Abstract:We discuss the formalism of tautological characteristic classes of flat bundles. Applied to $PSL(2,K)$ it yields the Witt class of Nekovar. Applied to $PGL_+(2n,K)$, the general linear groups with positive determinant over an arbitrary ordered field, it yields (a generalization of) the Euler class.

Abstract:Let $K$ be an arbitrary infinite field. The cohomology group $H^2(SL(2,K), H_2\,SL(2,K))$ contains the class of the universal central extension. When studying representations of fundamental groups of surfaces in $SL(2,K)$ it is useful to have classes stable under deformations (Fenchel--Nielsen twists) of representations. We identify the maximal quotient of the universal class which is stable under twists as the Witt class of Nekovar. The Milnor--Wood inequality asserts that an $SL(2,{\bf R})$-bundle over a surface of genus $g$ admits a flat structure if and only if its Euler number is $\leq (g-1)$. We establish an analog of this inequality, and a saturation result for the Witt class. The result is sharp for the field of rationals, but not sharp in general.

Mainly, the Cartan invariants and the dimensions of indecomposable projective modules of [Formula: see text] are determined for any [Formula: see text]-character [Formula: see text] up to isomorphism.

Abstract:For a bundle of oriented closed smooth $n$-manifolds $\pi: E \to X$, the tautological class $\kappa_{\mathcal{L}_k} (E) \in H^{4k-n}(X;\mathbb{Q})$ is defined by fibre integration of the Hirzebruch class $\mathcal{L}_k (T_v E)$ of the vertical tangent bundle. More generally, given a discrete group $G$, a class $u \in H^p(B G;\mathbb{Q})$ and a map $f:E \to B G$, one has tautological classes $\kappa_{\mathcal{L}_k ,u}(E,f) \in H^{4k+p-n}(X;\mathbb{Q})$ associated to the Novikov higher signatures. For odd $n$, it is well-known that $\kappa_{\mathcal{L}_k}(E)=0$ for all bundles with $n$-dimensional fibres. The aim of this note is to show that the question whether more generally $\kappa_{\mathcal{L}_k,u}(E,f)=0$ (for odd $n$) depends sensitively on the group $G$ and the class $u$. For example, given a nonzero cohomology class $u \in H^2 (B \pi_1 (\Sigma_g);\mathbb{Q})$ of a surface group, we show that always $\kappa_{\mathcal{L}_k,u}(E,f)=0$ if $g \geq 2$, whereas sometimes $\kappa_{\mathcal{L}_k,u}(E,f)\neq 0$ if $g=1$. The vanishing theorem is obtained by a generalization of the index-theoretic proof that $\kappa_{\mathcal{L}_k}(E)=0$, while the nontriviality theorem follows with little effort from the work of Galatius and Randal-Williams on diffeomorphism groups of even-dimensional manifolds.

Abstract:Replacing symmetric powers by divided powers and working over Witt vectors instead of ground fields, I generalize Kawamatas T^1-lifting theorem to characteristic p>0. Combined with the work of Deligne-Illusie on degeneration of the Hodge-de Rham spectral sequences, this gives unobstructedness for certain Calabi-Yau varieties with free crystalline cohomology modules.

Abstract:We define real-valued characteristic classes of flat complex vector bundles, and flat real vector bundles with a duality structure. We construct pushforwards of such vector bundles with vanishing characteristic classes. These pushforwards involve the analytic torsion form in the first case and the eta form of the signature operator in the second case. We show that the pushforwards are independent of the geometric choices made in the constructions and hence are topological in nature. We give evidence that in the first case, the pushforwards are given topologically by the Becker-Gottlieb-Dold transfer.

Abstract:We first describe, over a field K of characteristic different from 2, the orbits for the adjoint actions of the Lie groups PGL(2, K) and PSL(2, K) on their Lie algebra sl(2, K). While the former are well known, the latter lead to the resolution of generalised Pell-Fermat equations which characterise the corresponding orbit. The synthetic approach enables to change the base field, and we illustrate this picture over the fields with three and five elements, in relation with the geometry of the tetrahedral and icosahedral groups. While the results may appear familiar, they do not seem to be covered in such generality or detail by the existing literature. We apply this discussion to partition the set of PSL(2, Z)-classes of integral binary quadratic forms into groups of PSL(2, K)-classes. When K = C we obtain the class groups of a given discriminant. Then we provide a complete description of their partition into PSL(2, Q)-classes in terms of Hilbert symbols, and relate this to the partition into genera. The results are classical, but our geometrical approach is of independent interest as it may yield new insights into the geometry of Gauss composition, and unify the picture over function fields. Finally we provide a geometric interpretation in the modular orbifold PSL(2, Z) \ H for when two points or two closed geodesics correspond to PSL(2, K)-equivalent quadratic forms, in terms of hyperbolic distances and angles between those modular cycles. These geometric quantities are related to linking numbers of modular knots. Their distribution properties could be studied using the geometry of the quadratic lattice (sl(2, Z), det) but such investigations are not pursued here.

The Star Formation History of the Blue Compact Dwarf Galaxy UGCA 290

Abstract:We present the star formation history of UGCA 290, a galaxy with properties intermediate between Blue Compact Dwarfs and Dwarf Irregulars. This galaxy is particularly interesting because its young stellar population is extremely similar to that of the well-studied type iE Blue Compact Dwarf VII Zw 403, despite its different spatial morphology and old stellar content. Our Hubble Space Telescope/Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 single-star photometry for UGCA 290 extends over nine magnitudes in I, and allows a detailed study of its star formation history. Using synthetic color-magnitude diagrams, we show that the recent "burst" which gives this galaxy its BCD status is a moderate enhancement in star formation which lasted for approximately 20 Myr, at a rate about ten times above its previous rate. The star formation history for most of the previous billion years is consistent with a constant rate, although enhancements as large as the current one are possible at times ealier than 400 Myr ago. We estimate that the total mass converted into stars in UGCA 290 more than one billion years ago is about three times the astrated mass since that time. The initial mass function is consistent with a Salpeter slope, and the stellar metallicity is bracketed by Z_sun/50 and Z_sun/5, with evidence for metallicity evolution. Similar results for the star formation history over the past 600 Myr apply to VII Zw 403. Our main result is that despite the traditional picture of BCDs, the current bursts in these two galaxies are neither remarkably intense nor short-lived, and that most of their star formation occured more than a billion years ago.

Compactly supported $\mathbb{A}^1$-Euler characteristics of symmetric powers of cellular varieties

Abstract:The compactly supported $\mathbb{A}^1$-Euler characteristic, introduced by Hoyois and later refined by Levine and others, is an anologue in motivic homotopy theory of the classical Euler characteristic of complex topological manifolds. It is an invariant on the Grothendieck ring of varieties $\mathrm{K}_0(\mathrm{Var}_k)$ taking values in the Grothendieck-Witt ring $\mathrm{GW}(k)$ of the base field $k$. The former ring has a natural power structure induced by symmetric powers of varieties. In a recent preprint, Pajwani and Pál construct a power structure on $\mathrm{GW}(k)$ and show that the compactly supported $\mathbb{A}^1$-Euler characteristic respects these two power structures for $0$-dimensional varieties, or equivalently étale $k$-algebras. In this paper, we define the class $\mathrm{Sym}_k$ of symmetrisable varieties to be those varieties for which the compactly supported $\mathbb{A}^1$-Euler characteristic respects the power structures and study the algebraic properties of $\mathrm{K}_0(\mathrm{Sym}_k)$. We show that it includes all cellular varieties, and even linear varieties as introduced by Totaro. Moreover, we show that it includes non-linear varieties such as elliptic curves. As an application of our main result, we compute the compactly supported $\mathbb{A}^1$-Euler characteristics of symmetric powers of Grassmannians and certain del Pezzo surfaces.

Abstract:We discuss Euler characteristics for finitely generated modules over Iwasawa algebras. We show that the Euler characteristic of a module is well-defined whenever the 0th homology group is finite if and only if the relevant compact p-adic Lie group is finite-by-nilpotent and that in this case all pseudo-null modules have trivial Euler characteristic. We also prove some other results relating to the triviality of Euler characteristics for pseudo-null modules. We also prove some analogous results for the Akashi series of Coates et al.

Generalized complex structure on certain principal torus bundles

Abstract:A principal torus bundle over a complex manifold with even dimensional fiber and characteristic class of type $(1,1)$ admits a family of regular generalized complex structures (GCS) with the fibers as leaves of the associated symplectic foliation. We show that such a generalized complex structure is equivalent to the product of the complex structure on the base and the symplectic structure on the fiber in a tubular neighborhood of an arbitrary fiber if and only if the bundle is flat. This has consequences for the generalized Dolbeault cohomology of the bundle that includes a Künneth formula. On a more general note, if a principal bundle over a complex manifold with a symplectic structure group admits a GCS with the fibers of the bundle as leaves of the associated symplectic foliation, and the GCS is equivalent to a product GCS in a neighborhood of every fiber, then the bundle is flat and symplectic.

Abstract:A $\mathbf{GL}$-variety is a (typically infinite dimensional) variety modeled on the polynomial representation theory of the general linear group. In previous work, we studied these varieties in characteristic 0. In this paper, we obtain results in positive characteristic: for example, we prove a version of Chevalley's theorem on constructible sets. We give an application of our theory to strength of polynomials.

Abstract:In this paper, we construct a categorical double quantum Heisenberg action on the representation category of finite classical groups $\mathrm{O}_{2n+1}(q)$, $\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}(q)$ and $\mathrm{O}^{\pm}_{2n}(q)$ with $q$ odd. Over a field of characteristic zero or characteristic $\ell$ with $\ell\nmid q(q-1)$, we deduce a categorical action of a Kac-Moody algebra $\mathfrak{s}\mathfrak{l}'_{I_+}\oplus\mathfrak{s}\mathfrak{l}'_{I_-}$ on the representation category of finite classical groups. We show that the colored weight functions $\mathbb{O}^+(u)(\bullet)$, $\mathbb{O}^-(v)(\bullet)$ and uniform projection can distinguish all irreducible characters of finite classical groups. In particular, the colored weight functions are complete invariants of quadratic unipotent characters of finite classical groups. We also show that using the theta correspondence and extra symmetries of categorical double quantum Heisenberg action, the Kac-Moody action on the Grothendieck group of the whole category can be determined explicitly.
Bushnell-Kutzko types for $P$-ordinary automorphic representations on unitary groups

Abstract:This paper generalizes a theorem of Hida on the structure of ordinary representations on unitary groups to $P$-ordinary representations, where $P$ is a general parabolic subgroup of some general linear group. When $P$ is minimal, we recover Hida's theorem which asserts that ordinary subspaces are 1-dimensional. While analogous $P$-ordinary subspaces are infinite-dimensional in general, we use the theory of Bushnell-Kutzko types to canonically associate a finite-dimensional type to the representation (under minor assumptions) that has multiplicity one in its $P$-ordinary subspace. We simultaneous develop the theory of modular forms on unitary groups with $P$-Iwahoric level structure whose nebentypus is a type (instead of a character) and construct lattices of $P$-ordinary modular forms inside $P$-ordinary automorphic representations. We also obtain direct consequences for the dual notion of $P$-anti-ordinary forms and representations.

Abstract:The tautological ring $R^*(M)$ of a smooth manifold $M$ is the ring of characteristic classes generated by the Miller-Morita-Mumford classes, and is often more accessible than the ring of all characteristic classes of smooth $M$-bundles. In this paper, we show that the Krull dimension of the tautological ring vanishes for almost all manifolds homotopy equivalent to $\mathbb{H} P^2$ through a combination of new methods in rational homotopy theory developed by Alexander Berglund and the family signature theorem.

Equivariant Vector Bundles on the Drinfeld Upper Half Space over a Local Field of Positive Characteristic

Abstract:We describe the locally analytic $\mathrm{GL}_d(K)$-representations which arise as the global sections of homogeneous vector bundles on the projective space restricted to the Drinfeld upper half space over a non-archimedean local field $K$. We thereby generalize work of Orlik (2008) for $p$-adic fields to the effect that it becomes applicable to local fields of positive characteristic. Our description of this space of global sections is in terms of a filtration by subrepresentations, and a characterization of the resulting subquotients via adaptations of the functors $\mathcal{F}^G_P$ considered by Orlik-Strauch (2015) and Agrawal-Strauch (2022). For a local field $K$ of positive characteristic, we also determine the locally analytic (resp. continuous) characters of $K^\times$ with values in $K$-Banach algebras which are integral domains (resp. with values in finite extensions of $K$) in an appendix.

Abstract:A $3$-fold and a $5$-fold quadratic Pfister forms are canonically associated to every symplectic involution on a central simple algebra of degree $8$ over a field of characteristic $2$. The same construction on central simple algebras of degree $4$ associates to every unitary involution a $2$-fold and a $4$-fold Pfister quadratic forms, and to every orthogonal involution a $1$-fold and a $3$-fold quasi-Pfister forms. These forms hold structural information on the algebra with involution.
