Angle-Selective Photonic Crystals for Multi-Physical Sensing Applications

Abstract:This study delves into a high-transmission photonic crystals (PCs) optimized for TM wave at a frequency of 43.8 GHz, engineered using photonic band gap (PBG) principles and angle selection is realized. The structure demonstrates a remarkable transmission efficiency at -68° to 0°, consistently exceeding 80%. Using the critical angle to assess the fragility of the medium within PCs, a multi-physic sensor (MS) comprising both the refractive index sensing function (RIS) and the plasma density sensing function (PDS) was proposed. The PDS detects concentrations from 0.4×1018 m-3 to 0.8×1018 m-3 with a sensitivity of 10.925 °/m-3. For RIS, with the change of magnetic field intensity, it can detect the refractive index range of 2.45~2.33 at 1.25 T, 2.33~2.21 at 1.15 T, 2.21~2.09 at 1.05 T, and 2.09~1.97 at 0.65 T and the sensitivities are respective of -28 °/RIU, -16 °/RIU, -18.33 °/RIU, and -9.38 °/RIU, showcasing broad detection ranges and high sensitivities. It is important that maintaining a high-transmission (greater than 0.8) over the range of the RIS from -60 ° to 0 °, enabling dynamic angle selection MS for refractive index and plasma density hold promising prospects for real-time monitoring of refractive index changes in health and the environment can aid in early disease diagnosis and air quality monitoring, while detecting changes in plasma density can detect metabolic activity or harmful substances.
