Abstract:Trees are very agreeable objects to work with, offering a diversity of behaviour within a structure that is sufficiently simple to admit precise analysis. Thus we are able to offer fairly satisfactory necessary and sufficient conditions on a tree $\Upsilon $ for the existence of equivalent LUR or strictly convex norms on $\C_0(\Upsilon )$ and for norms with the Kadec Property. In particular, we show that for a {\sl finitely branching} tree $\Upsilon $ the space $\C_0(\Upsilon )$ admits a Kadec renorming. Since some finitely branching trees fail the condition for strictly convex renormability, we obtain an example of a Banach space that is Kadec renormable but not strictly convexifiable. Consideration of specially tailored examples enables us to answer the ``three-space problem'' for strictly convex renorming: there exists a Banach space $X$ with a closed subspace $Y$ such that both $Y$ and the quotient $X/Y$ admit strictly convex norms, while $X$ does not. We also solve a problem about the property of mid-point locally uniform convexity (MLUR), showing that this does not imply LUR renormability.

Abstract:We introduce and study two variant JT 2, p and JT G of James Tree space JT . Both spaces are non-Hilbertian, they contain subspaces isomorphic to l 2 , and all such subspaces are complemented. The space JT 2, p is reflexive with an unconditional basis and its non-Hilbertian subspaces contain l p . The space JT G is non-reflexive and its non-Hilbertian subspaces contain c 0 . These examples form the semiclassical basis for an exotic forthcoming construction related to a question of W. Cuellar Carrera, N. de Rancourt and V. Ferenczi.

Abstract:We provide a new proof of S. Bellenot's characterization of the extreme points of the unit ball $B_J$ of James quasi-reflexive space $J$. We also provide an explicit description of the norm of $J^{**}$ which yields an analogous characterization for the extreme points of $B_{J^{**}}$. In the last part of the paper we describe the set of all extreme points of $B_{J^*}$ and its norm closure. It is remarkable that the descriptions of the extreme points of $B_J$ and $B_{J^*}$ are closely connected.

A duality for the class of compact $T_1$-spaces

Abstract:We present a contravariant adjunction between compact $T_1$-spaces and a class of distributive lattices which recomprises key portions of Stone's duality and of Isbell's duality among its instantiations. This brings us to focus on $T_1$-spaces, rather than sober spaces, and to identify points in them with minimal prime filters on some base for a $T_1$-topology (which is what Stone's duality does on the base of clopen sets of compact $0$-dimensional spaces), in spite of completely prime filters on the topology (which is what Isbell's duality does on a sober space). More precisely our contravariant adjunction produces a contravariant, faithful and full embedding of the category of compact $T_1$-spaces with arrows given by closed continuous map as a reflective subcategory of a category $\mathsf{SbfL} $ whose objects are the bounded distributive lattices isomorphic to some base of a $T_1$-topological space (e.g. subfits, when the lattices are frames) and whose arrows are given by (what we call) set-like-morphisms (a natural class of morphisms characterized by a first order expressible constraint). Furthermore this contravariant adjunction becomes a duality when one restricts on the topological side to the category of compact $T_2$-spaces with arbitrary continuous maps, and on the lattice-theoretic side to the category of compact, complete, and normal lattices. A nice by-product of the above results is a lattice-theoretic reformulation of the Stone-Čech compactification theorem which we have not been able to trace elsewhere in the literature.

Abstract:We embed the Lubin-Tate tower into a larger tower of formal schemes, the "degenerating Lubin-Tate tower." We construct a topological realization of the degenerating Lubin-Tate tower, i.e., a compatible family of presheaves of $E_{\infty}$-ring spectra on the étale site of each formal scheme in the degenerating Lubin-Tate tower, which agrees on the base of the tower with the Goerss-Hopkins presheaf on Lubin-Tate space. We define and prove basic properties of nearby cycle and vanishing cycle presheaves of spectra on formal schemes. We apply these constructions to our spectrally-enriched degenerating Lubin-Tate tower to produce, for every spectrum $X$, an "$\ell$-adic topological Jacquet-Langlands (TJL) dual" of $X$. We prove that there is a correspondence between: 1. certain irreducible representations of $Aut(\mathbb{G})$ occurring in $(\mathcal{K}(E(\mathbb{G}))^{\wedge}_{\ell})_*(X)$, and 2. certain supercuspidal irreducible representations of $GL_n$ occuring in the rational homotopy groups of the TJL dual of $X$. Here $E(\mathbb{G})$ is the Morava $E$-theory spectrum of a height $n$ formal group $\mathbb{G}$, and $\mathcal{K}(E(\mathbb{G}))^{\wedge}_{\ell}$ is its algebraic $K$-theory spectrum completed away from the characteristic of the ground field of $\mathbb{G}$. Finally, we prove that at height $1$, TJL duality preserves the $L$-factors. This means that the automorphic $L$-factor of the $GL_1$-representation associated to $(\mathcal{K}(E(\mathbb{G}))^{\wedge}_{\ell})_*(X)$ by TJL duality is precisely the $p$-local Euler factor in a meromorphic $L$-function whose special values in the left half-plane recover the orders of the $KU$-local stable homotopy groups of $X$.

Abstract:This paper develops a Cambrian extension of the work of C. Ceballos, A. Padrol and C. Sarmiento on <math>ν</math>-Tamari lattices and their tropical realizations. For any signature <math>ε∈{±}n</math>, we consider a family of <math>ε</math>-trees in bijection with the triangulations of the <math>ε</math>-polygon. These <math>ε</math>-trees define a flag regular triangulation <math>Tε</math> of the subpolytope <math>conv(ei•,ej∘)|0≤i•</math> of the product of simplices <math>△{0•,…,n•}×△{1∘,…,(n+1)∘}</math>. The oriented dual graph of the triangulation <math>Tε</math> is the Hasse diagram of the (type <math>A</math>) <math>ε</math>-Cambrian lattice of N. Reading. For any <math>I•⊆{0•,…,n•}</math> and <math>J∘⊆{1∘,…,(n+1)∘}</math>, we consider the restriction <math>TI•,J∘ε</math> of the triangulation <math>Tε</math> to the face <math>△I•×△J∘</math>. Its dual graph is naturally interpreted as the increasing flip graph on certain <math>(ε,I•,J∘)</math>-trees, which is shown to be a lattice generalizing in particular the <math>ν</math>-Tamari lattices in the Cambrian setting. Finally, we present an alternative geometric realization of <math>TI•,J∘ε</math> as a polyhedral complex induced by a tropical hyperplane arrangement.

Modularity "for free" in genome architecture?

Abstract:Background: Recent models of genome-proteome evolution have shown that some of the key traits displayed by the global structure of cellular networks might be a natural result of a duplication-diversification (DD) process. One of the consequences of such evolution is the emergence of a small world architecture together with a scale-free distribution of interactions. Here we show that the domain of parameter space were such structure emerges is related to a phase transition phenomenon. At this transition point, modular architecture spontaneously emerges as a byproduct of the DD process. Results: Although the DD models lack any functionality and are thus free from meeting functional constraints, they show the observed features displayed by the real proteome maps when tuned close to a sharp transition point separating a highly connected graph from a disconnected system. Close to such boundary, the maps are shown to display scale-free hierarchical organization, behave as small worlds and exhibit modularity. Conclusions: It is conjectured that natural selection tuned the average connectivity in such a way that the network reaches a sparse graph of connections. One consequence of such scenario is that the scaling laws and the essential ingredients for building a modular net emerge for free close to such transition.

Abstract:We prove that any separable AM-space $X$ has an equivalent lattice norm for which no non-trivial surjective lattice isometries exist. Moreover, if $X$ has no more than one atom, then this new norm may be an AM-norm. As our main tool, we introduce and investigate the class of so called Benyamini spaces, which ``approximate'' general AM-spaces.

Abstract:We introduce some new symmetric tensor categories based on the combinatorics of trees: a discrete family $\mathcal{D}(n)$, for $n \ge 3$ an integer, and a continuous family $\mathcal{C}(t)$, for $t \ne 1$ a complex number. The construction is based on the general oligomorphic theory of Harman--Snowden, but relies on two non-trivial results we establish. The first determines the measures for the class of trees, and the second is a semi-simplicity theorem. These categories have some notable properties: for instance, $\mathcal{C}(t)$ is the first example of a 1-parameter family of pre-Tannakian categories of superexponential growth that cannot be obtained by interpolating categories of moderate growth.

Abstract:For certain HNN extensions including Baumslag-Solitar groups, a treeing is constructed from their certain probability-measure-preserving actions. This is a treeing of a quotient groupoid of the translation groupoid associated with their actions. As its application, for some of those HNN extensions, we show that the kernel of the modular homomorphism is measure equivalent to the direct product of the free group of infinite rank and Z.

Abstract:The Goldman-Iwahori space of seminorms on a finite-dimensional vector space over a non-Archimedean field is a non-Archimedean analogue of a symmetric space. If, in addition, $K$ is real closed, we define a signed analogue of the Goldman-Iwahori space consisting of signed seminorms. This new space can be seen as the linear algebraic version of the real analytification of projective space over $K$. We study this space with methods from real tropical geometry by constructing natural real tropicalization maps from the signed Goldman-Iwahori space to all real tropicalized linear spaces. We prove that this space is the limit of all real tropicalized linear embeddings. We give a combinatorial interpretation of this result by showing that the signed Goldman-Iwahori space is the real tropical linear space associated to the universal realizable oriented matroid. In the constant coefficient case for $K = \mathbb{R}$, we describe this space explicitly and relate it to real Bergman fans.

Abstract:We prove a minimax principle for weakly compact JB$^*$-triples characterizing geometrically the singular values of an element. Among the consequences of this principle we present a Weyl inequality on the perturbation of the singular values and a Cauchy-Poincaré (interlacing) theorem. We also obtain a version of the Ky Fan maximum principle in the setting of weakly compact JB$^*$-triples. We study perturbations of the spectral resolutions showing that small perturbations of an element produces small perturbations of the corresponding spectral resolutions. As a consequence we obtain that weakly compact JB$^*$-triples satisfy the property that perturbations of a convex combination of elements in the closed unit ball coincide with a convex combination of perturbations of the elements also in the closed unit ball. All these results hold true when particularized to weakly compact JB$^*$-algebras.

Abstract:Consider the space parameterising curves of genus g>1 equipped with a quadratic differential with simple zeroes. We use the geometry of isomonodromic deformations to construct a complex hyperkahler structure on the total space of its tangent bundle. This provides non-trivial examples of the Joyce structures recently introduced in relation to Donaldson-Thomas theory.

Abstract:We consider semi-algebraic subsets of the Grassmannian of lines in three-space called tree amplituhedra. These arise in the study of scattering amplitudes from particle physics. Our main result states that tree amplituhedra in ${\rm Gr}(2,4)$ are positive geometries. The numerator of their canonical form plays the role of the adjoint in Wachspress geometry, and is uniquely determined by explicit interpolation conditions.

Abstract:We introduce a new diametral notion for points of the unit sphere of Banach spaces, that naturally complements the notion of Delta-points, but is weaker than the notion of Daugavet points. We prove that this notion can be used to provide a new geometric characterization of the Daugavet property, as well as to recover -- and even to provide new -- results about Daugavet points in various contexts such as absolute sums of Banach spaces or projective tensor products. Finally, we show that this notion leads to powerful new ideas for renorming questions, and that those ideas can be combined with previous constructions from the literature in order to renorm every infinite dimensional Banach space with an unconditional Schauder basis to have a Daugavet point.

Abstract:Affine Bruhat--Tits buildings are geometric spaces extracting the combinatorics of algebraic groups. The building of $\mathrm{PGL}$ parametrizes flags of subspaces/lattices in or, equivalently, norms on a fixed finite-dimensional vector space, up to homothety. It has first been studied by Goldman and Iwahori as a piecewise-linear analogue of symmetric spaces. The space of seminorms compactifies the space of norms and admits a natural surjective restriction map from the Berkovich analytification of projective space that factors the natural tropicalization map. Inspired by Payne's result that the analytification is the limit of all tropicalizations, we show that the space of seminorms is the limit of all tropicalized linear embeddings $\iota\colon\mathbb{P}^r\hookrightarrow\mathbb{P}^n$ and prove a faithful tropicalization result for compactified linear spaces. The space of seminorms is in fact the tropical linear space associated to the universal realizable valuated matroid.
