Abstract:Structural health monitoring (SHM) has been extensively used in civil infrastructures to assess structural condition and situation. Here, we develop a novel type of mechanical sensing technique using the structural instability of cylindrical cells detected by fiber Bragg grating (FBG). The cylinders are fabricated using a 3D printing technique, which are coiled by the FBG wires to detect the transverse deformation. Structural instability under axial compression is obtained in the experiments and the force-displacement relations are validated by the numerical simulations with satisfactory agreements. The wavelength variation of the FBG, caused by the structural instability, is observed and compared with the predefined threshold. Defining the variation larger than the threshold as "1" and smaller as "0", the pattern recognition algorithm is used to convert the FBG results into binary data, which can, therefore, be analyzed to indicate the structural conditions. In the end, we envision the potential applications of the reported sensing technique, such as wireless sensors for structural health monitoring (SHM) in civil infrastructures.
Monitoring of Lateral Displacements of a Slope Using a Series of Special Fibre Bragg Grating-Based In-Place Inclinometers

Abstract:Traditional in-place inclinometers are widely used for monitoring displacements inside a slope. However, these traditional inclinometers have several disadvantages such as electromagnetic interference, signal loss for long distance transmission, gravity dependence and poor durability. Scholars have proposed fibre Bragg grating (FBG)-based in-place inclinometers which can overcome these limitations. However, all such in-place inclinometers are based on the relative displacement between two tips of the rigid segment, but the deformation of the segment is not considered in the calculation, which is not consistent with the actual condition. The error of measurement is due to linear superposition. According to classical indeterminate beam theory, the authors developed a new type of FBG-based in-place inclinometers where the deformation of the segment is coordinated with the casings installed in boreholes. This type of FBG-based in-place inclinometer has been fabricated and calibrated in the laboratory. The measured displacement data are in good agreement with theoretical results obtained using equations derived by the authors based on classical beam theory. After the laboratory calibration, a series of FBG-based in-place inclinometers have been installed in one vertical borehole in a slope in China. Monitoring data of all FBG wavelengths have been collected in rainy and dry seasons, and have been analysed in this paper. It has been found that the slope moves quickly in the rainy season and remains stable in the dry season.
In-situ Monitoring of Displacements and Stability Evaluation of Slope Based on Fiber Bragg Grating Sensing Technology

Abstract:A new type of in-place inclinometer based on fiber Bragg grating(FBG) sensing technology and the related analysis method are presented.Based on the linear relationship between the wavelength change of FBG and strain,the strains at different measuring points on the new in-place inclinometers are obtained.Using the classical beam bending equation and finite difference method,the displacements of the inclinometer can be calculated.This new type of in-place inclinometer overcomes certain disadvantages of the conventional in-place inclinometer,such as low accuracy,poor durability,and complex operation.Laboratory calibration results verify the reliability of the new in-place inclinometer and its analysis method.For a cut slope along the Panzhihua—Tianfangcun highway,three new FBG in-place inclinometers were placed in three vertical boreholes in the same cross-section of the slope,ensuring that the inclinometers passed through the potential slip surface.Then the field monitoring started.Monitoring data derived from the inclinometers are collected and analyzed.An optimal model is adopted to calculate the position of the potential slip surface and the factor of safety of the slope,which is well compared with the results obtained from Bishop's method.It is shown that the method presented provides a new and reliable approach for assessment of slope stability based on slope monitoring data.

Abstract:Traditional in-place inclinometers are widely used for displacement monitoring of slopes and other geo-structures. But these inclinometers have limitations such as (a) numerous cables requirement, (b) sensitivity to electromagnetic interference, (c) narrow measuring range. The new optical fiber sensor based in-place inclinometer can overcome the above limitations. This paper introduces a new type of in-place inclinometer based on fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensing technique. A series of FBG sensors are glued onto the surface of a plastic rod for measuring bending strains and axial strains. Based on the beam theory, these strain results are used to calculate the displacement and rotation angle of the rod tip. A series of rods with FBG sensors can be connected together and installed into a geotechnical structure for displacement monitoring. Several calibration tests have been conducted in laboratory and the calibration results are in good agreement with theoretical results. The new FBG-based in-place inclinometers have been applied in a subway tunnel in Shenzhen, China, and a slope site in Sichuan, China. This technology will be used to monitor a retaining wall in Hong Kong.

Abstract:We get the binary Taylor expansions of the effective refractive index and period of fiber Bragg grating (FBG), verify theoretically that the temperature-strain and strain-temperature cross sensitivities are the same, and make a conclusion that the thermo-optical coefficient and the elasto-optical coefficient are both proportional to the square of the effective refractive index. The calculation equations of temperature and strain are listed, and the method of calculation is expatiated. The wavelengths of FBG under different temperatures and strains are measured, and the cross sensitivity coefficients of temperature-strain and strain-temperature are -1.4743x10(-6) nm/(degrees C.mu epsilon) and -1.3948x10(-6) nm/(mu epsilon.degrees C). We place the FBG hydrostatic leveling instrument on the open-air balcony for one day, monitor the wavelength changes of FBG, and then calculate and get a more accurate solution to the changes of liquid depth in the hydrostatic level instrument. The experimental results show that using the calculation equations of temperature and strain can improve the measurement accuracy of FBG.

Abstract:Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) biaxial tilt sensors used to use two optical fibers and four FBGs to measure inclination in two perpendicular directions, whereas here we have demonstrated one using one optical fiber and two FBGs. The inclination along the direction of the fiber (axial direction) can be distinguished by the difference of the resonant wavelengths of the two FBGs, and the inclination in the transverse direction distinguished by the average of the resonant wavelengths of the two FBG. In the experiments, from −50° to 50° in the axial direction, the difference changed linearly with inclination, R2=0.998, and the sensitivity was 1.1pm/°; from 20° to 70° in the transverse direction, the average changed linearly with inclination, R2=0.902, and the sensitivity was 4.5pm/°. The mass of the inertial object was 5.3g. The detailed theoretical and experimental results are in the supplementary material.

Abstract:A Refractive index sensor based on tilted fiber Bragg grating and stimulated Brillouin scattering is proposed and demonstrated. The cladding modes of the tilted fiber Bragg grating is sensitive to the surrounding refractive index and the approach relies on refractive index dependent resonance wavelength shift of the modes. Stimulated Brillouin scattering is introduced to measure the wavelength shift due to its narrow bandwidth, which enhances the wavelength resolution to 0.25 pm and provides much higher refractive index sensitivity than traditional wavelength readout methods. This kind sensor is suitable to sense a very small variation of refractive index and the sensitivities can reach to a resolution of 1.27 × 10(-4) RIU with the refractive index ranging from 1.3405 to 1.4025 and a resolution of 2.49 × 10(-5) RIU ranging from 1.4025 to 1.4219, respectively.

Abstract:This paper presents a self-designed in-place inclinometer based on fiber Bragg grating (FBG) technology and introduces its application to a landslide monitoring project in Wenzhou, China. The working principle of the FBG-based inclinometer is briefly introduced. The FBG-based inclinometers were installed into nine boreholes that were distributed over different areas of the landslide. After 4 months of monitoring, the deformation of the soil mass at different depths above the bedrock within the landslide was captured by the inclinometers. The results indicated that the soil deformation above the bedrock was relatively large whereas that below the bedrock was minor. Based on the field monitoring data, the potential sliding zones were predicted to be the areas near the bedrock. In addition, a limit equilibrium analysis was carried out to evaluate the stability of the landslide under the circumstance of rainfall. The analyses showed that the calculated failure surface was consistent with the field observations, indicating that the monitoring data recorded by FBGs were accurate. These findings demonstrate that a combination of FBG technique and limit equilibrium analysis can be used to evaluate the stability of landslides effectively.

Abstract:We demonstrate fabrication of tilted fiber Bragg gratings (TFBGs) with dif-ferent tilt angles for the measurement of surrounding refractive index (SRI). High or-der cladding modes has been found to disappear gradually, with their resonance wave-length linearly increasing as SRI increases. The measured index sensitivity is higher than 500 nm/RIU.By optimizing the tilt angle of the grating,the proposed optical fiber sensor can be used for SRI measurements in different index range.

Abstract:In this paper, a coated cladding-reduced superimposed long period fiber grating and fiber Bragg grating structure (SLBG) is proposed, which could measure three parameters, strain, temperature and surrounding refractive index (SRI), simultaneously. Firstly, the mode-coupling behaviors in the structure is determined according to the phase matching conditions, and thus the coupled-mode equations of the structure is given by coupled-mode theory. Then, the simulated transmission spectrum shows three attenuation peaks generated by the coupling between forward core mode with forward cladding modes, the backward core mode and backward cladding modes respectively. To make demodulation more convenient and accurate, the structure is optimized. The signal-to-noise ratio is improved by reducing the attenuation peak amplitude based on the corroded cladding, and the sensitivity is enhanced based on mode barrier effect caused by high refractive index film. After the optimization, the simulation results of the response of the three transmission peaks to three parameters show good performance in both sensitivity and linearity (all larger than 0.999). The maximum sensitivities of three transmission peaks to strain, temperature, and SRI are 3.15 pm/με, 817.6 pm/°C, and − 3472 nm/RIU, respectively. Finally, the condition number of the parametric demodulation matrix is 6.0046, indicating the inversion of the resonant wavelength offset has high precision. This paper provides reliable theoretical guidance for the design of superimposed fiber grating structure, and the proposed structure can be applied to submarine communication optical fiber monitoring.

Abstract:Optical fiber inclinometer technology has been gradually used in various projects. However, the error analysis of this method is decisive for its subsequent development and application. In this study, through three tests, the monitoring length, layout plane, and boundary conditions that may lead to measurement errors are studied in detail and the contribution of different factors to measurement errors is explored. The research results reveal that the measurement errors caused by monitoring length and layout plane have an empirical function relationship with the monitoring length x and the angle θ between the layout plane and the inclined direction. Any changes in the boundary conditions will result in an overall deviation in the calculated deflection curve. After analyzing the characteristics of each error, a comprehensive error equation is proposed. This equation has guiding significance for error correction and technical improvement in optical fiber inclinometer.

Abstract:Real-time monitoring of slopes, tunnels, and dams is important for ensuring the long-term stability and reliability of such structures. Despite the successes of current technologies in many applications, a gap still exists in certain areas such as precision in steep slopes and complex soil conditions. This study has designed a flexible inclinometer based on an array of Micro Electromechanical System (MEMS) sensors to enhance the accuracy and flexibility of existing monitoring techniques. The inclination angle of each flexible inclinometer measurement unit was measured to monitor the horizontal or vertical displacement of the target structural body. We used the Levenberg–Marquardt (LM) algorithm for optimizing the MEMS sensors based calibration and designed multiple experiments to test the accuracy of the proposed method. Experimental results show that the calibrated flexible inclinometer measurement unit has an inclination angle of less than 0.04° and the accuracy of the flexible inclinometer lies within ±0.4 mm in the horizontal attitude and 1.6 mm in the vertical attitude. Our research has developed a novel tool for geotechnical engineering monitoring that can aid in increasing the precision of real-time assessment and prediction of structural stability.

Abstract:A directionally discriminable curvature sensor based on a chirped fiber Bragg grating Fabry–Perot interferometer (CFBG-FPI) is proposed and demonstrated by staggering two CFBGs in parallel in the fiber core with femtosecond laser point-by-point technology. The experimental results show that the light intensity of the interference dip tends to become stronger and weaker in two opposite bending directions, respectively, with a maximum sensitivity of 4.93 dB/m−1. This sensor has a temperature sensitivity of 2.31 × 10−4 dB/°C resulting in a cross-sensitivity as low as approximately 4.7 × 10−5 m−1/°C. The sensor is simple to manufacture, compact, and can be cascaded by multiple sensors to achieve multi-point detection, which is expected to play an important application in structural health detection.

Abstract:Fiber bragg grating has the advantages of simple structure, light weight, small volume, low energy consumption, high sensitivity and measurement accuracy, and is widely used in the field of structural health monitoring. the structure and basic principle of fiber bragg grating sensor are introduced. the change of temperature, stress and other parameters will lead to the change of reflection center wavelength. The strain and temperature sensitivity coefficients of Fiber Bragg Grating sensors with different wavelengths are obtained. The fiber Bragg grating strain sensor is developed, and the calibration experiment of the sensor is carried out. The loading equipment is the loading tester. The linearity of the Fiber Bragg Grating sensor is good, and it has a good prospect of engineering civil application.

Abstract:To overcome the shortcomings of conventional slope monitoring methods, this paper presented an in-place inclinometer based on BOTDR (Brillouin Optical Time Domain Reflectometer) which was used to obtain the long-term internal deformation in the slope. The installation process of optical fiber sensors and its measuring principle were introduced. The result of analysis indicated that the error in the measured displacement was proportional to the square of the inclinometer length and the precision of the BOTDR instrument, while it was inversely proportional to the diameter of the inclinometer tube. An actual field slope deformation monitoring case was also introduced. The results show that the BOTDR based inclinometer has a good consistency with the traditional inclinometer. It can effectively access the internal deformation of the slope and help to find the position of potential sliding surface accurately. This technology shows a high reliability and practicality in engineering application that will promote deeper research of slope in the future.
