Abstract:Kawakubo and Uchida showed that, if a closed oriented 4k-dimensional manifold M admits a semi-free circle action such that the dimension of the fixed point set is less than 2k, then the signature of M vanishes. In this note, by using G-signature theorem and the rigidity of the signature operator, we generalize this result to more general circle actions. Combining the same idea with the remarkable Witten-Taubes-Bott rigidity theorem, we explore more vanishing results on spin manifolds admitting such circle actions. Our results are closely related to some earlier results of Conner-Floyd, Landweber-Stong and Hirzebruch-Slodowy.

Abstract:This paper contains several results concerning circle action on almost-complex and smooth manifolds. More precisely, we show that, for an almost-complex manifold $M^{2mn}$(resp. a smooth manifold $N^{4mn}$), if there exists a partition $\lambda=(\lambda_{1},...,\lambda_{u})$ of weight $m$ such that the Chern number $(c_{\lambda_{1}}... c_{\lambda_{u}})^{n}[M]$ (resp. Pontrjagin number $(p_{\lambda_{1}}... p_{\lambda_{u}})^{n}[N]$) is nonzero, then \emph{any} circle action on $M^{2mn}$ (resp. $N^{4mn}$) has at least $n+1$ fixed points. When an even-dimensional smooth manifold $N^{2n}$ admits a semi-free action with isolated fixed points, we show that $N^{2n}$ bounds, which generalizes a well-known fact in the free case. We also provide a topological obstruction, in terms of the first Chern class, to the existence of semi-free circle action with \emph{nonempty} isolated fixed points on almost-complex manifolds. The main ingredients of our proofs are Bott's residue formula and rigidity theorem.

Abstract:Given a symplectic toric manifold, the moment maps of sub-circle actions can be modified to be admissible functions in the sense of Hofer-Zehnder. By exploiting the relationship between the period of Hamiltonian sub-circle actions of a symplectic toric manifold and its Delzant polytope, we develop an invariant of Delzant polytopes which gives a lower bound of the Hofer-Zehnder capacity.

Abstract:In this paper we consider symplectic 4-manifolds $(M,\omega)$ with $c_1(M,\omega)=0$ which admit a Hamiltonian $S^1$-action together with an equivariant Maslov condition on orbits of the group action. We call such spaces {\em special Hamiltonian $S^1$-spaces}. It turns out that there are no compact special Hamiltonian $S^1$-spaces. We classify all exact special Hamiltonian $S^1$-spaces and show that all of them admit the structure of a Stein surface.

Abstract:We show that on the unit disc cotangent bundle of flat Riemannian tori, all normalized capacities coincide with twice the systole. The same result holds for flat, reversible Finsler tori and normalized capacities that are greater than or equal to the Hofer-Zehnder capacity.

Abstract:We construct new families of symplectic capacities indexed by certain symmetric polynomials, defined using rational symplectic field theory. In particular, we introduce a sequence of capacities based on an L-infinity structure on linearized contact homology and rational curve counts with local tangency constraints. We prove various structural properties of these capacities and give some preliminary computations which show that they give state of the art symplectic embedding obstructions in basic examples.

Abstract:We use explicit pseudoholomorphic curve techniques (without virtual perturbations) to define a sequence of symplectic capacities analogous to those defined recently by the second named author using symplectic field theory. We then compute these capacities for all four-dimensional convex toric domains. This gives various new obstructions to stabilized symplectic embedding problems which are sometimes sharp.

Abstract:We use positive S^1-equivariant symplectic homology to define a sequence of symplectic capacities c_k for star-shaped domains in R^{2n}. These capacities are conjecturally equal to the Ekeland-Hofer capacities, but they satisfy axioms which allow them to be computed in many more examples. In particular, we give combinatorial formulas for the capacities c_k of any "convex toric domain" or "concave toric domain". As an application, we determine optimal symplectic embeddings of a cube into any convex or concave toric domain. We also extend the capacities c_k to functions of Liouville domains which are almost but not quite symplectic capacities.
On a symplectic generalization of a Hirzebruch problem

Abstract:Motivated by a problem of Hirzebruch, we study $8$-dimensional, closed, symplectic manifolds having a Hamiltonian torus action with isolated fixed points and second Betti number equal to $1$. Such manifolds are automatically positive monotone. Our main result concerns those endowed with a Hamiltonian $T^2$-action and fourth Betti number equal to $2$. We classify their isotropy data, (equivariant) cohomology rings and (equivariant) Chern classes, and prove that they agree with those of certain explicit Fano $4$-folds with torus actions. Moreover, under more general assumptions, we prove several finiteness results concerning Betti and Chern numbers of $8$-dimensional, positive monotone symplectic manifolds with a Hamiltonian torus action.

Abstract:In a series of work [Wor22], [Wor21] and [CW20], algebraic capacities were introduced in an algebraic manner for polarized algebraic surfaces and applied to the symplectic embedding problems. In this paper, we give a reformulation of algebraic capacities in terms of only a tamed pair of symplectic form and almost complex structure. We show that they actually only depend on the cohomology class of the symplectic form for a rational manifold. Since it is not known that any symplectic form on a rational manifold is Kähler, this novel formulation potentially is more general on a rational manifold. Additionally, for manifolds with $b^+=1$, we derive asymptotic results that are parallel to the context of ECH(Embedded Contact Homology) and algebraic settings. When assuming $c_1\cdot [\omega]>0$ on rational manifolds, we further introduce a sequence of tropical polynomials which will succinctly describe those capacities viewed as functions over the domain parametrizing such symplectic forms. As an application, we give a purely symplectic proof of the correspondence between algebraic capacities and ECH capacities for smooth toric surfaces.

Symplectization of certain Hamiltonian systems in fibered almost-symplectic manifolds

Abstract:There is an important difference between Hamiltonian-like vector fields in an almost-symplectic manifold $(M,\sigma)$, compared to the standard case of a symplectic manifold: in the almost-symplectic case, a vector field such that the contraction iX{\sigma} is closed need not be a symmetry of $\sigma$. We thus call partially-Hamiltonian those vector fields which have the former property and fully-Hamiltonian those which have both properties. We consider 2n-dimensional almost symplectic manifolds with a fibration $\pi : M \longrightarrow B$ by Lagrangian tori. Trivially, all vertical partially-Hamiltonian vector fields are fully-Hamiltonian. We investigate the existence and the properties of non-vertical fully-Hamiltonian vector fields. We show that this class is non-empty, but under certain genericity conditions that involve the Fourier spectrum of their Hamiltonian, these vector fields reduce, under a (possibly only semi-globally defined, if $n \ge 4$) torus action, to families of standard symplectic-Hamiltonian vector fields.

Abstract:Consider a compact symplectic manifold of dimension $2n$ with a Hamiltionan circle action. Then there are at least $n+1$ fixed points. Motivated by recent works on the case that the fixed point set consists of precisely $n+1$ isolated points, this paper studies a Hamiltonian $S^1$ action on a $10$-dimensional compact symplectic manifold with exactly 6 isolated fixed points. We study the relations of the following data: the first Chern class of the manifold,the largest weight of the action, all the weights of the action, the total Chern class of the manifold, and the integral cohomology ring of the manifold. We show the similarities of these data with those of a coadjoint orbit of the exceptional Lie group $G_2$, equipped with a Hamiltonian action of a subcircle of the maximal torus.

Symplectic torus actions on complete intersections

Abstract:In [20] the author classified complete intersections of dimension $8k$ admitting a Hamiltonian circle action, under a certain assumption on the fixed point set. In this paper, we improve this result in two directions. Firstly, in dimension $8$ we remove the assumption on the fixed point set. Secondly, in any dimension we prove the result under an analogous assumption on the fixed point set. We also give some applications of our methods to the unimodality of Betti numbers of symplectic manifolds having a Hamiltonian $S^1$-action, and discuss the relation to symplectic rationality problems.

Abstract:We compute the Hofer-Zehnder capacity of magnetic disc tangent bundles over constant curvature surfaces. We use the fact that the magnetic geodesic flow is totally periodic and can be reparametrized to obtain a Hamiltonian circle action. The oscillation of the Hamiltonian generating the circle action immediately yields a lower bound of the Hofer-Zehnder capacity. The upper bound is obtained from Lu's bounds of the Hofer-Zehnder capacity using the theory of pseudo-holomorphic curves. In our case the gradient spheres of the Hamiltonian will give rise to the non-vanishing Gromov-Witten invariant needed.

Strong Symplectic Fillability of Contact Torus Bundles

Abstract:In this paper, we study strong symplectic fillability and Stein fillability of some tight contact structures on negative parabolic and negative hyperbolic torus bundles over the circle. For the universally tight contact structure with twisting $\pi $ in $S^1$-direction on a negative parabolic torus bundle, we completely determine its strong symplectic fillability and Stein fillability. For the universally tight contact structure with twisting $\pi $ in $S^1$-direction on a negative hyperbolic torus bundle, we give a necessary condition for it being strongly symplectically fillable. For the virtually overtwisted tight contact structure on the negative parabolic torus bundle with monodromy $-\,T^n$ ($n<0$), we prove that it is Stein fillable. In addition, we give a partial answer to a conjecture of Golla and Lisca.
The fundamental groups of presymplectic Hamiltonian G-manifolds

Abstract:We consider presymplectic manifolds equipped with Hamiltonian G-actions, G being a connected compact Lie group. A presymplectic manifold is foliated by the integral submanifolds of the kernel of the presymplectic form. For a presymplectic Hamiltonian G-manifold, Lin and Sjamaar propose a condition under which they show that the moment map image has the same "convex and polyhedral" property as the moment map image of a symplectic Hamiltonian G-manifold, a result proved independently by Atiyah, Guillemin-Sternberg, and Kirwan. In this paper, under the condition Lin and Sjamaar proposed on presymplectic Hamiltonian G-manifolds, we study the fundamental groups of such manifolds, comparing with earlier results on the fundamental groups of symplectic Hamiltonian G-manifolds. We observe that the results on the symplectic case are special cases of the results on the presymplectic case.
