Abstract:We show how to use formal desingularizations (defined earlier by the first author) in order to compute the global sections (also called adjoints) of twisted pluricanonical sheaves. These sections define maps that play an important role in the birational classification of schemes.

Abstract:We study the locus of smooth hypersurfaces inside the Hilbert scheme of a smooth projective complex variety. In the spirit of scanning, we construct a map to a continuous section space of a projective bundle, and show that it induces an isomorphism in integral homology in a range of degrees growing with the ampleness of the hypersurfaces. When the ambient variety is a curve, this recovers a result of McDuff about configuration spaces. We compute the rational cohomology of the section space and exhibit a phenomenon of homological stability for hypersurfaces with first Chern class going to infinity. For simply connected varieties, the rational cohomology is shown to agree with the stable cohomology of a moduli space of hypersurfaces, with a peculiar tangential structure, as studied by Galatius and Randal-Williams.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, we analyze the Hessian locus associated to a general cubic hypersurface, by describing its singular locus and its desingularization for every dimension. The strategy is based on strong connections between the Hessian and the quadrics defined as partial derivatives of the cubic polynomial. In particular, we focus our attention on the singularities of the Hessian hypersurface associated to the general cubic four-fold. It turns out to be a minimal surface of general type: its analysis is developed by exploiting the nature of this surface as a degeneracy locus of a symmetric vector bundle map and by describing an unramified double cover, which is constructed in a more general setting.

Abstract:In this paper we propose the concept of formal desingularizations as a substitute for the resolution of algebraic varieties. Though a usual resolution of algebraic varieties provides more information on the structure of singularities there is evidence that the weaker concept is enough for many computational purposes. We give a detailed study of the Jung method and show how it facilitates an efficient computation of formal desingularizations for projective surfaces over a field of characteristic zero, not necessarily algebraically closed. The paper includes a generalization of Duval's Theorem on rational Puiseux parametrizations to the multivariate case and a detailed description of a system for multivariate algebraic power series computations.

Intersections of Real Symmetric Hypersurfaces

Abstract:We prove a symmetric version of Bézout's theorem. More precisely, we show that the symmetric orbit type of a transverse intersection of complex symmetric hypersurfaces in projective space is determined by the degrees. In the projective plane, we fully classify the possible orbit types of such intersection loci using completely elementary methods. From this classification, we obtain strong restrictions on the number of real points in the intersection of real symmetric curves. We also provide a partial classification in $\mathbb{P}^3_{\mathbb{C}}$, with a similar restriction on real points.

IVHS via Kuznetsov components and categorical Torelli theorems for weighted hypersurfaces

Abstract:We study the categorical Torelli theorem for smooth (weighted) hypersurfaces in (weighted) projective spaces via the Hochschild--Serre algebra of its Kuznetsov component. In the first part of the paper, we show that a natural graded subalgebra of the Hochschild--Serre algebra of the Kuznetsov component of a degree $d$ weighted hypersurface in $\mathbb{P}(a_0,\ldots,a_n)$ reconstructs the graded subalgebra of the Jacobian ring generated by the degree $t:=\mathrm{gcd}(d,\Sigma_{i=0}^na_i)$ piece under mild assumptions. Using results of Donagi and Cox--Green, this gives a categorical Torelli theorem for most smooth hypersurfaces $Y$ of degree $d \le n$ in $\mathbb{P}^n$ such that $d$ does not divide $n+1$ (the exception being the cases of the form $(d,n) = (4, 4k + 2)$, for which a result of Voisin lets us deduce a generic categorical Torelli theorem when $k \ge 150$). Next, we show that the Jacobian ring of the Veronese double cone can be reconstructed from its graded subalgebra of even degree, thus proving a categorical Torelli theorem for the Veronese double cone. In the second part, we rebuild the infinitesimal Variation of Hodge structures of a series of (weighted) hypersurfaces from their Kuznetsov components via the Hochschild--Serre algebra. As a result, we prove categorical Torelli theorems for two classes of (weighted) hypersurfaces: $(1):$ Generalized Veronese double cone; $(2):$ Certain $k$-sheeted covering of $\mathbb{P}^n$, when they are generic. Then, we prove a refined categorical Torelli theorem for a Fano variety whose Kuznetsov component is a Calabi--Yau category of dimension $2m+1$. Finally, we prove the actual categorical Torelli theorem for generalized Veronese double cone and $k$-sheeted covering of $\mathbb{P}^n$.

Abstract:We construct virtual fundamental classes on nested Hilbert schemes of points and curves in complex nonsingular projective surfaces. These classes recover the virtual classes of Seiberg-Witten theory as well as the (reduced) stable theory, and play a crucial role in the reduced Donaldson-Thomas theory of local-surface-threefolds that we study in [GSY17b] (arXiv:1807.05697). We show that certain integrals against the virtual fundamental classes of punctual nested Hilbert schemes are expressed as integrals over the products of the Hilbert scheme of points. We are able to find explicit formulas for some of these integrals by relating them to Carlsson-Okounkov's vertex operator formulas.

Abstract:We use arithmetic and Hodge-theoretic techniques to study pencils of Calabi-Yau varieties realized as highly symmetric hypersurfaces in Grassmannians and their quotients, demonstrating that their geometric properties are distinct from the classical mirrors of Calabi-Yau Grassmannian hypersurfaces.

Abstract:Let $X\subseteq{\mathbb P}^{n+1}$ be an integral hypersurface of degree $d$. We show that each locally Cohen-Macaulay instanton sheaf $\mathcal E$ on $X$ with respect to $\mathcal O_X\otimes\mathcal O_{\mathbb P^{n+1}}(1)$ in the sense of Definition 1.3 in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2205.04767" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2205.04767">arXiv:2205.04767</a> [math.AG] yields the existence of Steiner bundles $\mathcal G$ and $\mathcal F$ on $\mathbb P^{n+1}$ of the same rank $r$ and a morphism $\varphi\colon \mathcal G(-1)\to\mathcal F^\vee$ such that the form defining $X$ to the power $\mathrm{rk}(\mathcal E)$ is exactly $\det(\varphi)$. We inspect several examples for low values of $d$, $n$ and $\mathrm{rk}(\mathcal E)$. In particular, we show that the form defining a smooth integral surface in $\mathbb P^3$ is the pfaffian of some skew-symmetric morphism $\varphi\colon \mathcal F(-1)\to\mathcal F^\vee$, where $\mathcal F$ is a suitable Steiner bundle on $\mathbb P^3$ of sufficiently large even rank.

Obstructions to semiorthogonal decompositions for singular projective varieties II: Representation theory

Abstract:We show that odd-dimensional projective varieties with tilting objects and only ADE-hypersurface singularities are nodal, i.e. they only have $A_1$-singularities. This is a very special case of more general obstructions to the existence of semiorthogonal decompositions for projective Gorenstein varieties. More precisely, for many isolated hypersurface singularities, we show that Kuznetsov-Shinder's categorical absorptions of singularities cannot contain tilting objects. The key idea is to compare singularity categories of projective varieties to singularity categories of finite-dimensional associative Gorenstein algebras. The former often contain special generators, called cluster-tilting objects, which typically have loops and $2$-cycles in their quivers. In contrast, quivers of cluster-tilting objects in the latter categories, can never have loops or $2$-cycles.

Symmetries and vanishing theorems for symplectic varieties

Abstract:We describe the local and Steenbrink vanishing problems for singular symplectic varieties with isolated singularities. We do this by constructing a morphism $$\mathbb D_X(\underline \Omega_X^{n+p}) \to \underline \Omega_X^{n+p}$$ for a symplectic variety $X$ of dimension $2n$ for $\frac{1}{2}\mathrm{codim}_X(X_{\mathrm{sing}}) < p$, where $\underline \Omega_X^k$ is the $k^{th}$-graded piece of the Du Bois complex and $\mathbb D_X$ is the Grothendieck duality functor. We show this morphism is a quasi-isomorphism when $p = n-1$ and that this symmetry descends to the Hodge filtration on the intersection Hodge module. As applications, we describe the higher Du Bois and higher rational properties for symplectic germs and the cohomology of primitive symplectic 4-folds.

Explicit desingularisation of Kummer surfaces in characteristic two via specialisation

Abstract:We study the birational geometry of the Kummer surfaces associated to the Jacobian varieties of genus two curves, with a particular focus on fields of characteristic two. In order to do so, we explicitly compute a projective embedding of the Jacobian of a general genus two curve and, from this, we construct its associated Kummer surface. This explicit construction produces a model for desingularised Kummer surfaces over any field of characteristic not two, and specialising these equations to characteristic two provides a model of a partial desingularisation. Adapting the classic description of the Picard lattice in terms of tropes, we also describe how to explicitly find completely desingularised models of Kummer surfaces whenever the $p$-rank is not zero. In the final section of this paper, we compute an example of a Kummer surface with everywhere good reduction over a quadratic number field, and draw connections between the models we computed and a criterion that determines when a Kummer surface has good reduction at two.

Abstract:Twisted separable functors generalize the separable functors of Nastasescu, Van den Bergh and Van Oystaeyen, and provide a convenient tool to compare various projective dimensions. We discuss when an adjoint functor is twisted separable, obtaining a version of Rafael's Theorem in the twisted case. As an application, we show that if $R$ is Hopf-Galois object over a Hopf algebra $A$, then their Hochschild cohomological dimension coincide, provided that the cohomological dimension of $A$ is finite and that $R$ has a unital twisted trace with respect to a semi-colinear automorphism.

Abstract:Mixed metaphors have been neglected in recent metaphor research. This paper suggests that such neglect is short-sighted. Though mixing is a more complex phenomenon than straight metaphors, the same kinds of reasoning and knowledge structures are required. This paper provides an analysis of both parallel and serial mixed metaphors within the framework of an AI system which is already capable of reasoning about straight metaphorical manifestations and argues that the processes underlying mixing are central to metaphorical meaning. Therefore, any theory of metaphors must be able to account for mixing.

Bigness of adjoint linear subsystem and approximation theorems with ideal sheaves on weakly pseudoconvex manifolds

Abstract:Let $X$ be a weakly pseudoconvex manifold and $L\longrightarrow X$ be a holomorphic line bundle with a singular positive Hermitian metric $h$. In this article, we provide a points separation theorem and an embedding for the adjoint linear subsystem including the multiplier ideal sheaf $\mathscr{I}(h^m)$, with respect to an appropriate set excluding a singular locus of $h$. We also show that the adjoint bundle of $L$ is big. To handle analytical methods, we first establish an approximation of singular Hermitian metrics on relatively compact subsets from Demailly's approximation that preserves ideal sheaves and is compatible with blow-ups. Using the blow-ups obtained from this approximation, we provide the embedding and big-ness for the adjoint bundle $K_X\otimes L^{\otimes m}\otimes\mathscr{I}(h^m)$ on each sublevel set $X_c$, and a singular holomorphic Morse inequality including ideal sheaves. Furthermore, we establish the approximation theorem for holomorphic sections of the adjoint bundle including the multiplier ideal sheaf, i.e. $K_X\otimes L\otimes\mathscr{I}(h)$, as a key result in the process of globalizing. Using these results, we can achieve points separation on each $X_c\setminus Z_c$, where $Z_c$ is an analytic subset obtained as a singular locus of the approximation, and then globalize this to provide embeddings. Finally, as an application of this blow-ups, we present a global singular Nakano vanishing theorem.

Abstract:Several papers have been written studying unexpected hypersurfaces. We say a finite set of points Z admits unexpected hypersurfaces if a general union of fat linear subspaces imposes less that the expected number of conditions on the ideal of Z. In this paper, we introduce the concept of a very unexpected hypersurface. This is a stronger condition which takes into account an explanation for some hypersurfaces previously considered unexpected. We then develop a duality theory to relate the study of very unexpected hypersurfaces to the derivations of dual hyperplane arrangements. This allows us to generalize results in the plane of Cook, Harbourne, Migliore, Nagel Faenzi, and Vallés to higher dimensions. In particular, we give a criterion to determine if a set Z admits very unexpected hypersurfaces in the case Z is invariant under the action of an irreducible reflection group on the ambient projective space. Our approach has new applications even in the projective plane where we are able to place strong conditions on sets of points Z which admit certain types of unexpected curves. We close relating Terao's Freeness Conjecture for line arrangements to a conjecture due to G. Dirac on configurations of points in the real plane.

Singular cohomology of symplectic quotients by circle actions and Kirwan surjectivity

Abstract:Let $M$ be a symplectic manifold carrying a Hamiltonian $S^1$-action with momentum map $J:M \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ and consider the corresponding symplectic quotient $\mathcal{M}_0:=J^{-1}(0)/S^1$. We extend Sjamaar's complex of differential forms on $\mathcal{M}_0$, whose cohomology is isomorphic to the singular cohomology $H(\mathcal{M}_0;\mathbb{R})$ of $\mathcal{M}_0$ with real coefficients, to a complex of differential forms on $\mathcal{M}_0$ associated with a partial desingularization $\widetilde{\mathcal{M}}_0$, which we call resolution differential forms. The cohomology of that complex turns out to be isomorphic to the de Rham cohomology $H(\widetilde{ \mathcal{M}}_0)$ of $\widetilde{\mathcal{M}}_0$. Based on this, we derive a long exact sequence involving both $H(\mathcal{M}_0;\mathbb{R})$ and $H(\widetilde{ \mathcal{M}}_0)$ and give conditions for its splitting. We then define a Kirwan map $\mathcal{K}:H_{S^1}(M) \rightarrow H(\widetilde{\mathcal{M}}_0)$ from the equivariant cohomology $H_{S^1}(M)$ of $M$ to $H(\widetilde{\mathcal{M}}_0)$ and show that its image contains the image of $H(\mathcal{M}_0;\mathbb{R})$ in $H(\widetilde{\mathcal{M}}_0)$ under the natural inclusion. Combining both results in the case that all fixed point components of $M$ have vanishing odd cohomology we obtain a surjection $\check \kappa:H^\textrm{ev}_{S^1}(M) \rightarrow H^\textrm{ev}(\mathcal{M}_0;\mathbb{R})$ in even degrees, while already simple examples show that a similar surjection in odd degrees does not exist in general. As an interesting class of examples we study abelian polygon spaces.

Abstract:This is a continuation of prior work of the author on cosection localization for d-manifolds. We construct reduced virtual fundamental classes for derived manifolds with surjective cosections and cosection localized virtual fundamental classes for $(-2)$-shifted symplectic derived schemes in larger generality. Moreover, using recent results of Oh-Thomas, we show that the algebraic and differential geometric constructions of reduced and cosection localized virtual fundamental classes of $(-2)$-shifted symplectic derived schemes yield the same result in homology. We obtain applications towards the construction and integrality of reduced invariants in Donaldson-Thomas theory of Calabi-Yau fourfolds.

Birational geometry of hypersurfaces in products of weighted projective spaces

Abstract:We study the birational geometry of hypersurfaces in products of weighted projective spaces, extending results previously established by J. C. Ottem. For most cases where these hypersurfaces are Mori dream spaces, we determine all relevant cones and characterise their birational models, along with the small $\mathbf{Q}$-factorial modifications to them. We also provide a presentation of their Cox ring. Finally, we establish the birational form of the Kawamata-Morrison cone conjecture for terminal Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in Gorenstein products of weighted projective spaces.
