Abstract:Given a permutation group $G$ on a finite set $\Omega$, let $G^{(k)}$ denote the $k$-closure of $G$, that is, the largest permutation group on $\Omega$ having the same orbits in the induced action on $\Omega^k$ as $G$. Recall that a group is $\mathrm{Alt}(d)$-free if it does not contain a section isomorphic to the alternating group of degree $d$. Motivated by some problems in computational group theory, we prove that the $k$-closure of an $\mathrm{Alt}(d)$-free group is again $\mathrm{Alt}(d)$-free for $k \geq 4$ and $d \geq 25$.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite additive abelian group with exponent $n>1$, and let $a_1,\ldots,a_{n-1}\in G$. We show that there is a permutation $\sigma\in S_{n-1}$ such that all the elements $sa_{\sigma(s)}\ (s=1,\ldots,n-1)$ are nonzero if and only if $$\left|\left\{1\le s<n:\ \frac{n}{d}a_s\ne 0\right\}\right|\ge d-1\ \ \textrm{ for every positive divisor }\ d\ \textrm{ of }\ n.$$ When $G$ is the cyclic group $\mathbb Z/n\mathbb Z$, this confirms a conjecture of Z.-W. Sun.

Abstract:We investigate the complexity of computing the Zariski closure of a finitely generated group of matrices. The Zariski closure was previously shown to be computable by Derksen, Jeandel, and Koiran, but the termination argument for their algorithm appears not to yield any complexity bound. In this paper we follow a different approach and obtain a bound on the degree of the polynomials that define the closure. Our bound shows that the closure can be computed in elementary time. We also obtain upper bounds on the length of chains of linear algebraic groups, where all the groups are generated over a fixed number field.

Abstract:We classify the possible types of minimal operations above an arbitrary permutation group. Above the trivial group, a theorem of Rosenberg yields that there are five types of minimal operations. We show that above any non-trivial permutation group there are at most four such types. Indeed, except above Boolean groups acting freely on a set, there are only three. In particular, this is the case for oligomorphic permutation groups, for which we improve a result of Bodirsky and Chen by showing one of the types in their classification does not exist. Building on these results, we answer three questions of Bodirsky that were previously open.

Abstract:We present a framework for constructing congruence closure modulo permutation equations, which extends the abstract congruence closure framework for handling permutation function symbols. Our framework also handles certain interpreted function symbols satisfying each of the following properties: idempotency (I), nilpotency (N), unit (U), I U U, or N U U. Moreover, it yields convergent rewrite systems corresponding to ground equations containing permutation function symbols. We show that congruence closure modulo a given finite set of permutation equations can be constructed in polynomial time using equational inference rules, allowing us to provide a polynomial time decision procedure for the word problem for a finite set of ground equations with a fixed set of permutation function symbols.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a nontrivial finite permutation group of degree $n$. If $G$ is transitive, then a theorem of Jordan states that $G$ has a derangement. Equivalently, a finite group is never the union of conjugates of a proper subgroup. If $G$ is intransitive, then $G$ may fail to have a derangement, and this can happen even if $G$ has only two orbits, both of which have size $(1/2+o(1))n$. However, we conjecture that if $G$ has two orbits of size exactly $n/2$ then $G$ does have a derangement, and we prove this conjecture when $G$ acts primitively on at least one of the orbits. Equivalently, we conjecture that a finite group is never the union of conjugates of two proper subgroups of the same order, and we prove this conjecture when at least one of the subgroups is maximal. The same conjecture was implicitly made by Feldman. We prove other cases of the conjecture, and we highlight connections our results have with intersecting families of permutations and roots of polynomials modulo primes. Along the way, we also prove a linear variant on Isbell's conjecture regarding derangements of prime-power order.

Abstract:Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be the finite field with $q$ elements and consider the $n$-dimensional $\mathbb{F}_q$-vector space $V=\mathbb{F}_q^n\,$. In this paper we define a closure operator on the subgroup lattice of the group $G = \mathrm{PGL}(V)$. Let $\mu$ denote the Möbius function of this lattice. The aim is to use this closure operator to characterize subgroups $H$ of $G$ for which $\mu(H,G)\neq 0$. Moreover, we establish a polynomial bound on the number $c(m)$ of closed subgroups $H$ of index $m$ in $G$ for which the lattice of $H$-invariant subspaces of $V$ is isomorphic to a product of chains. This bound depends only on $m$ and not on the choice of $n$ and $q$. It is achieved by considering a similar closure operator for the subgroup lattice of $\mathrm{GL}(V)$ and the same results proven for this group.

Abstract:We show that the word problem for any 3-manifold group is solvable in time $O(n\log^3 n)$. Our main contribution is the proof that the word problem for admissible graphs of groups, in the sense of Croke and Kleiner, is solvable in $O(n\log n)$; this covers fundamental groups of non-geometric graph manifolds. Similar methods also give that the word problem for free products can be solved "almost as quickly" as the word problem in the factors.

Abstract:We prove that an element of the symmetric group of degree n>3 can be represented as the commutator of two permutations whose supports intersect at exactly p≤n points if and only if it is the product of p cycles of length 3. As an accompanying result, and also as a step of the main result's proof, we give a lower bound for p to express an even permutation as the product of p cycles of length 3, in terms of its decomposition into disjoint cycles.

Abstract:Let $\alpha(n)$ denote the number of perfect square permutations in the symmetric group $S_n$. The conjecture $\alpha(2n+1) = (2n+1) \alpha(2n)$, provided by Stanley[4], was proved by Blum[1] using a generating function. This paper presents a combinatorial proof for this conjecture. Abstract:In this paper, we exclusively utilize CNOT gates for implementing permutation groups generated by more than two elements. In Lemma 1, we recall that three CNOT gates are both necessary and sufficient to execute a two-qubit swap gate operation. Subsequently, in Lemma 2, we show that the maximum number of CNOT gates needed to carry out an n-qubit substitution operation is 3(n-1). Moving forward, our analysis in Section 3 reveals that utilizing five or fewer CNOT gates is insufficient for implementing a three-qubit swap gate corresponding to the permutation element (123). Hence six CNOT gates are both necessary and sufficient for implementing (123). This is done by employing a graph-theoretic approach to rigorously validate the results in terms of at most five CNOT gates. Using computational tools, we exhaustively explore all valid circuit diagrams containing exactly six CNOT gates to successfully execute the swap gate for (123), by explaining the equivalence classes in Remark 6 and Table 2. We conclude them in Theorem <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://7.To" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> extend our analysis to the multiqubit scenario, we present the reducible and irreducible permutation elements in Definition 8. We clarify the equivalence between rows in the multi-qubit space and provide an approximate upper bound for multi-qubits to perform the aforementioned operations in Theorem 9. The comprehensive exploration of this paper aims to pave the way for further advancements in understanding quantum circuit optimization via multiple use of a specific two-qubit gate.
