Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the geometry of the moduli space of curves by using the curvature properties of direct image sheaves of vector bundles. We show that the moduli space $(M_g, \omega_{WP})$ of curves with genus $g>1$ has dual-Nakano negative and semi-Nakano-negative curvature, and in particular, it has non-positive Riemannain curvature operator and also non-positive complex sectional curvature. As applications, we prove that any submanifold in $M_g$ which is totally geodesic in $A_g$ with finite volume must be a ball quotient. We also show that, on a Kodaira (deformation) surface, there is no K\"ahler metric with non-positive Riemannain sectional curvature although it possesses K\"ahler metrics with strictly negative holomorphic bisectional curvature.
Recurrent oligomers in proteins - an optimal scheme reconciling accurate and concise backbone representations in automated folding and design studies

Abstract:A novel scheme is introduced to capture the spatial correlations of consecutive amino acids in naturally occurring proteins. This knowledge-based strategy is able to carry out optimally automated subdivisions of protein fragments into classes of similarity. The goal is to provide the minimal set of protein oligomers (termed ``oligons'' for brevity) that is able to represent any other fragment. At variance with previous studies where recurrent local motifs were classified, our concern is to provide simplified protein representations that have been optimised for use in automated folding and/or design attempts. In such contexts it is paramount to limit the number of degrees of freedom per amino acid without incurring in loss of accuracy of structural representations. The suggested method finds, by construction, the optimal compromise between these needs. Several possible oligon lengths are considered. It is shown that meaningful classifications cannot be done for lengths greater than 6 or smaller than 4. Different contexts are considered were oligons of length 5 or 6 are recommendable. With only a few dozen of oligons of such length, virtually any protein can be reproduced within typical experimental uncertainties. Structural data for the oligons is made publicly available.

Tropical curves of unibranch points and hypertangency

Abstract:We study integral plane curves meeting at a single unibranch point and show that such curves must satisfy two equivalent conditions. A numeric condition: the local invariants of the curves at the contact point must be arithmetically related. A geometric condition: the tropical curves that we associate to the contact point must be isomorphic. Moreover, we prove closed formulas for the delta-invariant of a unibranch singularity, and for the dimension of the loci of curves with an assigned unibranch point. Our work is motivated by interest in the Lang exceptional set.

Abstract:Twistor spaces are certain compact complex threefolds with an additional real fibre bundle structure. We focus here on twistor spaces over $3\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^2$. Such spaces are either small resolutions of double solids or they can be described as modifications of conic bundles. The last type is the more special one: they deform into double solids. We give an explicit description of this deformation, in a more general context.

Abstract:A nonlocal curvature flow is introduced to evolve locally convex curves in the plane. It is proved that this flow with any initial locally convex curve has a global solution, keeping the local convexity and the elastic energy of the evolving curve, and that, as the time goes to infinity, the curve converges to a smooth, locally convex curve of constant $k$-order width. In particular, the limiting curve is a multiple circle if and only if the initial locally convex curve is $k$-symmetric.

Abstract:Motivated by the classical Euler elastic curves, David A. Singer posed in 1999 the problem of determining a plane curve whose curvature is given in terms of its position. We propound the same question in Lorentz-Minkowski plane, focusing on spacelike and timelike curves. In this article, we study those curves in $\mathbb{L}^2$ whose curvature depends on the Lorentzian pseudodistance from the origin, and those ones whose curvature depends on the Lorentzian pseudodistance through the horizontal or vertical geodesic to a fixed lightlike geodesic. Making use of the notions of geometric angular momentum (with respect to the origin) and geometric linear momentum (with respect to the fixed lightlike geodesic) respectively, we get two abstract integrability results to determine such curves through quadratures. In this way, we find out several new families of Lorentzian spiral, special elastic and grim-reaper curves whose intrinsic equations are expressed in terms of elementary functions. In addition, we provide uniqueness results for the generatrix curve of the Enneper's surface of second kind and for Lorentzian versions of some well known curves in the Euclidean setting, like the Bernoulli lemniscate, the cardioid, the sinusoidal spirals and some non-degenerate conics. We are able to get arc-length parametrizations of them and they are depicted graphically.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to provide an explicit basis of the miniversal deformation of a monomial curve defined by a free semigroup -- these curves make up a notable family of complete intersection monomial curves. First, we dispense a general decomposition result of a basis of the miniversal deformation of any complete intersection monomial curve. As a consequence, we explicitly calculate this basis in the particular case of a monomial curve defined from a free semigroup. This explicit computation yields some estimates for the dimension of the moduli space of these family of curves.

On super curves and supervolumes

Abstract:We study the geometry of super curves with a chosen supervolume form. We consider the algebra of divergence free vector fields $S(1|N)$ associated to such curves. When $N=2$ its derived algebra, called $S(2)$, defines a special family of curves, named $S(2)$-super curves. We exhibit an involution on the moduli space of such curves that generalizes Deligne's involution for $N=1$ super curves. The fixed point set of this involution consists on Manin's $SUSY_2$-super curves. We describe the moduli spaces of these curves.

We prove that for , the corresponding curve of the pencil does not have the generic topology if and only if either the corresponding curve of the pulled-back pencil to the normalized surface has a non generic topology or w is a limit value for the function along the singular locus of , where f and g are generators of the pencil.

Abstract:We prove an existence and uniqueness theorem about spherical helicoidal (in particular, rotational) surfaces with prescribed mean or Gaussian curvature in terms of a continuous function depending on the distance to its axis. As an application in the case of vanishing mean curvature, it is shown that the well-known conjugation between the belicoid and the catenoid in Euclidean three-space extends naturally to the 3-sphere to their spherical versions and determine in a quite explicit way their associated surfaces in the sense of Lawson. As a key tool, we use the notion of spherical angular momentum of the spherical curves that play the role of profile curves of the minimal helicoidal surfaces in the 3-sphere.

Abstract:A curve is rectifying if it lies on a moving hyperplane orthogonal to its curvature vector. In this work, we extend the main result of [Chen 2017, Tamkang J. Math. 48, 209] to any space dimension: we prove that rectifying curves are geodesics on hypercones. We later use this association to characterize rectifying curves that are also slant helices in three-dimensional space as geodesics of circular cones. In addition, we consider curves that lie on a moving hyperplane normal to (i) one of the normal vector fields of the Frenet frame and to (ii) a rotation minimizing vector field along the curve. The former class is characterized in terms of the constancy of a certain vector field normal to the curve, while the latter contains spherical and plane curves. Finally, we establish a formal mapping between rectifying curves in an $(m + 2)$-dimensional space and spherical curves in an $(m + 1)$-dimensional space. A curve is rectifying if it lies on a moving hyperplane orthogonal to its curvature vector.

Abstract:Motivated by a problem posed by David A. Singer in 1999 and by the elastic spherical curves, we study the spherical curves whose curvature is expressed in terms of the distance to a great circle (or from a point). By introducing the notion of spherical angular momentum, we provide new characterizations of some well known curves, like the mentioned elastic curves, spherical catenaries, loxodromic-type spherical curves, the Viviani's curve, and the spherical Archimedean spirals curves. Furthermore, we show that they may be obtained as critical points of some energy curvature functionals. We also find out several new families of spherical curves whose intrinsic equations are expressed in terms of elementary functions or Jacobi elliptic functions, and we are able to get arc length parametrizations of them.
