Abstract:In this paper we propose the concept of formal desingularizations as a substitute for the resolution of algebraic varieties. Though a usual resolution of algebraic varieties provides more information on the structure of singularities there is evidence that the weaker concept is enough for many computational purposes. We give a detailed study of the Jung method and show how it facilitates an efficient computation of formal desingularizations for projective surfaces over a field of characteristic zero, not necessarily algebraically closed. The paper includes a generalization of Duval's Theorem on rational Puiseux parametrizations to the multivariate case and a detailed description of a system for multivariate algebraic power series computations.

Abstract:In this paper, we study minimal Legendrian surfaces Σ immersed in the tangent sphere bundle T 1 R 3 . We classify (1) totally geodesic Legendrian surfaces, (2) closed minimal Legendrian surfaces of genus smaller than or equal to 1 and complete minimal Legendrian surfaces with the non-negative Gauss curvature, and (3) complete stable minimal Legendrian surfaces.

Abstract:We prove a general fusion theorem for complete orientable minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with finite total curvature. As a consequence, complete orientable minimal surfaces of weak finite total curvature with exotic geometry are produced. More specifically, universal surfaces (i.e., surfaces from which all minimal surfaces can be recovered) and space-filling surfaces with arbitrary genus and no symmetries.

Abstract:We show that the bordism group of closed 3-manifolds with positive scalar curvature (psc) metrics is trivial by explicit methods. Our constructions are derived from scalar-flat K{ä}hler ALE surfaces discovered by Lock-Viaclovsky. Next, we study psc 4-manifolds with metric singularities along points and embedded circles. Our psc null-bordisms are essential tools in a desingularization process developed by Li-Mantoulidis. This allows us to prove a non-existence result for singular psc metrics on enlargeable 4-manifolds with uniformly Euclidean geometry. As a consequence, we obtain a positive mass theorem for asymptotically flat 4-manifolds with non-negative scalar curvature and low regularity.

Explicit desingularisation of Kummer surfaces in characteristic two via specialisation

Abstract:We study the birational geometry of the Kummer surfaces associated to the Jacobian varieties of genus two curves, with a particular focus on fields of characteristic two. In order to do so, we explicitly compute a projective embedding of the Jacobian of a general genus two curve and, from this, we construct its associated Kummer surface. This explicit construction produces a model for desingularised Kummer surfaces over any field of characteristic not two, and specialising these equations to characteristic two provides a model of a partial desingularisation. Adapting the classic description of the Picard lattice in terms of tropes, we also describe how to explicitly find completely desingularised models of Kummer surfaces whenever the $p$-rank is not zero. In the final section of this paper, we compute an example of a Kummer surface with everywhere good reduction over a quadratic number field, and draw connections between the models we computed and a criterion that determines when a Kummer surface has good reduction at two.

Abstract:The quest for regular models of arithmetic surfaces allows different viewpoints and approaches: using valuations or a covering by charts. In this article, we sketch both approaches and then show in a concrete example, how surprisingly beneficial it can be to exploit properties and techniques from both worlds simultaneously.

Abstract:By establishing some differential geometry theory on the 1-lightlike surfaces, we show several geometric properties of the 1-lightlike surfaces which are completely different from non-lightlike surfaces. Based on these theories, we consider the singularities of the 1-lightlike surfaces in semi- Euclidean 4-space with index two as an application of the theory of Legendrian singularities. We characterize the singularities of the 1-lightlike focal hypersurfaces and describe the contacts between the 1-lightlike surface and the anti de Sitter 3-sphere at singular points by employing Montaldi's theory. In addition, we also discuss the detailed differential geometric properties of the 1-lightlike focal hypersurfaces in semi-Euclidean 4-space with index 2. Finally, an example will be proposed to explain our findings. (C) 2016 All rights reserved.

A Variational Theory for The Area of Legendrian Surfaces

Abstract:We study a new notion of critical point for the area of surfaces under the Legendrian constraint, called parametrized Hamiltonian stationary Legendrian varifolds (PHSLVs). We establish several fundamental properties of these objects, including their sequential compactness and an optimal regularity result, showing that they are smooth immersions away from a locally finite set of branch points and Schoen Wolfson conical singularities. This generalizes in particular the regularity theory of Schoen Wolfson for minimizers to general critical points. This theory can be used to show two new variational results: every minmax operation with the area of (closed, immersed) Legendrian surfaces in a closed Sasakian 5-dimensional manifold is achieved by a Hamiltonian stationary map with this regularity; also, the minimal area in any given exact isotopy class of Legendrian immersions of $S^2$ is realized by such a map. Along the way, we prove an effective monotonicity formula for general two-dimensional stationary varifolds in the Legendrian setting, as well as the closure of integral stationary varifolds among rectifiable ones, in spite of the lack of compactness of the latter.

Abstract:We study outer Lipschitz geometry of real semialgebraic or, more general, definable in a polynomially bounded o-minimal structure over the reals, circular surface germs, i.e., surfaces which link is homeomorphic to $S^1$. In particular, we show there are finitely many canonical Lipschitz invariant basic building blocks for the space of all arcs in those surfaces, called "segments" and "nodal zones". We also investigate and determine some necessary and sufficient conditions on such a surface so that it can be reduced to a Hölder triangle which shares with this surface almost the same Lipschitz invariant building blocks.

Abstract:We study singularities and geometric properties of surfaces given by the singular loci of normal congruence of frontals with pure-frontal singular points. These surfaces consist of the normal ruled surface and focal surfaces of the initial frontal. For the normal ruled surface, we give characterizations of singularities in terms of geometric invariants of the initial frontal defined on the set of singular points. For focal surfaces, we show relation between certain singularities of them and geometric property of the given frontal. Moreover, we consider behavior of Gaussian curvature of focal surfaces of frontal with a $5/2$-cuspidal edge.

Abstract:Let $(f,g): (S,s) \to (\mathbb{C}^2, 0)$ be a finite morphism from a germ of normal complex analytic surface to the germ of $\mathbb{C}^2$ at the origin. We show that the affine algebraic curve in $\mathbb{C}^2$ defined by the initial Newton polynomial of a defining series of the discriminant germ of $(f,g)$ depends up to toric automorphisms only on the germs of curves defined by $f$ and $g$. This result generalizes a theorem of Gryszka, Gwoździewicz and Parusiński, which is the special case in which $(S,s)$ is smooth. Our proof uses a common generalization of formulas of Lê and Casas-Alvero for the intersection number of the discriminant with a germ of plane curve. It uses also a theorem of Delgado and Maugendre characterizing the special members of pencils of curves on normal surface singularities. We apply it to the pencils generated by all pairs $(f^b, g^a)$, for varying positive integral exponents $a, b$, following a strategy initiated by Gwoździewicz. This is similar to the Eudoxian method of comparison of magnitudes by comparing the sizes of their positive integral multiples.

Abstract:This} paper presents relations between least area and normal surfaces, embedded in either a Euclidean or hyperbolic $3$-manifold. A relaxed version of normal surfaces, termed quasi-normal, is introduced, and it is shown that under appropriate conditions, every embedded least area surface is quasi-normal with respect to a fine enough fat triangulation of the $3$-manifold. In addition, it is shown that the intersections of a least area surface with the tetrahedra of such fine enough triangulation, even when not as simple as in the case of normal surfaces, are also well behaved. Finally, it is shown that a least area surface, when considered as a quasi normal surface, gives rise to a sequence of piecewise flat surfaces termed as flat-associated surfaces, and this sequence converges to the given least area surface and approximates its area.

On the desingularisation of moduli of principal bundles

Abstract:In \cite{nr} Narasimhan and Ramanan and in \cite{desing}, Seshadri constructed desingularisations of the moduli space $M^{ss}_{_{\text{SL}(2)}}$ of semistable $\SL(2)$-bundles on a smooth projective curve $C$ of genus $g \geq 3$. Seshadri's construction was even modular and canonical. In this paper, we construct a smooth modular compactification of the moduli of stable principal $H$-bundles when $H$ is a simply connected almost simple algebraic group of type ${\tt B}_{_\ell}, {\tt D}_{_\ell}, {\tt G}_{_2}, {\tt F}_{_4}~~or~~{\tt C}_{_3}$. These spaces give canonical desingularisations of the moduli space $M^{ss}_{_H}$ of semistable principal $H$-bundles and thereby, a comprehensive generalisation of \cite{desing}.

Abstract:The complete classification of the orbits on subspaces under the action of the projective stabiliser of (classical) algebraic varieties is a challenging task, and few classifications are complete. We focus on a particular action of $\PGL(2,q^2)$ (and $\PSL(2,q^2)$) arising from the Hermitian Veronese curve in $\PG(3, q^2)$, a maximal rational curve embedded on a smooth Hermitian surface with some fascinating properties. The study of its orbits leads to a new construction of quasi-Hermitian surfaces: sets of points with the same combinatorial and geometric properties as a non-degenerate Hermitian surface.

Abstract:We introduce and study a "desingularization" of a Lie groupoid $G$ along an "$A(G)$-tame" submanifold $L$ of the space of units $M$. An $A(G)$-tame submanifold $L \subset M$ is one that has, by definition, a tubular neighborhood on which $A(G)$ becomes a thick pull-back Lie algebroid. The construction of the desingularization $[[G:L]]$ of $G$ along $L$ is based on a canonical fibered pull-back groupoid structure result for $G$ in a neighborhood of the tame $A(G)$-submanifold $L \subset M$. This local structure result is obtained by integrating a certain groupoid morphism, using results of Moerdijk and Mrcun (Amer. J. Math. 2002). Locally, the desingularization $[[G:L]]$ is defined using a construction of Debord and Skandalis (Advances in Math., 2014). The space of units of the desingularization $[[G:L]]$ is $[M:L]$, the blow up of $M$ along $L$. The space of units and the desingularization groupoid $[[G:L]]$ are constructed using a gluing construction of Gualtieri and Li (IMRN 2014). We provide an explicit description of the structure of the desingularized groupoid and we identify its Lie algebroid, which is important in analysis applications. We also discuss a variant of our construction that is useful for analysis on asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds. We conclude with an example relating our constructions to the so called "edge pseudodifferential calculus." The paper is written such that it also provides an introduction to Lie groupoids designed for applications to analysis on singular spaces.
