Abstract:We show that a homotopy equivalence between manifolds induces a correspondence between their spin^c-structures, even in the presence of 2-torsion. This is proved by generalizing spin^c-structures to Poincare complexes. A procedure is given for explicitly computing the correspondence under reasonable hypotheses.

Abstract:Spinorial methods have proven to be a powerful tool to study geometric properties of spin manifolds. Our aim is to continue the spinorial study of manifolds that are not necessarily spin. We introduce and study the notion of $G$-invariance of spin$^r$ structures on a manifold $M$ equipped with an action of a Lie group $G$. For the case when $M$ is a homogeneous $G$-space, we prove a classification result of these invariant structures in terms of the isotropy representation. As an example, we study the invariant spin$^r$ structures for all the homogeneous realisations of the spheres.

Abstract:We extend our family rigidity and vanishing theorems in [LiuMaZ] to the Spin c case.In particular, we prove a ^-theory version of the main results of [H], [Liul, Theorem B] for a family of almost complex manifolds.0. Introduction.Let M, B be two compact smooth manifolds, and TT : M -» B be a smooth fibration with compact fibre X.Let TX be the relative tangent bundle.Assume that a compact Lie group G acts fiberwise on M, that is, the action preserves each fiber of TT.Let P be a family of G-equivariant elliptic operators along the fiber X.Then the family index of P, Ind(P), is a well-defined element in K(B) (cf.[AS]) and is a virtual G-representation (cf.[LiuMal]).We denote by (Ind(P)) G £ K(B) the G-invariant part of Ind(P).A family of elliptic operator P is said to be rigid on the equivariant Chern character level with respect to this G-action, if the equivariant Chern character ch 5 (Ind(P)) G H*(B) is independent of g G G. Abstract:Let $\imath: M\to \RR^{p+2}$ be a smooth embedding from a connected, oriented, closed $p$-dimesional smooth manifold to $\RR^{p+2}$, then there is a spin structure $\imath^\sharp(\varsigma^{p+2})$ on $M$ canonically induced from the embedding. If an orientation-preserving diffeomorphism $\tau$ of $M$ extends over $\imath$ as an orientation-preserving topological homeomorphism of $\RR^{p+2}$, then $\tau$ preserves the induced spin structure. Let $\esg_\cat(\imath)$ be the subgroup of the $\cat$-mapping class group $\mcg_\cat(M)$ consisting of elements whose representatives extend over $\RR^{p+2}$ as orientation-preserving $\cat$-homeomorphisms, where $\cat=\topo$, $\pl$ or $\diff$. The invariance of $\imath^\sharp(\varsigma^{p+2})$ gives nontrivial lower bounds to $[\mcg_\cat(M):\esg_\cat(\imath)]$ in various special cases. We apply this to embedded surfaces in $\RR^4$ and embedded $p$-dimensional tori in $\RR^{p+2}$. In particular, in these cases the index lower bounds for $\esg_\topo(\imath)$ are achieved for unknotted embeddings.

Abstract:In this article, we answer two questions of Buchanan-McKean (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2312.08209" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2312.08209">arXiv:2312.08209</a>) about bordism for manifolds with spin$^h$ structures: we establish a Smith isomorphism between the reduced spin$^h$ bordism of $\mathbb{RP}^\infty$ and pin$^{h-}$ bordism, and we provide a geometric explanation for the isomorphism $\Omega_{4k}^{\mathrm{Spin}^c} \otimes\mathbb Z[1/2] \cong \Omega_{4k}^{\mathrm{Spin}^h} \otimes\mathbb Z[1/2]$. Our proofs use the general theory of twisted spin structures and Smith homomorphisms that we developed in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2405.04649" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2405.04649">arXiv:2405.04649</a> joint with Devalapurkar, Liu, Pacheco-Tallaj, and Thorngren, specifically that the Smith homomorphism participates in a long exact sequence with explicit, computable terms.

Spin structures on perfect complexes

Abstract:We define spin structures on perfect complexes outside of characteristic two, generalizing the usual notion for vector bundles. We give an explicit local characterization of spin structures, and show that for an oriented quadratic complex $E$ on an algebraic stack, spin structures on $E$ are parametrized by a degree $2$ gerbe. As an application, we show how to lift the K-theory class of Oh-Thomas in DT4 theory to a genuine (twisted) sheaf.

Abstract:M-theory on compact eight-manifolds with $\mathrm{Spin}(7)$-holonomy is a framework for geometric engineering of 3d $\mathcal{N}=1$ gauge theories coupled to gravity. We propose a new construction of such $\mathrm{Spin}(7)$-manifolds, based on a generalized connected sum, where the building blocks are a Calabi-Yau four-fold and a $G_2$-holonomy manifold times a circle, respectively, which both asymptote to a Calabi-Yau three-fold times a cylinder. The generalized connected sum construction is first exemplified for Joyce orbifolds, and is then used to construct examples of new compact manifolds with $\mathrm{Spin}(7)$-holonomy. In instances when there is a K3-fibration of the $\mathrm{Spin}(7)$-manifold, we test the spectra using duality to heterotic on a $T^3$-fibered $G_2$-holonomy manifold, which are shown to be precisely the recently discovered twisted-connected sum constructions.

Abstract:We investigate the $\mathbb{T}^2$-quotient of a torsion free $Spin(7)$-structure on an $8$-manifold under the assumption that the quotient $6$-manifold is Kähler. We show that there exists either a Hamiltonian $S^1$ or $\mathbb{T}^2$ action on the quotient preserving the complex structure. Performing a Kähler reduction in each case reduces the problem of finding $Spin(7)$ metrics to studying a system of PDEs on either a $4$- or $2$-manifold with trivial canonical bundle, which in the compact case corresponds to either $\mathbb{T}^4$, a K3 surface or an elliptic curve. By reversing this construction we give infinitely many new explicit examples of $Spin(7)$ holonomy metrics. In the simplest case, our result can be viewed as an extension of the Gibbons-Hawking ansatz.

Abstract:The analogies between symplectic and orthogonal groups, regarded as symmetries of real bilinear forms, are manifest in their (metaplectic and spin) projective representations. In finite dimensions, those are true representations of doubly covering groups; but one may also use group extensions by a circle. Here we lay out a parallel treatment of of the Mp$^\mathrm{c}$ and Spin$^\mathrm{c}$ covering groups, acting on the respective Fock spaces by permuting certain Gaussian vectors. The cocycles of these extensions exhibit interesting similarities.

Cyclotomic Structures in Symplectic Topology

Abstract:We extend the Cohen-Jones-Segal construction of stable homotopy types associated to flow categories of Morse-Smale functions $f$ to the setting where $f$ is equivariant under a finite group action and is Morse but no longer Morse-Smale. This setting occurs universally, as equivariant Morse functions can rarely be perturbed to nearby equivariant Morse-Smale functions. The method is very general, and allows one to do equivariant Floer theory while avoiding all the complications typically caused by issues of equivariant transversality. The construction assigns a (genuine) equivariant orthogonal spectrum to an equivariant framed virtually smooth flow category. Using this method, we construct, for a compact symplectic manifold $M$, which is symplectically atoroidal with contact boundary, and is equipped with an equivariant trivialization of its polarization class, a cyclotomic structure on the spectral lift of the symplectic cohomology $SH^*(M)$. This generalizes a variant of the map which sends loops to their $p$-fold covers on free loop spaces to the setting of general Liouville domains, and suggests a systematic connection between Floer homology and $p$-adic Hodge theory.

Abstract:In [1], Connes presented axioms governing noncommutative geometry. He went on to claim that when specialised to the commutative case, these axioms recover spin or spin^c geometry depending on whether the geometry is ''real'' or not. We attempt to flesh out the details of Connes' ideas. As an illustration we present a proof of his claim, partly extending the validity of the result to pseudo-Riemannian spin manifolds. Throughout we are as explicit and elementary as possible.

Abstract:Results on symplectic spinors and their higher spin versions, concerning representation theory and cohomology properties are presented. Exterior forms with values in the symplectic spinors are decomposed into irreducible modules including finding the hidden symmetry (Schur--Weyl--Howe type duality) given by a representation of the Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{osp}(1|2)$ in this case. We also determine ranges of the induced exterior symplectic spinor derivatives when they are restricted to bundles induced by the irreducible submodules mentioned. This duality is used to decompose curvature tensors of covariant derivatives induced by a Fedosov connection to a symplectic spinor bundle, for characterizing a subcomplex of the de Rham complex twisted by the spinors and for proving that the complex is of elliptic type. Part of the dual is used to characterize Fedosov manifolds admitting symplectic Killing spinors and for relating the spectra of the symplectic Rarita--Schwinger and the symplectic Dirac operator of Habermann. Further, we use the Fomenko--Mishchenko generalization of the Atiyah--Singer index theorem to prove a kind of Hodge theory is valid for elliptic complexes with differentials on projective and finitely generated bundles over the algebra of compact operators and certain further ones.
$\mathbb Z_2$-Harmonic Spinors and 1-forms on Connected sums and Torus sums of 3-manifolds

Abstract:Given a pair of $\mathbb{Z}_2$-harmonic spinors (resp. 1-forms) on closed Riemannian 3-manifolds $(Y_1, g_1)$ and $(Y_2,g_2)$, we construct $\mathbb{Z}_2$-harmonic spinors (resp. 1-forms) on the connected sum $Y_1 \# Y_2$ and the torus sum $Y_1 \cup_{T^2} Y_2$ using a gluing argument. The main tool in the proof is a parameterized version of the Nash-Moser implicit function theorem established by Donaldson and the second author. We use these results to construct an abundance of new examples of $\mathbb Z_2$-harmonic spinors and 1-forms. In particular, we prove that for every closed 3-manifold $Y$, there exist infinitely many $\mathbb{Z}_2$-harmonic spinors with singular sets representing infinitely many distinct isotopy classes of embedded links, strengthening an existence theorem of Doan-Walpuski. Moreover, combining this with previous results, our construction implies that if $b_1(Y) > 0$, there exist infinitely many $\mathrm{spin}^c$ structures on $Y$ such that the moduli space of solutions to the two-spinor Seiberg-Witten equations is non-empty and non-compact.

Abstract:We construct a commutative orthogonal $C_2$-ring spectrum, $\mathrm{MSpin}^c_{\mathbb{R}}$, along with a $C_2$-$E_{\infty}$-orientation $\mathrm{MSpin}^c_{\mathbb{R}} \to \mathrm{KU}_{\mathbb{R}}$ of Atiyah's Real K-theory. Further, we define $E_{\infty}$-maps $\mathrm{MSpin} \to (\mathrm{MSpin}^c_{\mathbb{R}})^{C_2}$ and $\mathrm{MU}_{\mathbb{R}} \to \mathrm{MSpin}^c_{\mathbb{R}}$, which are used to recover the three well-known orientations of topological $\mathrm{K}$-theory, $\mathrm{MSpin}^c \to \mathrm{KU}$, $\mathrm{MSpin} \to \mathrm{KO}$, and $\mathrm{MU}_{\mathbb{R}} \to \mathrm{KU}_{\mathbb{R}}$, from the map $\mathrm{MSpin}^c_{\mathbb{R}} \to \mathrm{KU}_{\mathbb{R}}$. We also show that the integrality of the $\hat{A}$-genus on spin manifolds provides an obstruction for the fixed points $(\mathrm{MSpin}^c_{\mathbb{R}})^{C_2}$ to be equivalent to $\mathrm{MSpin}$, using the Mackey functor structure of $\underline{\pi}_*\mathrm{MSpin}^c_{\mathbb{R}}$. In particular, the usual map $\mathrm{MSpin} \to \mathrm{MSpin}^c$ does not arise as the inclusion of fixed points for any $C_2$-$E_{\infty}$-ring spectrum.

Parallel spinors for $\mathrm{G}_2^*$ and isotropic structures

Abstract:We obtain a correspondence between irreducible real parallel spinors on pseudo-Riemannian manifolds $(M,g)$ of signature $(4,3)$ and solutions of an associated differential system for three-forms that satisfy a homogeneous algebraic equation of order two in the Kähler-Atiyah bundle of $(M,g)$. Applying this general framework, we obtain an intrinsic algebraic characterization of $\mathrm{G}_2^*$-structures as well as the first explicit description of isotropic irreducible spinors in signature $(4,3)$ that are parallel under a general connection on the spinor bundle. This description is given in terms of a coherent system of mutually orthogonal and isotropic one forms and follows from the characterization of the stabilizer of an isotropic spinor as the stabilizer of a highly degenerate three-form that we construct explicitly. Using this result, we show that isotropic spinors parallel under a metric connection with torsion exist when the connection preserves the aforementioned coherent system. This allows us to construct a natural class of metrics of signature $(4,3)$ on $\mathbb{R}^7$ that admit spinors parallel under a metric connection with torsion.

Homogeneous Sasakian and 3-Sasakian Structures from the Spinorial Viewpoint

Abstract:We give a spinorial construction of Sasakian and 3-Sasakian structures in arbitrary dimension, generalizing previously known results in dimensions 5 and 7. Furthermore, we obtain a complete description of the space of invariant spinors on a homogeneous 3-Sasakian space, and show that it is spanned by the Clifford products of invariant differential forms with a certain invariant Killing spinor. Finally, we give a basis for the space of invariant Riemannian Killing spinors on a homogeneous 3-Sasakian space, and determine which of these induce the homogeneous 3-Sasakian structure.

Abstract:A taming symplectic structure provides an upper bound on the area of an approximately pseudoholomorphic curve in terms of its homology class. We prove that, conversely, an almost complex manifold with such an area bound admits a taming symplectic structure. This confirms a speculation by Gromov. We also characterize the cone of taming symplectic structures numerically, prove that complex 2-cycles can be approximated by coarsely holomorphic curves, and provide a lower energy bound for such curves.

Algebraic criteria for stable diffeomorphism of spin 4-manifolds

Abstract:We study closed, connected, spin 4-manifolds up to stabilisation by connected sums with copies of $S^2 \times S^2$. For a fixed fundamental group, there are primary, secondary and tertiary obstructions, which together with the signature lead to a complete stable classification. The primary obstruction exactly detects $\mathbb{CP}^2$-stable diffeomorphism and was previously related to algebraic invariants by Kreck and the authors. In this article we formulate conjectural relationships of the secondary and tertiary obstructions with algebraic invariants: the secondary obstruction should be determined by the (stable) equivariant intersection form and the tertiary obstruction via a $\tau$-invariant recording intersection data between 2-spheres, with trivial algebraic self-intersection, and their Whitney discs. We prove our conjectures for the following classes of fundamental groups: groups of cohomological dimension at most 3, right-angled Artin groups, abelian groups, and finite groups with quaternion or abelian 2-Sylow subgroups. We apply our theory to give a complete algebraic stable classification of spin $4$-manifolds with fundamental group $\mathbb{Z} \times \mathbb{Z}/2$.

Abstract:By constructing concrete complex-oriented maps we show that the eight-fold of the generator of the third integral cohomology of the spin groups Spin(7) and Spin(8) is in the image of the Thom morphism from complex cobordism to singular cohomology, while the generator itself is not in the image. We thereby give a geometric construction for a nontrivial class in the kernel of the differential Thom morphism of Hopkins and Singer for the Lie groups Spin(7) and Spin(8). The construction exploits the special symmetries of the octonions.

Two notes on Spin(7)-structures

Abstract:We derive the explicit formula for the intrinsic torsion of a ${\rm Spin}(7)$-structure on a $8$--dimensional Riemannian manifold $M$. Here, the intrinsic torsion is a difference of the minimal ${\rm Spin}(7)$--connection and the Levi-Civita connection. Hence it is a a section of a bundle $T^{\ast}M\otimes\mathfrak{spin}^{\bot}(M)$. The formula relates the intrinsic torsion with the Lee form $\theta$ and $\Lambda^3_{48}$--component $(\delta\Phi)_{48}$ of a codifferential $\delta\Phi$ of the $4$--form defining a given structure. Using the formula obtained, we compute the condition for a ${\rm Spin}(7)$ structure of type $\mathcal{W}_8$ to be (second order) nearly parallel. Moreover, applying the divergence formula obtained by the author for general Riemannian $G$--structure in another article, we rediscover the well known formula for the scalar curvature in terms of norms of $\theta$, $(\delta\Phi)_{48}$ and the divergence ${\rm div}\theta$. We justify the formula on appropriate examples.
