Abstract:We determine a reasonable upper bound for the complexity of collection from the left to multiply two elements of a finite soluble, or polycyclic, group by restricting attention to certain polycyclic presentations of the group.

Abstract:It is shown by means of a generalization of a result of R. Baer and D. H. McLain that if G is a locally polycyclic group and if the chief factors of every finitely generated subgroup of G have finite rank at most equal to r, then every maximal subgroup of G has index dividing the r th power of some prime. This answers a question about locally supersoluble groups raised by the first author. In addition, examples are furnished to show that neither of the properties "all chief factors are finite" and "all maximal subgroups have finite index" implies the other.

Abstract:Let mu(q2)(n, k)denote the minimum number of multiplications required to compute the coefficients of the product of two degree nk - 1 polynomials modulo the kth power of an irreducible polynomial of degree n over the q(2) element field F-q2. It is shown that for all odd q and all n = 1,2,..., lim inf(k ->infinity) mu(q2)(n, k)/kn <= 2(1 + 1/q - 2). For the proof of this upper bound, we show that for an odd prime power q, all algebraic function fields in the Garcia-Stichtenoth tower F-q2 over have places of all degrees and apply a Chudnovsky like algorithm for multiplication of polynomials modulo a power of an irreducible polynomial.

Abstract:Let G be one of the classical Lie groups GL(n+1)(R), GL(n+1)(C), U(p, q + 1), O(p, q + 1), On+1(C), SO(p, q + 1), SOn+1(C), and let G' be respectively the subgroup GL(n)(R), GL(n)(C), U(p, q), O(p, q), O-n(C), SO(p, q), SO (C), embedded in G in the standard way. We show that every irreducible Casselman-Wallach representation of G' occurs with multiplicity at most one in every irreducible Casselman-Wallach representation of G. Similar results are proved for the Jacobi groups GL(n)(R) (sic) H2n+1(R), GL(n)(C) (sic) H2n+1 (C), U(p, q) (sic) H2p+2q+1(R), Sp(2n)(R) (sic) H2n+1(R), Sp(2n)(C) (sic) H2n+1 (C) with their respective subgroups GL(n)(R), GL(n)(C), U(p, q), Sp(2n)(R), and SP2n(C).

Abstract:Abstract Let G be a finite group with an abelian normal subgroup N . When does N have a unique conjugacy class of complements in G ? We consider this question with a focus on properties of maximal subgroups. As corollaries we obtain Theorems 1.6 and 1.7 which are closely related to a result by Parker and Rowley on supplements of a nilpotent normal subgroup [3, Theorem 1]. Furthermore, we consider families of maximal subgroups of G closed under conjugation whose intersection equals {\Phi(G)} . In particular, we characterize the soluble groups having a unique minimal family with this property (Theorem 2.3, Remark 2.4). In the case when {\Phi(G)=1} , these are exactly the soluble groups in which each abelian normal subgroup has a unique conjugacy class of complements.

Abstract:We know that any finite abelian group $G$ appears as a subgroup of infinitely many multiplicative groups $\mathbb{Z}_n^\times$ (the abelian groups of size $\phi(n)$ that are the multiplicative groups of units in the rings $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$). It seems to be less well appeciated that $G$ appears as a subgroup of almost all multiplicative groups $\mathbb{Z}_n^\times$. We exhibit an asymptotic formula for the counting function of those integers whose multiplicative group fails to contain a copy of $G$, for all finite abelian groups $G$ (other than the trivial one-element group).

Abstract:An old problem in group theory is that of describing how the order of an element behaves under multiplication. To generalize some classical bounds concerning the order $\mathrm o(ab)$ of two elements $a, b$ in a finite abelian group to the non-commutative case, we replace $\mathrm o(ab)$ with a notion of mutual order $\mathrm o(a, b)$, defined as the least positive integer $n$ such that $a^nb^n = 1$. Motivated by this, we then compare $\mathrm o(ab)$ and $\mathrm o(a, b)$ in finite nilpotent groups, and show that in a group of class $\gamma$, the ratio $\mathrm o(ab)/\mathrm o(a, b)$ lies in some fixed finite set $S(\gamma) \subset \mathbb Q$, whose elements do not involve prime factors exceeding $\gamma$. In particular, we generalize a result of P. Hall, which asserts that $\mathrm o(ab) = \mathrm o(a, b)$ in $p$-groups with $p > \gamma$. We end with a more detailed analysis for groups of class 2, which allows one to give a more explicit description of $\mathrm o(ab)/\mathrm o(a, b)$.

The least primary factor of the multiplicative group

Abstract:Let $S(n)$ denote the least primary factor in the primary decomposition of the multiplicative group $M_n = (\Bbb Z/n\Bbb Z)^\times$. We give an asymptotic formula, with order of magnitude $x/(\log x)^{1/2}$, for the counting function of those integers $n$ for which $S(n) \ne 2$. We also give an asymptotic formula, for any prime power $q$, for the counting function of those integers $n$ for which $S(n) = q$. This group-theoretic problem can be reduced to problems of counting integers with restrictions on their prime factors, allowing it to be addressed by classical techniques of analytic number theory.

Abstract:A finite group $$G$$ is said to be a generalized Frobenius group with kernel$$F$$, if $$F$$ is a proper nontrivial normal subgroup of $$G$$ and for every element $$Fx$$ of prime order of the quotient group $$G/F$$ the coset $$Fx$$ of the group $$G$$ over $$F$$ has only $$p$$-elements for some prime $$p$$ depending on $$x$$. This article considers generalized Frobenius groups with insoluble kernel. We prove that a quotient group of a generalized Frobenius group over its insoluble kernel is a 2-group.

Abstract:Given a finite group $G$ of order $n.$ Denote the sum of the inverse-power of element orders in $G$ by $m(G).$ Let $\mathbb{Z}_n$ be the cyclic group of order $n.$ Suppose $G$ is a non-cyclic group of order $n$ then we show that $m(G)\geq \frac{5}{4}m(\mathbb{Z}_n).$ Our result improves the inequality $m(G)>m(\mathbb{Z}_n)$ obtained by Baniasad Azad, M., and Khorsravi B. Moreover, this bound is best as for $n=4l, l$ odd, there exists a group $G$ of order $n$ satisfying $m(G)=\frac{5}{4}m(\mathbb{Z}_n)$. Moreover, we will establish that $\frac{1}{q-1}m(G)< m(\mathbb{Z}_n)\leq \frac{4}{5}m(G),$ where $G$ is a non-cyclic group of odd order.
