Abstract:There are two main methods of nulcear fusion: inertial confinement fusion (ICF) and magnetic confinement fusion (MCF). Existing thermonuclear reactors are very complex, expensive, large, and heavy. They cannot achieve the Lawson creterion. The author offers an innovation. ICF has on the inside surface of the shell-shaped combustion chamber a covering of small Prism Reflectors (PR) and plasma reflector. These prism reflectors have a noteworthy advantage, in comparison with conventional mirror and especially with conventional shell: they multi-reflect the heat and laser radiation exactly back into collision with the fuel target capsule (pellet). The plasma reflector reflects the Bremsstrahlung radiation. The offered innovation decreases radiation losses, creates significant radiation pressure and increases the reaction time. The Lawson criterion increases by hundreds of times. The size, cost, and weight of a typical installation will decrease by tens of times. Applicability of composite materials for space radiation shielding of spacecraft

Abstract:Energetic ion beam experiments with major space radiation elements, 1H, 4He, 16O, 28Si and 56Fe, have been conducted to investigate the radiation shielding properties of composite materials. These materials are expected to be used for parts and fixtures of space vehicles due to both their mechanical strength and their space radiation shielding capabilities. Low Z materials containing hydrogen are effective for shielding protons and heavy ions due to their high stopping power and large fragmentation cross section per unit mass. The stopping power of the composite materials used in this work is intermediate between that of aluminum and polyethylene, which are typical structural and shielding materials used in space. The total charge-changing cross sections per unit mass, σUM, of the composite materials are 1.3-1.8 times larger than that of aluminum. By replacing conventional aluminum used for spacecraft with commercially available composite (carbon fiber / polyether ether ketone), it is expected that the shielding effect is increased by ∼17%. The utilization of composite materials will help mitigate the space radiation hazard on future deep space missions.
An advance in transfer line chilldown heat transfer of cryogenic propellants in microgravity using microfilm coating for enabling deep space exploration

Abstract:Abstract The extension of human space exploration from a low earth orbit to a high earth orbit, then to Moon, Mars, and possibly asteroids is NASA’s biggest challenge for the new millennium. Integral to this mission is the effective, sufficient, and reliable supply of cryogenic propellant fluids. Therefore, highly energy-efficient thermal-fluid management breakthrough concepts to conserve and minimize the cryogen consumption have become the focus of research and development, especially for the deep space mission to mars. Here we introduce such a concept and demonstrate its feasibility in parabolic flights under a simulated space microgravity condition. We show that by coating the inner surface of a cryogenic propellant transfer pipe with low-thermal conductivity microfilms, the quenching efficiency can be increased up to 176% over that of the traditional bare-surface pipe for the thermal management process of chilling down the transfer pipe. To put this into proper perspective, the much higher efficiency translates into a 65% savings in propellant consumption.

Thermonuclear Reflect AB-Reactor

Abstract:The author offers a new kind of thermonuclear reflect reactor. The remarkable feature of this new reactor is a three net AB reflector, which confines the high temperature plasma. The plasma loses part of its energy when it contacts with the net but this loss can be compensated by an additional permanent plasma heating. When the plasma is rarefied (has a small density), the heat flow to the AB reflector is not large and the temperature in the triple reflector net is lower than 2000 - 3000 K. This offered AB-reactor has significantly less power then the currently contemplated power reactors with magnetic or inertial confinement (hundreds-thousands of kW, not millions of kW). But it is enough for many vehicles and ships and particularly valuable for tunnelers, subs and space apparatus, where air to burn chemical fuel is at a premium or simply not available. The author has made a number of innovations in this reactor, researched its theory, developed methods of computation, made a sample computation of typical project. The main point of preference for the offered reactor is its likely cheapness as a power source. Abstract:In order to meet the requirement of the more extreme and severe aerothermodynamic environment faced by the future spacecrafts for high-speed Earth return missions, novel ablation resistant/heat insulation/lightweight integrated resin matrix composites are designed for the heatshields for these vehicles. Proposing the concept of security zone and heat insulation zone into the novel designs, not only the ablation resistant and heat insulation abilities can be improved, but also the weight of the entire material can be effectively reduced. Simultaneously, a computer modeling is established to evaluate the comprehensive performance of integrated high temperature materials. A variety of material process design parameters is introduced into the model while taking the respective properties of fiber weave and matrix into consideration. Computer codes are written for solving the model based on the numerical method for solving nonlinear equations. Under two typical extreme aerothermodynamic environments faced by future aircrafts, the effects of material process design parameters on the comprehensive performance are analyzed, which includes ablation resistant ability, heat insulation capacity, and lightweight level. Finally, the optimal design scheme of the new integrated resin matrix composite under the specific environment is determined. This work helps to the on-demand design of new thermal protection materials for extreme entry or reentry environments.

Fusion Reactor Design towards Radwaste Advanced Shield Material Minimum with

Abstract:A new concept of fusion reactor design is proposed to minimize the radioactive waste of the reactor. The main point of the concept is to clear massive structural cornponents located outside the neutron shield from regulatory control. The concept requires some reinforcernent of shielding with an advanced shield material such as a metal hydride, detriation, and tailoring of a detrimental element from the superconductor. Our assessment confirmed a large impact of the concept on radwaste reduction, in that it reduces the radwaste fraction of a fusion reactor A-SSTR2 from 92wt.% to 17wt.%.

Abstract:There is a strong motivation to develop high-power output nuclear fission reactors (around 1 MWe) for space applications, such as high-payload missions and long-duration missions beyond Mars, where the reduced solar flux makes using alternative energy sources challenging. Many published gas-cooled reactor designs for space applications deliver outputs in the 100 kWe regime, with typical power densities of around 4 MW/m3. Here we present a gas-cooled reactor design – referred to as JANUS – employing He–Xe coolant and operating on a direct Brayton cycle, that can achieve a high-power output (around 0.8 MWe) and higher power density (24 MW/m3) than previously published designs. The core employs a coated particle fuel form with uranium nitride kernels in a graphite matrix and with a high packing fraction (45%).Starting from the CEA's published OPUS space reactor design, a variety of approaches were considered for achieving high-power densities in a gas-cooled reactor, including changing the core aspect ratio. Our JANUS design uses a decreased coolant channel diameter and fuel element pitch, whilst increasing the number of fuel elements and employing radial enrichment zoning. The design achieves a significant increase in power density whilst obeying core-life limits of 2000 Effective Full Power Days and a peak fuel operating temperature of 1900 K. The core has been modelled neutronically with the ERANOS and SERPENT codes, with a simple yet robust thermal dimensioning tool developed by us to study peak fuel temperatures, to ensure the fuel operates within its design limitations and to aid optimisation.

Abstract:Nuclear thermal propulsion is a higher specific impulse option for in-space propulsion compared with chemical rockets, offering reduced transit times, higher payload, and reduced launch costs. Ultra Safe Nuclear (USNC) has designed a demonstration reactor and developed the manufacturing capabilities to produce the nuclear fuel in-house. The fuel consists of ceramic uranium fuel kernels coated with layers of low-density and high-density carbon along with zirconium carbide (ZrC). These particles are suspended in a printed ZrC matrix so that the particles are immediately adjacent to the hydrogen flow path. An additional ZrC chemical vapor deposition (CVD) coating is applied to act as an ablation layer and an additional protection for the fuel. All of these processes have been demonstrated. Preliminary testing was conducted on the printed ZrC matrix and ZrC CVD coatings in flowing hydrogen up to 2600 K.

Abstract:In this paper we discuss the advantages and challenges of utilizing Fission Fragment Rocket Engines (FFREs) to dramatically reduce transit time in space travel, for example, traveling to Mars. We discuss methods to decrease the size and weight of FFREs. These include utilizing metallic deuterides as moderators, driving the engines with electron beam bremsstrahlung, and operating the FFREs as subcritical assemblies, not as nuclear reactors. We discuss these and other new innovations based upon improved materials and technology that may be integrated into a revolutionary nuclear rocket technology.

Abstract:An air-cooled nuclear-powered engine is a good choice for low-attitude and high-speed aircraft soon. The conceptual design for the air-cooled reactor with the aim of minimum size and high thrust-weight ratio is conducted in this work. The nuclear engine is modeled with simplification to calculate the heat transfer and the pressure drop inside the flow channels. Geometrical dimensions of the air-cooled reactor core is minimized to offer the rated output thrust of 120 kN. The wall temperature of the reactor remains below the upper limit of 1644 K, and the core theoretically reaches criticality based on the critical buckling got from Monte-Carlo simulations of a fuel unit. Additionally, the neutronics analysis is employed for the entire reactor. This work finally proposes a design of the air-cooled reactor with a mass of 2.41 ton, which could provide the high-speed cruise aircraft with the thrust of 120 kN for 15 days.

Abstract:The ability to easily transport microreactors is a major selling point for deploying microreactors to remote areas. However, this creates a unique shielding challenge, especially when the microreactor is being shipped after irradiation. A traditional reactor configuration utilizes a separate biological shield and pressure vessel to meet radiological shielding and pressure needs. The limited space available for transportable microreactors for both shielding and pressure vessels requires a revised assessment of separating out the biological shield and pressure vessel. To address these concerns, we examine a nuclear-grade sandwich composite (NGSC) that combines the reactor pressure vessel and biological shielding functions into a single component. Through a series of optimization problems for both transportation and operational use cases, the NGSC is able to minimize dose, minimize the vessel cost, and ensure that weight requirements are met for transportation. Initial results show that using a tungsten-tetraboride cermet in the first two layers of a six-layer NGSC provides adequate shielding for both use cases. These results show promise that an NGSC has enough overlap between operational and transportation cases to help reduce the design space for future analysis and assessment.

Abstract:The grand challenge of "net-zero carbon" emission calls for technological breakthroughs in energy production. The traveling wave reactor (TWR) is designed to provide economical and safe nuclear power and solve imminent problems, including limited uranium resources and radiotoxicity burdens from back-end fuel reprocessing/disposal. However, qualification of fuels and materials for TWR remains challenging and it sets an "end of the road" mark on the route of R&D of this technology. In this article, a novel approach is proposed to maneuver reactor operations and utilize high-temperature transients to mitigate the challenges raised by envisioned TWR service environment. Annular U-50Zr fuel and oxidation dispersion strengthened (ODS) steels are proposed to be used instead of the current U-10Zr and HT-9 ferritic/martensitic steels. In addition, irradiation-accelerated transport of Mn and Cr to the cladding surface to form a protective oxide layer as a self-repairing mechanism was discovered and is believed capable of mitigating long-term corrosion. This work represents an attempt to disruptively overcome current technological limits in the TWR fuels. After the Fukushima accident in 2011, the entire nuclear industry calls for a major technological breakthrough that addresses the following three fundamental issues: (1) Reducing spent nuclear fuel reprocessing demands, (2) reducing the probability of a severe accident, and (3) reducing the energy production cost per kilowatt-hour. An inherently safe and ultralong life fast neutron reactor fuel form can be such one stone that kills the three birds. In light of the recent development findings on U-50Zr fuels, we hereby propose a disruptive, conceptual metallic fuel design that can serve the following purposes at the same time: (1) Reaching ultrahigh burnup of above 40% FIMA, (2) possessing strong inherent safety features, and (3) extending current limits on fast neutron irradiation dose to be far beyond 200 dpa. We believe that this technology will be able to bring about revolutionary changes to the nuclear industry by significantly lowering the operational costs as well as improving the reactor system safety to a large extent.

Abstract:Developing outstanding radiation-resistant materials with excellent thermal and mechanical properties and self-healing ability remains a great challenge for advanced nuclear energy systems. Here, we incorporate three-dimensional (3D) carbon nanotube (CNT) networks into iron nanocrystals (Fe NCs) to obtain functional bulk Fe-CNT nanocomposites, exhibiting much higher thermal conductivity and mechanical properties than the Fe NCs without sacrificing strength. Irradiations by energetic helium (He) and krypton ions show that 3D CNT networks act as gigantic-capacity "nano-dustbins" to collect and store He atoms and defects via a "loading-transporting-unloading" mechanism in the grain boundary-CNT (GB-CNT) configuration, thus greatly enhancing their radiation tolerance compared with the Fe NC counterparts. The energetic landscape of interactions of He/defects with the GBs and the Fe-CNT interfaces in the nanocomposites are revealed by first-principles calculations. This work offers a promising strategy for material design of high-performance structural materials for future advanced nuclear reactors.

Gas Core Reactors for Deep Space Propulsion

Abstract:The operation of a nuclear power station powering Deep Space transport is presented in the paper. The power station consists of a Gas Core Reactor (GCR) with magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) generator. A new model of gas core reactor which has advantages by comparison with known models is suggested. It is shown that $200\ ton$ system would generate $200\ MW$ electricity. The gas core reactor consists of a spherical cavity of $1\ m$ to $1.5\ m$ radius surrounded by a $50\ cm$ thick liquid beryllium reflector within molybdenum--92 container. The fuel consists of $^{235}$UF$_4$, KF, and K. It is demonstrated that such power station will work for gaseous fuel pressures of $50\ atm$ to $100\ atm$. The Monte-Carlo simulations describing paths of thousands of neutrons are performed. These simulations yield neutronic results, i.e. the fractions of neutrons causing fission, being absorbed by moderator, and escaping the reactor. From this information one can calculate minimum needed pressure inside the reactor, the reactor size, and moderator thickness. The conductivity of superheated fuel depending on temperature and pressure is also calculated. It is concluded that space propulsion is the best use of uranium resources.

Abstract:Proposed fusion and advanced (Generation IV) fission energy systems require high-performance materials capable of satisfactory operation up to neutron damage levels approaching 200 atomic displacements per atom with large amounts of transmutant hydrogen and helium isotopes. After a brief overview of fusion reactor concepts and radiation effects phenomena in structural and functional (nonstructural) materials, three fundamental options for designing radiation resistance are outlined: Utilize matrix phases with inherent radiation tolerance, select materials in which vacancies are immobile at the design operating temperatures, or engineer materials with high sink densities for point defect recombination. Environmental and safety considerations impose several additional restrictions on potential materials systems, but reduced-activation ferritic/martensitic steels (including thermomechanically treated and oxide dispersion–strengthened options) and silicon carbide ceramic composites emerge as robust structural materials options. Materials modeling (including computational thermodynamics) and advanced manufacturing methods are poised to exert a major impact in the next ten years.

Abstract:It is known for more than 2000 years that Damascus swords’ performances were not possible without the existence and usage of the “Damascus steel”, the first man made nano-hetero structural material that generalized is clearly showing that materials determine ultimate properties of the objects that made of. The actual world energy is manly based carbon emission materials, as coal, heavy oil, methane gas, with negative environment impact. Solar, wind and geothermal energy have also a negative impact on environment and have to be smartly used to minimize it. Nuclear energy, has lower CO2 emission, but because it is in its infancy it is complex, expensive and raises security and proliferation issues, has the potential for large scale accidents, and generates difficulties in dealing with waste fuel dispositioning.The novel developed families of engineered nano-materials, eliminate all the drawbacks of the actual nuclear power, rendering it among the most efficient and environmental friendly energy source. We learned from the global warming that the amount of energy man can produce on Earth is limited at 0.1% of sun delivered on Earth energy of 170 PW, which is of 200 TW, about 100 times more than today if it is chemical pollution free. Thermal pollution remains in place, therefore the upper clean power limit acceptable for the planet is at about 100 TW.The novel nuclear materials were developed in 6 families, each of them bringing in harmony a nuclear agent active inside that material as:- Micro-hetero structures, generally called “cer-Liq-Mesh”, that self-separates the fission products from the nuclear fuel and minimizes their fuel damage, allowing breed&burn to near perfect burning;- Nano-hetero structures generically called “CIci”, that form a super-capacitor, charged by nuclear energy and directly discharged as electricity;- Nano-clustered structure that enhances self-separation of transmutation products;- Fractal immiscible materials with radiation damage self-repairing capabilities eliminating the need for re-cladding in near perfect burning structures- Nano-structures with active NEMS used as fast control of nuclear reactivity by guiding neutrons in desired directions or ultralight shielding for mobile reactors.- Nano-structures that create active-quantum-nuclear-environment for long range nuclear reactions control by using quantum states entanglement and collective quantum states control.The use of these advanced materials in future nuclear energy related application will render a high efficiency, minimal nuclear waste, and optimal nuclear fuel cycle, delivering the needed planetary clean energy at will for the next 10,000 years.

Abstract:The two primary material requirements for a crewed habitat or spacecraft to operate beyond low earth orbit (LEO) include effective radiation shielding against the space radiation and secondary neutron environment and sufficient structural and thermal integrity. In this context it is mandatory to study the effect of long duration space environment on any proposed multifunctional radiation shielding material. In this paper we discuss two radiation shielding composite architectures and their long duration performance in LEO. Samples were flown on NASA's The Materials International Space Station Experiment (MISSE) platform and their structural, optical, and radiation shielding capabilities were characterized pre and post flight. Results showed composite architecture can be key in determining expected damage irrespective of sample placement orientation on the space station. A surface layer with a protective or sacrificial coating can be instrumental in minimizing property degradation even when exposed to orientations with high estimated sun hours and high fluence of atomic oxygen.
