Abstract:We consider the class of (C4, diamond)-free graphs; graphs in this class do not contain a C4 or a diamond as an induced subgraph. We provide an efficient recognition algorithm for this class. We count the number of maximal cliques in a (C4, diamond)-free graph and the number of n-vertex, labeled (C4, diamond)-free graphs. We also give an efficient algorithm for finding a largest clique in the more general class of (house, diamond)-free graphs.

Abstract:Seymour's Second Neighborhood Conjecture (SNC) asserts that every oriented graph has a vertex whose first out-neighborhood is at most as large as its second out-neighborhood. In this paper, we prove that if $G$ is a graph containing no induced $C_4$, $\overline{C_4}$, $S_3$, chair and $\overline{chair}$, then every oriented graph missing $G$ satisfies this conjecture. As a consequence, we deduce that the conjecture holds for every oriented graph missing a threshold graph, a generalized comb or a star.

Abstract:Let $B$ and $R$ be two simple graphs with vertex set $V$, and let $G(B,R)$ be the simple graph with vertex set $V$, in which two vertices are adjacent if they are adjacent in at least one of $B$ and $R$. We prove that if $B$ and $R$ are two $C_4$-free graphs on the same vertex set $V$ and $G(B,R)$ is the complete graph, then there exists an $B$-clique $X$, an $R$-clique $Y$ and a clique $Z$ in $B$ and $R$, such that $V=X\cup Y\cup Z$. Further, if $x\in Z$ then $x$ is one of the vertices of some double $C_5$ in $G(B,R)$. In particular, if also $G(B,R)$ does not contains a double $C_5$, then $V$ is obedient. We obtain that if $B$ and $R$ are $C_4$-free graphs then $\omega(G(B,R))\leq \omega(B)+\omega(R)+\frac{1}{2}\min(\omega(B),\omega(R))$ and $\omega(G(B,R))\leq \omega(B)+\omega(R)+\omega(H(B,R))$ where $H(B,R)$ is the simple graph with vertex set $V$, in which two vertices are adjacent if they are adjacent in $B$ and $R$.
Structure and coloring of a family of ($P_7, C_5$)-free graphs

Abstract:Let $P_t$ and $C_t$ be a path and a cycle on $t$ vertices, respectively. In 2021, Choudum {\em et al.} [Disc. Math. 344 (2021) 112244] determined the structures of $(P_7,C_7,C_4$, diamond)-free and $(P_7,C_7,C_4$, gem)-frees, and gave correspondingly tight upper bounds to the chromatic numbers of these graphs. In this paper, we study the structure of $(P_7, C_5$, kite, paraglider)-free graphs, which is a superfamily of $(P_7, C_5$, diamond)-free graphs. We show that there is a unique connected imperfect $(P_7, C_5$, kite, paraglider)-free graph with $\delta(G)\geq\omega(G)+1$, which has no clique cutsets, no universal cliques, and no pair of vertices of which one's neighborhoods contains the other's. As a consequence, we show that $(P_7, C_5$, kite, paraglider)-free graphs are $\chi$-polydet with a binding function $\omega(G)+1$. Where a {\em diamond} (resp. {\em gem}) consists of a $P_3$ (resp. $P_4$) and a new vertex adjacent to all vertices of the $P_3$ (resp. $P_4$), a {\em kite} consists of a $P_4$ and a new vertex adjacent to consecutive three vertices of the $P_4$, and a {\em paraglider} consists of a $C_4$ and a new vertex adjacent to three vertices of the $C_4$.

Abstract:We say that a graph $G$ has an odd $K_4$-subdivision if some subgraph of $G$ is isomorphic to a $K_4$-subdivision and whose faces are all odd holes of $G$. For a number $\ell\geq 2$, let $\mathcal{G}_{\ell}$ denote the family of graphs which have girth $2\ell+1$ and have no odd hole with length greater than $2\ell+1$. Wu, Xu and Xu conjectured that every graph in $\bigcup_{\ell\geq2}\mathcal{G}_{\ell}$ is $3$-colorable. Recently, Chudnovsky et al. and Wu et al., respectively, proved that every graph in $\mathcal{G}_2$ and $\mathcal{G}_3$ is $3$-colorable. In this paper, we prove that no $4$-vertex-critical graph in $\bigcup_{\ell\geq5}\mathcal{G}_{\ell}$ has an odd $K_4$-subdivision. Using this result, Chen proved that all graphs in $\bigcup_{\ell\geq5}\mathcal{G}_{\ell}$ are $3$-colorable.

Abstract:For a fixed set ${\cal H}$ of graphs, a graph $G$ is ${\cal H}$-subgraph-free if $G$ does not contain any $H \in {\cal H}$ as a (not necessarily induced) subgraph. A recently proposed framework gives a complete classification on ${\cal H}$-subgraph-free graphs (for finite sets ${\cal H}$) for problems that are solvable in polynomial time on graph classes of bounded treewidth, NP-complete on subcubic graphs, and whose NP-hardness is preserved under edge subdivision. While a lot of problems satisfy these conditions, there are also many problems that do not satisfy all three conditions and for which the complexity in ${\cal H}$-subgraph-free graphs is unknown. We study problems for which only the first two conditions of the framework hold (they are solvable in polynomial time on classes of bounded treewidth and NP-complete on subcubic graphs, but NP-hardness is not preserved under edge subdivision). In particular, we make inroads into the classification of the complexity of four such problems: Hamilton Cycle, $k$-Induced Disjoint Paths, $C_5$-Colouring and Star $3$-Colouring. Although we do not complete the classifications, we show that the boundary between polynomial time and NP-complete differs among our problems and also from problems that do satisfy all three conditions of the framework, in particular when we forbid certain subdivisions of the ``H''-graph (the graph that looks like the letter ``H''). Hence, we exhibit a rich complexity landscape among problems for ${\cal H}$-subgraph-free graph classes.

Abstract:In 2012, Lévêque, Maffray, and Trotignon conjectured that each graph $G$ that contains no induced subdivision of $K_4$ is $4$-colorable. In this paper, we prove that this conjecture holds when $G$ contains a $K_{1,2,3}$.

Abstract:All planar graphs are 4-colorable and 5-choosable, while some planar graphs are not 4-choosable. Determining which properties guarantee that a planar graph can be colored using lists of size four has received significant attention. In terms of constraining the structure of the graph, for any $\ell \in \{3,4,5,6,7\}$, a planar graph is 4-choosable if it is $\ell$-cycle-free. In terms of constraining the list assignment, one refinement of $k$-choosability is choosability with separation. A graph is $(k,s)$-choosable if the graph is colorable from lists of size $k$ where adjacent vertices have at most $s$ common colors in their lists. Every planar graph is $(4,1)$-choosable, but there exist planar graphs that are not $(4,3)$-choosable. It is an open question whether planar graphs are always $(4,2)$-choosable. A chorded $\ell$-cycle is an $\ell$-cycle with one additional edge. We demonstrate for each $\ell \in \{5,6,7\}$ that a planar graph is $(4,2)$-choosable if it does not contain chorded $\ell$-cycles.

Abstract:This paper gives a precise structure theorem for the class of graphs which do not contain $W_4$ as an immersion. This strengthens a previous result of Belmonte at al. that gives a rough description of this class. In fact, we prove a stronger theorem concerning rooted immersions of $W_4$ where one terminal is specified in advance. This stronger result is key in a forthcoming structure theorem for graphs with no $K_{3,3}$ immersion.

Abstract:The Borodin-Kostochka Conjecture states that for a graph $G$, if $\Delta(G)\geq9$, then $\chi(G)\leq\max\{\Delta(G)-1,\omega(G)\}$. We use $P_t$ and $C_t$ to denote a path and a cycle on $t$ vertices, respectively. Let $C=v_1v_2v_3v_4v_5v_1$ be an induced $C_5$. A {\em $C_5^+$} is a graph obtained from $C$ by adding a $C_3=xyzx$ and a $P_2=t_1t_2$ such that (1) $x$ and $y$ are both exactly adjacent to $v_1,v_2,v_3$ in $V(C)$, $z$ is exactly adjacent to $v_2$ in $V(C)$, $t_1$ is exactly adjacent to $v_4,v_5$ in $V(C)$ and $t_2$ is exactly adjacent to $v_1,v_4,v_5$ in $V(C)$, (2) $t_1$ is exactly adjacent to $z$ in $\{x,y,z\}$ and $t_2$ has no neighbors in $\{x,y,z\}$. In this paper, we show that the Borodin-Kostochka Conjecture holds for ($P_6,C_4,H$)-free graphs, where $H\in \{K_7,C_5^+\}$. This generalizes some results of Gupta and Pradhan in \cite{GP21,GP24}.

Abstract:We use $P_t$ and $C_t$ to denote a path and a cycle on $t$ vertices, respectively. A {\em bull} is a graph consisting of a triangle with two disjoint pendant edges, a {\em hammer} is a graph obtained by identifying an endvertex of a $P_3$ with a vertex of a triangle. A class ${\cal F}$ is $\chi$-bounded if there is a function $f$ such that $\chi(G)\leq f(\omega(G))$ for all induced subgraphs $G$ of a graph in ${\cal F}$. A class ${\cal C}$ of graphs is {\em Pollyanna} (resp. {\em linear-Pollyanna}) if ${\cal C}\cap {\cal F}$ is polynomially (resp. linear-polynomially) $\chi$-bounded for every $\chi$-bounded class ${\cal F}$ of graphs. Chudnovsky {\em et al} \cite{CCDO2023} showed that both the classes of bull-free graphs and hammer-free graphs are Pollyannas. Let $G$ be a connected graph with no clique cutsets and no universal cliques. In this paper, we show that $G$ is $(C_4$, hammer)-free if and only if it has girth at least 5, and $G$ is $(C_4$, bull)-free if and only if it is a clique blowup of some graph of girth at least 5. As a consequence, we show that both the classes of $(C_4$, bull)-free graphs and $(C_4$, hammer)-free graphs are linear-Pollyannas.

Complexity Framework for Forbidden Subgraphs III: When Problems are Tractable on Subcubic Graphs

Abstract:For any finite set $\mathcal{H} = \{H_1,\ldots,H_p\}$ of graphs, a graph is $\mathcal{H}$-subgraph-free if it does not contain any of $H_1,\ldots,H_p$ as a subgraph. In recent work, meta-classifications have been studied: these show that if graph problems satisfy certain prescribed conditions, their complexity is determined on classes of $\mathcal{H}$-subgraph-free graphs. We continue this work and focus on problems that have polynomial-time solutions on classes that have bounded treewidth or maximum degree at most~$3$ and examine their complexity on $H$-subgraph-free graph classes where $H$ is a connected graph. With this approach, we obtain comprehensive classifications for (Independent) Feedback Vertex Set, Connected Vertex Cover, Colouring and Matching Cut. This resolves a number of open problems. We highlight that, to establish that Independent Feedback Vertex Set belongs to this collection of problems, we first show that it can be solved in polynomial time on graphs of maximum degree $3$. We demonstrate that, with the exception of the complete graph on four vertices, each graph in this class has a minimum size feedback vertex set that is also an independent set.

Induced $C_4$-free subgraphs with large average degree

Abstract:We prove that there exists a constant $C$ so that, for all $s,k \in \mathbb{N}$, if $G$ has average degree at least $k^{Cs^3}$ and does not contain $K_{s,s}$ as a subgraph then it contains an induced subgraph which is $C_4$-free and has average degree at least $k$. It was known that some function of $s$ and $k$ suffices, but this is the first explicit bound. We give several applications of this result, including short and streamlined proofs of the following two corollaries. We show that there exists a constant $C$ so that, for all $s,k \in \mathbb{N}$, if $G$ has average degree at least $k^{Cs^3}$ and does not contain $K_{s,s}$ as a subgraph then it contains an induced subdivision of $K_k$. This is the first quantitative improvement on a well-known theorem of Kühn and Osthus; their proof gives a bound that is triply exponential in both $k$ and $s$. We also show that for any hereditary degree-bounded class $\mathcal{F}$, there exists a constant $C=C_\mathcal{F}$ so that $C^{s^3}$ is a degree-bounding function for $\mathcal{F}$. This is the first bound of any type on the rate of growth of such functions. It is open whether there is always a polynomial degree-bounding function.

Abstract:The ordinary generating function of the number of complete subgraphs of $G$ is called a clique polynomial of $G$ and is denoted by $C(G,x)$. A real root of $C(G,x)$ is called a clique root of the graph $G$. Hajiabolhasan and Mehrabadi showed that the clique polynomial has always a real root in the interval $[-1,0)$. Moreover, they showed that the class of triangle-free graphs has only clique roots. Here, we generalize their result by showing that the class of $K_4$-free chordal graphs has also only clique roots. Moreover, we show that this class has always a clique root $-1$. We finally conclude the paper with several important questions and conjectures.

On the structure of a smallest counterexample and a new class verifying the 2-Decomposition Conjecture

Abstract:The 2-Decomposition Conjecture, equivalent to the 3-Decomposition Conjecture stated in 2011 by Hoffmann-Ostenhof, claims that every connected graph $G$ with vertices of degree 2 and 3, for which $G \setminus E(C)$ is disconnected for every cycle $C$, admits a decomposition into a spanning tree and a matching. In this work we present two main results focused on developing a strategy to prove the 2-Decomposition Conjecture. One of them is a list of structural properties of a minimum counterexample for this conjecture. Among those properties, we prove that a minimum counterexample has girth at least 5 and its vertices of degree 2 are at distance at least 3. Motivated by the class of smallest counterexamples, we show that the 2-Decomposition Conjecture holds for graphs whose vertices of degree 3 induce a collection of cacti in which each vertex belongs to a cycle. The core of the proof of this result may possibly be used in an inductive proof of the 2-Decomposition Conjecture based on a parameter that relates the number of vertices of degree 2 and 3 in a minimum counterexample.

Finite groups with geodetic Cayley graphs

Abstract:A connected undirected graph is called \emph{geodetic} if for every pair of vertices there is a unique shortest path connecting them. It has been conjectured that for finite groups, the only geodetic Cayley graphs which occur are odd cycles and complete graphs. In this article we present a series of theoretical results which contribute to a computer search verifying this conjecture for all groups of size up to 1024. The conjecture is also verified theoretically for several infinite families of groups including dihedral and some families of nilpotent groups. Two key results which enable the computer search to reach as far as it does are: if the center of a group has even order, then the conjecture holds (this eliminates all 2-groups from our computer search); if a Cayley graph is geodetic then there are bounds relating the size of the group, generating set and center (which cuts down the number of generating sets which must be searched significantly).

Abstract:The prism over a graph $G$ is the Cartesian product of $G$ with the complete graph $K_2$. $G$ is prism-hamiltonian if the prism over $G$ has a Hamilton cycle. A good even cactus is a connected graph in which every block is either an edge or an even cycle, and every vertex is contained in at most two blocks. It is known that good even cacti are prism-hamiltonian. Indeed, showing the existence of a spanning good even cactus has become one of the most common techniques in proving prism-hamiltonicity. Špacapan asked whether having a spanning good even cactus is equivalent to having a hamiltonian prism for 3-connected planar graphs. In this article we give a negative answer to this question by showing that there are infinitely many 3-connected planar prism-hamiltonian graphs that have no spanning good even cactus. We also prove the existence of an infinite class of 3-connected planar graphs that have a spanning good even cactus but no spanning good even cactus with maximum degree three.
