Abstract:The bulk of this paper centers around the tension between confinement and freedom in QCD. I discuss how it can be understood heuristically as a manifestation of self-adhesive glue and how it fits within the larger contexts of energy-time uncertainty and $\textit{real virtuality}$. I discuss the possible emergence of $\textit{treeons}$ as a tangible ingredient of (at least) pure gluon $SU(3)$. I propose $\textit{flux channeling}$ as a method to address that and allied questions about triality flux numerically, and indicate how to implement it for electric and magnetic flux in material systems. That bulk is framed with broad-stroke, necessarily selective sketches of the past and possible future of strong interaction physics. At the end, I've added an expression of gratitude for my formative experience at the Erice school, in 1973.

Abstract:We analyse the implications of the closure of the physical for experiments in the scientific study of consciousness when all the details are considered, especially how measurement results relate to physical events. It turns out that the closure of the physical has surprising implications that conflict with scientific practice. These implications point to a fundamental flaw in the paradigm underlying many experiments conducted to date and pose a challenge to any research programme that aims to ground a physical functionalist or identity-based understanding of consciousness on empirical observations.

Abstract:We consider some implications of confinement starting from the basic observation that cross-sections for the production of colored asymptotic states, such as free quarks and gluons, from color singlet initial states must be zero if QCD is to be confining. We discuss two pictures of confinement: the failure of the cluster decomposition property and the absence of a pole at timelike momenta in the propagator of a confined particle. We use QCD-based models as a framework to relate the failure of the cluster decomposition property to other ideas, such as the role of a nonzero gluon condensate. Our primary interest is to address the question of the absence of a mass pole through a study of model Schwinger-Dyson equations. These equations contain some of the dynamical information that is present in the study of the cluster decomposition property. We discuss the problems with this idea and its study using the Schwinger-Dyson equations.

Abstract:QCD is now a mature theory, and it is possible to begin to view its place in the conceptual universe of physics with an appropriate perspective. There is a certain irony in the achievements of QCD. For the problems which initially drove its development — specifically, the desire to understand in detail the force that holds atomic nuclei together, and later the desire to calculate the spectrum of hadrons and their interactions — only limited insight has been achieved. However, I shall argue that QCD is actually more special and important a theory than one had any right to anticipate. In many ways, the importance of the solution transcends that of the original motivating problems. After elaborating on these quasiphilosophical remarks, I discuss two current frontiers of physics that illustrate the continuing vitality of the ideas. The recent wealth of beautiful precision experiments measuring the parameters of the standard model have made it possible to consider the unification of couplings in unprecedented quantitative detail. One central result emerging from these developments is a tantalizing hint of virtual supersymmetry. The possibility of phase transitions in matter at temperatures of order ~102 MeV, governed by QCD dynamics, is of interest from several points of view. Besides having a certain intrinsic grandeur, the question “Does the nature of matter change qualitatively, as it is radically heated?” is important for cosmology, relevant to planned high-energy heavy-ion collision experiments, and provides a promising arena for numerical simulations of QCD. Recent numerical work seems to be consistent with expectations suggested by renormalization group analysis of the potential universality classes of the QCD chiral phase transition; specifically, that the transition is second-order for two species of massless quarks but first order otherwise. There is an interesting possibility of long-range correlations in heavy ion collisions due to the creation of large regions of the misaligned chiral condensate. Finally, at the end, there is a brief discussion on the relation between scaling violations and running of the coupling. Some statements made later in the conference seemed to indicate that the relationship between these concepts is commonly misunderstood, so I’m smuggling this bit in even though it wasn’t part of the original talk.

Abstract:This is a summary paper of the research activities presented in the magnetic fusion EXperiment Confinement (EX-C) session at the 29th International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Fusion Energy Conference (FEC 2023), London, United Kingdom, 16–21 October 2023. This session covers a wide range of topics related to confinement and transport of magnetic confinement plasmas. The key issues addressed in the presentations include: (i) scenario development, (ii) turbulent transport and L-H transition physics, (iii) isotope effects on confinement, (iv) impurity transport and impact of impurities on confinement, (v) influence of fueling and energetic particles on confinement, and (vi) improvements in experimental capabilities. Highlighted results presented in those manuscripts are summarized in this paper.

Abstract:Determinations of the gluon propagator in the continuum and in lattice simulations are compared. A systematic truncation procedure for the quark Dyson-Schwinger and bound state Bethe-Salpeter equations is described. The procedure ensures the flavour-octet axial-vector Ward identity is satisfied order-by-order, thereby guaranteeing the preservation of Goldstone's theorem; and identifies a mechanism that simultaneously ensures the absence of diquarks in QCD and their presence in QCD$^{N_c=2}$, where the colour singlet diquark is the ``baryon'' of the theory.
Towards confinement using black holes

Abstract:The confinement of quarks is analyzed by establishing a correspondence between the effective actions inside a black hole and the QCD action, formulated as a scalar field theory in the Carrollian regime. We first demonstrate that both QCD (in the instanton-dominance limit) and the interior of a black hole can be described at one-loop as the effective action of a soliton in the Carrollian limit. At one-loop, QCD confinement is shown to be entirely analogous to confinement within a black hole, with the event horizon acting as the hadron radius. Higher-order corrections to the effective action do not destabilize the solitons but may produce subtle observable effects, such as deconfinement or a partial resolution to the information loss problem.

By traversing the narratives of writers, wanderers, mariners, prisoners, recluses, and soldiers, this book offers writers and readers a chance to re-think the parameters of their own circumstances. Exploring a broad range of themes, from writing during a pandemic (COVID-19), travel writing, writing from incarceration, and writing within war and conflict zones, each chapter will look at historical contexts as well as contemporary examples within these themes to demonstrate the rich history and current relevance of writing during confinement and isolation. The book also contains tips and exercises to help develop writing skills during restrictive circumstances. Abstract:This article takes as its starting point the similar, yet differing, experiences of hearing voices among prisoners in Myanmar. It discusses why the experience of hearing voices described by prisoners is regarded as an occasion to share compassion when it occurs during meditation retreats and as torture when it occurs in solitary confinement. The article uses the concept of liminality to make sense of variations in these spiritual experiences and focuses on three factors: the presence or absence of communitas; a master of ceremony or other guidance; and whether the experiences take place at the volition of the person or is forced upon him. This leads to the conclusion that solitary confinement, due to its forced nature and the absence of communitas and guidance, represents a situation in which the prisoner is at risk of prolonged liminality and social harm which can unhinge him from his interrelational self.

Abstract:Invited talk at the EPS-HEPP meeting in Krakow, July 2009. My first thought, and presumably the default expectation, was that I'd talk in a general way about the grandeur of high energy physics and the exciting future we anticipate, especially with LHC coming on line. But an unfortunate byproduct of the delays at LHC and the slow pace of other experiments is that I've already done that sort of thing many times, as have many other conference embellishers, and the ritual is getting stale. So I'll speed through the litany, and then indulge myself by advertising some ideas I've been fond of, some for quite a while, that I think are interesting, promising, and not as well known as they should be.

Abstract:Profound changes in international geopolitics and national policies, as well as global economic restructuring, and technological and communicational development have occurred since Chinatown first emerged. With the rapid pace of globalizing economy, increasing flows of population, commodities, information, and financial resources across the Pacific Rim – particularly in the last two decades – it is imperative that we reexamine the international migration patterns of Chinese population and reconceptualize the resulting Chinese settlement forms in the globalization era. This article attempts to serve such purposes by briefly reviewing the debate centered around historical and contemporary Chinatowns; discussing the impacts of societal and structural factors on Chinese immigration and settlement; presenting a spectrum of contemporary Chinese settlement forms in the United States, and highlighting some key characteristics. The article ends with brief discussion and conclusion sections that summarize some issues in contemporary Chinese community studies.
