Abstract:We obtain sharp bounds for the size of the Schur multiplier of finite groups, which improves all existing bounds. Moreover, we also obtain sharp bounds for the second cohomology group $H^2(G,\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z})$ of a $p$-group with coefficients in $\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}.$

Abstract:Let $\Gamma$ be a countable discrete group. Given any sequence $(f_n)_{n\geq 1}$ of $\ell^p$-normalized functions ($p\in [1,2)$), consider the associated positive definite matrix coefficients $\langle f_n, \rho(\cdot) f_n\rangle$ of the right regular representation $\rho$. We construct an orthogonal decomposition of the corresponding {\it Schur multipliers} on the reduced group $C^*$-algebra or the uniform Roe algebra of $\Gamma$. We identify this decomposition explicitly via the limit points of the orbits $(\widetilde f_n)_{n\geq 1}$ in the group-invariant compactification of the quotient space constructed by Varadhan and the first author in [14]. We apply this result and use positive-definiteness to provide two (quite different) characterizations of amenability of $\Gamma$ -- one via a variational approach and the other using group-invariant percolation on Cayley graphs constructed by Benjamini, Lyons, Peres and Schramm [1]. These results underline, from a new point of view to the best of our knowledge, the manner in which Schur multipliers capture geometric properties of the underlying group $\Gamma$.

On the best constants of Schur multipliers of second order divided difference functions

Abstract:We give a new proof of the boundedness of bilinear Schur multipliers of second order divided difference functions, as obtained earlier by Potapov, Skripka and Sukochev in their proof of Koplienko's conjecture on the existence of higher order spectral shift functions. Our proof is based on recent methods involving bilinear transference and the Hörmander-Mikhlin-Schur multiplier theorem. Our approach provides a significant sharpening of the known asymptotic bounds of bilinear Schur multipliers of second order divided difference functions. Furthermore, we give a new lower bound of these bilinear Schur multipliers, giving again a fundamental improvement on the best known bounds obtained by Coine, Le Merdy, Potapov, Sukochev and Tomskova.

Abstract:We describe an algorithm for computing successive quotients of the Schur multiplier $M(G)$ for a group $G$ given by an invariant finite $L$-presentation. Abstract:Let $G$ be the semidirect product $N \rtimes \mathbb{R}$, where $N$ is a stratified Lie group and $\mathbb{R}$ acts on $N$ via automorphic dilations. Homogeneous left-invariant sub-Laplacians on $N$ and $\mathbb{R}$ can be lifted to $G$, and their sum $\Delta$ is a left-invariant sub-Laplacian on $G$. In previous joint work of Ottazzi, Vallarino and the first-named author, a spectral multiplier theorem of Mihlin--Hörmander type was proved for $\Delta$, showing that an operator of the form $F(\Delta)$ is of weak type $(1,1)$ and bounded on $L^p(G)$ for all $p \in (1,\infty)$ provided $F$ satisfies a scale-invariant smoothness condition of order $s > (Q+1)/2$, where $Q$ is the homogeneous dimension of $N$. Here we show that, if $N$ is a group of Heisenberg type, or more generally a direct product of Métivier and abelian groups, then the smoothness condition can be pushed down to the sharp threshold $s>(d+1)/2$, where $d$ is the topological dimension of $N$. The proof is based on lifting to $G$ weighted Plancherel estimates on $N$ and exploits a relation between the functional calculi for $\Delta$ and analogous operators on semidirect extensions of Bessel--Kingman hypergroups.

Improved multiplier theorems on rank one noncompact symmetric spaces

Abstract:We prove multiplier theorems on rank one noncompact symmetric spaces which improve aspects of existing results. A common theme of our main results is that we partially drop specific assumptions on the multiplier function such as a Mikhlin-Hörmander condition. These are replaced by a requirement that parts of the multiplier function on the critical $p$ strip give rise to bounded Fourier multipliers.

Abstract:We obtain lower bounds for the dimension of fixed loci of abelian $p$-groups acting on smooth projective varieties. Those arise from modulo p Chern numbers, and are shown to be optimal. The bounds are expressed in a natural way by introducing an appropriate filtration on the modulo $p$ cobordism ring. They are obtained using equivariant localization methods, via the concentration theorem, and by a technique of "partition dividing".

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the multiplicative structure of a shifted multiplicative subgroup and its connections with additive combinatorics and the theory of Diophantine equations. Among many new results, we highlight our main contributions as follows. First, we show that if a nontrivial shift of a multiplicative subgroup $G$ contains a product set $AB$, then $|A||B|$ is essentially bounded by $|G|$, refining a well-known consequence of a classical result by Vinogradov. Second, we provide a sharper upper bound of $M_k(n)$, the largest size of a set such that each pairwise product of its elements is $n$ less than a $k$-th power, refining the recent result of Dixit, Kim, and Murty. One main ingredient in our proof is the first non-trivial upper bound on the maximum size of a generalized Diophantine tuple over a finite field. In addition, we determine the maximum size of an infinite family of generalized Diophantine tuples over finite fields with square order, which is of independent interest. We also make significant progress towards a conjecture of Sárközy on the multiplicative decompositions of shifted multiplicative subgroups. In particular, we prove that for almost all primes $p$, the set $\{x^2-1: x \in \mathbb{F}_p^*\} \setminus \{0\}$ cannot be decomposed as the product of two sets in $\mathbb{F}_p$ non-trivially.

Abstract:We obtain new bounds, pointwisely and on average, for Dedekind sums $\mathsf{s}(\lambda,p)$ modulo a prime $p$ with $\lambda$ of small multiplicative order $d$ modulo $p$. Assuming the infinitude of Mersenne primes, the range of our results is optimal. Moreover, we relate high moments of $L(1,\chi)$ over subgroups of characters to some correlations of Dedekind sums and use our recent results to study these correlations.

Abstract:In 2003, Héthelyi and Külshammer proposed that if $G$ is a finite group and $p$ is a prime dividing the group order, then $k(G)\geq 2\sqrt{p-1}$, and they proved this conjecture for solvable $G$ and showed that it is sharp for those primes $p$ for which $\sqrt{p-1}$ is an integer. This initiated a flurry of activity, leading to many generalizations and variations of the result; in particular, today the conjecture is known to be true for all finite groups. In this note, we put forward a natural new and stronger conjecture, which is sharp for all primes $p$, and we prove it for solvable groups, and when $p$ is large, also for arbitrary groups.

Restricted sumsets in multiplicative subgroups

Abstract:We establish the restricted sumset analogue of the celebrated conjecture of Sárközy on additive decompositions of the set of nonzero squares over a finite field. More precisely, we show that if $q>13$ is an odd prime power, then the set of nonzero squares in $\mathbb{F}_q$ cannot be written as a restricted sumset $A \hat{+} A$, extending a result of Shkredov. More generally, we study restricted sumsets in multiplicative subgroups over finite fields as well as restricted sumsets in perfect powers (over integers) motivated by a question of Erdős and Moser. We also prove an analogue of van Lint-MacWilliams' conjecture for restricted sumsets, which appears to be the first analogue of Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem in a family of Cayley sum graphs.

Abstract:In this note we describe the role of the Schur multiplier in the structure of the $p$-torsion of discrete groups. More concretely, we show how the knowledge of $H_2G$ allows to approximate many groups by colimits of copies of finite $p$-groups. Our examples include interesting families of non-commutative infinite groups, including Burnside groups, certain solvable examples and the first Grigorchuk group. We also provide a counterexample for a conjecture of E. Farjoun.

The local geometry of idempotent Schur multipliers

Abstract:A Schur multiplier is a linear map on matrices which acts on its entries by multiplication with some function, called the symbol. We consider idempotent Schur multipliers, whose symbols are indicator functions of smooth Euclidean domains. Given $1<p\neq 2<\infty$, we provide a local characterization (under some mild transversality condition) for the boundedness on Schatten $p$-classes of Schur idempotents in terms of a lax notion of boundary flatness. We prove in particular that all Schur idempotents are modeled on a single fundamental example: the triangular projection. As an application, we fully characterize the local $L_p$-boundedness of smooth Fourier idempotents on connected Lie groups. They are all modeled on one of three fundamental examples: the classical Hilbert transform, and two new examples of Hilbert transforms that we call affine and projective. Our results in this paper are vast noncommutative generalizations of Fefferman's celebrated ball multiplier theorem. They confirm the intuition that Schur multipliers share profound similarities with Euclidean Fourier multipliers |even in the lack of a Fourier transform connection| and complete, for Lie groups, a longstanding search of Fourier $L_p$-idempotents.

On $p$-groups with a maximal elementary abelian normal subgroup of rank $k$

Abstract:There are several results in the literature concerning $p$-groups $G$ with a maximal elementary abelian normal subgroup of rank $k$ due to Thompson, Mann and others. Following an idea of Sambale we obtain bounds for the number of generators etc. of a $2$-group $G$ in terms of $k$, which were previously known only for $p>2$. We also prove a theorem that is new even for odd primes. Namely, we show that if $G$ has a maximal elementary abelian normal subgroup of rank $k$, then for any abelian subgroup $A$ the Frattini subgroup $\Phi(A)$ can be generated by $2k$ elements ($3k$ when $p=2$). The proof of this rests upon the following result of independent interest: If $V$ is an $n$-dimensional vector space, then any commutative subalgebra of End$(V)$ contains a zero algebra of codimension at most $n$.
