On a generalization of compact and connected spaces

Abstract:In this paper we will give two different natural generalizations of compact spaces and connected spaces simultaneously. We will show that these generalizations coincide for the subspaces of the real line and that they differ for subspaces of plane.

Compact spaces homeomorphic to their respective squares

Abstract:We deal with topological spaces homeomorphic to their respective squares. Primarily, we investigate the existence of large families of such spaces in some subclasses of compact metrizable spaces. As our main result we show that there is a family of size continuum of pairwise non-homeomorphic compact metrizable zero-dimensional spaces homeomorphic to their respective squares. This answers a question of W. J. Charatonik. We also discuss the situation in the classes of continua, Peano continua and absolute retracts.

Abstract:This paper focuses on investigating generalized relative interior notions for sets in locally convex topological vector spaces with particular attentions to graphs of set-valued mappings and epigraphs of extended-real-valued functions. We introduce, study, and utilize a novel notion of quasi-near convexity of sets that is an infinite-dimensional extension of the widely acknowledged notion of near convexity. Quasi-near convexity is associated with the quasi-relative interior of sets, which is investigated in the paper together with other generalized relative interior notions for sets, not necessarily convex. In this way, we obtain new results on generalized relative interiors for graphs of set-valued mappings in convexity and generalized convexity settings.

On the Compactness and Continuity of Polytopes

Abstract:This paper considers the fundamental properties of polytopes in Banach space. A norm is defined for the polytopes and the preliminarily properties are then analyzed. It is proved that the linear summation of two polytopes is still a polytope. For a given compact set, its polytope is compact if and only if the supporting space is with finite dimension. If the dimension of its supporting space is infinite, the polytope is totally bounded. The continuities of the polytopes is analyzed. It is verified it is lower semi-continuous, and the null set of weak inverse is a linear subspace.

Abstract:In [Generalized centers of finite sets in Banach spaces. Acta Math Univ Comenian (N.S.). 1997;66(1):83–115], Veselý developed the idea of generalized centers for finite sets in Banach spaces. In this work, we explore the concept of restricted F -center property for a triplet (X,Y,F(X)) , where Y is a subspace of a Banach space X and F(X) is the family of finite subsets of X . In addition, we generalize the analysis to include all closed, bounded subsets of X . Similar to how Lindenstrauss characterized n.2.I.P. , we characterize n.X.I.P. . So, it is possible to figure out that Y has n.X.I.P. in X for all natural numbers n if and only if radY(F)=radX(F) for all finite subsets F of Y . It then turns out that, for all continuous, monotone functions f , the f -radii viz. radYf(F),radXf(F) are same whenever the generalized radii viz. radY(F),radX(F) are also same, for all finite subsets F of Y . We establish a variety of characterizations of central subspaces of Banach spaces. With reference to an appropriate subfamily of closed and bounded subsets, it appears that a number of function spaces and subspaces exhibit the restricted weighted Chebyshev center property.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce some versions of relative connectedness of subspaces of a topological space and we give some facts and relations among them. We prove that these relative versions satisfy some of the classical properties of connectedness. Additionally, we apply our results to the theory of hyperspaces, aiming to address a general problem posed by Arhangel'skii (Comment Math Univ Carolin 36:305–325, 1995, Problem 3).

Abstract:We consider two natural topologies on the space $S(X\times Y,Z)$ of all separately continuous functions defined on the product of two topological spaces $X$ and $Y$ and ranged into a topological or metric space $X$. These topologies are the cross-open topology and the cross-uniform topology. We show that these topologies coincides if $X$ and $Y$ are pseudocompacts and $Z$ is a metric space. We prove that a compact space $K$ embeds into $S(X\times Y,Z)$ for infinite compacts $X$, $Y$ and a metrizable space $Z\supseteq\mathbb{R}$ if and only if the weight of $K$ is less than the sharp cellularity of both spaces $X$ and $Y$.

Topology and its Applications

Abstract:The result of J. R. Kline and R. L. Moore (1919) says that a compact subset of the plane homeomorphic to a subset of the reals lies on the arc. Motivated by this result, we give a purely topological characterisation of compact sets of the reals. This allows us to reduce investigations of Cantorvals to properties of countable linear orders and to show, applying the Mazurkiewicz–Sierpiński Theorem (1920), that there exist continuum many non-homeomorphic L -Cantorvals.

Abstract:In recent work, the authors developed a simple method of constructing topological spaces from certain well-behaved partially ordered sets -- those coming from sequences of relations between finite sets. This method associates a given poset with its spectrum, which is a compact T_1 topological space. In this paper, we focus on the case where such finite sets have a graph structure and the relations belong to a given graph category. We relate topological properties of the spectrum to combinatorial properties of the graph categories involved. We then utilise this to exhibit elementary combinatorial constructions of well-known continua as Fraïssé limits of finite graphs in categories with relational morphisms.

Abstract:In general Banach spaces, the metric projection map lacks the powerful properties it enjoys in Hilbert spaces. There are a few generalized projections that have been proposed in order to resolve many of the deficiencies of the metric projection. However, such notions are predominantly studied in Banach spaces with rich topological structures, such as uniformly convex Banach spaces. In this paper, we investigate two notions of generalized projection in general Banach spaces. Various examples are provided to demonstrate the proposed notions and the loss of structure in the generalized projections after migrating from specially structured Banach spaces to general Banach spaces. Connections between the generalized projection and the metric projection are thoroughly explored.

Abstract:For a space X let be the set of compact subsets of X ordered by inclusion. A map is a relative Tukey quotient if it carries compact covers to compact covers. When there is such a Tukey quotient write , and write if and vice versa. We investigate the initial structure of pairs under the relative Tukey order, focussing on the case of separable metrizable spaces. Connections are made to Menger spaces. Applications are given demonstrating the diversity of free topological groups, and related free objects, over separable metrizable spaces.
