Abstract:In this paper it is shown that any regular critical point of the Mumford-Shah functional, with positive definite second variation, is an isolated local minimizer with respect to competitors which are sufficiently close in the L^1-topology.

Abstract:Existence and regularity of the minima of a functional have been studied extensively in the calculus of variations. It is our purpose here to present an analogy for saddle points. We shall prove two existence theorems for saddle points for certain functionals. The first is based on the Von Neumann-Sion-Ky Fan theorem [1], and the second is an application of a local minimax theorem due to S.Z. Shi and the author [5].

Abstract:In this paper we consider semilinear equations $-\Delta u=f(u)$ with Dirichlet boundary conditions on certain convex domains of the two dimensional model spaces of constant curvature. We prove that a positive, semi-stable solution $u$ has exactly one non-degenerate critical point (a maximum). The proof consists in relating the critical points of the solution with the critical points of a suitable auxiliary function, jointly with a topological degree argument.

Abstract:In this paper, we apply our minimax theory ([4], [5], [6]) with the one developed by A. Moameni in [2] to formalize a general scheme giving the multiplicity of critical points. Sign Changing Critical Points for Locally Lipschitz Functionals

Abstract:In this paper, some existence results for sign-changing critical points of locally Lipschitz functionals in real Banach space are obtained by the method combining the invariant sets of descending ow method with a quantitative deformation. First we assume the locally Lipschitz functionals to be outwardly directed on the the boundary of some closed convex sets of the real Banach space. By using the relation between the critical points on the Banach space and those of the closed convex sets, we construct a quantitative deformation lemma, and then we obtain some linking type of critical points theorems. These theoretical results can be applied to the study of the existence of sign-changing solutions for differential inclusion problems. In contrast with the related results in the literatures, the main results of this paper relax the requirement that the functional being of C1 continuous to locally Lipschitz.

Abstract:In this paper, we deal with a strongly singular problem involving a non-local operator, a critical nonlinearity, and a subcritical perturbation. We apply techniques from non-smooth analysis to the energy functional, in combination with the study of the topological properties of the sublevels of its smooth part, to prove the existence of three weak solutions: two points of local minimum and a third one as a mountain pass critical point.

Abstract:We consider a family of critical points of the Ambrosio-Tortorelli energy with an obstacle condition on the phase field variable. This problem can be interpreted as a time discretization of a quasistatic evolution problem where the obstacle at step $n$ is defined as the solution at step $n-1$. The obstacle condition now reads as an irreversibility condition (the crack can only increase in time). The questions tackled here are the regularity of the critical points, the properties inherited from the obstacle sequence, the position of the limit points and the equipartition of the phase field energy. The limits of such critical points turn out to be critical points of the Mumford-Shah energy that inherit the possible discontinuities induced by the obstacle sequence.

Abstract:Minimizing a smooth function f on a closed subset C leads to different notions of stationarity: Fr{é}chet stationarity, which carries a strong variational meaning, and criticality, which is defined through a closure process and involves the notion of limiting, or Mordukovitch, subdifferential. The latter is an optimality condition which may loose the variational meaning of Fr{é}chet stationarity in some settings. The purpose of this note is to illustrate that, while criticality is the appropriate notion in full generality, Fr{é}chet stationarity is typical in practical <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://scenarios.We" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> gather two results to illustrate this phenomenon. These results are essentially known and, our goal is to provide consize self contained arguments in the constrained optimization setting. First we show that if C is semi-algebraic, then for a generic smooth semi-algebraic function f , all critical points of f on C are actually Fr{é}chet stationary. Second we prove that for small step-sizes, all the accumulation points of the projected gradient algorithm are Fr{é}chet stationary, with an explicit global quadratic estimate of the remainder, avoiding potential critical points that are not Fr{é}chet stationary, and some bad local minima.

This equation corresponds to the Euler–Lagrange equation induced by the Sobolev embedding (H^1({mathbb {R}}^n)hookrightarrow L^{2^*}({mathbb {R}}^n)), and it is well-known that the solutions are uniquely characterized and are given by the so-called "Talenti bubbles".
