Abstract:We prove the Hasse principle for a smooth proper model of a geometrically integral non-conical intersection of two quadrics in the projective space of dimension 7 over a number field. This result generalizes the result of Heath-Brown who established the statement in the smooth case. Our argument is built upon the ideas of Colliot-Thélène and the fibration method for zero-cycles in the form of Harpaz-Wittenberg.

Abstract:A $3$-fold and a $5$-fold quadratic Pfister forms are canonically associated to every symplectic involution on a central simple algebra of degree $8$ over a field of characteristic $2$. The same construction on central simple algebras of degree $4$ associates to every unitary involution a $2$-fold and a $4$-fold Pfister quadratic forms, and to every orthogonal involution a $1$-fold and a $3$-fold quasi-Pfister forms. These forms hold structural information on the algebra with involution.

Abstract:We recall the notion of a quadratic form parameter $Q$ over the integers and of extended quadratic forms with values in $Q$, which we call $Q$-forms. Certain form parameters $Q$ appeared in Wall's work on the classification of almost closed $(q{-}1)$-connected $2q$-manifolds via $Q$-forms. The algebraic theory of general form parameters and extended quadratic forms has been studied in a variety of far more general settings by authors including Bak, Baues, Ranicki and Schlichting.

Abstract:We construct an infinite family of hyperovals on the Klein quadric $Q^+(5,q)$, $q$ even. The construction makes use of ovoids of the symplectic generalized quadrangle $W(q)$ that is associated with an elliptic quadric which arises as solid intersection with $Q^+(5,q)$. We also solve the isomorphism problem: we determine necessary and sufficient conditions for two hyperovals arising from the construction to be isomorphic.

Abstract:We describe a new method of weaving a model of the Klein quartic, a highly symmetric, but abstract genus-3 surface akin to a platonic polyhedron, with negatively-curved geometry. The Klein quartic cannot be realized in its fully symmetric form in three-dimensional space, but this model exhibits the most rigid symmetry that is possible. With remarkably little time and material you can have a Klein quartic of your own!

Abstract:We introduce abacus diagrams that describe minimal length coset representatives in affine Weyl groups of types B, C, and D. These abacus diagrams use a realization of the affine Weyl group of type C due to Eriksson to generalize a construction of James for the symmetric group. We also describe several combinatorial models for these parabolic quotients that generalize classical results in affine type A related to core partitions.

Some model theory of quadratic geometries

Abstract:Orthogonal spaces are vector spaces together with a quadratic form whose associated bilinear form is non-degenerate. Over fields of characteristic two, there are many quadratic forms associated to a given bilinear form and quadratic geometries are structures that encode a vector space over a field of characteristic 2 with a non-degenerate bilinear form together with a space of associated quadratic forms. These structures over finite fields of characteristic 2 form an important part of the basic geometries that appear in the Lie coordinatizable structures of Cherlin and Hrushovski. We (a) describe the respective model companions of the theory of orthogonal spaces and the theory of quadratic geometries and (b) classify the pseudo-finite completions of these theories. We also (c) give a neostability-theoretic classification of the model companions and these pseudo-finite completions. This is a small step towards understanding the analogue of the Cherlin-Hrushovski theory of Lie coordinatizable structures in a setting where the involved fields may be pseudo-finite.

Abstract:The Witt group of skew hermitian forms over a division algebra $D$ with symplectic involution is shown to be canonically isomorphic to the Witt group of symmetric bilinear forms over the Severi-Brauer variety of $D$ with values in a suitable line bundle. In the special case where $D$ is a quaternion algebra we extend previous work by Pfister and by Parimala on the Witt group of conics to set up two five-terms exact sequences relating the Witt groups of hermitian or skew-hermitian forms over $D$ with the Witt groups of the center, of the function field of the Severi-Brauer conic of $D$, and of the residue fields at each closed point of the conic.

Quatroids and Rational Plane Cubics

Abstract:It is a classical result that there are $12$ (irreducible) rational cubic curves through $8$ generic points in $\mathbb{P}_{\mathbb{C}}^2$, but little is known about the non-generic cases. The space of $8$-point configurations is partitioned into strata depending on combinatorial objects we call quatroids, a higher-order version of representable matroids. We compute all $779777$ quatroids on eight distinct points in the plane, which produces a full description of the stratification. For each stratum, we generate several invariants, including the number of rational cubics through a generic configuration. As a byproduct of our investigation, we obtain a collection of results regarding the base loci of pencils of cubics and positive certificates for non-rationality.

Hyperbolic geometry and real moduli of five points on the line

Abstract:We show that each connected component of the moduli space of smooth real binary quintics is isomorphic to an arithmetic quotient of an open subset of the real hyperbolic plane. Moreover, our main result says that the induced metric on this moduli space extends to a complete real hyperbolic orbifold structure on the space of stable real binary quintics. This turns the moduli space of stable real binary quintics into a real two-dimensional ball quotient, whose fundamental domain is given by the hyperbolic triangle of angles $\pi/3, \pi/5$ and $\pi/10$, and whose fundamental group is non-arithmetic.

Dembowski's Theorem on Finite Inversive Planes of Even Order

Abstract:A remarkable theorem due to Peter Dembowski states that if $I$ is an inversive plane of even order $q$ then $q$ must be a power of two and $I$ must be the incidence system of points versus plane ovals in an ovoid in the projective $3$-space over the field of order $q$. In this paper we present a short and self-contained proof of this result. Our proof depends on the classification due to Benson of the symmetric and regular finite generalized quadrangles. Included here is a deduction of Benson's Theorem from the Dembowski-Wagner combinatorial characterization of finite projective geometries.

Spherical Witt vectors and integral models for spaces

Abstract:We give a new construction of the spherical Witt vector functor of Lurie and Burklund-Schlank-Yuan and extend it to nonconnective objects using synthetic spectra and recent work of Holeman. The spherical Witt vectors are used to build spherical versions of perfect $\lambda$-rings and to motivate new results in Grothendieck's schematization program, building on work of Ekedahl, Kriz, Mandell, Lurie, Quillen, Sullivan, Toën, and Yuan. In particular, there is an $\infty$-category of perfect derived $\lambda$-rings with trivializations of the Adams operations $\psi^p$ for all $p$ such that the functor sending a space $X$ to its integral cochains on $X$, viewed as such a derived $\lambda$-ring, is fully faithful on a large class of nilpotent spaces. Our theorem is closely related to recent work of Horel and Kubrak-Shuklin-Zakharov. Finally, we answer two questions of Yuan on spherical cochains.

Explicit construction of a plane sextic model for genus-five Howe curves, II

Abstract:A Howe curve is defined as the normalization of the fiber product over a projective line of two hyperelliptic curves. Howe curves are very useful to produce important classes of curves over fields of positive characteristic, e.g., maximal, superspecial, or supersingular ones. Determining their feasible equations explicitly is a basic problem, and it has been solved in the hyperelliptic case and in the non-hyperelliptic case with genus not greater than $4$. In this paper, we construct an explicit plane sextic model for non-hyperelliptic Howe curves of genus $5$. We also determine the number and type of singularities on our sextic model, and prove that the singularities are generically $4$ double points. Our results together with Moriya-Kudo's recent ones imply that for each $s \in \{2,3,4,5\}$, there exists a non-hyperellptic curve $H$ of genus $5$ with $\mathrm{Aut}(H) \supset \mathbf{V}_4$ such that its associated plane sextic has $s$ double points.

On Projective Planes of Order 16 Associated with 1-rotational 2-(52, 4, 1) Designs

Abstract:A maximal arc of degree k in a finite projective plane P of order q = ks is a set of (q-s+1)k points that meets every line of P in either k or 0 points. The collection of the nonempty intersections of a maximal arc with the lines of P is a resolvable Steiner 2-((q-s+1)k, k, 1) design. Necessary and sufficient conditions for a resolvable Steiner 2- design to be embeddable as a maximal arc in a projective plane were proved recently in [8]. Steiner designs associated with maximal arcs in the known projective planes of order 16 were analyzed in [6], where it was shown that some of the associated designs are embeddable in two non-isomorphic planes. Using MAGMA, we conducted an analysis to ascertain whether any of the 22 non-isomorphic 1-rotational 2-(52,4,1) designs, previously classified in [3], could be embedded in maximal arcs of degree 4 within projective planes of order 16. This paper presents a summary of our findings, revealing that precisely only one out of the the twenty-two 1-rotational designs from [3] is embeddable in a plane of order 16, being the Desarguesian plane P G(2, 16).

Abstract:The ten pairs of directly similar triangles in perspective in the Wood-Desargues' configuration have ten common Hagge circle centres. These centres are known to lie one each of the ten perspectrices. It is shown in this paper that these centres also lie at the vertices of five cyclic quadrangles, which are similar to the five cyclic quadrangles of the initial Wood-Desargues' configuration and that these five new cyclic quadrangles have a common circumradius.
