Abstract:We prove the $r$-spin cobordism hypothesis in the setting of (weak) 2-categories for every positive integer $r$: The 2-groupoid of 2-dimensional fully extended $r$-spin TQFTs with given target is equivalent to the homotopy fixed points of an induced $\textrm{Spin}_2^r$-action. In particular, such TQFTs are classified by fully dualisable objects together with a trivialisation of the $r$-th power of their Serre automorphisms. For $r=1$ we recover the oriented case (on which our proof builds), while ordinary spin structures correspond to $r=2$. To construct examples, we explicitly describe $\textrm{Spin}_2^r$-homotopy fixed points in the equivariant completion of any symmetric monoidal 2-category. We also show that every object in a 2-category of Landau--Ginzburg models gives rise to fully extended spin TQFTs, and that half of these do not factor through the oriented bordism 2-category.

Spin(7) metrics from Kähler Geometry

Abstract:We investigate the $\mathbb{T}^2$-quotient of a torsion free $Spin(7)$-structure on an $8$-manifold under the assumption that the quotient $6$-manifold is Kähler. We show that there exists either a Hamiltonian $S^1$ or $\mathbb{T}^2$ action on the quotient preserving the complex structure. Performing a Kähler reduction in each case reduces the problem of finding $Spin(7)$ metrics to studying a system of PDEs on either a $4$- or $2$-manifold with trivial canonical bundle, which in the compact case corresponds to either $\mathbb{T}^4$, a K3 surface or an elliptic curve. By reversing this construction we give infinitely many new explicit examples of $Spin(7)$ holonomy metrics. In the simplest case, our result can be viewed as an extension of the Gibbons-Hawking ansatz.

Abstract:We calculate the mod $2$ spin$^c$-cobordism ring up to uniform $F$-isomorphism (i.e., inseparable isogeny). As a consequence we get the prime ideal spectrum of the mod $2$ spin$^c$-cobordism ring. We also calculate the mod $2$ spin$^c$-cobordism ring ``on the nose'' in degrees $\leq 33$. We construct an infinitely generated nonunital subring of the $2$-torsion in the spin$^c$-cobordism ring. We use our calculations of product structure in the spin and spin$^c$ cobordism rings to give an explicit example, up to cobordism, of a compact $24$-dimensional spin manifold which is not cobordant to a sum of squares, which was asked about in a 1965 question of Milnor.

Abstract:The nilpotence variety for extended supersymmetric quantum mechanics is a cone over a quadric in projective space. The pure spinor correspondence, which relates the description of off-shell supermultiplets to the classification of modules over the corresponding hypersurface ring, reduces to a classical problem of linear algebra. Spinor bundles, which correspond to maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules, serve as basic building blocks. Koszul duality appears as a deformed version of the Bernstein-Gel'fand-Gel'fand correspondence that we make fully concrete. We illustrate in numerous examples the close relationship between these connections and the powerful graphical technology of Adinkras, which appear as a decategorification of special complexes on quadrics. We emphasize the role of R-symmetry for recovering higher-dimensional gauge and gravity multiplets.

KSp-characteristic classes determine Spin$^h$ cobordism

Abstract:A classic result of Anderson, Brown, and Peterson states that the cobordism spectrum MSpin (respectively, MSpin$^c$) splits as a sum of Eilenberg--Mac Lane spectra and connective covers of real K-theory (respectively, complex K-theory) at 2. We develop a theory of symplectic K-theory classes and use these to build an explicit splitting for MSpin$^h$ in terms of Eilenberg--Mac Lane spectra and spectra related to symplectic K-theory. This allows us to determine the Spin$^h$ cobordism groups systematically. We also prove that two Spin$^h$-manifolds are cobordant if and only if their underlying unoriented manifolds are cobordant and their KSp-characteristic numbers agree.

Abstract:In this note, we study necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a Spin $(n + 1)$-dimensional cobordism that supports a non-singular and non-degenerate pseudo-Riemannian metric of signature $(2, n - 1)$, which restricts to a non-singular time-orientable Lorentzian metric on its boundary. The corresponding cobordism groups are computed.

Abstract:M-theory on compact eight-manifolds with $\mathrm{Spin}(7)$-holonomy is a framework for geometric engineering of 3d $\mathcal{N}=1$ gauge theories coupled to gravity. We propose a new construction of such $\mathrm{Spin}(7)$-manifolds, based on a generalized connected sum, where the building blocks are a Calabi-Yau four-fold and a $G_2$-holonomy manifold times a circle, respectively, which both asymptote to a Calabi-Yau three-fold times a cylinder. The generalized connected sum construction is first exemplified for Joyce orbifolds, and is then used to construct examples of new compact manifolds with $\mathrm{Spin}(7)$-holonomy. In instances when there is a K3-fibration of the $\mathrm{Spin}(7)$-manifold, we test the spectra using duality to heterotic on a $T^3$-fibered $G_2$-holonomy manifold, which are shown to be precisely the recently discovered twisted-connected sum constructions.

Abstract:We extend our family rigidity and vanishing theorems in [LiuMaZ] to the Spin c case.In particular, we prove a ^-theory version of the main results of [H], [Liul, Theorem B] for a family of almost complex manifolds.0. Introduction.Let M, B be two compact smooth manifolds, and TT : M -» B be a smooth fibration with compact fibre X.Let TX be the relative tangent bundle.Assume that a compact Lie group G acts fiberwise on M, that is, the action preserves each fiber of TT.Let P be a family of G-equivariant elliptic operators along the fiber X.Then the family index of P, Ind(P), is a well-defined element in K(B) (cf.[AS]) and is a virtual G-representation (cf.[LiuMal]).We denote by (Ind(P)) G £ K(B) the G-invariant part of Ind(P).A family of elliptic operator P is said to be rigid on the equivariant Chern character level with respect to this G-action, if the equivariant Chern character ch 5 (Ind(P)) G H*(B) is independent of g G G. Spin cobordism and the gauge group of type I/heterotic string theory

Abstract:Cobordism offers a unique perspective into the non-perturbative sector of string theory by demanding the absence of higher form global symmetries for quantum gravitational consistency. In this work we compute the spin cobordism groups of the classifying space of $Spin(32)/\mathbb{Z}_2$ relevant to describing type I/heterotic string theory and explore their (shared) non-perturbative sector. To facilitate this we leverage our knowledge of type I D-brane physics behind the related ko-homology. The computation utilizes several established tools from algebraic topology, the focus here is on two spectral sequences. First, the Eilenberg-Moore spectral sequence is used to obtain the cohomology of the classifying space of the $Spin(32)/\mathbb{Z}_2$ with $\mathbb{Z}_2$ coefficients. This will enable us to start the Adams spectral sequence for finally obtaining our result, the spin cobordism groups. We conclude by providing a string theoretic interpretation to the cobordism groups.

Abstract:Let $\imath: M\to \RR^{p+2}$ be a smooth embedding from a connected, oriented, closed $p$-dimesional smooth manifold to $\RR^{p+2}$, then there is a spin structure $\imath^\sharp(\varsigma^{p+2})$ on $M$ canonically induced from the embedding. If an orientation-preserving diffeomorphism $\tau$ of $M$ extends over $\imath$ as an orientation-preserving topological homeomorphism of $\RR^{p+2}$, then $\tau$ preserves the induced spin structure. Let $\esg_\cat(\imath)$ be the subgroup of the $\cat$-mapping class group $\mcg_\cat(M)$ consisting of elements whose representatives extend over $\RR^{p+2}$ as orientation-preserving $\cat$-homeomorphisms, where $\cat=\topo$, $\pl$ or $\diff$. The invariance of $\imath^\sharp(\varsigma^{p+2})$ gives nontrivial lower bounds to $[\mcg_\cat(M):\esg_\cat(\imath)]$ in various special cases. We apply this to embedded surfaces in $\RR^4$ and embedded $p$-dimensional tori in $\RR^{p+2}$. In particular, in these cases the index lower bounds for $\esg_\topo(\imath)$ are achieved for unknotted embeddings.

Abstract:We construct a commutative orthogonal $C_2$-ring spectrum, $\mathrm{MSpin}^c_{\mathbb{R}}$, along with a $C_2$-$E_{\infty}$-orientation $\mathrm{MSpin}^c_{\mathbb{R}} \to \mathrm{KU}_{\mathbb{R}}$ of Atiyah's Real K-theory. Further, we define $E_{\infty}$-maps $\mathrm{MSpin} \to (\mathrm{MSpin}^c_{\mathbb{R}})^{C_2}$ and $\mathrm{MU}_{\mathbb{R}} \to \mathrm{MSpin}^c_{\mathbb{R}}$, which are used to recover the three well-known orientations of topological $\mathrm{K}$-theory, $\mathrm{MSpin}^c \to \mathrm{KU}$, $\mathrm{MSpin} \to \mathrm{KO}$, and $\mathrm{MU}_{\mathbb{R}} \to \mathrm{KU}_{\mathbb{R}}$, from the map $\mathrm{MSpin}^c_{\mathbb{R}} \to \mathrm{KU}_{\mathbb{R}}$. We also show that the integrality of the $\hat{A}$-genus on spin manifolds provides an obstruction for the fixed points $(\mathrm{MSpin}^c_{\mathbb{R}})^{C_2}$ to be equivalent to $\mathrm{MSpin}$, using the Mackey functor structure of $\underline{\pi}_*\mathrm{MSpin}^c_{\mathbb{R}}$. In particular, the usual map $\mathrm{MSpin} \to \mathrm{MSpin}^c$ does not arise as the inclusion of fixed points for any $C_2$-$E_{\infty}$-ring spectrum.

Abstract:We show that a homotopy equivalence between manifolds induces a correspondence between their spin^c-structures, even in the presence of 2-torsion. This is proved by generalizing spin^c-structures to Poincare complexes. A procedure is given for explicitly computing the correspondence under reasonable hypotheses.

Abstract:In physics literature about supersymmetry, many authors refer to \emph{super Minkowski spaces}. These spaces are affine supermanifolds with certain distinguished spin structures. In these notes, we make the notion of such spin structures precise and generalise the setup to curved supermanifolds. This leads to the more general notion of \emph{spinorial superspaces}. By working in a suitable geometric and coordinate-free setting, many explicit coordinate computations appearing in physics literature can be replaced by more conceptual methods. As an application of the rather general framework of spinorial superspaces, we formulate $\mathcal N = 1$ super Yang-Mills theories on curved superspaces of spacetime dimensions $d=3$ and $d=4$ and show how to reduce the theory to field theories defined on an underlying ordinary spacetime manifold.

Differential spinors and Kundt three-manifolds with skew-torsion

Abstract:We develop the theory of spinorial polyforms associated with bundles of irreducible Clifford modules of non-simple real type, obtaining a precise characterization of the square of an irreducible real spinor in signature $(p-q) = 1\,\mathrm{mod(8)}$ as a polyform belonging to a semi-algebraic real set. We use this formalism to study differential spinors on Lorentzian three-manifolds, proving that in this dimension and signature, every differential spinor is equivalent to an isotropic line preserved in a given direction by a metric connection with prescribed torsion. We apply this result to investigate Lorentzian three-manifolds equipped with a skew-torsion parallel spinor, namely a spinor parallel with respect to a metric connection with totally skew-symmetric torsion. We obtain several structural results about this class of Lorentzian three-manifolds, which are necessarily Kundt, and in the compact case, we obtain an explicit differential condition that guarantees geodesic completeness. We further elaborate on these results to study the supersymmetric solutions of three-dimensional NS-NS supergravity, which involve skew-torsion parallel spinors whose torsion is given by the curvature of a curving on an abelian bundle gerbe. In particular, we obtain a correspondence between NS-NS supersymmetric solutions and null coframes satisfying an explicit exterior differential system that we solve locally.

Abstract:By bridging geometric and algebraic concepts, this dissertation lays the groundwork for a comprehensive study of the Clifford structures on bundles and spinor fields. We delve into the Kähler-Atiyah bundle, which encapsulates the essence of Clifford algebras and provides profound insights into the algebraic structures underlying geometric frameworks. The algebraic and classical definitions of spinors within Clifford algebras are concerned, as well as their global realisation as sections of the bundle of spinors constructed within a spin structure on a manifold from the Kähler-Atiyah bundle background which serves as an effective framework for applications involving spinors such as their classification based on their bilinear covariants and Fierz identities. Homogeneous differential forms playing the role of bilinear covariants can vanish due to algebraic obstructions in a warped flux compactification AdS$_3 \times M_8$ yielding the identification of new spinor field classes.

Invariants of r-spin TQFTs and non-semisimplicity

Abstract:For a positive integer r, an r-spin topological quantum field theory is a 2-dimensional TQFT with tangential structure given by the r-fold cover of SO_2 . In particular, such a TQFT assigns a scalar invariant to every closed r-spin surface Sigma. Given a sequence of scalars indexed by the set of diffeomorphism classes of all such Sigma, we construct a symmetric monoidal category C and a C-valued r-spin TQFT which reproduces the given sequence. We also determine when such a sequence arises from a TQFT valued in an abelian category with finite-dimensional Hom spaces. In particular, we construct TQFTs with values in super vector spaces that can distinguish all diffeomorphism classes of r-spin surfaces, and we show that the associated algebras are necessarily non-semisimple.

Abstract:We construct a full exceptional Lefschetz collection on the spinor 15-fold consisting of a connected component of the space of orthogonal 6-dimensional subspaces of a 12-dimensional complex vector space, isotropic with respect of a fixed non-degenerate quadratic form. The collection is made of 2 twists of a 4-item block and 8 twists of a 3-item block, confirming a conjecture of Kuznetsov and Smirnov. We speculate that a similar collection might work for the Freudenthal E7-variety.

Abstract:We introduce a graphical calculus for computing morphism spaces between the categorified spin networks of Cooper and Krushkal. The calculus, phrased in terms of planar compositions of categorified Jones-Wenzl projectors and their duals, is then used to study the module structure of spin networks over the colored unknots.
