Abstract:We prove a parametric jet interpolation theorem for symplectic holomorphic automorphisms of $\mathbb{C}^{2n}$ with parameters in a Stein space. Moreover, we provide an example of an unavoidable set for symplectic holomorphic maps.

Abstract:Algorithms to generate a triangular or a quadrilateral interpolant with G 1 -continuity are given in this paper for arbitrary scattered data with associated normal vectors over a prescribed triangular or quadrilateral decomposition. The interpolants are constructed with a general method to generate surfaces from moving Bézier curves under geometric constraints. With the algorithm, we may obtain interpolants in complete symbolic parametric forms, leading to a fast computation of the interpolant. A dynamic interpolation solid modelling software package DISM is implemented based on the algorithm which can be used to generate and manipulate solid objects in an interactive way.
Hyperbolicity of generic hypersurfaces of polynomial degree via Green-Griffiths jet differentials

Abstract:We give a new version of a recent result of B{é}rczi-Kirwan, proving the Kobayashi and Green-Griffiths-Lang conjectures for generic hypersurfaces in the projective space , with a polynomial lower bound on the degree. Our strategy again relies on Siu's technique of slanted vector fields and the use of holomorphic Morse inequalities to prove the existence of a jet differential equation with a negative twist -- however, instead of using a space of invariant jet differentials, we base our computations on the classical Green-Griffiths jet spaces.

A Parametric Interpolation Framework for 1D Scalar Conservation Laws using the Equal Area Principle

Abstract:In this paper we develop a novel framework for numerically solving scalar conservation laws in one space dimension. Utilizing the method of characteristics in conjunction with the equal area principle we develop an approach where the weak solution is obtained purely as the solution of a parametric interpolation problem. As this framework hinges on the validity of the equal area principle, we provide a rigorous discussion of the equal area principle and show that, indeed, the equal area principle is equivalent to the Rankine-Hugoniot condition, within the specific context studied in this paper. Combining these results with properties of the characteristic equations yields the desired setting to define the equivalent parametric interpolation problem. We conclude by applying this framework to Burgers' equation and show how one obtains machine precision in the shock position when the initial condition can be represented exactly in the chosen space of parametric polynomials.

Jump-preserving polynomial interpolation in non-manifold polyhedra

Abstract:We construct a piecewise-polynomial interpolant $u \mapsto \Pi u$ for functions $u:\Omega \setminus \Gamma \to \mathbb{R}$, where $\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^d$ is a Lipschitz polyhedron and $\Gamma \subset \Omega$ is a possibly non-manifold $(d-1)$-dimensional hypersurface. This interpolant enjoys approximation properties in relevant Sobolev norms, as well as a set of additional algebraic properties, namely, $\Pi^2 = \Pi$, and $\Pi$ preserves homogeneous boundary values and jumps of its argument on $\Gamma$. As an application, we obtain a bounded discrete right-inverse of the "jump" operator across $\Gamma$, and an error estimate for a Galerkin scheme to solve a second-order elliptic PDE in $\Omega$ with a prescribed jump across $\Gamma$.

Abstract:The famous Erlangen Programme was coined by Felix Klein in 1872 as an algebraic approach allowing to incorporate fixed symmetry groups as the core ingredient for geometric analysis, seeing the chosen symmetries as intrinsic invariance of all objects and tools. This idea was broadened essentially by Elie Cartan in the beginning of the last century, and we may consider (curved) geometries as modelled over certain (flat) Klein's models. The aim of this short survey is to explain carefully the basic concepts and algebraic tools built over several recent decades. We focus on the direct link between the jets of sections of homogeneous bundles and the associated induced modules, allowing us to understand the overall structure of invariant linear differential operators in purely algebraic terms. This allows us to extend essential parts of the concepts and procedures to the curved cases.

Abstract:In this paper, we study symplectic integration of canonical Hamiltonian systems with Jacobi polynomials. The relevant theoretical results of continuous-stage Runge-Kutta methods are revisited firstly and then symplectic methods with Jacobi polynomials will be established. A few numerical experiments are well performed to verify the efficiency of our new methods.

Abstract:This article is devoted to developing a theory for effective kernel interpolation and approximation in a general setting. For a wide class of compact, connected $C^\infty$ Riemannian manifolds, including the important cases of spheres and SO(3), we establish, using techniques involving differential geometry and Lie groups, that the kernels obtained as fundamental solutions of certain partial differential operators generate Lagrange functions that are uniformly bounded and decay away from their center at an algebraic rate, and in certain cases, an exponential rate. An immediate corollary is that the corresponding Lebesgue constants for interpolation as well as for $L_2$ minimization are uniformly bounded with a constant whose only dependence on the set of data sites is reflected in the mesh ratio, which measures the uniformity of the data. The kernels considered here include the restricted surface splines on spheres, as well as surface splines for SO(3), both of which have elementary closed-form representations that are computationally implementable. In addition to obtaining bounded Lebesgue constants in this setting, we also establish a "zeros lemma" for domains on compact Riemannian manifolds -- one that holds in as much generality as the corresponding Euclidean zeros lemma (on Lipschitz domains satisfying interior cone conditions) with constants that clearly demonstrate the influence of the geometry of the boundary (via cone parameters) as well as that of the Riemannian metric.

Abstract:We derive analyticity criteria for explicit error bounds and an exponential rate of convergence of the magic point empirical interpolation method introduced by Barrault et al. (2004). Furthermore, we investigate its application to parametric integration. We find that the method is well-suited to Fourier transforms and has a wide range of applications in such diverse fields as probability and statistics, signal and image processing, physics, chemistry and mathematical finance. To illustrate the method, we apply it to the evaluation of probability densities by parametric Fourier inversion. Our numerical experiments display convergence of exponential order, even in cases where the theoretical results do not apply.

Parameterized Interpolation of Passive Systems

Abstract:We study the tangential interpolation problem for a passive transfer function in standard state-space form. We derive new interpolation conditions based on the computation of a deflating subspace associated with a selection of spectral zeros of a parameterized para-Hermitian transfer function. We show that this technique improves the robustness of the low order model and that it can also be applied to non-passive systems, provided they have sufficiently many spectral zeros in the open right half plane. We analyze the accuracy needed for the computation of the deflating subspace, in order to still have a passive lower order model and we derive a novel selection procedure of spectral zeros in order to obtain low order models with a small approximation error.

Abstract:The interpolation problem is a natural and fundamental question whose roots trace back to ancient Greece. The story is long and rich, with many chapters, and a complete solution has been obtained only recently. Exploring it leads us on a tour through a number of general themes in geometry. This concrete problem motivates fundamental concepts such as moduli spaces and their properties, deformation theory, normal bundles, and more. Questions about smooth objects lead us to consider singular (non-smooth) objects, and in fact these smooth objects are studied by instead focusing on somehow simpler "non-smooth" objects, and then deforming them.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Mathematical Analysis, Volume 56, Issue 5, Page 6731-6767, October 2024. We consider a family of boundary integral operators supported on a collection of parametrically defined bounded Lipschitz boundaries. Consequently, the boundary integral operators themselves also depend on the parametric variables, thus leading to a parameter-to-operator map. The main result of this article is to establish the analytic or holomorphic dependence of said boundary integral operators upon the parametric variables, i.e., of the parameter-to-operator map. As a direct consequence we also establish holomorphic dependence of solutions to boundary integral equations, i.e., holomorphy of the parameter-to-solution map. To this end, we construct a holomorphic extension to complex-valued boundary deformations and investigate the complex Fréchet differentiability of boundary integral operators with respect to each parametric variable. The established parametric holomorphy results have been identified as a key property to overcome the so-called curse of dimensionality in the approximation of parametric maps with distributed, high-dimensional inputs. To demonstrate the applicability of the derived results, we consider as a concrete example the sound-soft Helmholtz acoustic scattering problem and its frequency-robust boundary integral formulations. For this particular application, we explore the consequences of our results in reduced order modelling, Bayesian shape inversion, and the construction of efficient surrogates using artificial neural networks.

Abstract:A parametric geometric modelling method for solution of electromagnetic integral equations that employs piecewise Lagrange polynomials that use only partial interpolation nodes to fit the curved surfaces, other than higher-order Lagrange interpolation that involves all nodes, is proposed. The method has compact formulae for arbitrary order, and is flexible to be combined with curved quadrilateral and triangular basis functions. Its correctness and efficacy are confirmed by applying it to the simulation of rough surface scattering using the modified Sparse-Matrix Canonical-Grid (SMCG) method.
Jet space extensions of infinite-dimensional Hamiltonian systems

Abstract:We analyze infinite-dimensional Hamiltonian systems corresponding to partial differential equations on one-dimensional spatial domains formulated with formally skew-adjoint Hamiltonian operators and nonlinear Hamiltonian density. In various applications, the Hamiltonian density can depend on spatial derivatives of the state such that these systems can not straightforwardly be formulated as boundary port-Hamiltonian system using a Stokes-Dirac structure. In this work, we show that any Hamiltonian system of the above class can be reformulated as a Hamiltonian system on the jet space, in which the Hamiltonian density only depends on the extended state variable itself and not on its derivatives. Consequently, well-known geometric formulations with Stokes- Dirac structures are applicable. Additionally, we provide a similar result for dissipative systems. We illustrate the developed theory by means of the the Boussinesq equation, the dynamics of an elastic rod and the Allen-Cahn equation.

Abstract:We consider a specific scheme of multivariate Birkhoff polynomial interpolation. Our samples are derivatives of various orders kj at fixed points vj along fixed straight lines through vj in directions uj, under the following assumption: the total number of sampled derivatives of order k,k=0,1,… is equal to the dimension of the space homogeneous polynomials of degree k. We show that this scheme is regular for general directions. Specifically this scheme is regular independent of the position of the interpolation nodes. In the planar case, we show that this scheme is regular for distinct directions.Next we prove a “Birkhoff-Remez” inequality for our sampling scheme extended to larger sampling sets. It bounds the norm of the interpolation polynomial through the norm of the samples, in terms of the geometry of the sampling set.

Abstract:We investigate the problem of holomorphic algebraizibility for real hypersurfaces in complex space. We introduce a new invariant of a (real-analytic) Levi-nondegenerate hypersurface called {\em the jet transcendence degree}. Using this invariant, we solve in the negative the Conjecture of Huang, Ji and Yau on the algabraizability of real hypersurfaces with algebraic syzygies.

On symplectic geometry of tangent bundles of Hermitian symmetric spaces

Abstract:We explicitly construct a symplectomorphism that relates magnetic twists to the invariant hyperkähler structure of the tangent bundle of a Hermitian symmetric space. This symplectomorphism reveals foliations by (pseudo-) holomorphic planes, predicted by vanishing of symplectic homology. Furthermore, in the spirit of Weinstein's tubular neighborhood theorem, we extend the (Lagrangian) diagonal embedding of a compact Hermitian symmetric space to an open dense embedding of a specified neighborhood of the zero section. Using this embedding, we compute the Gromov width and Hofer-Zehnder capacity of these neighborhoods of the zero section.
