Abstract:The enhanced power graph of a group is the simple graph whose vertex set is consisted of all elements of the group, and whose any pair of vertices are adjacent if they generate a cyclic subgroup. In this paper, we classify all finite groups whose enhanced power graphs are split and threshold. We also classify all finite nilpotent groups whose enhanced power graphs are chordal graphs and cographs. Finally, we give some families of non-nilpotent groups whose enhanced power graphs are chordal graphs and cographs. These results partly answer a question posed by Peter J. Cameron.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a simple finite connected graph. The line graph $L(G)$ of graph $G$ is the graph whose vertices are the edges of $G$, where $ef \in E(L(G))$ when $e \cap f \neq \emptyset$. Iteratively, the higher order line graphs are defined inductively as $L^1(G) = L(G)$ and $L^n(G) = L(L^{n-1}(G))$ for $n \geq 2$. In [Derived graphs and digraphs, Beitrage zur Graphentheorie (Teubner, Leipzig 1968), 17--33 (1968)], Beineke characterize line graphs in terms of nine forbidden subgraphs. Inspired by this result, in this paper, we characterize second order line graphs in terms of pure forbidden induced subgraphs. We also give a sufficient list of forbidden subgraphs for a graph $G$ such that $G$ is a higher order line graph. We characterize all order line graphs of graph $G$ with $\Delta(G) = 3$ and $4$.

Abstract:We study left-hand side restrictions of the induced subgraph isomorphism problem: Fixing a class , for given graphs G and arbitrary H we ask for induced subgraphs of H isomorphic to G.For the homomorphism problem this kind of restriction has been studied by Grohe and Dalmau, Kolaitis and Vardi for the decision problem and by Dalmau and Jonsson for its counting variant.We give a dichotomy result for both variants of the induced subgraph isomorphism problem. Under some assumption from parameterized complexity theory, these problems are solvable in polynomial time if and only if contains no arbitrarily large graphs.All classifications are given by means of parameterized complexity. The results are presented for arbitrary structures of bounded arity which implies, for example, analogous results for directed graphs.Furthermore, we show that no such dichotomy is possible in the sense of classical complexity. That is, if there are classes such that the induced subgraph isomorphism problem on is neither in nor -complete. This argument may be of independent interest, because it is applicable to various parameterized problems.

Abstract:The smallest eigenvalue of a graph is the smallest eigenvalue of its adjacency matrix. We show that the family of graphs with smallest eigenvalue at least $-\lambda$ can be defined by a finite set of forbidden induced subgraphs if and only if $\lambda < \lambda^*$, where $\lambda^* = \rho^{1/2} + \rho^{-1/2} \approx 2.01980$, and $\rho$ is the unique real root of $x^3 = x + 1$. This resolves a question raised by Bussemaker and Neumaier. As a byproduct, we find all the limit points of smallest eigenvalues of graphs, supplementing Hoffman's work on those limit points in $[-2, \infty)$.

In this paper we have discussed about the forbidden subgraphs of nilpotent, commuting and solvable conjugacy class graphs of groups.

Abstract:Each traceable graph must be a block-chain; however, a block-chain is not necessarily traceable in general. Whether a given graph is a block-chain or not can be easily verified by a polynomial algorithm. It occurs to us that forbidden subgraph conditions for a block-chain are traceable. In this article, we characterize all pairs of disconnected forbidden subgraphs for the traceability of block-chains, so as to completely solve pairs of forbidden subgraphs for the traceability of block-chains (including disconnected and connected).

Abstract:The undirected power graph (or simply power graph) of a group $G$, denoted by $P(G)$, is a graph whose vertices are the elements of the group $G$, in which two vertices $u$ and $v$ are adjacent if and only if either $u=v^m$ or $v=u^n$ for some positive integers $m$, $n$. Forbidden subgraph has a significant role in graph theory. In our previous work \cite{cmm}, we consider five important classes of forbidden subgraphs of power graph which include perfect graphs, cographs, chordal graphs, split graphs and threshold graphs. In this communication, we go even further in that way. This study, inspired by the articles \cite{celmmp,dong,ck}, examines additional $4$ significant forbidden classes, including chain graphs, diamond-free graphs, $\{P_{5}, \overline{P_{5}}\}$-free graphs and $\{P_{2}\cup P_{3}, \overline{P_{2}\cup P_{3}}\}$-free graph. The finite groups whose power graphs are chain graphs, diamond-free graphs, and $\{P_{2}\cup P_{3}, \overline{P_{2}\cup P_{3}}\}$-free graphs have been successfully identified in this work. In case of $\{P_{5}, \overline{P_{5}}\}$-free graphs, we completely determine all the nilpotent groups, direct product of two groups, finite simple groups whose power graph is $\{P_{5}, \overline{P_{5}}\}$-free.

Coloring graphs with forbidden almost bipartite subgraphs

Abstract:Alon, Krivelevich, and Sudakov conjectured in 1999 that for every finite graph $F$, there exists a quantity $c(F)$ such that $\chi(G) \leqslant (c(F) + o(1)) \Delta / \log\Delta$ whenever $G$ is an $F$-free graph of maximum degree $\Delta$. The largest class of connected graphs $F$ for which this conjecture has been verified so far, by Alon, Krivelevich, and Sudakov themselves, comprises the almost bipartite graphs (i.e., subgraphs of the complete tripartite graph $K_{1,t,t}$ for some $t \in \mathbb{N}$). However, the optimal value for $c(F)$ remains unknown even for such graphs. Bollobás showed, using random regular graphs, that $c(F) \geqslant 1/2$ when $F$ contains a cycle. On the other hand, Davies, Kang, Pirot, and Sereni recently established an upper bound of $c(K_{1,t,t}) \leqslant t$. We improve this to a constant, showing $c(F) \leqslant 4$ for every almost bipartite graph $F$. This surprisingly makes the bound independent of $F$ in all the known cases of the conjecture, leading us to make a new conjecture that $c(F)$ is always bounded above by some constant $c$ independent of $F$. We also establish a more general version of our bound in the setting of DP-coloring (also known as correspondence coloring) and consider some algorithmic consequences of our results.

Abstract:In this work, we introduce and study the forbidden-vertices problem. Given a polytope P and a subset X of its vertices, we study the complexity of linear optimization over the subset of vertices of P that are not contained in X. This problem is closely related to finding the k-best basic solutions to a linear problem. We show that the complexity of the problem changes significantly depending on the encoding of both P and X. We provide additional tractability results and extended formulations when P has binary vertices only. Some applications and extensions to integral polytopes are discussed.

Abstract:The feasible region Ωind(F) of a graph F is the collection of points (x,y) in the unit square such that there exists a sequence of graphs whose edge densities approach x and whose induced F-densities approach y. A complete description of Ωind(F) is not known for any F with at least four vertices that is not a clique or an independent set. The feasible region provides a lot of combinatorial information about F. For example, the supremum of y over all (x,y)∈Ωind(F) is the inducibility of F and Ωind(Kr) yields the Kruskal-Katona and clique density theorems.We begin a systematic study of Ωind(F) by proving some general statements about the shape of Ωind(F) and giving results for some specific graphs F. Many of our theorems apply to the more general setting of quantum graphs. For example, we prove a bound for quantum graphs that generalizes an old result of Bollobás for the number of cliques in a graph with given edge density. We also consider the problems of determining Ωind(F) when F=Kr−, F is a star, or F is a complete bipartite graph. In the case of Kr− our results sharpen those predicted by the edge-statistics conjecture of Alon et al. while also extending a theorem of Hirst for K4− that was proved using computer aided techniques and flag algebras. The case of the 4-cycle seems particularly interesting and we conjecture that Ωind(C4) is determined by the solution to the triangle density problem, which has been solved by Razborov.
Graphs with constant links and induced Turán numbers

Abstract:A graph $G$ of constant link $L$ is a graph in which the neighborhood of any vertex induces a graph isomorphic to $L$. Given two different graphs, $H$ and $G$, the induced Turán number ${\rm ex}(n; H, G{\rm -ind})$ is defined as the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex graph having no subgraph isomorphic to $H$ and no copy from $G$ as an induced subgraph. Our main motivation in this paper is to establish a bridge between graphs with constant link and induced Turán numbers via the class of $t$-regular, $k$-uniform (linear) hypergraphs of girth at least $4$, as well as to present several methods of constructing connected graphs with constant link. We show that, for integers $t \geq 3$ and $k \geq 3$, ${\rm ex}(n; C_k, K_{1,t}{\rm -ind}) \leq (k - 2)(t - 1)n/2$ and that equality holds for infinitely many values of $n$. This result is built upon the existence of graphs with constant link $tL$ with restricted cycle length, which we prove in another theorem. More precisely, we show that, given a graph $F$ with constant link $L$ and circumference $c$, then, for all integers $t \geq 2$ and $g > c$, there exists a graph with constant link $tL$ which is free of cycles of length $l$, for all $c < l < g$. We provide two proofs of this result using distinct approaches. We further present constructions of graphs with constant links $tL$, $t \geq 2$, and restricted cycle length based on Steiner Systems. Finally, starting from a connected graph of constant link $tL$, for $t \geq 2$, having order $n$ and restricted cycle lengths, we provide a method to construct an infinite collection of connected graphs of constant link $tL$ that preserves the cycle length restriction, and whose orders form an arithmetic progression $qn$, $q \geq 1$.

The largest subgraph without a forbidden induced subgraph

Abstract:We initiate the systematic study of the following Turán-type question. Suppose $\Gamma$ is a graph with $n$ vertices such that the edge density between any pair of subsets of vertices of size at least $t$ is at most $1 - c$, for some $t$ and $c > 0$. What is the largest number of edges in a subgraph $G \subseteq \Gamma$ which does not contain a fixed graph $H$ as an induced subgraph or, more generally, which belongs to a hereditary property $\mathcal{P}$? This provides a common generalization of two recently studied cases, namely $\Gamma$ being a (pseudo-)random graph and a graph without a large complete bipartite subgraph. We focus on the interesting case where $H$ is a bipartite graph. We determine the answer up to a constant factor with respect to $n$ and $t$, for certain bipartite $H$ and for $\Gamma$ either a dense random graph or a Paley graph with a square number of vertices. In particular, our bounds match if $H$ is a tree, or if one part of $H$ has $d$ vertices complete to the other part, all other vertices in that part have degree at most $d$, and the other part has sufficiently many vertices. As applications of the latter result, we answer a question of Alon, Krivelevich, and Samotij on the largest subgraph with a hereditary property which misses a bipartite graph, and determine up to a constant factor the largest number of edges in a string subgraph of $\Gamma$. The proofs are based on a variant of the dependent random choice and a novel approach for finding induced copies by inductively defining probability distributions supported on induced copies of smaller subgraphs.

Leaky Positive Semidefinite Forcing on Graphs

Abstract:We introduce $\ell$-leaky positive semidefinite forcing and the $\ell$-leaky positive semidefinite number of a graph, $Z_{(\ell)}^+{G}$, which combines the positive semidefinite color change rule with the addition of leaks to the graph. Furthermore, we determine general properties of $Z_{(\ell)}^+{G}$ and $Z_{(\ell)}^+{G}$ for various graphs, including path graphs, complete graphs, wheel graphs, complete bipartite graphs, trees, hypercubes, and prisms. We also define $\ell$-leaky positive semidefinite forts with the purpose of unveiling differences between $\ell$-leaky standard forcing and $\ell$-leaky positive semidefinite forcing.

Abstract:Erdős and Hajnal conjectured that for every graph $H$, there exists $c>0$ such that every $H$-free graph $G$ has a clique or a stable set of size at least $|G|^c$ (a graph is $H$-free if it has no induced subgraph isomorphic to $H$). Alon, Pach, and Solymosi reduced the Erdős-Hajnal conjecture to the case when $H$ is {\em prime} (that is, $H$ cannot be obtained by vertex-substitution from smaller graphs); but until now, it was not shown for any prime graph with more than five vertices. We will provide infinitely many prime graphs that satisfy the conjecture. Let $H$ be a graph with the property that for every prime induced subgraph $G'$ with $|G'|\ge 3$, $G'$ has a vertex of degree one and a vertex of degree $|G'|-2$. We will prove that every graph $H$ with this property satisfies the Erdős-Hajnal conjecture, and infinitely many graphs with this property are prime. More generally, say a graph is {\em buildable} if every prime induced subgraph with at least three vertices has a vertex of degree one. We prove that if $H_1$ and $\overline{H_2}$ are buildable, there exists $c>0$ such that every graph $G$ that is both $H_1$-free and $H_2$-free has a clique or a stable set of size at least $|G|^c$. Our proof uses a new technique of ``iterative sparsification'', where we pass to a sequence of successively more restricted induced subgraphs. This approach also extends to ordered graphs and to tournaments. For ordered graphs, we obtain a theorem which significantly extends a recent result of Pach and Tomon about excluding monotone paths; and for tournaments, we obtain infinitely many new prime tournaments that satisfy the Erdős-Hajnal conjecture (in tournament form).

Abstract:We say a class C of graphs is clean if for every positive integer t there exists a positive integer w ( t ) such that every graph in C with treewidth more than w ( t ) contains an induced subgraph isomorphic to one of the following: the complete graph K t , the complete bipartite graph K t , t , a subdivision of the ( t × t ) -wall or the line graph of a subdivision of the ( t × t ) -wall. In this paper, we adapt a method due to Lozin and Razgon (building on earlier ideas of Weißauer) to prove that the class of all H-free graphs (that is, graphs with no induced subgraph isomorphic to a fixed graph H) is clean if and only if H is a forest whose components are subdivided stars. Their method is readily applied to yield the above characterization. However, our main result is much stronger: for every forest H as above, we show that forbidding certain connected graphs containing H as an induced subgraph (rather than H itself) is enough to obtain a clean class of graphs. Along the proof of the latter strengthening, we build on a result of Davies and produce, for every positive integer η, a complete description of unavoidable connected induced subgraphs of a connected graph G containing η vertices from a suitably large given set of vertices in G. This is of independent interest, and will be used in subsequent papers in this series.

Abstract:We study Steiner Forest on $H$-subgraph-free graphs, that is, graphs that do not contain some fixed graph $H$ as a (not necessarily induced) subgraph. We are motivated by a recent framework that completely characterizes the complexity of many problems on $H$-subgraph-free graphs. However, in contrast to e.g. the related Steiner Tree problem, Steiner Forest falls outside this framework. Hence, the complexity of Steiner Forest on $H$-subgraph-free graphs remained tantalizingly open. In this paper, we make significant progress towards determining the complexity of Steiner Forest on $H$-subgraph-free graphs. Our main results are four novel polynomial-time algorithms for different excluded graphs $H$ that are central to further understand its complexity. Along the way, we study the complexity of Steiner Forest for graphs with a small $c$-deletion set, that is, a small set $S$ of vertices such that each component of $G-S$ has size at most $c$. Using this parameter, we give two noteworthy algorithms that we later employ as subroutines. First, we prove Steiner Forest is FPT parameterized by $|S|$ when $c=1$ (i.e. the vertex cover number). Second, we prove Steiner Forest is polynomial-time solvable for graphs with a 2-deletion set of size at most 2. The latter result is tight, as the problem is NP-complete for graphs with a 3-deletion set of size 2.

Abstract:Detecting specific structures in a network has been a very active theme of research in distributed computing for at least a decade. In this paper, we start the study of subgraph detection from the perspective of local certification. Remember that a local certification is a distributed mechanism enabling the nodes of a network to check the correctness of the current configuration, thanks to small pieces of information called certificates. Our main question is: For a given graph $H$, what is the minimum certificate size that allows checking that the network does not contain $H$ as a (possibly induced) subgraph? We show a variety of lower and upper bounds, uncovering an interesting interplay between the optimal certificate size, the size of the forbidden subgraph, and the locality of the verification. Along the way we introduce several new technical tools, in particular what we call the \emph{layered map}, which is not specific to forbidden subgraphs and that we expect to be useful for certifying many other properties.
