Abstract:Using a homotopy approach, we prove in this paper a conjecture of Maulik, Nekrasov, Okounkov and Pandharipande on the dimension zero Donaldson-Thomas invariants of all smooth complex threefolds.

Abstract:Levine has constructed motivic analogues of virtual fundamental classes, living in cohomology of Witt sheaves. We use this to define motivic Donaldson-Thomas invariants $\tilde{I}_n$ for $\mathbb{P}^3$ over $\mathbb{R}$. We show that for $n$ odd, $\tilde{I}_n = 0$ and we compute $\tilde{I}_2 = 10, \tilde{I}_4 = 25$ and $\tilde{I}_6 = -50$. We then make a conjecture about the general case, which could be a motivic analogue of a classical theorem of Maulik-Nekrasov-Okounkov-Pandharipande. The results presented here also form a chapter in the authors thesis, which was submitted on May 30'th, 2023.

Abstract:We prove a correspondence between Donaldson-Thomas invariants of quivers with potential having trivial attractor invariants and genus zero punctured Gromov-Witten invariants of holomorphic symplectic cluster varieties. The proof relies on the comparison of the stability scattering diagram, describing the wall-crossing behavior of Donaldson-Thomas invariants, with a scattering diagram capturing punctured Gromov-Witten invariants via tropical geometry.

Invariant Stability Conditions on Certain Calabi-Yau Threefolds

Abstract:We apply results on inducing stability conditions to local Calabi-Yau threefolds and obtain applications to Donaldson-Thomas (DT) theory. A basic example is the total space of the canonical bundle of $Z=\mathbb{P}^1\times \mathbb{P}^1$. We use a result of Dell to construct stability conditions on the derived category of $X$ for which all stable objects can be explicitly described. We relate them to stability conditions on the resolved conifold $Y=\mathscr{O}_{\mathbb{P}^1}(-1)^{\oplus 2}$ in two ways: geometrically via the McKay correspondence, and algebraically via a quotienting operation on quivers with potential. These stability conditions were first discussed in the physics literature by Closset and del Zotto, and were constructed mathematically by Xiong by a different method. We obtain a complete description of the corresponding DT invariants, from which we can conclude that they define analytic wall-crossing structures in the sense of Kontsevich and Soibelman. In the last section we discuss several other examples of a similar flavour.

The period-index conjecture for abelian threefolds and Donaldson-Thomas theory

Abstract:We prove the period-index conjecture for unramified Brauer classes on abelian threefolds. To do so, we develop a theory of reduced Donaldson-Thomas invariants for 3-dimensional Calabi-Yau categories, with the feature that the noncommutative variational integral Hodge conjecture holds for classes with nonvanishing invariant. The period-index result is then proved by interpreting it as the algebraicity of a Hodge class on the twisted derived category, and specializing within the Hodge locus to an untwisted abelian threefold with nonvanishing invariant. As a consequence, we also deduce the integral Hodge conjecture for generically twisted abelian threefolds.

Donaldson-Thomas invariants for the Bridgeland-Smith correspondence

Abstract:Famous work of Bridgeland and Smith shows that certain moduli spaces of quadratic differentials are isomorphic to spaces of stability conditions on particular 3-Calabi-Yau triangulated categories. This result has subsequently been generalised and extended by several authors. One facet of this correspondence is that finite-length trajectories of the quadratic differential are related to categories of semistable objects of the corresponding stability condition, which have associated Donaldson-Thomas invariants. On the other hand, computations in the physics literature suggest certain values of these invariants according to the type of trajectory. In this paper, we show that the category recently constructed by Christ, Haiden, and Qiu gives Donaldson-Thomas invariants which agree with the predictions from physics; in particular, degenerate ring domains of the quadratic differential give rise to non-zero Donaldson-Thomas invariants. In calculating all of the invariants, we obtain a novel application of string and band techniques from representation theory.

Abstract:The aim of the paper is twofold. Firstly, we give an axiomatic presentation of Donaldson-Thomas theory for categories of homological dimension at most one with potential. In particular, we provide rigorous proofs of all standard results concerning the integration map, wall-crossing, PT-DT correspondence, etc. following Kontsevich and Soibelman. We also show the equivalence of their approach and the one given by Joyce and Song. Secondly, we relate Donaldson-Thomas functions for such a category with arbitrary potential to those with zero potential under some mild conditions. As a result of this, we obtain a geometric interpretation of Donaldson-Thomas functions in all known realizations, i.e. mixed Hodge modules, perverse sheaves and constructible functions.

On Motivic and Arithmetic Refinements of Donaldson-Thomas invariants

Abstract:In recent years, a version of enumerative geometry over arbitrary fields has been developed and studied by Kass-Wickelgren, Levine, and others, in which the counts obtained are not integers but quadratic forms. Aiming to understand the relation to other "refined invariants", and especially their possible interpretation in quantum theory, we explain how to obtain a quadratic version of Donaldson-Thomas invariants from the motivic invariants defined in the work of Kontsevich and Soibelman and pose some questions. We calculate these invariants in a few simple examples that provide standard tests for these questions, including degree zero invariants of $\mathbb A^3$ and higher-genus Gopakumar-Vafa invariants recently studied by Liu and Ruan. The comparison with known real and complex counts plays a central role throughout.

Asymptotic dimension and geometric decompositions in dimensions 3 and 4

Abstract:We show that the fundamental groups of smooth $4$-manifolds that admit geometric decompositions in the sense of Thurston have asymptotic dimension at most four, and equal to 4 when aspherical. We also show that closed $3$-manifold groups have asymptotic dimension at most 3. Our proof method yields that the asymptotic dimension of closed $3$-dimensional Alexandrov spaces is at most 3. We thus obtain that the Novikov conjecture holds for closed $4$-manifolds with such a geometric decomposition and closed $3$-dimensional Alexandrov spaces. Consequences of these results include a vanishing result for the Yamabe invariant of certain $0$-surgered geometric $4$-manifolds and the existence of zero in the spectrum of aspherical smooth $4$-manifolds with a geometric decomposition.

We formulate punctual evaluation, rationality and wall-crossing conjectures, in parallel with the standard theory. Our formalism specializes to the Li-Wu theory of relative ideal sheaves when the divisor is smooth, and is parallel to recent work on logarithmic Gromov-Witten theory with expansions.

Higher dimensional moduli spaces on Kuznetsov components of Fano threefolds

Abstract:We study moduli spaces of stable objects in the Kuznetsov components of Fano threefolds. We prove a general non-emptiness criterion for moduli spaces, which applies to the cases of prime Fano threefolds of index $1$, degree $10 \leq d \leq 18$, and index $2$, degree $d \leq 4$. In the second part, we focus on cubic threefolds. We show the irreducibility of the moduli spaces, and that the general fibers of the Abel--Jacobi maps from the moduli spaces to the intermediate Jacobian are Fano varieties. When the dimension is sufficiently large, we further show that the general fibers of the Abel--Jacobi maps are stably birational equivalent to each other. As an application of our methods, we prove Conjecture A.1 in [FGLZ24] concerning the existence of Lagrangian subvarieties in moduli spaces of stable objects in the Kuznetsov components of very general cubic fourfolds.

Abstract:In studying the "11/8-Conjecture" on the Geography Problem in 4-dimensional topology, Furuta proposed a question on the existence of Pin(2)-equivariant stable maps between certain representation spheres. In this paper, we present a complete solution to this problem by analyzing the Pin(2)-equivariant Mahowald invariants. As a geometric application of our result, we prove a "10/8+4"-Theorem. We prove our theorem by analyzing maps between certain finite spectra arising from BPin(2) and various Thom spectra associated with it. To analyze these maps, we use the technique of cell diagrams, known results on the stable homotopy groups of spheres, and the j-based Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence.
Tetrahedron instantons in Donaldson-Thomas theory

Abstract:Inspired by the work of Pomoni-Yan-Zhang in String Theory, we introduce the moduli space of tetrahedron instantons as a Quot scheme and describe it as a moduli space of quiver representations. We construct a virtual fundamental class and virtual structure sheaf à la Oh-Thomas, by which we define K-theoretic invariants. We show that the partition function of such invariants reproduces the one studied by Pomoni-Yan-Zhang, and explicitly determine it, as a product of shifted partition functions of rank one Donaldson-Thomas invariants of the three-dimensional affine space. Our geometric construction answers a series of questions of Pomoni-Yan-Zhang on the geometry of the moduli space of tetrahedron instantons and the behaviour of its partition function, and provides a new application of the recent work of Oh-Thomas.

A three-manifold invariant from graph configurations

Abstract:The logarithm of the Kontsevich-Kuperberg-Thurston invariant counts embeddings of connected trivalent graphs in an oriented rational homology sphere, using integrals on configuration spaces of points in the given manifold. It is a universal finite type invariant of oriented rational homology spheres. The exponential of this invariant is often called the perturbative expansion of the Chern-Simons theory. In this article, we give an independent original definition of the degree two part of the logarithm of the Kontsevich-Kuperberg-Thurston invariant appropriate for concrete computations. This article can also serve as an introduction to the general definition of the logarithm of the Kontsevich-Kuperberg-Thurston invariant.

Integral invariants for framed 3-manifolds associated to trivalent graphs possibly with self-loops

Abstract:Bott--Cattaneo's theory defines the integral invariants for a framed rational homology 3-sphere equipped with an acyclic orthogonal local system, in terms of graph cocycles without self-loops. The 2-loop term of their invariants is associated with the theta graph. Their definition requires a cohomological condition. Cattaneo--Shimizu removed this cohomological condition and gave a 2-loop invariant associated with a linear combination of the theta graph and the dumbbell graph, the 2-loop trivalent graph with self-loops. In this paper, we are concerned with an acyclic local system given by the adjoint representation of a semi-simple Lie group composed with a representation of the fundamental group of a closed 3-manifold, and we show that through a cohomological construction eventually the integral associated with the dumbbell graph vanishes. Based on this idea, we construct a theory of graph complexes and cocycles, so that higher-loop invariants can be defined by two different but equivalent methods: the graph cocycles without self-loops as in Bott--Cattaneo's theory, and the ones with self-loops that extend Cattaneo--Shimizu's 2-loop invariants. As a consequence, we prove that the generating series of Chern--Simons perturbation theory gives rise to topological invariants for framed 3-manifolds in our setting, which admits a formula in terms of only trivalent graphs without self-loops.

Abstract:We prove that the product of an Enriques surface and a very general curve of genus at least 1 does not satisfy the integral Hodge conjecture for 1-cycles. This provides the first examples of smooth projective complex threefolds of Kodaira dimension zero for which the integral Hodge conjecture fails, and the first examples of non-algebraic torsion cohomology classes of degree 4 on smooth projective complex threefolds.
