Abstract:The author was recently able to provide a cohomological interpretation of Tate's Riemann-Roch formula for number fields using some new harmonic analysis objects, ghost-spaces. When trying to investigate these objects in general, we realized the importance of functions and measures on locally compact abelian groups that are both positive and positive-definite at the same time. It looks like this class of functions and measures was not systematically studied before. The goal of this paper is to partially fill in this gap. We answer some of the natural questions involving these functions and measures, especially those that satisfy some extra integrability conditions. We also study some operations and constructions involving these functions and measures. There are several very interesting open questions, that we are only able to point out at this moment. In particular, the structure of the cone of such functions is not clear even when the group is just $\R.$

Abstract:We study the mathematical structure of the notion of measurement space, which extends aspects of noncommutative topology that are based on quantale theory. This yields a geometric model of physical measurements that provides a realist picture, yet also operational, such that measurements and classical information arise interdependently as primitive concepts. A derived notion of classical observer caters for a mathematical formulation of Bohr's classical/quantum divide. Two important classes of measurement spaces are obtained, respectively from C*-algebras and from second-countable locally compact open sober topological groupoids. The latter yield measurements of classical type and relate to Schwinger's notion of selective measurement. We show that the measurement space associated to the reduced C*-algebra of any second-countable locally compact Hausdorff étale groupoid is canonically equipped with a classical observer, and we establish a correspondence between properties of the observer and properties of the groupoid.

Abstract:This article discusses the structure of topological spaces: We study regular and complete spaces over topological quasigroups and quasirings, as well as their embeddings and separations, homeomorphisms and isomorphisms, as well as relations between compactifications and the completeness of spaces over topological quasigroups. We also consider applications to topological spaces of families of mappings over topological quasigroups and quasirings together with their restrictions, openness, and continuous bijections. Some necessary theorems are established about the structure of topological quasigroups.

Abstract:Let $\pi$ be a discrete group, and let $G$ be a compact connected Lie group. $\mathrm{Hom}(\pi,G)_0$ denotes the null-component of the space of homomorphisms from $\pi$ to $G$, and $\mathrm{map}_*(B\pi,BG)_0$ denotes the null-component of the space of maps from $B\pi$ to $BG$. Since the classifying space functor is continuous, there is a continuous map $\Theta\colon\mathrm{Hom}(\pi,G)_0\to\mathrm{map}_*(B\pi,BG)_0$. Atiyah and Bott studied this map when $\pi$ is a surface group, and proved surjectivity in rational cohomology. In this paper, we obtain the condition that the map $\Theta$ is surjective or not in rational cohomology when $\pi$ is $\mathbf{Z}^m$ for $m\geq 3$ and $G$ is a compact connected Lie group.

Topological properties of some classes of submodules

Abstract:We study the topology of a class of proper submodules and some of its distinguished subclasses and call them structure spaces. We give several criteria for the quasi-compactness of these structure spaces. We study $T_0$ and $T_1$ separation properties and characterize structure spaces in which nonempty irreducible closed subsets have unique generic points. We provide a sufficient condition for the connectedness of structure spaces. We prove that the structure spaces of proper submodules are spectral, and moreover, we characterize the spectral structure spaces of Noetherian modules. Finally, we discuss continuous functions between these spaces.

A Few Projective Classes of (Non-Hausdorff) Topological Spaces

Abstract:A class of topological spaces is projective (resp., $\omega$-projective) if and only if projective systems of spaces (resp., with a countable cofinal subset of indices) in the class are still in the class. A certain number of classes of Hausdorff spaces are known to be, or not to be, ($\omega$-) projective. We examine classes of spaces that are not necessarily Hausdorff. Sober and compact sober spaces form projective classes, but most classes of locally compact spaces are not even $\omega$-projective. Guided by the fact that the stably compact spaces are exactly the locally compact, strongly sober spaces, and that the strongly sober spaces are exactly the sober, coherent, compact, weakly Hausdorff (in the sense of Keimel and Lawson) spaces, we examine which classes defined by combinations of those properties are projective. Notably, we find that coherent sober spaces, compact coherent sober spaces, as well as (locally) strongly sober spaces, form projective classes.

Abstract:The present article describes the precise structure of the -spaces of projective limit measures by introducing a category-theoretical perspective. This analysis is applied to measures on vector spaces and in particular to Gaussian measures on nuclear topological vector spaces. A simple application to constructive quantum field theory (QFT) is given through the Osterwalder–Schrader axioms.

Abstract:The theory of generalized metric spaces is an active topic in general topology. In this article, we utilize the concepts of ideal convergence and networks to discuss the metrization problem and the mutual classification problem between spaces and mappings in topological spaces. We define I - s n -metrizable spaces, obtain several characterizations of I - s n -metrizable spaces, and establish some mapping relations between I - s n -metrizable spaces and semi-metric spaces. These not only generalize some theorems in generalized metric theory, but also find further applications of ideal convergence in general topology.

Abstract:We study non-linear functionals, including quasi-linear functionals, p-conic quasi-linear functionals, d-functionals, r-functionals, and their relationships to deficient topological measures and topological measures on locally compact spaces. We prove representation theorems and show, in particular, that there is an order-preserving, conic-linear bijection between the class of finite deficient topological measures and the class of bounded p-conic quasi-linear functionals. Our results imply known representation theorems for finite topological measures and deficient topological measures. When the space is compact we obtain four equivalent definitions of a quasi-linear functional and four equivalent definitions of functionals corresponding to deficient topological measures.

A Halmos-von Neumann theorem for actions of general groups

Abstract:We give a new categorical approach to the Halmos-von Neumann theorem for actions of general topological groups. As a first step, we establish that the categories of topological and measure-preserving irreducible systems with discrete spectrum are equivalent. This allows to prove the Halmos-von Neumann theorem in the framework of topological dynamics. We then use the Pontryagin and Tannaka-Krein duality theories to obtain classification results for topological and then measure-preserving systems with discrete spectrum. As a byproduct, we obtain a complete isomorphism invariant for compactifications of a fixed topological group.

Abstract:Let $\pi$ be a discrete group, and let $G$ be a compact connected Lie group. Then there is a map $\Theta\colon\mathrm{Hom}(\pi,G)_0\to\mathrm{map}_*(B\pi,BG)_0$ between the null-components of the spaces of homomorphism and based maps, which sends a homomorphism to the induced map between classifying spaces. Atiyah and Bott studied this map for $\pi$ a surface group, and showed that it is surjective in rational cohomology. In this paper, we prove that the map $\Theta$ is surjective in rational cohomology for $\pi=\mathbb{Z}^m$ and the classical group $G$ except for $SO(2n)$, and that it is not surjective for $\pi=\mathbb{Z}^m$ with $m\ge 3$ and $G=SO(2n)$ with $n\ge 4$. As an application, we consider the surjectivity of the map $\Theta$ in rational cohomology for $\pi$ a finitely generated nilpotent group. We also consider the dimension of the cokernel of the map $\Theta$ in rational homotopy groups for $\pi=\mathbb{Z}^m$ and the classical groups $G$ except for $SO(2n)$.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a path connected, locally path connected and semilocally simply connected space; let $\tilde{X}$ be its universal cover. We discuss the existence and description of a Haar system on the fundamental groupoid $\Pi_1(X)$ of $X$. The existence of a Haar system on $\Pi_1(X)$ is justified when $X$ is a second countable, locally compact and Hausdorff. We provide equivalent criteria for the existence of the Haar system on a locally compact (locally Hausdorff) fundamental groupoid in terms of certain measures on $X$ and $\tilde{X}$. $\mathrm{C}^*(\Pi_1(X))$ is described using a result of Muhly, Renault and Williams. Finally, two formulae for the Haar system on $\Pi_1(X)$ in terms of measures on $X$ or $\tilde{X}$ are given.

Abstract:We study generic properties of topological groups in the sense of Baire category. First, we investigate countably infinite groups. We extend a classical result of B. H. Neumann, H. Simmons and A. Macintyre on algebraically closed groups and the word problem. Recently, I. Goldbring, S. Kunnawalkam Elayavalli, and Y. Lodha proved that every isomorphism class is meager among countably infinite groups. In contrast, it follows from the work of W. Hodges on model-theoretic forcing that there exists a comeager isomorphism class among countably infinite abelian groups. We present a new elementary proof of this result. Then, we turn to compact metrizable abelian groups. We use Pontryagin duality to show that there is a comeager isomorphism class among compact metrizable abelian groups. We discuss its connections to the countably infinite case. Finally, we study compact metrizable groups. We prove that the generic compact metrizable group is neither connected nor totally disconnected; also it is neither torsion-free nor a torsion group.

Abstract:We strengthen our previous results regarding the moduli spaces of Zoll metrics and Zoll projective structures on S^2. In particular, we describe a concrete, open condition which suffices to guarantee that a totally real embedding of RP^2 in CP_2 arises from a unique Zoll projective structure on the 2-sphere. Our methods ultimately reflect the special role such structures play in the initial value problem for the 3-dimensional Lorentzian Einstein-Weyl equations.

Abstract:We characterize the smallest finite spaces with the same homotopy groups of the spheres. Similarly, we describe the minimal finite models of any finite graph. We also develop new combinatorial techniques based on finite spaces to study classical invariants of general topological spaces.

Abstract:We extend the Dikranjan-Uspenskij notions of c-compact and h-complete topological group to the morphism level, study the stability properties of the newly defined types of maps, such as closure under direct products, and compare them with their counterparts in topology. We assume Hausdorffness only when our proofs require us to do so, which leads to new results and the affirmation of some facts that were known in a Hausdorff context.

Abstract:We show that for every non-elementary hyperbolic group, an associated topological flow space admits a coding based on a transitive subshift of finite type. Applications include regularity results for Manhattan curves, the uniqueness of measures of maximal Hausdorff dimension with potentials, and the real analyticity of intersection numbers for families of dominated representation, thus providing a direct proof of a result established by Bridgeman, Canary, Labourie and Sambarino in 2015.
