Abstract: These reports present the results of the 2013 Community Summer Study of the APS Division of Particles and Fields ("Snowmass 2013") on the future program of particle physics in the U.S. Chapter 2, on the Intensity Frontier, discusses the program of research with high-intensity beams and rare processes. This area includes experiments on neutrinos, proton decay, charged-lepton and quark weak interactions, atomic and nuclear probes of fundamental symmetries, and searches for new, light, weakly-interacting particles.

Abstract:The answer to the question in the title is: in search of new physics beyond the Standard Model, for which there are many motivations, including the likely instability of the electroweak vacuum, dark matter, the origin of matter, the masses of neutrinos, the naturalness of the hierarchy of mass scales, cosmological inflation and the search for quantum gravity. So far, however, there are no clear indications about the theoretical solutions to these problems, nor the experimental strategies to resolve them. It makes sense now to prepare various projects for possible future accelerators, so as to be ready for decisions when the physics outlook becomes clearer. Paraphrasing George Harrison, "If you don't yet know where you're going, any road may take you there."

Abstract:Computing has become a major component of all particle physics experiments and in many areas of theoretical particle physics. Progress in HEP experiment and theory will require significantly more computing, software development, storage, and networking, with different projects stretching future capabilities in different ways. However, there are many common needs among different areas in HEP, so more community planning is advised to increase efficiency. Careful and continuing review of the topics we studied, i.e., user needs and capabilities of current and future technology, is needed.

Abstract:The after-dinner talk has by now become a tradition of this Conference series on Quark Confinement and the Hadron Spectrum. On this occasion, I have tried to combine a free-style and (hopefully) amusing presentation with deep questions of physics especially connected with the dynamics of strong interaction. To this end some masterpieces of classical music (by Beethoven, Mozart, Dvorak, Stravinsky ...) and pop music (by Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton) were employed to illustrate certain aspects of physics. By no means was this presentation (nor this paper) intended as a comprehensive review of the different topics examined during the Conference, but rather a call for further thinking on the sinergy of different branches of physics and the excitement of foreseen discoveries in a not too distant future.

Abstract:The decade since Snowmass 2013 has seen extraordinary progress of high energy physics research performed--or planned for--at underground facilities. Drs. T. Kajita and A.B. McDonald were awarded the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physics for the discovery of neutrino oscillation, which show that neutrinos have mass. The U.S. has embarked on the development of the world-class LBNF/DUNE science program to investigate neutrino properties. The Generation 2 dark matter program is advancing to full data collection in the coming 5 years, a Dark Matter New Initiatives program has begun, and the U.S. dark matter community is looking toward a Generation 3 program of large-scale dark matter direct detection searches. The Sanford Underground Research Facility has become a focal point for U.S. underground facilities and infrastructure investment. The status since the 2013 Snowmass process as well as the outcome from the 2014 P5 program of recommendations is reviewed. These are then evaluated based on the activities and discussions of the Snowmass 2021 process resulting in conclusions looking forward to the coming decade of high energy physics research performed in underground facilities.

Abstract:John Wheeler’s description of the progression from graduate student to professor as being the passage from knowing everything about nothing to knowing nothing about everything carries over with obvious (and inessential) modifications to the progression from talks at parallel sessions to the conference summary. I feel especially daunted here, after listening to a series of beautiful plenary talks that have already summarized their subject areas, so that I’m reduced to providing a summary of the second order. In order to supply at least a small amount of value added, I’ll try to frame the new developments actually reported at the Conference within the broader context of contemporary physics, and also to indicate a few directions that I feel are important and promising, but which did not get emphasized during the Conference. 1. Abstract:We are emerging from a period of consolidation in particle physics. Its great, historic achievement was to establish the Theory of Matter. This Theory will serve as our description of ordinary matter under ordinary conditions -- allowing for an extremely liberal definition of "ordinary -- for the foreseeable future. Yet there are many indications, ranging from the numerical to the semi-mystical, that a new fertile period lies before us. We will discover compelling evidence for the unification of fundamental forces and for new quantum dimensions (low-energy supersymmetry). We will identify new forms of matter, which dominate the mass density of the Universe. We will achieve much better fundamental understanding of the behavior of matter in extreme astrophysical and cosmological environments. Lying beyond these expectations, we can identify deep questions that seem to call for ideas outside our present grasp. And there's still plenty of room for surprises.

Abstract:The precision cosmological model describing the origin and expansion history of the universe, with observed structure seeded at the inflationary cosmic horizon, demands completion in the ultraviolet and in the infrared. The dynamics of the cosmic horizon also suggests an associated entropy, again requiring a microphysical theory. Recent years have seen enormous progress in understanding the structure of de Sitter space and inflation in string theory, and of cosmological observables captured by quantum field theory and solvable deformations thereof. The resulting models admit ongoing observational tests through measurements of the cosmic microwave background and large-scale structure, as well as through analyses of theoretical consistency by means of thought experiments. This paper, prepared for the TF01 and TF09 conveners of the Snowmass 2021 process, provides a synopsis of this important area, focusing on ongoing developments and opportunities.

Abstract:The 2021-22 High-Energy Physics Community Planning Exercise (a.k.a. ``Snowmass 2021'') was organized by the Division of Particles and Fields of the American Physical Society. Snowmass 2021 was a scientific study that provided an opportunity for the entire U.S. particle physics community, along with its international partners, to identify the most important scientific questions in High Energy Physics for the following decade, with an eye to the decade after that, and the experiments, facilities, infrastructure, and R&D needed to pursue them. This Snowmass summary report synthesizes the lessons learned and the main conclusions of the Community Planning Exercise as a whole and presents a community-informed synopsis of U.S. particle physics at the beginning of 2023. This document, along with the Snowmass reports from the various subfields, will provide input to the 2023 Particle Physics Project Prioritization Panel (P5) subpanel of the U.S. High-Energy Physics Advisory Panel (HEPAP), and will help to guide and inform the activity of the U.S. particle physics community during the next decade and beyond.

Abstract:The data storage and data management needs are summarized for the energy frontier, intensity frontier, cosmic frontier, lattice field theory, perturbative QCD and accelerator science. The outlook for data storage technologies and costs is then outlined, followed by a summary of the current state of data, software and physics analysis capability preservation. The HEP outlook is summarized, pointing out where future data volumes may strain against what is technologically and financially feasible. Finally recommendations for areas of particular attention and action are made.

Abstract:The US particle physics community planning exercise (a.k.a. Snowmass) is organized every 7 to 9 years to provide a forum for discussions among the entire particle physics community to develop a scientific vision for the future of particle physics in the U.S. and its international partners. The Snowmass 21 Accelerator Frontier activities include discussions on high-energy hadron and lepton colliders, high-intensity beams for neutrino research and for Physics Beyond Colliders, accelerator technologies, science, education and outreach as well as the progress of core accelerator technologies, including RF, magnets, targets and sources. Here we summarize the Snowmass 21 discussions on future HEP accelerator facilities.

Abstract:We start by remarks on the scientific and societal context of today's theoretical physics. Major classes of models for physics to be explored at the LHC are then reviewed. This leads us to propose an LHC timeline and a list of potential effects on theoretical physics and the society. We then explore three conceptual questions connected with the LHC physics: symmetry (and symmetry breaking), effective field theory, and fine tuning.
