Abstract:We prove the local Lipschitz regularity of the local minimizers of scalar integral functionals of the form \begin{equation*} \mathcal{F}(v;\Omega)= \int_{\Omega} f (x, Dv) dx \end{equation*} under $(p,q)$-growth conditions. The main novelty is that, beside a suitable regularity assumption on the partial map $x\mapsto f(x,\xi)$, we do not assume any special structure for the energy density as a function of the $\xi$-variable.

Abstract:We prove local Lipschitz regularity for local minimiser of \[ W^{1,1}(\Omega)\ni v\mapsto \int_\Omega F(Dv)\, dx \] where $\Omega\subseteq {\mathbb R}^N$, $N\ge 2$ and $F:{\mathbb R}^N\to {\mathbb R}$ is a quasiuniformly convex integrand in the sense of Kovalev and Maldonado, i.e. a convex $C^1$-function such that the ratio between the maximum and minimum eigenvalues of $D^2F$ is essentially bounded. This class of integrands inculdes the standard singular/degenerate functions $F(z)=|z|^p$ for any $p>1$ and arises naturally as the closure, with respect to a natural convergence, of the strongly elliptic integrands of the Calculus of Variations.

We consider integral functionals with the first part of the integrand satisfying anisotropic growth conditions including a convex nondecreasing function g , and with the second part, a convex lower order term or a polyconvex lower order term. Local boundedness of minimizers is derived.

Abstract:This paper uses the Gevrey's smooth normalization theory to investigate the local integrability of vector fields, which have linear parts with one zero eigenvalue and the others non-resonant. First, we explore the general properties of C∞ local integrability. Then we show the same regularity of the Gevrey's smooth local integrability as that of the vector fields under Poincaré's non-resonant condition for the case that the real parts of the eigenvalues are all positive or negative. Lastly, a sharper expression of the loss of the regularity is provided by the lowest order of the resonant terms together with the indices of Gevrey's smoothness and the diophantine condition for the case that the matrix is in the diagonal form. One of the main tools utilized here is the KAM method in the Banach space fixed with a weighted norm.

Abstract:We establish the higher fractional differentiability for the minimizers of non-autonomous integral functionals of the form \begin{equation} \mathcal{F}(u,\Omega):=\int_\Omega \left[ f(x,Du)- g \cdot u \right] dx , \notag \end{equation} under $(p,q)$-growth conditions. Besides a suitable differentiability assumption on the partial map $x \mapsto D_\xi f(x,\xi)$, we do not need to assume any differentiability assumption on the function $g$. Moreover, we show that the higher differentiability result holds true also assuming strict convexity and growth conditions on $f$ only at infinity.

Abstract:In this paper, we mainly discuss the local regularity of the solution to the following problem \begin{align*} \begin{cases} -\dive({\bf{A}}(x)\nabla u(x))=f(x),&~x\in\Omega,\\ u(x)=0,&~x\in\partial\Omega, \end{cases} \end{align*} where $\Omega$ is a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$. In particular, we are concerned with the connection between the regularity of the solution $u$ and the integrability of the coefficient matrix ${\bf{A}}(x)$ as well as the nonhomogeneous term $f$. To be more precise, our first result is to prove that the maximum norm of $u$ can be controlled by $\|f\|_{s}$ with $f\in L^s(\Omega),~s>\frac{nq}{2q-n},~q>\frac{n}{2}$. Meanwhile, we construct some counterexamples to illustrate the index $\frac{nq}{2q-n}$ being sharp. Subsequently, we give an improved upper bound for the maximum norm of $u$. Namely, there exists a positive constant $C$ such that $$\|u\|_{\infty}\leq C\|f\|_{\frac{nq}{2q-n}}\left[\log\left(\frac{\|f\|_{s}}{~~~~~\|f\|_{\frac{nq}{2q-n}}}+1\right)+1\right].$$ Specially, the main difference of our approach compared to the arguments of [\ref{CUR}, \ref{XU}] is to construct two classes of truncation functions to remove the assumption of the boundedness of $u$. Finally, based on the previous results and Moser iteration argument, we derive the Harnack inequality of $u$ from which the Hölder continuity of the solution follows. In addition, we also find that the Lebesgue space $L^{\frac{n}{2}}(\Omega)$ to which the inverse of the smallest eigenvalue $\lambda(x) $ of the matrix {\bf{A}}(x) belongs is essentially sharp in order to establish local boundedness and the Hölder continuity of the solution.

Uniform $C^{1,α}$-regularity for almost-minimizers of some nonlocal perturbations of the perimeter

Abstract:In this paper, we establish a $C^{1,\alpha}$-regularity theorem for almost-minimizers of the functional $\mathcal{F}_{\varepsilon,\gamma}=P-\gamma P_{\varepsilon}$, where $\gamma\in(0,1)$ and $P_{\varepsilon}$ is a nonlocal energy converging to the perimeter as $\varepsilon$ vanishes. Our theorem provides a criterion for $C^{1,\alpha}$-regularity at a point of the boundary which is uniform as the parameter $\varepsilon$ goes to $0$. Since the two terms in the energy are of the same order when $\varepsilon$ is small, we are considering here much stronger nonlocal interactions than those considered in most related works. As a consequence of our regularity result, we obtain that, for $\varepsilon$ small enough, volume-constrained minimizers of $\mathcal{F}_{\varepsilon,\gamma}$ are balls. For small $\varepsilon$, this minimization problem corresponds to the large mass regime for a Gamow-type problem where the nonlocal repulsive term is given by an integrable $G$ with sufficiently fast decay at infinity.

Abstract:We consider elliptic operators in divergence form with lower order terms of the form $Lu=-$div$\nabla u+bu)-c\nabla u-du$, in an open set $\Omega\subset \mathbb{R}^n$, $n\geq 3$, with possibly infinite Lebesgue measure. We assume that the $n\times n$ matrix $A$ is uniformly elliptic with real, merely bounded and possibly non-symmetric coefficients, and either $b,c\in L^{n,\infty}_{loc}(\Omega)$ and $d\in L_{loc}^{\frac{n}{2},\infty}(\Omega)$, or $|b|^2,|c|^2,|d|\in \mathcal{K}_{loc}(\Omega)$, where $\mathcal{K}_{loc}(\Omega)$ stands for the local Stummel-Kato class. Let $\mathcal{K}_{Dini}(\Omega)$ be a variant of $\mathcal{K}(\Omega)$ satisfying a Carleson-Dini-type condition. We develop a De Giorgi/Nash/Moser theory for solutions of $Lu=f-$div$g$, where $|f|$ and $|g|^2\in \mathcal{K}_{Dini}(\Omega)$ if, for $q\in [n, \infty)$, any of the following assumptions holds: a) $|b|^2,|d|\in \mathcal{K}_{Dini}(\Omega)$ and either $c\in L^{n,q}_{loc}(\Omega)$ or $|c|^2\in \mathcal{K}_{loc}(\Omega)$; b) div$b +d \leq 0$ and either $b+c\in L^{n,q}_{loc}(\Omega)$ or $|b+c|^2\in \mathcal{K}_{loc}(\Omega)$; c) $-$div$c+d \leq 0$ and $|b+c|^2\in \mathcal{K}_{Dini}(\Omega)$. We also prove a Wiener-type criterion for boundary regularity. Assuming global conditions on the coefficients, we show that the variational Dirichlet problem is well-posed and, assuming $-$div$c+d\leq 0$, we construct the Green's function associated with $L$ satisfying quantitative estimates. Under the additional hypothesis $|b+c|^2\in \mathcal{K}'(\Omega)$, we show that it satisfies global pointwise bounds and also construct the Green's function associated with the formal adjoint operator of $L$. An important feature of our results is that all the estimates are scale invariant and independent of $\Omega$, while we do not assume smallness of the norms of the coefficients or coercivity of the bilinear form.

A condition for the Holder regularity of strong local minimizers of a nonlinear elastic energy in two dimensions

Abstract:We prove the local Hölder continuity of strong local minimizers of the stored energy functional \[E(u)=\int_{\om}\lambda |\nabla u|^{2}+h(\det \nabla u) \,dx\] subject to a condition of `positive twist'. The latter turns out to be equivalent to requiring that $u$ maps circles to suitably star-shaped sets. The convex function $h(s)$ grows logarithmically as $s\to 0+$, linearly as $s \to +\infty$, and satisfies $h(s)=+\infty$ if $s \leq 0$. These properties encode a constitutive condition which ensures that material does not interpenetrate during a deformation and is one of the principal obstacles to proving the regularity of local or global minimizers. The main innovation is to prove that if a local minimizer has positive twist a.e\frenchspacing. on a ball then an Euler-Lagrange type inequality holds and a Caccioppoli inequality can be derived from it. The claimed Hölder continuity then follows by adapting some well-known elliptic regularity theory. We also demonstrate the regularizing effect that the term $\int_{\om} h(\det \nabla u)\,dx$ can have by analysing the regularity of local minimizers in the class of `shear maps'. In this setting a more easily verifiable condition than that of positive twist is imposed, with the result that local minimizers are Hölder continuous.

On generalized Dirichlet integrals in the smooth and in the o-minimal setting

Abstract:Given a compact manifold $M$ equipped with smooth vector fields $X_1,\ldots, X_r$, we consider the generalized Dirichlet energy \[\mathbf{E}(f)= \sum_{j=1}^r\int_M |X_jf|^2\, dm,\] where $dm$ is a volume form, and ask if the set \[ \mathcal{B}=\{f\in L^2(M)\colon\,\mathbf{E}(f)+\lVert f\rVert_{L^2(M)}^2\leq 1 \} \] is precompact in $L^2(M)$. We find a geometric sufficient condition in terms of "iterated characteristic sets" and use it to show that, if the vector fields are tame (in the sense of o-minimality) and satisfy the Hörmander condition of some order $s$ on a dense set of points, then the only obstruction to precompactness is the existence of a characteristic submanifold (i.e. a nonempty submanifold of positive codimension to which each $X_j$ is tangent). Implications for global regularity of sum-of-squares operators not necessarily satisfying Hörmander condition are discussed in an appendix.

Abstract:For a given constant $\lambda > 0$ and a bounded Lipschitz domain $D \subset \mathbb{R}^n$ ($n \geq 2$), we establish that almost-minimizers of the functional $$ J(\mathbf{v}; D) = \int_D \sum_{i=1}^{m} \left|\nabla v_i(x) \right|^p+ \lambda \chi_{\{\left|\mathbf{v} \right|>0\}} (x) \, dx, \qquad 1<p<\infty, $$ where $\mathbf{v} = (v_1, \cdots, v_m)$, and $m \in \mathbb{N}$, exhibit optimal Lipschitz continuity in compact sets of $D$. Furthermore, assuming $p \geq 2$ and employing a distinctly different methodology, we tackle the issue of boundary Lipschitz regularity for $v$. This approach simultaneously yields alternative proof for the optimal local Lipschitz regularity for the interior case.

Abstract:We study the local boundedness of minimizers of non uniformly elliptic integral functionals with a suitable anisotropic growth condition. More precisely, the growth condition of the integrand function from below involves different powers of the partial derivatives of u and some monomial weights with that may degenerate to zero. Otherwise from above it is controlled by a q power of the modulus of the gradient of u with and an unbounded weight . The main tool in the proof is an anisotropic Sobolev inequality with respect to the weights .

Abstract:We study a one-dimensional Lagrangian problem including the variational reformulation, derived in a recent work of Ambrosio–Baradat–Brenier, of the discrete Monge–Ampère gravitational model, which describes the motion of interacting particles whose dynamics is ruled by the optimal transport problem. The more general action-type functional we consider contains a discontinuous potential term related to the descending slope of the opposite squared distance function from a generic discrete set in . We exploit the underlying geometrical structure provided by the associated Voronoi decomposition of the space to obtain -regularity for local minimizers out of a finite number of shock times.

Abstract:In this paper, in a Carnot group $\mathbb{G}$ of step $2$ and homogeneous dimension $Q$, we prove that almost minimizers of the (horizontal) one-phase $p$-Bernoulli-type functional $$ J_p(u,\Omega):=\int_{\Omega}\Big( |\nabla_{\mathbb{G}} u(x)|^p+\chi_{\{u>0\}}(x)\Big)\,dx$$ whenever $p>p^\#:=\frac{2Q}{Q+2}$, are locally Lipschitz continuous with respect Carnot-Carathéodory distance on $\mathbb{G}$.
