aid the discovery of low dimensional structure in a data set. However, lower dimensional features are usually challenging to detect based on finite samples and using TDA methods that ignore the probabilistic mechanism that generates the data. In this paper, lower dimensional topological features occurring as zero-density regions of density functions are introduced and thoroughly investigated. Specifically, we consider sequences of coverings for the support of a density function in which the coverings are comprised of balls with shrinking radii. We show that, when these coverings satisfy certain sufficient conditions as the sample size goes to infinity, we can detect lower dimensional, zero-density regions with increasingly higher probability while guarding against false detection. We supplement the theoretical developments with the discussion of simulated experiments that elucidate the behavior of the methodology for different choices of the tuning parameters that govern the construction of the covering sequences and characterize the asymptotic results.

Abstract:The goals of this paper are of two aspects. Firstly, we introduce the notion of generalized numerical Kodaira dimension with multiplier ideal sheaf and establish the subadditivity inequalities in terms of this notion, which can be used to give an analytic proof of O. Fujino's result on the subadditivity of the log Kodaira dimensions. Secondly, motivated by Zhou-Zhu's subadditivity of generalized Kodaira dimensions, we adopt another definition of generalized Kodaira dimension with multiplier ideal sheaf and show they are equal by using Okounkov bodies. As one application, we show that the superadditivity part in Zhou-Zhu's setting also holds true. As another application, we give an alternative proof of Zhou-Zhu's subadditivity formula, in the case when the singular metric $h_L$ has analytic singularities, by using generalized Iitaka fibrations.

Abstract:We study the Noether-Lefschetz locus of the moduli space $\mathcal{M}$ of $K3^{[2]}$-fourfolds with a polarization of degree $2$. Following Hassett's work on cubic fourfolds, Debarre, Iliev, and Manivel have shown that the Noether-Lefschetz locus in $\mathcal{M}$ is a countable union of special divisors $\mathcal{M}_d$, where the discriminant $d$ is a positive integer congruent to $0,2,$ or $4$ modulo 8. We compute the Kodaira dimensions of these special divisors for all but finitely many discriminants; in particular, we show that for $d>224$ and for many other small values of $d$, the space $\mathcal{M}_d$ is a variety of general type.

Abstract:We study the basic $k$-covers of a bipartite graph $G$; the algebra $\AG$ they span, first studied by Herzog, is the fiber cone of the Alexander dual of the edge ideal. We characterize when $\AG$ is a domain in terms of the combinatorics of $G$; if follows from a result of Hochster that when $\AG$ is a domain, it is also Cohen-Macaulay. We then study the dimension of $\AG$ by introducing a geometric invariant of bipartite graphs, the "graphical dimension". We show that the graphical dimension of $G$ is not larger than $\dim(\AG)$, and equality holds in many cases (e.g. when $G$ is a tree, or a cycle). Finally, we discuss applications of this theory to the arithmetical rank.

Abstract:A correspondence, by way of Heegaard splittings, between closed oriented 3-manifolds and pairs of surjections from a surface group to a free group has been studied by Stallings, Jaco, and Hempel. This correspondence, by way of trisections, was recently extended by Abrams, Gay, and Kirby to the case of smooth, closed, connected, oriented 4-manifolds. We unify these perspectives and generalize this correspondence to the case of links in closed oriented 3-manifolds and links of knotted surfaces in smooth, closed, connected, oriented 4-manifolds. The algebraic manifestations of these four subfields of low-dimensional topology (3-manifolds, 4-manifolds, knot theory, and knotted surface theory) are all strikingly similar, and this correspondence perhaps elucidates some unique character of low-dimensional topology.
