Abstract:We give a $K$-theoretic account of the basic properties of Witt vectors. Along the way we re-prove basic properties of the little-known Witt vector norm, give a characterization of Witt vectors in terms of algebraic $K$-theory, and a presentation of the Witt vectors that is useful for computation.

Abstract:Our main goal in this paper is to prove results for Witt vectors in the almost category. To do so, we spend the first section developing almost ring theory, as detailed in Gabber and Ramero's book on Almost Ring Theory. We have tried to keep the exposition linear and digestable in order for the reader to grasp necessities and appreciate their usability. We finish with an application to almost purity, in particular offering a new proof for perfectoid rings with a rank one valuation.

Abstract:We establish dimension formulas for the Witt vector affine Springer fibers associated to a reductive group over a mixed characteristic local field, under the assumption that the group is essentially tamely ramified and the residue characteristic is not bad. Besides the discriminant valuations that show up in classical works on the usual affine Springer fibers, our formula also involves the Artin conductors and the Kottwitz invariants of the relevant conjugacy classes.

Abstract:One way to define Witt vectors starts with a truncation poset $S \subset \mathbb{N}$. We generalize Witt vectors to truncation posets, and show how three types of maps of truncation posets can be used to encode the following six structure maps on Witt vectors: addition, multiplication, restriction, Frobenius, Verschiebung and norm.

Abstract:Let $K$ be an arbitrary infinite field. The cohomology group $H^2(SL(2,K), H_2\,SL(2,K))$ contains the class of the universal central extension. When studying representations of fundamental groups of surfaces in $SL(2,K)$ it is useful to have classes stable under deformations (Fenchel--Nielsen twists) of representations. We identify the maximal quotient of the universal class which is stable under twists as the Witt class of Nekovar. The Milnor--Wood inequality asserts that an $SL(2,{\bf R})$-bundle over a surface of genus $g$ admits a flat structure if and only if its Euler number is $\leq (g-1)$. We establish an analog of this inequality, and a saturation result for the Witt class. The result is sharp for the field of rationals, but not sharp in general.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a scheme. Let $r \geq 2$ be an integer. Denote by $W_r(X)$ the scheme of Witt vectors of length $r$, built out of $X$. We are concerned with the question of extending (=lifting) vector bundles on $X$, to vector bundles on $W_r(X)$-promoting a systematic use of Witt modules and Witt vector bundles. To begin with, we investigate two elementary but significant cases, in which the answer to this question is positive: line bundles, and the tautological vector bundle of a projective bundle over an affine base. We then offer a simple (re)formulation of classical results in deformation theory of smooth varieties over a field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$, and extend them to reduced $k$-schemes. Some of these results were recently recovered, in another form, by Stefan Schröer. As an application, we prove that the tautological vector bundle of the Grassmannian $Gr_{\mathbb{F}_p}(m,n)$ does not extend to $W_2(Gr_{\mathbb{F}_p}(m,n))$, if $2 \leq m \leq n-2$. To conclude, we establish a connection to the work of Zdanowicz, on non-liftability of some projective bundles.

Abstract:The aim of this article is to prove some results on the existence of an integral extension domain of a complete local Noetherian domain in mixed characteristic $p>0$ having certain distinguished properties with respect to the Frobenius map. We prove the main results by constructing required extension domains via Witt vectors and the method of maximal étale extensions. It is worth remarking that the resulting algebras have deep connections with the homological conjectures and the rings in $p$-adic Hodge theory.

Abstract:We obtain exhaustive classification of inequivalent realizations of the Witt and Virasoro algebras by Lie vector fields of differential operators in the space $\mathbb{R}^3$. Using this classification we describe all inequivalent realizations of the direct sum of the Witt algebras in $\mathbb{R}^3$. These results enable constructing all possible (1+1)-dimensional classically integrable equations that admit infinite dimensional symmetry algebra isomorphic to the Witt or the direct sum of Witt algebras. In this way the new classically integrable nonlinear PDE in one spatial dimension has been obtained. In addition, we construct a number of new nonlinear (1+1)-dimensional PDEs admitting infinite symmetries.
On a universal characterisation of $p$-typical Witt vectors

Abstract:For a prime $p$ and a commutative ring $R$ with unity, let $W(R)$ denote the ring of $p$-typical Witt vectors. The ring $W(R)$ is endowed with a Verschiebung operator $W(R)\xrightarrow{V}W(R)$ and a Teichmüller map $R\xrightarrow{\langle \ \rangle}W(R)$. One of the properties satisfied by $V, \langle \ \rangle$ is that the map $R \to W(R)$ given by $x\mapsto V\langle x^p\rangle - p\langle x \rangle$ is an additive map. In this paper we show that for $p\neq 2$, this property essentially characterises the functor $W$. Unlike other characterisations, this only uses the group structure on $W(R)$ and hence is suitable for generalising to the non-commutative setup. We give a conjectural characterisation of Hesselholt's functor of $p$-typical Witt vectors using a universal property for $p\neq 2$. Moreover we provide evidence for this conjecture.

Abstract:We give a universal property of the construction of the ring of $p$-typical Witt vectors of a commutative ring, endowed with Witt vectors Frobenius and Verschiebung, and generalize this construction to the derived setting. We define an $\infty$-category of $p$-typical derived $\delta$-Cartier rings and show that the derived ring of $p$-typical Witt vectors of a derived ring is naturally an object in this $\infty$-category. Moreover, we show that for any prime $p$, the formation of the derived ring of $p$-typical Witt vectors gives an equivalence between the $\infty$-category of all derived rings and the full subcategory of all derived $p$-typical $\delta$-Cartier rings consisting of $V$-complete objects.

Spherical Witt vectors and integral models for spaces

Abstract:We give a new construction of the spherical Witt vector functor of Lurie and Burklund-Schlank-Yuan and extend it to nonconnective objects using synthetic spectra and recent work of Holeman. The spherical Witt vectors are used to build spherical versions of perfect $\lambda$-rings and to motivate new results in Grothendieck's schematization program, building on work of Ekedahl, Kriz, Mandell, Lurie, Quillen, Sullivan, Toën, and Yuan. In particular, there is an $\infty$-category of perfect derived $\lambda$-rings with trivializations of the Adams operations $\psi^p$ for all $p$ such that the functor sending a space $X$ to its integral cochains on $X$, viewed as such a derived $\lambda$-ring, is fully faithful on a large class of nilpotent spaces. Our theorem is closely related to recent work of Horel and Kubrak-Shuklin-Zakharov. Finally, we answer two questions of Yuan on spherical cochains.

Witt invariants of Weyl groups

Abstract:We describe the Witt invariants of a Weyl group over a field $k_0$ by giving generators for the $W(k_0)$-module of Witt invariants, under the assumption that the characteristic of $k_0$ does not divide the order of the group. For the Weyl groups of types $B_n$, $C_n$, $D_n$, and $G_2$, we show that the Witt invariants are generated as a $W(k_0)$-algebra by trace forms and their exterior powers, extending a result due to Serre in type $A_n$. Many of our computational methods are applicable to computing Witt invariants of any smooth linear algebraic group over $k_0$, including a technique for lifting module generators from cohomological invariants to Witt invariants.

Abstract:The purpose of this this paper is to generalize the functors arising from the theory of Witt vectors duto to Cartier. Given a polynomial $g(q)\in \mathbb Z[q]$, we construct a functor ${\overline {W}}^{g(q)}$ from the category of $\mathbb Z[q]$-algebras to that of commutative rings. When $q$ is specialized into an integer $m$, it produces a functor from the category of commutative rings with unity to that of commutative rings. In a similar way, we also construct several functors related to ${\overline { W}}^{g(q)}$. Functorial and structural properties such as induction, restriction, classification and unitalness will be investigated intensively.

Abstract:For a discrete valuation ring $R$ with quotient field $K$ and residue field $F$ both of characteristic not 2, we study low-dimensional quadratic forms with Witt class in the $n$-th power of the fundamental ideal of $F$ resp. $K$ and point out connections between forms over these fields. We analyse the minimal number of Pfister forms such that a given form is Witt equivalent to the sum of these and study forms congruent modulo a higher power of the fundamental ideal towards similarity.

Abstract:The main scope of this short paper is to provide a modification of the axioms given by Messmer and Wood for the theory of separably closed fields of positive characteristic and finite imperfectness degree. The original axioms failed to meet natural expectations, and therefore a new axiomatization was given (i.e. Ziegler's one), but the new axioms do not follow the initial idea of Messmer and Wood. Therefore, we aim to give a correct axiomatization which is more similar to the original one and which, as the original axioms,involves only one Hasse-Schmidt derivation, this time based on the iterativity conditions corresponding to the Witt group.

Abstract:We give a direct construction of the ring spectrum of spherical Witt vectors of a perfect $\mathbb{F}_p$-algebra R as the completion of the spherical monoid algebra $\mathbb{S}[R]$ of the multiplicative monoid $(R,\cdot)$ at the ideal $I = \mathrm{fib}(\mathbb{S}[R] \to R)$. This generalizes a construction of Cuntz and Deninger. We also use this to give a description of the category of p-complete modules over the spherical Witt vectors and a universal property for spherical Witt vectors as an $\mathbb{E}_1$-ring.
