Abstract:By using the interior curvature estimate and Gromov's compactness theorem, we prove that a stable complete minimal hypersurface in R n +1 with finite total scalar curvature must be a hyperplane. This extends the result obtained by P. Bérard in Remarques sur l'équation de J. Simons, Pitman Monographs Surveys Pure Appl. Math. , vol. 52, 1991, pp. 47-57.
On free boundary minimal submanifolds in geodesic balls in $\mathbb H^n$ and $\mathbb S^n_+$

Abstract:We consider free boundary minimal submanifolds in geodesic balls in the hyperbolic space $\mathbb H^n$ and in the round upper hemisphere $\mathbb S^n_+$. Recently, Lima and Menezes have found a connection between free boundary minimal surfaces in geodesic balls in $\mathbb S^n_+$ and maximal metrics for a functional, defined on the set of Riemannian metrics on a given compact surface with boundary. This connection is similar to the connection between free boundary minimal submanifolds in Euclidean balls and the critical metrics of the functional \say{the $k$-th normalized Steklov eigenvalue}, introduced by Faser and Schoen. We define two natural functionals on the set of Riemannian metrics on a compact surface with boundary. One of these functionals is the high order generalization of the functional, introduced by Lima and Menezes. We prove that the critical metrics for these functionals arise as metrics induced by free boundary minimal immersions in geodesic balls in $\mathbb H^n$ and in $\mathbb S^n_+$, respectively. We also prove a converse statement. Besides that, we discuss the (Morse) index of free boundary minimal submanifolds in geodesic balls in $\mathbb H^n$ or $\mathbb S^n_+$. We show that the index of the critical spherical catenoids in these spaces is 4 and the index of a geodesic $k$-ball is $2(n-k)$. For the proof of these statements we introduce the notion of spectral index similarly to the case of free boundary minimal submanifolds in a unit ball in the Euclidean space.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that every strictly convex 3-ball with nonnegative Ricci-curvature contains at least 3 embedded free-boundary minimal 2-disks for any generic metric, and at least 2 solutions even without genericity assumption. Our approach combines ideas from mean curvature flow, min-max theory and degree theory. We also establish the existence of smooth free-boundary mean-convex foliations. In stark contrast to our prior work in the closed setting, the present result is sharp for generic metrics.

Abstract:Let $Crit M$ denote the minimal number of critical points (not necessarily non-degenerate) on a closed smooth manifold $M$. We are interested in the evaluation of $Crit$. It is worth noting that we do not know yet whether $Crit M$ is a homotopy invariant of $M$. This makes the research of $Crit$ a challenging problem. In particular, we pose the following question: given a map $f: M \to N$ of degree 1 of closed manifolds, is it true that $Crit M \geq Crit N$? We prove that this holds in dimension 3 or less. Some high dimension examples are considered. Note also that an affirmative answer to the question implies the homotopy invariance of $Crit$; this simple observation is a good motivation for the research.

Abstract:We formulate a class of functionals in space forms such that its critical points include the r -minimal hyper-surface and the minimal hyper-surface as special cases. We obtain the algebraic, differential and variational characteristics of the critical surfaces determined by the critical points. We prove the Simons’ type nonexistence theorem which indicates that in the unit sphere, there exists no stable critical surfaces, and the Alexandrov’s type existence theorem which indicates that in Euclidean space, the sphere is the only stable critical surfaces.

Abstract:In this paper, we apply our minimax theory ([4], [5], [6]) with the one developed by A. Moameni in [2] to formalize a general scheme giving the multiplicity of critical points. Here is a sample of application of the scheme to a critical elliptic problem: Let $\Omega\subset {\bf R}^n$ ($n\geq 3$) be a smooth bounded domain and let $1<q<2\leq p<{{2n}\over {n-2}}$.Then, for every $r, \nu>0$, there exists $\lambda^*>0$ with the following property: for every $\lambda\in ]0,\lambda^*[$, $\mu\in ]-\lambda^*,\lambda^*[$, and for every convex dense set $S\subset H^{-1}(\Omega)$, there exists $\tilde\varphi\in S$, with $\|\tilde\varphi\|_{H^{-1}(\Omega)}<r$, such that the problem $$\cases{-\Delta u=\lambda(|u|^{{{4}\over {n-2}}}u+\nu |u|^{q-2}u+\mu|u|^{p-2}u+\tilde\varphi) & in $\Omega$\cr & \cr u=0 & on $\partial\Omega$\cr}$$ has at least two solutions whose norms in $H^1_0(\Omega)$ are less than or equal to $r$.

Abstract:Let ${x: M \to R^{n+p}(c)}$ be an n-dimensional compact, possibly with boundary, submanifold in an (n + p)-dimensional space form R n+p(c). Assume that r is even and ${r\in \{0,1,\ldots,n-1\}}$ , in this paper we introduce rth mean curvature function S r and (r + 1)-th mean curvature vector field ${\vec{S}_{r+1}}$ . We call M to be an r-minimal submanifold if ${\vec{S}_{r+1}\equiv 0}$ on M, we note that the concept of 0-minimal submanifold is the concept of minimal submanifold. In this paper, we define a functional ${J_r(x)=\int_M F_r(S_0,S_2,\ldots,S_r)dv}$ of ${x: M \to R^{n+p}(c)}$ , by calculation of the first variational formula of J r we show that x is a critical point of J r if and only if x is r-minimal. Besides, we give many examples of r-minimal submanifolds in space forms. We calculate the second variational formula of J r and prove that there exists no compact without boundary stable r-minimal submanifold with ${S_r > 0}$ in the unit sphere S n+p. When r = 0, noting S 0 = 1, our result reduces to Simons’ result: there exists no compact without boundary stable minimal submanifold in the unit sphere S n+p.

Abstract:We study the existence of minimal networks in the unit sphere $\mathbf{S}^d$ and the unit ball $\mathbf{B}^d$ of $\mathbf{R}^d$ endowed with Riemannian metrics close to the standard ones. We employ a finite-dimensional reduction method, modelled on the configuration of $\theta$-networks in $\mathbf{S}^d$ and triods in $\mathbf{B}^d$, jointly with the Lusternik--Schnirelmann category.

Approaches to critical point theory via sequential and parametrized topological complexity

Abstract:The Lusternik-Schnirelmann category of a space was introduced to obtain a lower bound on the number of critical points of a $C^1$-function on a given manifold. Related to Lusternik-Schnirelmann category and motivated by topological robotics, the topological complexity (TC) of a space is a numerical homotopy invariant whose topological properties are an active field of research. The notions of sequential and parametrized topological complexity extend the ideas of topological complexity. While the definition of TC is closely related to Lusternik-Schnirelmann category, the connections of sequential and parametrized TC to critical point theory have not been fully explored yet. In this article we apply methods from Lusternik-Schnirelmann theory to establish various lower bounds on numbers of critical points of functions in terms of sequential and parametrized TCs. We carry out several consequences and applications of these bounds, among them a computation of the parametrized TC of the unit tangent bundles of $(4m-1)$-spheres.

Abstract:In this treatise, we discuss existence and uniqueness questions for parametric minimal surfaces in Riemannian spaces, which represent minimal graphs. We choose the Riemannian metric suitably such that the variational solution of the Riemannian Dirichlet integral under Dirichlet boundary conditions possesses a one-to-one projection onto a plane. At first we concentrate our considerations on existence results for boundary value problems. Then we study uniqueness questions for boundary value problems and for complete minimal graphs. Here we establish curvature estimates for minimal graphs on discs, which imply Bernstein-type results.

Abstract:In this paper we prove a rigidity statement for free boundary minimal surfaces produced via min-max methods. More precisely, we prove that for any Riemannian metric $g$ on the 3-ball $B$ with non-negative Ricci curvature and $\mathrm{II}_{\partial B}\ge g_{|\partial B}$, there exists a free boundary minimal disk $\Delta$ of least area among all free boundary minimal disks in $(B,g)$. Moreover, the area of any such $\Delta$ equals to the width of $(B,g)$, $\Delta$ has index one, and the length of $\partial\Delta$ is bounded from above by $2\pi$. Furthermore, the length of $\partial\Delta$ equals to $2\pi$ if and only if $(B,g)$ is isometric to the Euclidean unit ball. This is related to a rigidity result obtained by F.C. Marques and A. Neves in the closed case. The proof uses a rigidity statement concerning half-balls with non-negative Ricci curvature which is true in any dimension.

Abstract:The theorem of Le Calvez and Yoccoz states that there are no minimal homeomorphisms on the finite punctered 2-dimensional sphere S 2 . We show that this does not hold for other surfaces. Moreover, we discuss why the fast-conjugation-method fails in the most cases to construct such homeomorphisms. This article based on an old unpublished article (Quasi-Minimal, Pseudo-Minimal Systems and Dense Orbits) with incorrect results.

Abstract:Combining the tools of geometric analysis with properties of Jordan angles and angle space distributions, we derive a spherical and a Euclidean Bernstein theorem for minimal submanifolds of arbitrary dimension and codimension, under the condition that the Gauss image is contained in some geometrically defined closed region of a Grassmannian manifold. The proof depends on the subharmoncity of an auxiliary function, the Codazzi equations and geometric measure theory.

Abstract:We establish general bounds on the topology of free boundary minimal surfaces obtained via min-max methods in compact, three-dimensional ambient manifolds with mean convex boundary. We prove that the first Betti number is lower semicontinuous along min-max sequences converging in the sense of varifolds to free boundary minimal surfaces. In the orientable case, we obtain an even stronger result which implies that if the number of boundary components increases in the varifold limit, then the genus decreases at least as much. We also present several compelling applications, such as the variational construction of a free boundary minimal trinoid in the Euclidean unit ball.

Abstract:A minimal geodesic on a Riemannian manifold is a geodesic defined on $\mathbb{R}$ that lifts to a globally distance minimizing curve on the universal covering. Bangert proved that there is a lower bound for the number of geometrically distinct minimal geodesics of closed Riemannian manifolds that is linear in the first Betti number, using the stable norm unit ball on the first homology. We refine this method to obtain a quadratic lower bound.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that every locally minimizing curve with constant speed in a prox-regular subset of a Riemannian manifold is a weak geodesic. Moreover, it is shown that under certain assumptions, every weak geodesic is locally minimizing. Furthermore, a notion of closed weak geodesics on prox-regular sets is introduced and a characterization of these curves as nonsmooth critical points of the energy functional is presented.

Abstract:If (N, ω, J, g) is an almost Kähler manifold andM is a branched minimal immersion which is not aJ-holomorphic curve, we show that the complex tangents are isolated and that each has a negative index, which extends the results in the Kähler case by S. S. Chern and J. Wolfson [2] and S. Webster [7] to almost Kähler manifolds. As an application, we get lower estimates for the genus of embedded minimal surfaces in almost Kähler manifolds. The proofs of these results are based on the well-known Cartan’s moving frame methods as in [2, 7]. In our case, we must compute the torsion of the almost complex structures and find a useful representation of torsion. Finally, we prove that the minimal surfaces in complex projective plane with any almost complex structure is aJ-holomorphic curve if it is homologous to the complex line.
