Abstract:In April 2016, a community of researchers working in the area of Principles of Data Management (PDM) joined in the Dagstuhl Castle in Germany for a workshop organized jointly by the Executive Committee of the ACM Symposium on Principles of Database Systems (PODS) and the Council of the International Conference on Database Theory (ICDT). The mission of this workshop was to identify and explore some of the most important research directions that have high relevance to society and to Computer Science today, and where the PDM community has the potential to make significant contributions. This report describes the family of research directions that the workshop focused on from three perspectives: potential practical relevance, results already obtained, and research questions that appear surmountable in the short and medium term. Abstract:Geophysical electromagnetics (EM) plays an important role in mineral exploration and is increasingly being used to help solve other problems of relevance to society. In this article we reflect, from our perspective at University of British Columbia (UBC), on the development of EM geophysics over the years and on our attempts to enhance its understanding, and its visibility and usefulness to the community. The availability of open-source resources, and a shift within the EM community towards collaborative practices for sharing and creating software and educational resources, has been a driver of progress towards these goals. In this article we provide some background about this trajectory and how the SEG Distinguished Instructor Short Course (DISC) was a catalyst in our development of software and resources and in our broader goal of creating more collaborative connections within the EM community.

Abstract:The bulk of this paper centers around the tension between confinement and freedom in QCD. I discuss how it can be understood heuristically as a manifestation of self-adhesive glue and how it fits within the larger contexts of energy-time uncertainty and $\textit{real virtuality}$. I discuss the possible emergence of $\textit{treeons}$ as a tangible ingredient of (at least) pure gluon $SU(3)$. I propose $\textit{flux channeling}$ as a method to address that and allied questions about triality flux numerically, and indicate how to implement it for electric and magnetic flux in material systems. That bulk is framed with broad-stroke, necessarily selective sketches of the past and possible future of strong interaction physics. At the end, I've added an expression of gratitude for my formative experience at the Erice school, in 1973.

Abstract:The papers in this volume represent a broad spectrum of observational, theoretical, and computational astrophysics, sharing as a unifying core the Disk-Halo Interaction in the Milky Way and other spiral galaxies. This topic covers a wide range of Galactic and extra-galactic research, built on a foundation of numerous and diverse physical processes. This summary groups the papers according to six themes, with some historical background and finally a look to the future. The final message is that the astrophysical techniques discussed and reviewed at this conference will grow over the next decade to answer even more fundamental questions about galaxy evolution and the history of the universe.

Abstract:Hadronic diffraction has become a hot and fashionable subject in recent years due to the great interest triggered by the HERA and Tevatron data. These data have helped to put the field in a different perspective paving the road to a hopefully more complete understanding than hitherto achieved. The forthcoming data in the next few years from even higher energies (LHC) promise to sustain this interest for a long time. It is, therefore, necessary to provide the younger generations with as complete as possible discussion of the main developments that have marked the growth of high energy diffractive physics in the past and to assess the present state of the art. For this reason, this part will be by far the largest. The analysis of the relationship between conventional diffractive physics and the low-x physics from deep inelastic scattering will allow us also to review the instruments which could help to understand the developments we can expect from the future.

Abstract:John Wheeler’s description of the progression from graduate student to professor as being the passage from knowing everything about nothing to knowing nothing about everything carries over with obvious (and inessential) modifications to the progression from talks at parallel sessions to the conference summary. I feel especially daunted here, after listening to a series of beautiful plenary talks that have already summarized their subject areas, so that I’m reduced to providing a summary of the second order. In order to supply at least a small amount of value added, I’ll try to frame the new developments actually reported at the Conference within the broader context of contemporary physics, and also to indicate a few directions that I feel are important and promising, but which did not get emphasized during the Conference. 1. Digital Scholarship in the Humanities

Abstract:This keynote address for the 2014 Digital Humanities conference is a practitioner’s talk, and—though the abstract belies it—an optimistic one. I take as given the evidence that human beings are irrevocably altering the conditions for life on Earth and that, despite certain unpredictabilities, we live at the cusp of a mass extinction. What is the place of digital humanities (DH) practice in the new social and geological era of the Anthropocene? What are the DH community’s most significant responsibilities, and to whom? This talk positions itself in deep time, but strives for a foothold in the vital here-and-now of service to broad publics. From the presentist, emotional aesthetics of Dark Mountain to the arms-length futurism of the Long Now, I dwell on concepts of graceful degradation, preservation, memorialization, apocalypse, ephemerality, and minimal computing. I discuss digital recovery and close reading of texts and artifacts once thought lost forever, and the ways that prosopography, graphesis, and distant reading open new vistas on the longue durée. Can DH develop a practical ethics of resilience and repair? Can it become more humane while working at inhuman scales? Can we resist narratives of progress, and still progress? I wish to open community discussion about the practice of DH, and what to give, in the face of a great hiatus or the end of it all.
