Abstract:A characterization of unconditional convergent series is given for the case of sequentially complete locally convex spaces. From it we show that if E is a barrelled space with continuous dual E', then (E', beta(E', E)) contains no copy of (c(0), parallel to.parallel to(infinity)) if and only if every continuous linear operator T : E --> l(1) is both compact and sequentially compact.

Abstract:It is proved that $P(\beta X)=\beta P(X)$ if and only if $P(X)$ is a pseudocompact space, where $P(X)$ is the space of probability Radon measures with weak topology and $\beta X$ is a Stone-Cech extension of the space $X$. A locally compact pseudocompact space $X$ is constructed such that $P(X)$ is not pseudocompact. Conditions are obtained under which $P(X)$ is pseudocompact.

Abstract:We present some sufficient conditions ensuring the upper semicontinuity and the continuity of the Bregman projection operator ΠCg and the relative projection operator PCg in terms of the D-approximate (weak) compactness for a nonempty closed set C in a Banach space X. We next present certain sufficient conditions as well as equivalent conditions for the convexity of a Chebyshev subset of a Banach space X. Our results extend the corresponding results of [H.H. Bauschke, X.F. Wang, J. Ye and X. M. Yuan, Bregman distances and Chebyshev sets, J. Approx. Theory 159 (2009) 3–25] to infinite dimensional spaces.

Abstract:We consider a special one-parameter family of d-dimensional random, homogeneous self-similar iterated function systems (IFSs) satisfying the finite type condition. The object of our study is the positivity of Lebesgue measure and the existence of interior points in these random sets and in particular the existence of an interesting parameter interval where the attractor has positive Lebesgue measure, but empty interior almost surely conditioned on the attractor not being empty. We give a sharp bound on the critical probability for the case of positivity Lebesgue measure using the theory of multitype branching processes in random environments and in some special cases on the critical probability for the existence of interior points. Using a recent result of Tom Rush, we provide a family of such random sets where there exists a parameter interval for which the corresponding attractor has a positive Lebesgue measure, but empty interior almost surely conditioned on the attractor not being empty.

Abstract:In this paper we generalize Wiener's characterization of continuous measures to compact homogenous manifolds. In particular, we give necessary and sufficient conditions on probability measures on compact semisimple Lie groups and nilmanifolds to be continuous. The methods use only simple properties of heat kernels.

Abstract:This work studies the convexity of a class of positive definite probability measures with density functionsρ=cλ∑n=0∞g(n)Cnλwλ, that are generated through the interval characteristic sequences. We discuss when such measures supported in an interval are convex and demonstrate how convexity is preserved under multiplication by certain multipliers and under the intertwining product. A key message to be delivered from this work is: any integrable function f on the interval with a polynomial expansion that has relatively fast absolute convergence, can be decomposed into a non-unique pair of positive convex interval probabilities (f+,f−)∈Eλ′×Eλ′ up to normalization, in the sense that f=f+−f−, where Eλ′ is a class of convex functions. Consequently not only the study of an interval distribution is reduced to the study of the properties of class Eλ′, but also the discontinuous probabilistic Galerkin schemes can be simplified. As concrete examples the decomposition of polynomials and truncated normal distribution are computed and graphically illustrated. Such interval measures lead to localized spherical probability measures, and as a convex expression of probability measure is a Jensen type inequality for spherical random variables. Based on the spherical information entropy models, one dependent on the domain partition and the other not, we propose three minimization formulations for the probabilistic finite element method, including one that mixes the least-squares and entropy models.

Abstract:The paper contains a very simple proof of the classical Hasumi's theorem that each usco mapping defined on an extremally disconnected space has a continuous selection. The paper also contains a very simple proof of a recent result about extension of densely defined continuous selections for compact-valued continuous mappings, in fact a generalisation of this result to all usco mappings with a regular range.

Abstract:Under Jensen's diamond principle , we construct a simple Efimov space K whose space of nonatomic probability measures is first-countable and sequentially compact. These two properties of imply that the space of probability measures P ( K ) on K is selectively sequentially pseudocompact. We show that any sequence of probability measures on K that converges to a purely atomic measure converges in norm, and any sequence of probability measures on K converging to zero in sup-norm has a subsequence converging to a nonatomic probability measure. We show also that the Banach space C ( K ) of continuous functions on K has the Gelfand–Phillips property but it does not have the Grothendieck property.

Abstract:Methods for measuring convexity defects of compacts in R^n abound. However, none of the those measures seems to take into account continuity. Continuity in convexity measure is essential for optimization, stability analysis, global optimality, convergence analysis, and accurate modelling as it ensures robustness and facilitates the development of efficient algorithms for solving convex optimization problems. This paper revisits the axioms underlying convexity measures by enriching them with a continuity hypothesis in Hausdorff's sense. Having provided the concept's theoretical grounds we state a theorem underlining the necessity of restricting ourselves to non-point compacts. We then construct a continuous convexity measure and compare it to existing measures.

Abstract:We prove that the smallest minimizer s(f) of a real convex function f is less than or equal to a real point x if and only if the right derivative of f at x is non-negative. Similarly, the largest minimizer t(f) is greater or equal to x if and only if the left derivative of f at x is non-positive. From this simple result we deduce measurability and semi-continuity of the functionals s and t. Furthermore, if f has a unique minimizing point, so that s(f) = t(f), then the functional is continuous at f. With these analytical preparations we can apply Continuous Mapping Theorems to obtain several Argmin theorems for convex stochastic processes. The novelty here are statements about classical distributional convergence and almost sure convergence, if the limit process does not have a unique minimum point. This is possible by replacing the natural topology on R with the order topologies. Another new feature is that not only sequences but more generally nets of convex stochastic processes are allowed.

Abstract:For random compositions of independent and identically distributed measurable maps on a Polish space, we study the existence and finitude of absolutely continuous ergodic stationary probability measures (which are, in particular, physical measures) whose basins of attraction cover the whole space almost everywhere. We characterize and hierarchize such random maps in terms of their associated Markov operators, as well as show the difference between classes in the hierarchy by plenty of examples, including additive noise, multiplicative noise, and iterated function systems. We also provide sufficient practical conditions for a random map to belong to these classes. For instance, we establish that any continuous random map on a compact Riemannian manifold with absolutely continuous transition probability has finitely many physical measures whose basins of attraction cover Lebesgue almost all the manifold.

Abstract:A novel selection principle was introduced by Dorantes-Aldama and Shakhmatov: a topological space $X$ is termed {\em selectively pseudocompact} if for any sequence $(U_n:n\in {\omega})$ of pairwise disjoint non-empty open sets of $X$, one can choose points $x_n\in U_n$ such that the sequence $(x_n:n\in {\omega})$ has an accumulation point. In this paper, we explore various versions of this principle when we permit the selection of finite, scattered, or nowhere dense sets instead of just singletons. We develop a method to prove that the aforementioned versions of selective pseudocompactness are indeed distinct from one another.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to studying the representation of measures of non-generalized compactness, in particular, measures of noncompactness, of non-weak compactness and of non-super weak compactness, etc., defined on Banach spaces and its applications. With the aid of a three-time order-preserving embedding theorem, we show that for every Banach space X, there exist a Banach function space C(K) for some compact Hausdorif space K and an order-preserving affine mapping T from the super space B of all the nonempty bounded subsets of X endowed with the Hausdorff metric to the positive cone C(K)(+) of C(K) such that for every convex measure, in particular, the regular measure, homogeneous measure and sublinear measure of non-generalized compactness mu on X, there is a convex function F on the cone V = T(B) which is Lipschitzian on each bounded set of V such that F(T(B)) = mu(B), for all B is an element of B. As its applications, we show a class of basic integral inequalities related to an initial value problem in Banach spaces, and prove a solvability result of the initial value problem, which is an extension of some classical results due to BanaA and Goebel (1980), Goebel and Rzymowski (1970) and Rzymowski (1971).

Abstract:Consider a measurable space with a finite vector measure. This measure defines a mapping of the $\sigma$-field into a Euclidean space. According to Lyapunov's convexity theorem, the range of this mapping is compact and, if the measure is atomless, this range is convex. Similar ranges are also defined for measurable subsets of the space. We show that the union of the ranges of all subsets having the same given vector measure is also compact and, if the measure is atomless, it is convex. We further provide a geometrically constructed convex compactum in the Euclidean space that contains this union. The equality of these two sets, that holds for two-dimensional measures, can be violated in higher dimensions.

Abstract:We prove that for any given modulus of continuity there exist (uncountably many) uniformly expanding maps of the circle whose derivatives have as an optimal modulus of continuity and which preserve an invariant probability measure equivalent to Lebesgue whose density is -continuous, and also (uncountably many) uniformly expanding maps of the circle whose derivatives have as an optimal modulus of continuity which preserve Lebesgue measure. Moreover, we show that many of these maps, including those which preserve Lebesgue measure, have unbounded distortion.

Abstract:We establish the existence of Lebesgue-equivalent conservative and ergodic σ -finite invariant measures for a wide class of one-dimensional random maps consisting of piecewise convex maps. We also estimate the size of invariant measures around a small neighbourhood of a fixed point where the invariant density functions may diverge. Application covers random intermittent maps with critical points or flat points. We also illustrate that the size of invariant measures tends to infinite for random maps whose right branches exhibit a strongly contracting property on average, so that they have a strong recurrence to a fixed point.
