Abstract:We study minimisers of the $p$-conformal energy functionals, \[ \mathsf{E}_p(f):=\int_\ID \IK^p(z,f)\,dz,\quad f|_\IS=f_0|_\IS, \] defined for self mappings $f:\ID\to\ID$ with finite distortion and prescribed boundary values $f_0$. Here \[ \IK(z,f) = \frac{\|Df(z)\|^2}{J(z,f)} = \frac{1+|\mu_f(z)|^2}{1-|\mu_f(z)|^2}\] is the pointwise distortion functional and $\mu_f(z)$ is the Beltrami coefficient of $f$. We show that for quasisymmetric boundary data the limiting regimes $p\to\infty$ recover the classical Teichmüller theory of extremal quasiconformal mappings (in part a result of Ahlfors), and for $p\to1$ recovers the harmonic mapping theory. Critical points of $\mathsf{E}_p$ always satisfy the inner-variational distributional equation \[ 2p\int_\ID \IK^p\;\frac{\overline{\mu_f}}{1+|\mu_f|^2}\varphi_\zbar \; dz=\int_\ID \IK^p \; \varphi_z\; dz,\quad\forall\varphi\in C_0^\infty(\ID ). \] We establish the existence of minimisers in the {\em a priori} regularity class $W^{1,\frac{2p}{p+1}}(\ID)$ and show these minimisers have a pseudo-inverse - a continuous $W^{1,2}(\ID)$ surjection of $\ID$ with $(h\circ f)(z)=z$ almost everywhere. We then give a sufficient condition to ensure $C^{\infty}(\ID)$ smoothness of solutions to the distributional equation. For instance $\IK(z,f)\in L^r_{loc}(\ID)$ for any $r>p+1$ is enough to imply the solutions to the distributional equation are local diffeomorphisms. Further $\IK(w,h)\in L^1(\ID)$ will imply $h$ is a homeomorphism, and together these results yield a diffeomorphic minimiser. We show such higher regularity assumptions to be necessary for critical points of the inner variational equation.

Abstract:We study the problem of finding complete conformal metrics determined by some symmetric function of the modified Schouten tensor on compact manifolds with boundary; which reduces to a Dirichlet problem. We prove the existence of the solution under some suitable conditions. In particular, we prove that every smooth compact n-dimensional manifold with boundary, with n >= 3, admits a complete Riemannian metric g whose Ricci curvature Ric(g) and scalar curvature R-g satisfydet(Ric(g) - R(g)g) = const.This result generalizes Aviles and McOwen's in the scalar curvature case.
The exponential Teichmüller theory: Ahlfors--Hopf differentials and diffeomorphisms

Abstract:We consider minimisers of the $p$-exponential conformal energy for homeomorphisms $f:R \to S$ of finite distortion $\IK(z,f)$ between analytically finite Riemann surfaces in a fixed homotopy class $[f_0]$,\[ \mE_p(f:R,S)=\int_R \exp(p\IK(z,f))\; d\sigma(z). \] Homeomorphic minimisers exist should the barrier be a homeomorphism of finite energy, $\mE_p(f_0,R,S)<\infty$. In general this problem is not variational, however the Euler-Lagrange equations show the inverses $h=f^{-1}$ of sufficiently regular stationary solutions have an associated holomorphic quadratic differential -- the Ahlfors-Hopf differential, \[\Phi=\exp(p\IK(w,h))\,h_w\overline{h_\wbar}\,d\sigma_R(h). \] From the Riemann-Roch theorem and an approximation technique, we show the variational equations hold for extremal mappings. We take this as a starting point for higher regularity to show that if $h:\Omega\to\tilde{\Omega}$ is a Sobolev homeomorphism between planar domains with holomorphic Ahlfors-Hopf differential, then $h$ is a diffeomorphism. It will follow that $h$ is harmonic in a metric induced by its own (smooth) distortion. We develop equations for the Beltrami coefficient of $h$, establishing a connection between degenerate elliptic non-linear Beltrami equations and these harmonic mappings. On the surface we conclude that minimisers $f_p\in [f_0]$ of $\mE_p(f:R,S)$ are diffeomorphisms and are unique stationary points. This now links two different approaches to Teichmüller theory; the classical theory of extremal quasiconformal maps and the harmonic mapping theory. As $p\to\infty$ we show $f_p\to f_\infty$ to recover the unique extremal quasiconformal mapping . This extremal quasiconformal mapping is not a diffeomorphism (unless it is conformal) and $f_p$ degenerates on a divisor. As $p\to0$ we recover the harmonic diffeomorphism in $[f_0]$ and Shoen-Yau's results.

Abstract:Finding surface mappings with least distortion arises from many applications in various fields. Extremal Teichmuller maps are surface mappings with least conformality distortion. The existence and uniqueness of the extremal Teichmuller map between Riemann surfaces of finite type are theoretically guaranteed (see Fletcher and Markovic, Quasiconformal maps and Teichmuller theory, Oxford Graduate Texts in Math., vol. 11, Oxford University Press, Oxford, 2007). Recently, a simple iterative algorithm for computing the Teichmuller maps between connected Riemann surfaces with given boundary value was proposed by Lui, Lam, Yau, and Gu in Teichmuller extremal mapping and its applications to landmark matching registration, arXiv: 1211.2569. Numerical results were reported in the paper to show the effectiveness of the algorithm. The method was successfully applied to landmark-matching registration. The purpose of this paper is to prove the iterative algorithm proposed in loc. cit., indeed converges.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the smooth map from a Riemannian manifold to the standard Euclidean space and the p-Ginzburg-Landau energy. Under suitable curvature conditions on the domain manifold, some Liouville type theorems are established by assuming either growth conditions of the p-Ginzburg-Landau energy or an asymptotic condition at the infinity for the maps. In the end of paper, we obtain the unique constant solution of the constant Dirichlet boundary value problems on starlike domains.

Abstract:Let f be a Teichmuller self-mapping of the unit disk Delta corresponding to a holomorphic quadratic differential phi. If phi satisfies the growth condition A(r, phi) = integralintegral(\jz\< r) vertical bar phi vertical bar dxdy = O((1 - r)(-s)) (as r -> 1), for any given s > 0, then f is extremal, and for any given a 2 ( 0; 1), there exists a subsequence {n(k)} of N such that {phi(a(1/2nk)z)/integralintegral(Delta)\phi(a(1/2nk)z)\dxdy} is a Hamilton sequence. In addition, it is shown that there exists ' with bounded Bers norm such that the corresponding Teichmuller mapping is not extremal, which gives a negative answer to a conjecture by Huang in 1995.

Abstract:We study Lipschitz critical points of the energy $\int_\Omega g(\det D u) \, d x$ in two dimensions, where $g$ is a strictly convex function. We prove that the Jacobian of any Lipschitz critical point is constant, and that the Jacobians of sequences of approximately critical points converge strongly. The latter result answers in particular an open problem posed by Kirchheim, Müller and Šverák in 2003.

Abstract:Mappingsofbi-conformalenergyformthewidestclass of homeomorphisms that one can hope to build a viable extension of Geometric Function Theory with connections to mathematical models of Nonlinear Elasticity. Such mappings are exactly the ones with finite conformal energy and integrable inner distortion. It is in this way, that our studies extend the applications of quasiconformal homeomorphisms to the degenerate elliptic systems of PDEs. The present paper searches a bi-conformal variant of the Riemann Mapping Theorem, focusing on domains with exemplary singular boundaries that are not quasiballs. We establish the sharp description of boundary singularities that can be created and flattened by mappings of bi-conformal energy.

Abstract:In relativity, the energy of a moving particle depends on the observer, and the rest mass is the minimal energy seen among all observers. The Wang–Yau quasi-local mass for a surface in spacetime introduced in Wang and Yau (Phys Rev Lett 102(2):021101, 2009 ; Commun Math Phys 288(3):919–942, 2009 ) is defined by minimizing quasi-local energy associated with admissible isometric embeddings of the surface into the Minkowski space. A critical point of the quasi-local energy is an isometric embedding satisfying the Euler–Lagrange equation. In this article, we prove results regarding both local and global minimizing properties of critical points of the Wang–Yau quasi-local energy. In particular, under a condition on the mean curvature vector we show a critical point minimizes the quasi-local energy locally. The same condition also implies that the critical point is globally minimizing among all axially symmetric embedding provided the image of the associated isometric embedding lies in a totally geodesic Euclidean 3-space.

Abstract:We characterize two classical types of conformality of a holomorphic self-map of the unit disk at a boundary point - existence of a finite angular derivative in the sense of Carathéodory and the weaker property of angle preservation - in terms of the non-tangential asymptotic behaviour of the hyperbolic distortion of the map. These characterizations are given purely with reference to the intrinsic metric geometry of the unit disk. In particular, we relate the classical Julia-Wolff-Carathéodory theorem with the case of equality in the Schwarz-Pick lemma at the boundary. We also provide an operator-theoretic characterization of the existence of a finite angular derivative based on Hilbert space methods. As an application we study the backward dynamics of discrete dynamical systems induced by holomorphic self-maps, and characterize the regularity of the associated pre-models in terms of a Blaschke-type condition involving the hyperbolic distortion along regular backward orbits.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the constrained minimization problem for an energy functional which is related to a Kirchhoff-type equation. For s=1, there many articles have analyzed the limit behavior of minimizers when η>0 as b→0+ or b>0 as η→0+. When the equation involves a varying non-local term ∫R3|∇u|2dxs, we give a detailed limit behavior analysis of constrained minimizers for any positive sequence {ηk} with ηk→0+. The present paper obtains an interesting result on this topic and enriches the conclusions of previous works.

Abstract:The main goal of this paper is to give an affirmative answer to the long-standing conjecture which asserts that the affine map is a uniquely extremal quasiconformal map in the Teichmuller space of the complex plane punctured at the integer lattice points. In addition we derive a corollary related to the geometry of the corresponding Teichmuller space. Besides that we consider the classical dual extremal problem which naturally arises in the tangent space of the Teichmuller space. In particular we prove the uniqueness of Hahn-Banach extension of the associated linear functional given on the Bergman space of the integer lattice domain. Several useful estimates related to the local and global properties of integrable meromorphic functions and the delta functional (see the definition below) are also obtained. These estimates are intended to study the behavior of integrable functions near singularities and they are valid in general settings.

Abstract:Continuous conformal transformation minimizes the conformal energy. The convergence of minimizing discrete conformal energy when the discrete mesh size tends to zero is an open problem. This paper addresses this problem via a careful error analysis of the discrete conformal energy. Under a weak condition on triangulation, the discrete function minimizing the discrete conformal energy converges to the continuous conformal mapping as the mesh size tends to zero.
Constraint maps with free boundaries: the Bernoulli case

Abstract:In this manuscript, we delve into the study of maps $u\in W^{1,2}(\Omega;\overline M)$ that minimize the Alt-Caffarelli energy functional $$ \int_\Omega (|Du|^2 + q^2 \chi_{u^{-1}(M)})\,dx, $$ under the condition that the image $u(\Omega)$ is confined within $\overline M$. Here, $\Omega$ denotes a bounded domain in the ambient space $\mathbb{R}^n$ (with $n\geq 1$), and $M$ represents a smooth domain in the target space $\mathbb{R}^m$ (where $m\geq 2$). Since our minimizing constraint maps coincide with harmonic maps in the interior of the coincidence set, ${\rm int}(u^{-1}(\partial M))$, such maps are prone to developing discontinuities due to their inherent nature. This research marks the commencement of an in-depth analysis of potential singularities that might arise within and around the free boundary. Our first significant contribution is the validity of a $\varepsilon$-regularity theorem. This theorem is founded on a novel method of Lipschitz approximation near points exhibiting low energy. Utilizing this approximation and extending the analysis through a bootstrapping approach, we show Lipschitz continuity of our maps whenever the energy is small energy. Our subsequent key finding reveals that, whenever the complement of $M$ is uniformly convex and of class $C^3$, the maps minimizing the Alt-Caffarelli energy with a positive parameter $q$ exhibit Lipschitz continuity within a universally defined neighborhood of the non-coincidence set $u^{-1}(M)$. In particular, this Lipschitz continuity extends to the free boundary. A noteworthy consequence of our findings is the smoothness of flat free boundaries and of the resulting image maps.

A condition for the Holder regularity of strong local minimizers of a nonlinear elastic energy in two dimensions

Abstract:We prove the local Hölder continuity of strong local minimizers of the stored energy functional \[E(u)=\int_{\om}\lambda |\nabla u|^{2}+h(\det \nabla u) \,dx\] subject to a condition of `positive twist'. The latter turns out to be equivalent to requiring that $u$ maps circles to suitably star-shaped sets. The convex function $h(s)$ grows logarithmically as $s\to 0+$, linearly as $s \to +\infty$, and satisfies $h(s)=+\infty$ if $s \leq 0$. These properties encode a constitutive condition which ensures that material does not interpenetrate during a deformation and is one of the principal obstacles to proving the regularity of local or global minimizers. The main innovation is to prove that if a local minimizer has positive twist a.e\frenchspacing. on a ball then an Euler-Lagrange type inequality holds and a Caccioppoli inequality can be derived from it. The claimed Hölder continuity then follows by adapting some well-known elliptic regularity theory. We also demonstrate the regularizing effect that the term $\int_{\om} h(\det \nabla u)\,dx$ can have by analysing the regularity of local minimizers in the class of `shear maps'. In this setting a more easily verifiable condition than that of positive twist is imposed, with the result that local minimizers are Hölder continuous.

Abstract:We consider surfaces in ${\mathbb R}^3$ of type ${\mathbb S}^2$ which minimize the Willmore functional with prescribed isoperimetric ratio. The existence of smooth minimizers was proved by Schygulla (Archive Rational Mechanics and Analysis, 2012). In the singular limit when the isoperimetric ratio converges to zero, he showed convergence to a double round sphere in the sense of varifolds. Here we give a full blowup analysis of this limit, showing that the two spheres are connected by a catenoidal neck. Besides its geometric interest, the problem was studied as a simplified model in the theory of cell membranes, see e.g. Berndl, Lipowsky, Seifert (Physical Review A, 1991).
