Abstract:This is my PhD thesis which was defended in May 2021. We call an induced cycle of length at least four a hole. The parity of a hole is the parity of its length. Forbidding holes of certain types in a graph has deep structural implications. In 2006, Chudnovksy, Seymour, Robertson, and Thomas famously proved that a graph is perfect if and only if it does not contain an odd hole or a complement of an odd hole. In 2002, Conforti, Cornuéjols, Kapoor and Vuškovíc provided a structural description of the class of even-hole-free graphs. In Chapter 3, we provide a structural description of all graphs that contain only holes of length $\ell$ for every $\ell \geq 7$. Analysis of how holes interact with graph structure has yielded detection algorithms for holes of various lengths and parities. In 1991, Bienstock showed it is NP-Hard to test whether a graph G has an even (or odd) hole containing a specified vertex $v \in V(G)$. In 2002, Conforti, Cornuéjols, Kapoor and Vuškovíc gave a polynomial-time algorithm to recognize even-hole-free graphs using their structure theorem. In 2003, Chudnovsky, Kawarabayashi and Seymour provided a simpler and slightly faster algorithm to test whether a graph contains an even hole. In 2019, Chudnovsky, Scott, Seymour and Spirkl provided a polynomial-time algorithm to test whether a graph contains an odd hole. Later that year, Chudnovsky, Scott and Seymour strengthened this result by providing a polynomial-time algorithm to test whether a graph contains an odd hole of length at least $\ell$ for any fixed integer $\ell \geq 5$. In Chapter 2, we provide a polynomial-time algorithm to test whether a graph contains an even hole of length at least $\ell$ for any fixed integer $\ell \geq 4$.

Abstract:Truemper configurations are four types of graphs (namely thetas, wheels, prisms and pyramids) that play an important role in the proof of several decomposition theorems for hereditary graph classes. In this paper, we prove two structure theorems: one for graphs with no thetas, wheels and prisms as induced subgraphs, and one for graphs with no thetas, wheels and pyramids as induced subgraphs. A consequence is a polynomial time recognition algorithms for these two classes. In Part II of this series we generalize these results to graphs with no thetas and wheels as induced subgraphs, and in Parts III and IV, using the obtained structure, we solve several optimization problems for these graphs.

Abstract:A well-established research line in structural and algorithmic graph theory is characterizing graph classes by listing their minimal obstructions. When this list is finite for some class $\mathcal C$ we obtain a polynomial-time algorithm for recognizing graphs in $\mathcal C$, and from a logic point of view, having finitely many obstructions corresponds to being definable by a universal sentence. However, in many cases we study classes with infinite sets of minimal obstructions, and this might have neither algorithmic nor logic implications for such a class. Some decades ago, Skrien (1982) and Damaschke (1990) introduced finite expressions of graph classes by means of forbidden orientations and forbidden linear orderings, and recently, similar research lines appeared in the literature, such as expressions by forbidden circular orders, by forbidden tree-layouts, and by forbidden edge-coloured graphs. In this paper, we introduce local expressions of graph classes; a general framework for characterizing graph classes by forbidden equipped graphs. In particular, it encompasses all research lines mentioned above, and we provide some new examples of such characterizations. Moreover, we see that every local expression of a class $\mathcal C$ yields a polynomial-time certification algorithm for graphs in $\mathcal C$. Finally, from a logic point of view, we show that being locally expressible corresponds to being definable in the logic SNP introduced by Feder and Vardi (1999).

Abstract:This is a graduate-level introduction to graph theory, corresponding to a quarter-long course. It covers simple graphs, multigraphs as well as their directed analogues, and more restrictive classes such as tournaments, trees and arborescences. Among the features discussed are Eulerian circuits, Hamiltonian cycles, spanning trees, the matrix-tree and BEST theorems, proper colorings, Turan's theorem, bipartite matching and the Menger and Gallai--Milgram theorems. The basics of network flows are introduced in order to prove Hall's marriage theorem. Around a hundred exercises are included (without solutions).

The nilpotent/commuting/solvable conjugacy class graph is a simple graph with non-central conjugacy classes of G as its vertex set and two vertices are adjacent if and only if a member of one conjugacy class with a member of another conjugacy class generates a nilpotent/abelian/solvable (sub)group. In this paper we have discussed about the forbidden subgraphs of nilpotent, commuting and solvable conjugacy class graphs of groups.

Abstract:This is the Habilitation Thesis manuscript presented at Besançon on January 5, focusing on Matrix Analysis, Matrix Inequalities and Matrix Decompositions. There are also some topics in (Hilbert space) Operator Theory. The text should be of interest for a large audience of researchers and students in pure and applied mathematics. We may divide it into five parts: 1) Chapter 1 is an introductory chapter, some results from the period 1999-2010 are given, and a few conjectures are proposed. 2) Chapters 2-4 deal with matrix inequalities, Chapter 2 is concerned with norm inequalities and logmajorization and Chapters 3-4 with functional calculus and a unitary orbit technique that I started to develop in 2003. 3) Chapter 5 is a time-break in infinite dimensional Hilbert space operators, the essential numerical range plays a key role. 4) Chapters 6-8 establish several decompositions for partitioned matrices, especially for positive block matrices. Some norm inequalities involving the numerical range are derived. 5) Chapter 9 may be of special interest for students : a proof of the Spectral Theorem for bounded operators is derived from the matrix case.

Abstract:This document is a thesis presented for the ``Habilitation à diriger des recherches''. The first chapter provides some background and sketch the story of the classical Schur-Weyl duality and its quantum analogue involving the Hecke algebra. Quantum groups and their centralisers are discussed along with their connections with the braid group, the Yang-Baxter equation and the construction of link invariants. A quick review of several related notions of Hecke algebras concludes the first chapter. The second chapter presents the fused Hecke algebras and an application to the construction of solutions for the Yang-Baxter equation. The third chapter summarises recent works on diagonal centralisers of Lie algebras, and gives an application to the study of the missing label for sl(3). The last chapter discusses algebraic results on the Yokonuma-Hecke algebras and their applications to the study of link invariants.

Abstract:This note presents several results in graph theory inspired by the author's work in the proof theory of linear logic; these results are purely combinatorial and do not involve logic. We show that trails avoiding forbidden transitions, properly arc-colored directed trails and rainbow paths for complete multipartite color classes can be found in linear time, whereas finding rainbow paths is NP-complete for any other restriction on color classes. For the tractable cases, we also state new structural properties equivalent to Kotzig's theorem on the existence of bridges in unique perfect matchings. Another result on graphs equipped with unique perfect matchings that we prove here is the combinatorial counterpart of a theorem due to Bellin in linear logic: a connection between blossoms and bridge deletion orders.

Abstract:We revisit a concept that has been central in some early stages of computer science, that of structured programming: a set of rules that an algorithm must follow in order to acquire a structure that is desirable in many aspects. While much has been written about structured programming, an important issue has been left unanswered: given an arbitrary, compiled program, describe an algorithm to decide whether or not it is structured, that is, whether it conforms to the stated principles of structured programming. We refer to the classical concept of structured programming, as described by Dijkstra. By employing a graph model and graph-theoretic techniques, we formulate an efficient algorithm for answering this question. To do so, we first introduce the class of graphs which correspond to structured programs, which we call Dijkstra Graphs. Our problem then becomes the recognition of such graphs, for which we present a greedy $O(n)$-time algorithm. Furthermore, we describe an isomorphism algorithm for Dijkstra graphs, whose complexity is also linear in the number of vertices of the graph. Both the recognition and isomorphism algorithms have potential important applications, such as in code similarity analysis.

Abstract:Given a graph $G$, we say that an orientation $D$ of $G$ is a KT orientation if, for all $u, v \in V(D)$, there is at most one directed path (in any direction) between $u$ and $v$. Graphs that admit such orientations have been used by Kierstead and Trotter (1992), Carbonero, Hompe, Moore, and Spirkl (2023), Briański, Davies, and Walczak (2024), and Girão, Illingworth, Powierski, Savery, Scott, Tamitegami, and Tan (2024) to construct graphs with large chromatic number and small clique number that served as counterexamples to various conjectures. Motivated by this, we consider which graphs admit KT orientations (named after Kierstead and Trotter). In particular, we construct a graph family with small independence number (sublinear in the number of vertices) which admits a KT orientation. We show that the problem of determining whether a given graph admits a KT orientation is NP-complete, even if we restrict ourselves to planar graphs. Finally, we provide an algorithm to decide if a graph with maximum degree at most 3 admits a KT orientation, whereas, for graphs with maximum degree 4, the problem remains NP-complete.

Stratified Whitehead's theorem and knot invariants

Abstract:By considering homotopies that preserve the stratification, one obtains a natural notion of homotopy for stratified spaces. In this short note, we introduce invariants of stratified homotopy, the stratified homotopy groups. We show that they satisify a stratified version of Whitehead's theorem. As an example, we introduce a complete knot invariant defined via the stratified homotopy groups ----- En considérant des homotopies préservant la stratification, on obtient une notion naturelle d'homotopie pour les espaces stratifiés. Dans cette note, on présente des invariants d'homotopie stratifiée, les groupes d'homotopie stratifiés. On montre que ces groupes d'homotopie stratifiés vérifient un analogue stratifié au théorème de Whitehead. Comme illustration, on présente un invariant de noeud complet défini à partir des groupes d'homotopie stratifiés.

Understanding the Complexity of Induced Subgraph Isomorphisms

Abstract:We study left-hand side restrictions of the induced subgraph isomorphism problem: Fixing a class , for given graphs G and arbitrary H we ask for induced subgraphs of H isomorphic to G.For the homomorphism problem this kind of restriction has been studied by Grohe and Dalmau, Kolaitis and Vardi for the decision problem and by Dalmau and Jonsson for its counting variant.We give a dichotomy result for both variants of the induced subgraph isomorphism problem. Under some assumption from parameterized complexity theory, these problems are solvable in polynomial time if and only if contains no arbitrarily large graphs.All classifications are given by means of parameterized complexity. The results are presented for arbitrary structures of bounded arity which implies, for example, analogous results for directed graphs.Furthermore, we show that no such dichotomy is possible in the sense of classical complexity. That is, if there are classes such that the induced subgraph isomorphism problem on is neither in nor -complete. This argument may be of independent interest, because it is applicable to various parameterized problems.
