Abstract:We investigate the Pick problem for the polydisk and unit ball using dual algebra techniques. Some factorization results for Bergman spaces are used to describe a Pick theorem for any bounded region in $\mathbb{C}^d$.

Abstract:In this article, we study the role of invariant distances in the Pick interpolation problem. Given a Carathéodory hyperbolic domain $\Omega$ in some $\mathbb{C}^m$, we have introduced a notion of an invariant object that gives a necessary and sufficient condition for any Pick interpolation problem to be solvable on $\Omega$. This invariant object plays the same role as that of Carathéodory pseudodistance in the two-point Pick interpolation problem. Furthermore, a full description of the invariant object is given when $\Omega$ is the open unit disc.

Deformations of complete Pick spaces

Abstract:Motivated by the work of Pandey, Ofek, and Shalit on the one hand and deformation theory on the other, we study the Grassmannian of $n$-dimensional multiplier-coinvariant subspaces of the Drury-Arveson space. We show that this space admits a natural map to the symmetrized polyball that induces an isomorphism between the configuration space of $n$ points in the ball and the subspace of projection onto spaces spanned by $n$ distinct kernels. We discuss the tautological bundle on our Grassmannian and the corresponding operator algebra bundle. We construct examples of bundles of complete Pick spaces from homogeneous hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{B}_d$. Along with these bundles, we construct examples of Cowen-Doulas tuples of operators from the compressed Arveson $d$-shift.

Abstract:We prove a high order Schwarz-Pick lemma for mappings between unit balls in complex spaces in terms of the Bergman metric. From this lemma, Schwarz-Pick estimates for partial derivatives of arbitrary order of mappings are deduced.

Abstract:We construct a piecewise-polynomial interpolant $u \mapsto \Pi u$ for functions $u:\Omega \setminus \Gamma \to \mathbb{R}$, where $\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^d$ is a Lipschitz polyhedron and $\Gamma \subset \Omega$ is a possibly non-manifold $(d-1)$-dimensional hypersurface. This interpolant enjoys approximation properties in relevant Sobolev norms, as well as a set of additional algebraic properties, namely, $\Pi^2 = \Pi$, and $\Pi$ preserves homogeneous boundary values and jumps of its argument on $\Gamma$. As an application, we obtain a bounded discrete right-inverse of the "jump" operator across $\Gamma$, and an error estimate for a Galerkin scheme to solve a second-order elliptic PDE in $\Omega$ with a prescribed jump across $\Gamma$.

Abstract:We consider a specific scheme of multivariate Birkhoff polynomial interpolation. Our samples are derivatives of various orders kj at fixed points vj along fixed straight lines through vj in directions uj, under the following assumption: the total number of sampled derivatives of order k,k=0,1,… is equal to the dimension of the space homogeneous polynomials of degree k. We show that this scheme is regular for general directions. Specifically this scheme is regular independent of the position of the interpolation nodes. In the planar case, we show that this scheme is regular for distinct directions.Next we prove a “Birkhoff-Remez” inequality for our sampling scheme extended to larger sampling sets. It bounds the norm of the interpolation polynomial through the norm of the samples, in terms of the geometry of the sampling set.

Abstract:The fundamental theorem on commutant lifting due to Sarason does not carry over to the setting of the polydisc. This paper presents two classifications of commutant lifting in several variables. The first classification links the lifting problem to the contractivity of certain linear functionals. The second one transforms it into nonnegative real numbers. We also solve the Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation problem for bounded analytic functions on the polydisc. Along the way, we solve a perturbation problem for bounded analytic functions. Commutant lifting and interpolation on the polydisc solve two well-known problems in Hilbert function space theory.

Abstract:Positive real rational functions play a central role in both deterministic and stochastic linear systems theory, as well as in circuit synthesis, spectral analysis, and speech processing. For this reason, results about positive real transfer functions and their realizations typically have many applications and manifestations.In this paper, we study certain manifolds and submanifolds of positive real transfer functions, describing a fundamental geometric duality between filtering and Nevanlinna Pick interpolation. Not surprisingly, then, this duality, while interesting in its own right, has several corollaries which provide solutions and insight into some very interesting and intensely researched problems. One of these is the problem of parameterizing all rational solutions of bounded degree of the Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation problem, which plays a central role in robust control, and for which the duality theorem yields a complete solution. In this paper, we shall describe the duality theorem, which we motivate in terms of both the interpolation problem and a fast algorithm for Kalman filtering, viewed as a nonlinear dynamical system on the space of positive real transfer functions.We also outline a new proof of the recent solution to the rational Nevanlinna Pick interpolation problem, using an algebraic topological generalization of Hadamard's global inverse function theorem.

Abstract:We study a family of polytopes and their duals, that appear in various optimization problems as the unit balls for certain norms. These two families interpolate between the hypercube, the unit ball for the $\infty$-norm, and its dual cross-polytope, the unit ball for the $1$-norm. We give combinatorial and geometric properties of both families of polytopes such as their $f$-vector, their volume, and the volume of their boundary.

Integer Feasibility of Random Polytopes

Abstract:We study integer programming instances over polytopes P(A,b)={x:Ax<=b} where the constraint matrix A is random, i.e., its entries are i.i.d. Gaussian or, more generally, its rows are i.i.d. from a spherically symmetric distribution. The radius of the largest inscribed ball is closely related to the existence of integer points in the polytope. We show that for m=2^O(sqrt{n}), there exist constants c_0 < c_1 such that with high probability, random polytopes are integer feasible if the radius of the largest ball contained in the polytope is at least c_1sqrt{log(m/n)}; and integer infeasible if the largest ball contained in the polytope is centered at (1/2,...,1/2) and has radius at most c_0sqrt{log(m/n)}. Thus, random polytopes transition from having no integer points to being integer feasible within a constant factor increase in the radius of the largest inscribed ball. We show integer feasibility via a randomized polynomial-time algorithm for finding an integer point in the polytope. Our main tool is a simple new connection between integer feasibility and linear discrepancy. We extend a recent algorithm for finding low-discrepancy solutions (Lovett-Meka, FOCS '12) to give a constructive upper bound on the linear discrepancy of random matrices. By our connection between discrepancy and integer feasibility, this upper bound on linear discrepancy translates to the radius lower bound that guarantees integer feasibility of random polytopes.

Abstract:We use (versions of) the von Neumann inequality for Hilbert space contractions to prove several Schwarz-Pick inequalities. Specifically, we derive an alternate proof for a multi-point Schwarz-Pick inequality by Beardon and Minda, along with a generalized version for operators. Connections with model spaces and Peschl's invariant derivatives are established. Finally, Schwarz-Pick inequalities for analytic functions on polydisks and for higher order derivatives are discussed. An enhanced version of the Schwarz-Pick lemma, using the notion of distinguished variety, is obtained for the bidisk.

Abstract:We characterize simply interpolating sequences (also known as onto interpolating sequences) for complete Pick spaces. We show that a sequence is simply interpolating if and only if it is strongly separated. This answers a question of Agler and M c Carthy. Moreover, we show that in many important examples of complete Pick spaces, including weighted Dirichlet spaces on the unit disc and the Drury–Arveson space in finitely many variables, simple interpolation does not imply multiplier interpolation. In fact, in those spaces, we construct simply interpolating sequences that generate infinite measures, and uniformly separated sequences that are not multiplier interpolating.

Abstract:We consider the problem of uniform sampling of points on an algebraic variety. Specifically, we develop a randomized algorithm that, given a small set of multivariate polynomials over a sufficiently large finite field, produces a common zero of the polynomials almost uniformly at random. The statistical distance between the output distribution of the algorithm and the uniform distribution on the set of common zeros is polynomially small in the field size, and the running time of the algorithm is polynomial in the description of the polynomials and their degrees provided that the number of the polynomials is a constant.

Abstract:We show that a two variable Nevanlinna representation for rational Pick functions can be viewed as the Cauchy transform of a simple undirected graph with variables assigned to the vertices. We give relations between representing functions of certain products of such graphs by way of Schur complements applied to adjacency matrices. We also study the connection between the structure of the graph and the regularity of the representing function at a boundary singularity.

Abstract:Over the last several years, a new theory of Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation with complexity constraint has been developed for scalar interpolants. In this paper we generalize this theory to the matrix-valued case, also allowing for multiple interpolation points. We parameterize a class of interpolants consisting of "most interpolants" of no higher degree than the central solution in terms of spectral zeros. This is a complete parameterization, and for each choice of interpolant we provide a convex optimization problem for determining it. This is derived in the context of duality theory of mathematical programming. To solve the convex optimization problem, we employ a homotopy continuation technique previously developed for the scalar case. These results can be applied to many classes of engineering problems, and, to illustrate this, we provide some examples. In particular, we apply our method to a benchmark problem in multivariate robust control. By constructing a controller satisfying all design specifications but having only half the McMillan degree of conventional H/sup /spl infin// controllers, we demonstrate the advantage of the proposed method.

Abstract:This paper considers the extension of classical Lagrange interpolation in one real or complex variable to "polynomials of one quaternionic variable". To do this we develop some aspects of the theory of such polynomials. We then give a number of related multivariate polynomial interpolation schemes for ${\mathbb{R}}^4$ and ${\mathbb{C}}^2$ with good geometric properties, and some aspects of least interpolation and of Kergin interpolation.

Abstract:In a seminal paper, Sarason generalized some classical interpolation problems for H(infinity) functions on the unit disc to problems concerning lifting onto H(2) of an operator T that is defined on K=H(2)circle minus phi H(2) (phi is an inner function) and commutes with the (compressed) shift S. In particular, he showed that interpolants (i.e., f is an element of H(infinity) such that f(S)=T) having norm equal to parallel to T parallel to exist, and that in certain cases such an f is unique and can be expressed as a fraction f=b/a with a, b is an element of K. In this paper, we study interpolants that are such fractions of K functions and are bounded in norm by 1 (assuming that parallel to T parallel to<1, in which case they always exist). We parameterize the collection of all such pairs (a, b)is an element of K x K and show that each interpolant of this type can be determined as the unique minimum of a convex functional. Our motivation stems from the relevance of classical interpolation to circuit theory, systems theory, and signal processing, where phi is typically a finite Blaschke product, and where the quotient representation is a physically meaningful complexity constraint.
