Abstract:The Physics of Hard Sphere Experiment has two incarnations: the first as a scattering and rheology experiment on STS-83 and STS-94 and the second as a microscopy experiment to be performed in the future on LMM on the space station. Here we describe some of the quantitative and qualitative results from previous flights on the dynamics of crystallization in microgravity and especially the observed interaction of growing crystallites in the coexistance regime. To clarify rheological measurements we also present ground based experiments on the low shear rate viscosity and diffusion coefficient of several hard sphere experiments at high volume fraction. We also show how these experiments will be performed with confocal microscopy and laser tweezers in our lab and as preparation for the phAse II experiments on LMM. One of the main aims of the microscopy study will be the control of colloidal samples using an array of applied fields with an eye toward colloidal architectures. Temperature gradients, electric field gradients, laser tweezers and a variety of switchable imposed surface patterns are used toward this control.
A Possible Mathematical Structure for Physics

Abstract:The relationship between mathematics and physics has long been an area of interest and speculation. Subscribing to the recent definition by Tegmark, we present a mathematical structure involving the only division rings - the real, $\mathbb{R}$, the complex, $\mathbb{C}$, and the quaternion, $\mathbb{H}$ - known to meet the requirements of a mathematical description of our universe. The known forces and particle structure, in terms of families and color, can be associated with natural relationships within that structure. A "toy" scientific theory - based on the proposed mathematical structure - is presented to illustrate its applicability. It is shown how parity and time reversal invariance are broken. Two relevant predictions come from the formalism. First, there are no gravity waves and second, matter comes in three varieties, one of which is "dark" in the sense that it is oblivious to electromagnetic interactions.

Abstract:Several recent developments point to the fact that rational maps from n-punctured spheres to the null cone of D-dimensional momentum space provide a natural language for describing the scattering of massless particles in D dimensions. In this paper we identify and study equations relating the kinematic invariants s(ab) and the puncture locations sigma(c), which we call the scattering equations. We provide an inductive algorithm in the number of particles for their solutions and prove a remarkable property which we call Kawai-Lewellen-Tye (KLT) orthogonality. In a nutshell, KLT orthogonality means that "Parke-Taylor" vectors constructed from the solutions to the scattering equations are mutually orthogonal with respect to the KLT bilinear form. We end with comments on possible connections to gauge theory and gravity amplitudes in any dimension and to the high-energy limit of string theory amplitudes.

Abstract:Since 2016 the group known as `The Big Bang Collective' has brought High Energy Physics outreach to music and culture festivals across Europe, successfully engaging with and inspiring audiences who may never have sought this out themselves through activities in their `Physics Pavilions'. The US has a very long, glorious tradition of music festivals, and an incredible community of sci-comm engaged physicists, from students to senior staff. With the experience already gained in Europe, The Big Bang Collective believes the time is now ripe to bring their Physics Pavilions to US music festivals.

Abstract:As 2005, the International Year of Physics, comes to an end, two physicists working primarily in geophysical research reflect on how geophysics is not an applied physics. Although geophysics has certainly benefited from progress in physics and sometimes emulated the reductionist program of mainstream physics, it has also educated the physics community about some of the generic behaviors of strongly nonlinear systems. Dramatic examples are the insights we have gained into the ``emergent'' phenomena of chaos, cascading instabilities, turbulence, self-organization, fractal structure, power-law variability, anomalous scaling, threshold dynamics, creep, fracture, and so on. In all of these examples, relatively simple models have been able to explain the recurring features of apparently very complex signals and fields. It appears that the future of the intricate relation between physics and geophysics will be as exciting as its past has been characterized by a mutual fascination. Physics departments in our universities should capitalize on this trend to attract and retain young talent motivated to address problems that really matter for the future of the planet. A pressing topic with huge impact on populations and that is challenging enough for both physics and geophysics communities to work together like never before is the understanding and prediction of extreme events.

Abstract:In the first part of the paper, I give a low-resolution overview of the current state of particle physics - the triumph of the Standard Model and its discontents. I review and re-endorse the remarkably direct and (to me) compelling argument that existing data, properly interpreted, point toward a unified theory of fundamental particle interactions and toward low-energy supersymmetry as the near-term future of high energy physics as a natural science. I then attempt, as requested, some more "visionary" - i.e. even lower resolution - comments about the farther future. In that spirit, I emphasize the continuing importance of condensed matter physics as a source of inspiration and potential application, in particular for expansion of symmetry concepts, and of cosmology as a source of problems, applications, and perhaps ultimately limitations.

Abstract:The theme of the World Conference on Physics Education 2012 is "Context, Culture, and Representations." In this talk I present a brief outline of a theoretical framework that allows us to discuss these issues using a model based in psychology and sociology: the resources framework. The framework brings together a model of individual behavior based on brain function with a model of how the behavior of an individual is controlled by the individual's perception of the social context they find themselves in. This control process is the process I refer to as "framing". In the paper I give three experiments that the reader can carry out for themselves that illustrate the basic principles of the framework. I then discuss a number of specific examples showing how framing can have powerful effects leading to context dependence and cultural responses at a variety of levels and grain sizes. One such is the impact of differences between the epistemological stances of physics and biology on the creation of a reformed physics class for biology students.

Abstract:Physics students spend the early part of their training attending physics and mathematics lectures, solving problem sets, and experimenting in laboratory courses. The program is typically intensive and fairly rigid. They have little opportunity to follow their own curiosity or apply their knowledge. There have been many attempts to address this deficiency, specifically through outreach activities.1–23 For example, since 1984 Clint Sprott (University of Wisconsin) hosts a physics show entitled “The Wonders of Physics!” Dressed up as a circus director and assisted by students, Professor Sprott presents entertaining and educating experiments to a regularly packed auditorium of all age groups.5 This was in turn inspired by the “Chemistry is Fun” presentations of Basam Shakhashiri (University of Wisconsin), where the students are also involved.6

Abstract:Abstract The rich body of physical theories defines the foundation of our understanding of the world. Its mathematical formulation is based on classical Aristotelian (binary) logic. In the philosophy of science the ambiguities, paradoxes, and the possibility of subjective interpretations of facts have challenged binary logic, leading, among other developments, to Gotthard Günther’s theory of polycontexturality (often also termed ’transclassical logic’). Günther’s theory explains how observers with subjective perception can become aware of their own subjectivity and provides means to describe contradicting or even paradox observations in a logically sound formalism. Here we summarize the formalism behind Günther’s theory and apply it to two well-known examples from physics where different observers operate in distinct and only locally valid logical systems. Using polycontextural logic we show how the emerging awareness of these limitations of logical systems entails the design of mathematical transformations, which then become an integral part of the theory. In our view, this approach offers a novel perspective on the structure of physical theories and, at the same time, emphasizes the relevance of the theory of polycontexturality in modern sciences.

Abstract:If a cat, a cannonball, and an economics textbook are all dropped from the same height, they fall to the ground with exactly the same acceleration under the influence of gravity. This equality of gravitational accelerations of different things is one of the most accurately tested laws of physics. That law, however, tells us little about cats, cannonballs, or economics. This lecture expands on this theme to address the question of what features of our world are predicted by a fundamental ``theory of everything'' governing the regularities exhibited universally by all physical systems. This may consist of two parts: a dynamical law governing regularities in time (e.g superstring theory) and a law of cosmological initial condition governing mostly regularities in space (e.g. Hawking's no-boundary initial condition). The lecture concludes that: (1) ``A theory of everything'' is not a theory of everything in a quantum mechanical universe. (2) If the laws are short enough to be discoverable then they are probably too short to predict everything. (3) The regularities of human history, economics, biology, geology, etc are consistent with the fundamental laws of physics but do not follow from them. Abstract:Despite its amazing quantitative successes and contributions to revolutionary technologies, physics currently faces many unsolved mysteries ranging from the meaning of quantum mechanics to the nature of the dark energy that will determine the future of the Universe. It is clearly prohibitive for the general reader, and even the best informed physicists, to follow the vast number of technical papers published in the thousands of specialized journals. For this reason, we have asked the leading experts across many of the most important areas of physics to summarise their global assessment of some of the most important issues. In lieu of an extremely long abstract summarising the contents, we invite the reader to look at the section headings and their authors, and then to indulge in a feast of stimulating topics spanning the current frontiers of fundamental physics from 'The Future of Physics' by William D Phillips and 'What characterises topological effects in physics?' by Gerard 't Hooft through the contributions of the widest imaginable range of world leaders in their respective areas. This paper is presented as a preface to exciting developments by senior and young scientists in the years that lie ahead, and a complement to the less authoritative popular accounts by journalists.

Abstract:Spin is a beautiful concept that plays an ever important role in modern physics. In this talk, I start with a discussion of the origin of spin, and then turn to three themes in which spin has been crucial in subatomic physics: a lab to explore physics beyond the standard model, a tool to measure physical observables that are hard to obtain otherwise, a probe to unravel nonperturbative QCD. I conclude with some remarks on a world without spin.

Abstract:Defining interdisciplinary physics today requires first a reformulation of what is physics today, which in turn calls for clarifying what makes a physicist. This assessment results from my forty year journey arguing and fighting to build sociophysics. My view on interdisciplinary physics has thus evolved jumping repeatedly to opposite directions before settling down to the following claim: today physics is what is done by physicists who handle a problem the "physicist's way". However the training of physicists should stay restricted to inert matter. Yet adding a focus on the universality of the physicist approach as a generic path to investigate a topic. Consequently, interdisciplinary physics should become a cabinet of curiosities including an incubator. The cabinet of curiosities would welcome all one shots papers related to any kind of object provided it is co-authored at least by one physicist. Otherwise the paper should uses explicitly technics from physics. In case a topic gets many papers, it would be moved to the incubator to foster the potential emergence of a new appropriate subfield of physics. A process illustrated by the subsection social physics in Frontiers in physics.

Abstract:I give my perspective on promising directions for high energy physics in coming years. 1 The Standard Model: Glory and Discontents 1. Our standard model, or core theory, understood to consist of the SU(3)×SU(2)×U(1) gauge theory of strong and electroweak interactions, together with minimally coupled Einstein gravity – the gauge theory of local Lorentz invariance – is a glorious achievement. It provides a firm foundation for chemistry, astrophysics, and all practical forms of engineering. It justifies and fulfills the great reductionist program of understanding the physical world based on precise mathematical understanding of the interactions among a few basic building-blocks. Consider, for example, the direct numerical solution of QCD. Here there are no uncontrolled approximations, no perturbation theory, no cutoff, and no room for fudge-factors. A handful of parameters, inserted into a highly constrained theory of extraordinary symmetry, either will or won’t account for the incredible wealth of measured phenomena in the strong interaction. And it certainly appears that they do.
