Abstract:Under Jensen's diamond principle , we construct a simple Efimov space K whose space of nonatomic probability measures is first-countable and sequentially compact. These two properties of imply that the space of probability measures P ( K ) on K is selectively sequentially pseudocompact. We show that any sequence of probability measures on K that converges to a purely atomic measure converges in norm, and any sequence of probability measures on K converging to zero in sup-norm has a subsequence converging to a nonatomic probability measure. We show also that the Banach space C ( K ) of continuous functions on K has the Gelfand–Phillips property but it does not have the Grothendieck property.

Abstract:We consider the relationship between normality and semi-proximality. We give a consistent example of a first countable locally compact Dowker space that is not semi-proximal, and two ZFC examples of semi-proximal non-normal spaces. This answers a question of Nyikos. One of the examples is a subspace of $(\omega+1) \times \omega_1$. In contrast, we show that every normal subspace of a finite power of $\omega_1$ is semi-proximal.

Abstract:The main purpose of this paper is to explore normality in terms of distances between points and sets. We prove some important consequences on realvalued contractions, i.e. functions not enlarging the distance, showing that as in the classical context of closures and continuous maps, normality in terms of distances based on an appropriate numerical notion of $\gamma$-separation of sets, has far reaching consequences on real valued contractive maps, where the real line is endowed with the Euclidean metric. We show that normality is equivalent to (1) separation of $\gamma$-separated sets by some Urysohn contractive map, (2) to Katětov-Tong's interpolation, stating that for bounded positive realvalued functions, between an upper and a larger lower regular function, there exists a contractive interpolating map and (3) to Tietze's extension theorem stating that certain contractions defined on a subspace can be contractively extended to the whole space. The appropriate setting for these investigations is the category of approach spaces, but the results have (quasi)-metric counterparts in terms of non-expansive maps. Moreover when restricted to topological spaces, classical normality and its equivalence to separation by a Urysohn continuous map, to Katětov-Tong's interpolation for semicontinuous maps and to Tietze's extension theorem for continuous maps are recovered.

Abstract:We construct a compact Hausdorff space $K$ such that the space $P(K)$ of Radon probabiblity measures on $K$ considered with the weak$^*$ topology (induced from the space of continuous functions $C(K)$) is countably tight which is a generalization of sequentiality (i.e., if a measure $\mu$ is in the closure of a set $M$, there is a countable $M'\subseteq M$ such that $\mu$ is in the closure of $M'$) but $K$ carries a Radon probability measure which has uncountable Maharam type (i.e., $L_1(\mu)$ is nonseparable). The construction uses (necessarily) an additional set-theoretic assumption (the $\diamondsuit$ principle) as it was already known, by a result of Fremlin, that it is consistent that such spaces do not exist. This should be compared with the result of Plebanek and Sobota who showed that countable tightness of $P(K\times K)$ implies that all Radon measures on $K$ have countable type. So, our example shows that the tightness of $P(K\times K)$ and of $P(K)\times P(K)$ can be different as well as $P(K)$ may have Corson property (C) while $P(K\times K)$ fails to have it answering a question of Pol. Our construction is also a relevant example in the general context of injective tensor products of Banach spaces complementing recent results of Avilés, Martínez-Cervantes, Rodríguez and Rueda Zoca.

Abstract:The present article describes the precise structure of the -spaces of projective limit measures by introducing a category-theoretical perspective. This analysis is applied to measures on vector spaces and in particular to Gaussian measures on nuclear topological vector spaces. A simple application to constructive quantum field theory (QFT) is given through the Osterwalder–Schrader axioms.

Abstract:We deal with measures of noncompactness on a Banach space X in a new way: Assume that C is the collection of all nonempty bounded closed convex subsets of X, let K subset of C consist of all compact convex sets and let Omega be the closed unit ball of the dual X*. Then (1) C is a normed semigroup endowed with the set addition A circle plus B = (A+B) over bar, the usual scalar multiplication of sets and the norm (sic) . (sic) defined by (sic)C(sic) = sup(c is an element of C) parallel to c parallel to for C is an element of C; (2) J : C -> C-b (Omega) defined by JC - sup(c is an element of C) <., c > is a positively linear order isometry. We further show that (3) both E-C = (JC - JC) over bar and E-K = (JK - JK) over bar are Banach sublattices and E-K is a lattice ideal of E-C; (4) the quotient space Q(E-C) equivalent to E-C / E-K is an abstract M-space; consequently, it is order isometric to a sublattice T(E-C / E-K) of a C(K) space for some compact Hausdorff space K. Moreover, (5) TQJC is contained in the positive cone of C(K) and the ball measure of noncompactness beta of X satisfies beta(B) = parallel to TQJ[(co) over barB parallel to(C(K)) for all nonempty bounded B subset of X. As an application, we give an easy construction of homogeneous (respectively, regular) measures of noncompactness of X via positive (respectively, evaluation) functionals on the space C(K), and further we prove that every Banach space admitting a closed sub-space with an infinite decomposition, in particular, containing an unconditional basic sequence has inequivalent homogeneous measures of noncompactness. Hence, this gives an affirmative answer to a question proposed by Mallet-Paret and Nussbaum.

Abstract:We establish some geometrical properties of the space of idempotent probability measures. In particular, for a compact $X$ it is established that if the space $I_{3}(X)\backslash X$ is hereditary normally, then $X$ is metrizable; some subsets allocate of the space of idempotent probability measures which are, respectively, $Z$-sets, $\max$-$\mbox{plus}$-convex subsets, $G_\delta$-sets.

Abstract:We introduce an alternative description of coarse proximities. We define a coarse normality condition for connected coarse spaces and show that this definition agrees with large scale normality defined in [3] and asymptotic normality defined in [7]. We utilize the alternative definition of coarse proximities to show that a connected coarse space naturally induces a coarse proximity if and only if the connected coarse space is coarsely normal. We conclude with showing that every connected asymptotic resemblance space induces a coarse proximity if and only if the connected asymptotic resemblance space is asymptotically normal.

Abstract:We introduce a generalization for bounded geometry that we call bounded scale measure. We show that bounded scale measure is a coarse invariant unlike bounded geometry. We then show equivalent definitions for spaces with bounded scale measure and show other properties that spaces with bounded scale measure satisfy. From there, we generalize property A from uniformly discrete metric spaces to large scale spaces with bounded geometry. Lastly, we construct a definition for property A for large scale spaces with bounded scale measure and show that this definition of property A is a coarse invariant.

Abstract:A real number $x$ is normal with respect to an integer base $b \geq 2$ if its digit expansion in this base is ``equitable'', in the sense that for $k \geq 1$, every ordered sequence of $k$ digits from $\{0, 1, \ldots, b-1\}$ occurs in the digit expansion of $x$ with the same limiting frequency. Borel's classical result \cite{b09} asserts that Lebesgue-almost every number $x$ is normal in every base $b \geq 2$. This three-part article considers sets of partial normality. Given any choice of integer bases $\mathscr{B}, \mathscr{B}' \subseteq \{2, 3, \ldots\}$, we investigate measure-theoretic properties of the set $\mathscr{N}(\mathscr{B}, \mathscr{B}')$, whose members are, by definition, normal in the bases of $\mathscr{B}$ and non-normal in the bases of $\mathscr{B}'$. A pair of sets $(\mathscr{B}, \mathscr{B}')$ is compatible if any $(b, b') \in \mathscr{B} \times \mathscr{B}'$ is multiplicatively independent. For compatible $(\mathscr{B}, \mathscr{B}')$ with $\mathscr{B}' \ne \emptyset$, we construct singular probability measures supported on $\mathscr N(\mathscr{B}, \mathscr{B}')$ that are both Frostman and Rajchman, extending prior work of Pollington \cite{p81} and Lyons \cite{l86}. The Rajchman property completely answers a question of Kahane and Salem \cite{Kahane-Salem-64}, identifying $\mathscr N(\mathscr{B}, \mathscr{B}')$ as a set of multiplicity (in the Fourier-analytic sense) if and only if $(\mathscr{B}, \mathscr{B}')$ is compatible. The methodological contribution of the article is the construction of a class of probability measures called skewed measures. These measures depend on a number of parameters that can be independently adjusted to ensure (subsets of) properties such as almost everywhere normality, non-normality, ball conditions and Fourier decay.

Abstract:A circle, centered at the origin and with radius chosen so that it has non-empty intersection with the integer lattice Z2\documentclass[12pt]{minimal}\usepackage{amsmath}\usepackage{wasysym}\usepackage{amsfonts}\usepackage{amssymb}\usepackage{amsbsy}\usepackage{mathrsfs}\usepackage{upgreek}\setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt}\begin{document}$${\mathbb Z}^{2}$$\end{document}, gives rise to a probability measure on the unit circle in a natural way. Such measures, and their weak limits, are said to be attainable from lattice points on circles. We investigate the set of attainable measures and show that it contains all extreme points, in the sense of convex geometry, of the set of all probability measures that are invariant under some natural symmetries. Further, the set of attainable measures is closed under convolution, yet there exist symmetric probability measures that are not attainable. To show this, we study the geometry of projections onto a finite number of Fourier coefficients and find that the set of attainable measures has many singularities with a “fractal” structure. Abstract:This paper is devoted to studying the representation of measures of non-generalized compactness, in particular, measures of noncompactness, of non-weak compactness and of non-super weak compactness, etc., defined on Banach spaces and its applications. With the aid of a three-time order-preserving embedding theorem, we show that for every Banach space X, there exist a Banach function space C(K) for some compact Hausdorif space K and an order-preserving affine mapping T from the super space B of all the nonempty bounded subsets of X endowed with the Hausdorff metric to the positive cone C(K)(+) of C(K) such that for every convex measure, in particular, the regular measure, homogeneous measure and sublinear measure of non-generalized compactness mu on X, there is a convex function F on the cone V = T(B) which is Lipschitzian on each bounded set of V such that F(T(B)) = mu(B), for all B is an element of B. As its applications, we show a class of basic integral inequalities related to an initial value problem in Banach spaces, and prove a solvability result of the initial value problem, which is an extension of some classical results due to BanaA and Goebel (1980), Goebel and Rzymowski (1970) and Rzymowski (1971).
