Abstract:Explicit representations for the Hermite interpolation and their derivatives of any order are provided. Furthermore, suppose that the interpolated function f has continuous derivatives of sufficiently high order on some sufficiently small neighborhood of a given point x and any group of nodes are also given on the neighborhood. If the derivatives of any order of the Hermite interpolation polynomial of f at the point x are applied to approximating the corresponding derivatives of the function f ( x ), the asymptotic representations for the remainder are presented.

Abstract:In a seminal paper, Sarason generalized some classical interpolation problems for H(infinity) functions on the unit disc to problems concerning lifting onto H(2) of an operator T that is defined on K=H(2)circle minus phi H(2) (phi is an inner function) and commutes with the (compressed) shift S. In particular, he showed that interpolants (i.e., f is an element of H(infinity) such that f(S)=T) having norm equal to parallel to T parallel to exist, and that in certain cases such an f is unique and can be expressed as a fraction f=b/a with a, b is an element of K. In this paper, we study interpolants that are such fractions of K functions and are bounded in norm by 1 (assuming that parallel to T parallel to<1, in which case they always exist). We parameterize the collection of all such pairs (a, b)is an element of K x K and show that each interpolant of this type can be determined as the unique minimum of a convex functional. Our motivation stems from the relevance of classical interpolation to circuit theory, systems theory, and signal processing, where phi is typically a finite Blaschke product, and where the quotient representation is a physically meaningful complexity constraint.

Abstract:We characterize simply interpolating sequences (also known as onto interpolating sequences) for complete Pick spaces. We show that a sequence is simply interpolating if and only if it is strongly separated. This answers a question of Agler and M c Carthy. Moreover, we show that in many important examples of complete Pick spaces, including weighted Dirichlet spaces on the unit disc and the Drury–Arveson space in finitely many variables, simple interpolation does not imply multiplier interpolation. In fact, in those spaces, we construct simply interpolating sequences that generate infinite measures, and uniformly separated sequences that are not multiplier interpolating.

Abstract:In a well-known paper (1), Sarason generalized some classical interpolation problems for H1 functions on the unit disc with norm not greater than one to problems concerning operators on a coinvariant subspace K = H2 H 2, where is an inner function. These operators have norm not greater than one, and, among his results, he studied the structure of gener- alized interpolants for operators having norm one. In a variety of interesting cases, there is a unique such interpolant, which is given by the quotient of functions in K. Following (2), in this talk we consider the case where the operator is a strict contraction. There turns out to be an innite number of interpolants that are such quotients, and we give a complete parameteriza- tion of these. Each such interpolant can be obtained as the unique minimizer to a strictly convex functional. Our methodology follows that of (3, 4) (also see references therein) and is inspired by the engineering applications of classical interpolation problems in circuits, systems and signal processing, cases which all deal with the situation where is a nite Blaschke product and in which the quotient representation is physically natural. We give several examples of such applications. We also demonstrate that the case when is a singular inner function has a natural systems-theoretical interpretation.

Abstract:In this article, we study the role of invariant distances in the Pick interpolation problem. Given a Carathéodory hyperbolic domain $\Omega$ in some $\mathbb{C}^m$, we have introduced a notion of an invariant object that gives a necessary and sufficient condition for any Pick interpolation problem to be solvable on $\Omega$. This invariant object plays the same role as that of Carathéodory pseudodistance in the two-point Pick interpolation problem. Furthermore, a full description of the invariant object is given when $\Omega$ is the open unit disc.

Abstract:Synopsis We consider interpolation by piecewise polynomials, where the interpolation conditions are on certain derivatives of the function at certain points, specified by a finite incidence matrix E . Similarly the allowable discontinuities of the piecewise polynomials are specified by a finite incidence matrix F . We first find necessary conditions on ( E , F ) for the problem to be poised, that is to have a unique solution for any given data. The main result gives sufficient conditions on ( E , F ) for the problem to be poised, generalising a well-known result of Atkinson and Sharma. To this end we prove some results involving estimates of the numbers of zeros of the relevant piecewise polynomials.

Abstract:In the papers by Byrnes et al. (2006 and 2001), a theory for degree-constrained analytic interpolation was developed in terms of the minimizers of certain convex entropy functionals. In the present paper, we introduce and study relevant inverse problems. More specifically, we answer the following two questions. First, given a function f which satisfies specified interpolation conditions, when is it that f can be obtained as the minimizer of a suitably chosen entropy functional? Second, given a function g, when does there exist a suitably entropy functional so that the unique minimizer f which is subject to interpolation constraints also satisfies |f| = |g| on the unit circle. The theory and answers to these questions suggest an approach to identifying interpolants of a given degree and of a given approximate shape
Jump-preserving polynomial interpolation in non-manifold polyhedra

Abstract:We construct a piecewise-polynomial interpolant $u \mapsto \Pi u$ for functions $u:\Omega \setminus \Gamma \to \mathbb{R}$, where $\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^d$ is a Lipschitz polyhedron and $\Gamma \subset \Omega$ is a possibly non-manifold $(d-1)$-dimensional hypersurface. This interpolant enjoys approximation properties in relevant Sobolev norms, as well as a set of additional algebraic properties, namely, $\Pi^2 = \Pi$, and $\Pi$ preserves homogeneous boundary values and jumps of its argument on $\Gamma$. As an application, we obtain a bounded discrete right-inverse of the "jump" operator across $\Gamma$, and an error estimate for a Galerkin scheme to solve a second-order elliptic PDE in $\Omega$ with a prescribed jump across $\Gamma$.

Abstract:In this paper, we obtain two interpolation theorems on convex-set valued Lebesgue spaces, which generalize the Marcinkiewicz interpolation theorem and Riesz-Thorin interpolation theorem on classical Lebesgue spaces, respectively. Abstract:Let $H$ be a separable complex Hilbert space. A conjugate-linear map $C:H\to H$ is a conjugation if it is an involutive isometry. In this paper, we consider the following interpolation problems: Let $\{x_i\}_{i\in I}$ and $\{y_i\}_{i\in I}$ be two orthogonal sets of vectors in $H$, and let $N$ and $\{N_k\}_{k\in K}$ be normal operators such that the $N_k$'s mutually commute. Then, under which conditions does there exist a conjugation $C$ on $H$ such that (a) $Cx_i=y_i$ and $CN_kC=N_k^*$ for all $i\in I$ and $k\in K$; or (b) $Cx_i=y_i$, for every $i\in I$, and $CNC=-N^*$. Using the spectral projections of normal operators, we provide complete answers to problems (a) and (b). As an application, we characterize hyperinvariant subspaces of normal operators using conjugations. Additionally, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of solutions to certain equations in $L^{\infty}(\mu)$.

Abstract:We develop a discrete framework for the interpolation of Banach spaces, which contains the well-known real and complex interpolation methods, but also more recent methods like the Rademacher, $\gamma$- and $\ell^q$-interpolation methods. Our framework is based on a sequential structure imposed on a Banach space, which allows us to deduce properties of interpolation methods from properties of sequential structures. Our framework has a formulation modelled after both the real and the complex interpolation methods. This enables us to extend various results, previously known only for either the real or the complex interpolation method, to all interpolation methods that fit into our framework. As applications, we prove an interpolation result for analytic operator families and an interpolation result for intersections.

Abstract:In the recent article , a theory for complexity-constrained interpolation of contractive functions is developed. In particular, it is shown that any such interpolant may be obtained as the unique minimizer of a (convex) weighted entropy gain. In this technical note we study this optimization problem in detail and describe how the minimizer depends on weight selection and on interpolation conditions. We first show that, if, for a sequence of interpolants, the values of the entropy gain of the interpolants converge to the optimum, then the interpolants converge in H 2 , but not in H infin . This result is then used to describe the asymptotic behavior of the interpolant as an interpolation point approaches the boundary of the domain of analyticity. For loop shaping to specifications in control design, it might at first seem natural to place strategically additional interpolation points close to the boundary. However, our results indicate that such a strategy will have little effect on the shape. Another consequence of our results relates to model reduction based on minimum-entropy principles, where one should avoid placing interpolation points too close to the boundary.
