We show results devoted to smooth plane quartics that are invariant under the action of the elementary abelian group of type $[2,2,2]$, and we study geometric properties of the smooth plane quartic having automorphism group of order $48$.

Abstract:It is known that the moduli space of plane quartic curves is birational to an arithmetic quotient of a 6-dimensional complex ball. In this paper, we shall show that there exists a 15-dimensional space of meromorphic automorphic forms on the complex ball which gives a birational embedding of the moduli space of plane quartics with level 2 structure into 14-dimensional projective space. This map coincides with the one given by Coble by using Gopel invariants.

Abstract:We describe the invariants of plane quartic curves -- nonhyperelliptic genus 3 curves in their canonical model -- as determined by Dixmier and Ohno, with application to the classification of curves with given structure. In particular, we determine modular equations for the strata in the moduli space $\Me_3$ of plane quartics which have at least seven hyperflexes, and obtain an computational characterization of curves in these strata.

Abstract:In this work we compute the Dixmier invariants and bitangents of the plane quartics with 3,6 or 9-cyclic automorphisms, we find that a quartic curve with 6-cyclic automorphism will have 3 horizontal bitangents which form an asysgetic triple. We also discuss the linear matrix representation problem of such curves, and find a degree 6 equation of 1 variable which solves the symbolic solution of the linear matrix representation problem for the curve with 6-cyclic automorphism.

Abstract:The main goal of this article is to expand the theory of invariants of Artin-Schreier curves by giving a complete classification in genus 3 and 4. To achieve this goal, we first establish standard forms of Artin-Schreier curves and determine all isomorphisms between curves in this form. We then compute reconstructing systems of invariants for curves in each connected component of the strata of the moduli spaces for Artin-Schreier curves of genus 3 and 4 for $p>2$.

Bitangents to symmetric quartics

Abstract:Recall that a non-singular planar quartic is a canonically embedded non-hyperelliptic curve of genus three. We say such a curve is symmetric if it admits non-trivial automorphisms. The classification of (necessarily finite) groups appearing as automorphism groups of non-singular curves of genus three dates back to the last decade of the 19th century. As these groups act on the quartic via projective linear transformations, they induce symmetries on the 28 bitangents. Given such an automorphism group $G=\mathrm{Aut}(C)$, we prove the $G$-orbits of the bitangents are independent of the choice of $C$, and we compute them for all twelve types of smooth symmetric planar quartic curves. We further observe that techniques deriving from equivariant homotopy theory directly reveal patterns which are not obvious from a classical moduli perspective.

Abstract:The present paper gives an explicit classification of the isomorphism classes of non-hyperelliptic genus 4 curves over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0. A non-hyperelliptic genus 4 curve lies on a quadric in $\mathbb{P^3}$ of rank 3 or 4. In the case of rank 3, we give a set of 60 invariants which classify the isomorphism classes, and in the case of rank 4, we find 65 invariants. These invariants are defined by transvectants and can be efficiently computed on a given example.

Abstract:Given a germ of a smooth plane curve $(\{f(x,y)=0\},0)\subset (\mathbb K^2,0), \mathbb K=\mathbb R, \mathbb C$, with an isolated singularity, we define two invariants $I_f$ and $V_f\in \mathbb N\cup\{\infty\}$ which count the number of inflections and vertices (suitably interpreted in the complex case) concentrated at the singular point; the first is an affine invariant and the second is invariant under similarities of $\mathbb R^2$, and their analogue for $\mathbb C^2$. We show that for almost all representations of $f$, in the sense that their complement is of infinite codimension, these invariants are finite. Indeed when the curve has no smooth components they are always finite and bounded and we can be much more explicit about the values they can attain; the set of possible values is of course an analytic invariant of $f$. We illustrate our results by computing these invariants for Arnold's $\mathcal K$-simple singularities as well as singularities that have ${\mathcal A}$-simple parametrisations. We also obtain a relationship between these invariants, the Milnor number of $f$ and the contact of the curve germ with its osculating circle.

Abstract:Bernstein-Schwarzman conjectured that the quotient of a complex affine space by an irreducible complex crystallographic group generated by reflections is a weighted projective space. The conjecture was proved by Schwarzman and Tokunaga-Yoshida in dimension 2 for almost all such groups, and for all crystallographic reflection groups of Coxeter type by Looijenga, Bernstein-Schwarzman and Kac-Peterson in any dimension. We prove that the conjecture is true for the crystallographic reflection group in dimension 3 for which the associated collineation group is Klein's simple group of order 168. In this case the quotient is the 3-dimensional weighted projective space with weights 1, 2, 4, 7. The main ingredient in the proof is the computation of the algebra of invariant theta functions. Unlike the Coxeter case, the invariant algebra is not free polynomial, and this was the major stumbling block.

Abstract:We study a family of birational maps of smooth affine quadric 3-folds, {over the complex numbers}, of the form $x_1x_4-x_2x_3=$ constant, which seems to have some (among many others) interesting/unexpected characters: a) they are cohomologically hyperbolic, b) their second dynamical degree is an algebraic number but not an algebraic integer, and c) the logarithmic growth of their periodic points is strictly smaller than their algebraic entropy. These maps are restrictions of a polynomial map on $\mathbb{C}^4$ preserving each of the quadrics. The study in this paper is a mixture of rigorous and experimental ones, where for the experimental study we rely on Bertini which is a reliable and fast software for expensive numerical calculations in complex algebraic geometry.

For an even weight function on the curve, we show that orthogonal polynomials can be expressed in terms of two families of orthogonal polynomials in one variable. Abstract:We define for every affine Coxeter graph a certain factor group of the associated Artin group and prove that some of these groups appear as orbifold fundamental groups of moduli spaces. Examples are the moduli space of nonsingular cubic algebraic surfaces and the universal nonhyperelliptic smooth genus three curve. We use this to obtain a simple presentation of the mapping class group of a compact genus three topological surface with connected boundary. This leads to a modification of Wajnryb's presentation of the mapping class groups in the higher genus case that can be understood in algebro-geometric terms.

Abstract:Given a smooth genus three curve $C$, the moduli space of rank two stable vector bundles on C with trivial determinant embeds in $\mathbb{P}^8$ as a hypersurface whose singular locus is the Kummer threefold of $C$; this hypersurface is the Coble quartic. Gruson, Sam and Weyman realized that this quartic could be constructed from a general skew-symmetric fourform in eight variables. Using the lines contained in the quartic, we prove that a similar construction allows to recover SU$_C(2, L)$, the moduli space of rank two stable vector bundles on C with fixed determinant of odd degree L, as a subvariety of $G(2, 8)$. In fact, each point $p \in C$ defines a natural embedding of SU$_C(2, \mathcal{O}(p))$ in $G(2, 8)$. We show that, for the generic such embedding, there exists a unique quadratic section of the Grassmannian which is singular exactly along the image of SU$_C(2, \mathcal{O}(p))$, and thus deserves to be coined the Coble quadric of the pointed curve $(C, p)$.
