Abstract:In conventional all-dielectric one-dimensional (1-D) photonic crystals (PCs), photonic band gaps (PBGs) move toward shorter wavelength direction for both p- and s-polarizations according to the Bragg condition. Consequently, it is difficult to achieve broad-angle polarization selectivity in all-dielectric 1-D PCs. In this work, we theoretically design a polarization-sensitive PBG in a 1-D PC comprising single-material hyperbolic metamaterials at mid-infrared wavelengths. As the incident angle goes up, the PBG moves toward longer wavelength direction for p-polarization while moves toward shorter wavelength direction for s-polarization. Assisted by the polarization-sensitive feature of the PBG, we achieve broad-angle polarization selectivity at mid-infrared wavelengths. The working angular width of polarization selectivity is up to 31.76°. The maximal polarization selectivity ratio reaches the order of 103. Our work paves an approach, well within the current fabrication techniques, to achieving broad-angle polarization selectivity.
