Abstract:We provide a description of initial ideals for almost complete intersections generated by powers of general linear forms and prove that WLP in a fixed degree $d$ holds when the number of variables $n$ is sufficiently large compared to $d$. In particular, we show that if $n\geq 3d-2$ then WLP holds for the ideal generated by squares at the degree $d$ spot and for $n\ge \frac{3d-3}{2}$ WLP holds for ideal generated by cubes at the degree $d$ spot. Finally, we prove that WLP fails for the ideal generated by squares when $n< 3d -2$ at the $d$th spot by finding an explicit element in the kernel of the multiplication by a general linear form. This shows that our bound on $n$ is sharp in the case of the squares.

Abstract:We examine the maximum dimension of a linear system of plane cubic curves whose $\mathbb{F}_q$-members are all geometrically irreducible. Computational evidence suggests that such a system has a maximum (projective) dimension of $3$. As a step towards the conjecture, we prove that there exists a $3$-dimensional linear system $\mathcal{L}$ with at most one geometrically reducible $\mathbb{F}_q$-member.

Abstract:Ideals $I\subseteq R=k[\mathbb P^n]$ generated by powers of linear forms arise, via Macaulay duality, from sets of fat points $X\subseteq \mathbb P^n$. Properties of $R/I$ are connected to the geometry of the corresponding fat points. When the linear forms are general, many authors have studied the question of whether or not $R/I$ has the Weak Lefschetz Property (WLP). We study this question instead for ideals coming from a family of sets of points called grids. We give a complete answer in the case of uniform powers of linear forms coming from square grids, and we give a conjecture and approach for the case of nonsquare grids. In the cases where WLP holds, we also describe the non-Lefschetz locus.

Abstract:An algebraic classification is given for spaces of holomorphic vector-valued modular forms of arbitrary real weight and multiplier system, associated to irreducible, T-unitarizable representations of the full modular group, of dimension less than six. For representations of dimension less than four, it is shown that the associated space of vector-valued modular forms is a cyclic module over a certain skew polynomial ring of differential operators. For dimensions four and five, a complete list of possible Hilbert-Poincare series is given, using the fact that the space of vector-valued modular forms is a free module over the ring of classical modular forms for the full modular group. A mild restriction is then placed on the class of representation considered in these dimensions, and this again yields an explicit determination of the associated Hilbert-Poincare series.

Abstract:Given a smooth genus three curve $C$, the moduli space of rank two stable vector bundles on C with trivial determinant embeds in $\mathbb{P}^8$ as a hypersurface whose singular locus is the Kummer threefold of $C$; this hypersurface is the Coble quartic. Gruson, Sam and Weyman realized that this quartic could be constructed from a general skew-symmetric fourform in eight variables. Using the lines contained in the quartic, we prove that a similar construction allows to recover SU$_C(2, L)$, the moduli space of rank two stable vector bundles on C with fixed determinant of odd degree L, as a subvariety of $G(2, 8)$. In fact, each point $p \in C$ defines a natural embedding of SU$_C(2, \mathcal{O}(p))$ in $G(2, 8)$. We show that, for the generic such embedding, there exists a unique quadratic section of the Grassmannian which is singular exactly along the image of SU$_C(2, \mathcal{O}(p))$, and thus deserves to be coined the Coble quadric of the pointed curve $(C, p)$.

Moduli of codimension two linear sections of subadjoint varieties

Abstract:Let $G$ be a simple algebraic group of type $F_{4}$, $E_{6}$, $E_{7}$ or $E_{8}$, and let $\mathfrak{g}$ be its Lie algebra. The adjoint variety $X_{ad} \subseteq \mathbb{P} \mathfrak{g}$ is defined as the unique closed orbit of the adjoint action of $G$ on $\mathbb{P}\mathfrak{g}$. $X_{ad}$ is a Fano contact manifold covered by lines in $\mathbb{P} \mathfrak{g}$. The subadjoint variety $S \subseteq \mathbb{P} W$ is denoted by the variety of lines on $X_{ad}$ through a fixed point $x$, where $W \subseteq T_{x}X$ is taken as the contact hyperplane. It follows from a result in representation theory of Vinberg that the GIT quotient space of codimension two linear sections of $S$ is isomorphic to the weighted projective space $\mathbb{P}(1,3,4,6)$. In this note, we investigate the problem of finding a geometric interpretation of the above isomorphism. As a main result, for each $\mathfrak{g}$ of the above type, we construct a natural open embedding of the GIT quotient space of nonsingular codimension two linear sections of $S$ into $\mathbb{P}(1,3,4,6)$ whose complement is a fixed hypersurface of degree 12. The key ingredient of our construction is to apply a correspondence of Bahargava and Ho which relates the above moduli problem to a moduli problem on curves of genus one.

Remarks on the geometry of the variety of planes of a cubic fivefold

Abstract:This note presents some properties of the variety of planes $F_2(X)\subset G(3,7)$ of a cubic $5$-fold $X\subset \mathbb P^6$. A cotangent bundle exact sequence is first derived from the remark made by Iliev and Manivel that $F_2(X)$ sits as a Lagrangian subvariety of the variety of lines of a cubic $4$-fold, which is a hyperplane section of $X$. Using the sequence, the Gauss map of $F_2(X)$ is then proven to be an embedding. The last section is devoted to the relation between the variety of osculating planes of a cubic $4$-fold and the variety of planes of the associated cyclic cubic $5$-fold.

Abstract:A $3$-fold and a $5$-fold quadratic Pfister forms are canonically associated to every symplectic involution on a central simple algebra of degree $8$ over a field of characteristic $2$. The same construction on central simple algebras of degree $4$ associates to every unitary involution a $2$-fold and a $4$-fold Pfister quadratic forms, and to every orthogonal involution a $1$-fold and a $3$-fold quasi-Pfister forms. These forms hold structural information on the algebra with involution.

Abstract:We study simple Lie algebras generated by extremal elements, over arbitrary fields of arbitrary characteristic. We show: (1) If the extremal geometry contains lines, then the Lie algebra admits a $5 \times 5$-grading that can be parametrized by a cubic norm structure; (2) If there exists a field extension of degree at most $2$ such that the extremal geometry over that field extension contains lines, and in addition, there exist symplectic pairs of extremal elements, then the Lie algebra admits a $5 \times 5$-grading that can be parametrized by a quadrangular algebra. One of our key tools is a new definition of exponential maps that makes sense even over fields of characteristic $2$ and $3$, which ought to be interesting in its own right.

Abstract:A generalisation of Waring's problem, considered first by Arkhipov and Karatsuba, is the question of representing not an integer, but a given polynomial, as a sum of powers of linear polynomials. We investigate a related problem and prove a Hasse principle for the number of identical representations of a set of given forms by homogeneous polynomials of general shape. The result leads to sizeable improvements for estimates of the number of linear spaces on the intersection of hypersurfaces.

Abstract:It is a classical result that there are $12$ (irreducible) rational cubic curves through $8$ generic points in $\mathbb{P}_{\mathbb{C}}^2$, but little is known about the non-generic cases. The space of $8$-point configurations is partitioned into strata depending on combinatorial objects we call quatroids, a higher-order version of representable matroids. We compute all $779777$ quatroids on eight distinct points in the plane, which produces a full description of the stratification. For each stratum, we generate several invariants, including the number of rational cubics through a generic configuration. As a byproduct of our investigation, we obtain a collection of results regarding the base loci of pencils of cubics and positive certificates for non-rationality.

Abstract:We consider the polynomial ring in finitely many variables over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic, and initiate the systematic study of ideals preserved by the action of the general linear group by changes of coordinates. We show that these ideals are classified by sets of carry patterns, which are finite sequences of integers introduced by Doty in the study of representation theory of the polynomial ring. We provide an algorithm to decompose an invariant ideal as a sum of carry ideals with no redundancies. Next, we study the conditions under which one carry ideal is contained in another, and completely characterize the image of the multiplication map between the space of linear forms and a subrepresentation of forms of degree d. Finally, we begin an investigation into free resolutions of these ideals. Our results are most explicit in the case of carry ideals in two variables, where we completely describe the monomial generators and syzygies using base-p expansions of the parameters involved, and we provide a formula for the structure of the Tor modules in the Grothendieck group of representations.

Abstract:For a general cubic fourfold $X \subset \mathbb{P}^5$, we compute the Hodge numbers of the locus $S \subset F$ of lines of second type. We also give an upper bound of 6 for the degree of irrationality of the Fano scheme of lines of any smooth cubic hypersurface.

Abstract:This paper is a contribution towards a solution for the longstanding open problem of classifying linear systems of conics over finite fields initiated by L. E. Dickson in 1908, through his study of the projective equivalence classes of pencils of conics in $\mathrm{PG}(2,q)$, for $q$ odd. In this paper a set of complete invariants is determined for the projective equivalence classes of webs and of squabs of conics in $\mathrm{PG}(2,q)$, both for $q$ odd and even. Our approach is mainly geometric, and involves a comprehensive study of the geometric and combinatorial properties of the Veronese surface in $\mathrm{PG}(5,q)$. The main contribution is the determination of the distribution of the different types of hyperplanes incident with the $K$-orbit representatives of points and lines of $\mathrm{PG}(5,q)$, where $K\cong\mathrm{PGL}(3,q)$, is the subgroup of $\mathrm{PGL}(6,q)$ stabilizing the Veronese surface.

Abstract:A degree $d$ genus $g$ cover of the complex projective line by a smooth curve $C$ yields a vector bundle on the projective line by pushforward of the structure sheaf. Which bundles are possible? Equivalently, which $\mathbb{P}^{d-2}$-bundles over $\mathbb{P}^1$ contain such covers? (In the language of many previous papers: what are the scrollar invariants of the cover?) We give a complete answer in degree $4$, which exhibits the expected pathologies. We describe a polytope (one per degree) which we propose gives the complete answer for primitive covers, i.e. covers that don't factor through a subcover. We show that all such bundles (for primitive covers) lie in this polytope, and that a ``positive proportion'' of the polytope arises from smooth covers. Moreover, we show the necessity of the primitivity assumption. Finally, we show that the map from the Hurwitz space of smooth covers to the space of bundles is not flat (for $d>3$ and $g \gg_d 0$).
