Abstract:Let $\alpha$ be a polygonal Jordan curve in $\bfR^3$. We show that if $\alpha$ satisfies certain conditions, then the least-area Douglas-Radó disk in $\bfR^3$ with boundary $\alpha$ is unique and is a smooth graph. As our conditions on $\alpha$ are not included amongst previously known conditions for embeddedness, we are enlarging the set of Jordan curves in $\bfR^3$ which are known to be spanned by an embedded least-area disk. As an application, we consider the conjugate surface construction method for minimal surfaces. With our result we can apply this method to a wider range of complete catenoid-ended minimal surfaces in $\bfR^3$.

Abstract:For each integer m>1 and l>0 we construct a pair of compact embedded minimal surfaces of genus 1+4m(m-1)l. These surfaces desingularize the m Clifford tori meeting each other along a great circle at the angle of \pi/m. They are invariant under a finite group of screw motions and have no reflection symmetry across a great sphere.

Abstract:We prove the existence of embedded non planar free boundary minimal disks into rotationally symmetric ellipsoids of $\mathbb{R}^3$. The construction relies on the optimization of combinations of first and second Steklov eigenvalues renormalized by the length of the boundary, among metrics on the disk. We also prove that non planar free boundary harmonic maps from a disk into a ellipsoid of $\mathbb{R}^3$ such that the coordinate functions are first or second Steklov eigenfunctions with respect to the associated critical metric is a minimal immersion (without branched points) and that if the critical metric is even with respect to the coordinates of the disk, then the minimal immersion is an embedding.

Abstract:For each large enough $m\in\mathbb{N}$ we construct by PDE gluing methods a closed embedded smooth minimal hypersurface ${\breve{M}_m}$ doubling the equatorial three-sphere $\mathbb{S}_{\mathrm{eq}}^3$ in $\mathbb{S}^4(1)$, with ${\breve{M}_m}$ containing $m^2$ bridges modelled after the three-dimensional catenoid and centered at the points of a square $m\times m$ lattice $L$ contained in the Clifford torus $\mathbb{T}^2\subset \mathbb{S}_{\mathrm{eq}}^3$. This answers a long-standing question of Yau in the case of $\mathbb{S}^4(1)$ and long-standing questions of Hsiang. Similarly we construct a self-shrinker ${\breve{M}_{\mathrm{shr},m}}$ of the Mean Curvature Flow in $\mathbb{R}^4$ doubling the three-dimensional spherical self-shrinker $\mathbb{S}_{\mathrm{shr}}^3\subset \mathbb{R}^4$ with the bridges centered at the points of a square $m\times m$ lattice $L$ contained in a Clifford torus $\mathbb{T}^2\subset \mathbb{S}_{\mathrm{shr}}^3$. Both constructions respect the symmetries of the lattice $L$ as a subset of $\mathbb{S}^4(1)$ or $\mathbb{R}^4$ and are based on the Linearized Doubling (LD) methodology which was first introduced in the construction of minimal surface doublings of $\mathbb{S}_{\mathrm{eq}}^2$ in $\mathbb{S}^3(1)$. Furthermore $\breve{M}_m$ converges as $m \to\infty$ in the varifold sense to $2\mathbb{S}_{\mathrm{eq}}^3$, and its volume $|\breve{M}_m| < 2|\mathbb{S}_{\mathrm{eq}}^3|$.

Abstract:This paper exhibits a structural strategy to produce new minimal submanifolds in spheres based on two given ones. The method is to spin the given minimal submanifolds by a curve $\gamma\subset \mathbb S^3$ in a balanced way and leads to resulting minimal submanifolds $-$ spiral minimal products, which form a two-dimensional family arising from intriguing pendulum phenomena decided by $C$ and $\tilde C$. With $C=0$, we generalize the construction of minimal tori in $\mathbb S^3$ explained in [Bre13] to higher dimensional situations. When $C=-1$, we recapture previous relative work in [CLU06] and [HK12] for special Legendrian submanifolds in spheres, and moreover, can gain numerous $\mathscr C$-totally real and totally real embedded minimal submanifolds in spheres and in complex projective spaces respectively. A key ingredient of the paper is to apply a beautiful extension result of minimal submanifolds by Harvey and Lawson [HL75] for a rotational reflection principle in our situation to establish curve $\gamma$.

Singularities of Discrete Indefinite Affine Minimal Surfaces

Abstract:A smooth affine minimal surface with indefinite metric can be obtained from a pair of smooth non-intersecting spatial curves by Lelieuvre's formulas. These surfaces may present singularities, which are generically cuspidal edges and swallowtails. By discretizing the initial curves, one can obtain by the discrete Lelieuvre's formulas a discrete affine minimal surface with indefinite metric. The aim of this paper is to define the singular edges and vertices of the corresponding discrete asymptotic net in such a way that the most relevant properties of the singular set of the smooth version remain valid.

Abstract:We extend Smale's singular bridge principle (see \cite{NS2}) for $n$-dimensional strictly stable minimal cones in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ $(n \geq 7$) to arbitrary codimension when $n \geq 4$. We then apply the procedure to copies of the Lawson-Osserman cone to produce a four dimensional minimal graph in $\mathbb{R}^7$ with any finite number of isolated singularities.

Abstract:In this paper we prove a rigidity statement for free boundary minimal surfaces produced via min-max methods. More precisely, we prove that for any Riemannian metric $g$ on the 3-ball $B$ with non-negative Ricci curvature and $\mathrm{II}_{\partial B}\ge g_{|\partial B}$, there exists a free boundary minimal disk $\Delta$ of least area among all free boundary minimal disks in $(B,g)$. Moreover, the area of any such $\Delta$ equals to the width of $(B,g)$, $\Delta$ has index one, and the length of $\partial\Delta$ is bounded from above by $2\pi$. Furthermore, the length of $\partial\Delta$ equals to $2\pi$ if and only if $(B,g)$ is isometric to the Euclidean unit ball. This is related to a rigidity result obtained by F.C. Marques and A. Neves in the closed case. The proof uses a rigidity statement concerning half-balls with non-negative Ricci curvature which is true in any dimension.

Abstract:We consider surfaces in ${\mathbb R}^3$ of type ${\mathbb S}^2$ which minimize the Willmore functional with prescribed isoperimetric ratio. The existence of smooth minimizers was proved by Schygulla (Archive Rational Mechanics and Analysis, 2012). In the singular limit when the isoperimetric ratio converges to zero, he showed convergence to a double round sphere in the sense of varifolds. Here we give a full blowup analysis of this limit, showing that the two spheres are connected by a catenoidal neck. Besides its geometric interest, the problem was studied as a simplified model in the theory of cell membranes, see e.g. Berndl, Lipowsky, Seifert (Physical Review A, 1991).

Abstract:The paper is devoted to desingularization of finitely smooth vector fields on the plane. Let the difference of germs of a finitely smooth vector field and an analytic vector field be sufficiently flat at a common singular point. Then these vector fields share similar behavior under desingularization. In particular, the nice desingularizations of both vector fields are achieved in the same number of steps. Moreover, for any analytic vector field with a singular point of multiplicity μ 0 \mu _0 , nice desingularization of the finitely smooth vector field is achieved after μ 0 + 2 \mu _0+2 steps. In addition, a description is presented for topologically sufficient jets of finitely smooth vector fields at nonmonodromic singular points.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that every strictly convex 3-ball with nonnegative Ricci-curvature contains at least 3 embedded free-boundary minimal 2-disks for any generic metric, and at least 2 solutions even without genericity assumption. Our approach combines ideas from mean curvature flow, min-max theory and degree theory. We also establish the existence of smooth free-boundary mean-convex foliations. In stark contrast to our prior work in the closed setting, the present result is sharp for generic metrics.
