Abstract:Annotated parallel text in Latin and English of the paper of Adam Adamandy Kochański "Solutio Theorematum Ab illustri Viro in Actis hujus Anni Mense Januario, pag. 28. propositorum", Acta Eruditorum, Lipsiae 1682, pp. 230-236, in which he presented solutions of two geometric problems proposed by an anonymous author in the same journal in January 1682. The Latin text of "Solutio theorematum" presented here closely follows the original text published in "Acta Eruditorum". Punctuation, capitalization, and mathematical notation have been preserved. Several misprints which appeared in the original are also reproduced unchanged, but with a footnote indicating correction. Every effort has been made to preserve the layout of original tables. The translation is as faithful as possible, often literal, and it is mainly intended to be of help to those who wish to study the original Latin text. In the appendix, all propositions from Euclid's "Elements" mentioned in the text are listed in both Latin and English.

Abstract:This is a report on the work of Robert Langlands, following his award of the Abel Prize in 2018. It includes his contributions to the general areas of Representation Theory, Automorphic Forms, Number Theory and Arithmetic Geometry. We have tried to communicate the remarkable continuity that runs throughout all of his work, with its roots in several fundamental areas of mathematics. What is now known as the Langlands Program represents a unification of some of the deepest parts of these areas. We hope that at least some parts of the report will be accessible to a broader mathematical audience. Other parts will inevitably be more difficult. However, we can also hope that the report is presented in such a way as to lead to a better understanding of all sides of Langlands' work.

Abstract:George Tate, draper, postmaster and insurance agent, was not only a renowned civic figure during the mid-nineteenth century in his home town of Alnwick but was also, despite limited schooling, a widely celebrated and influential writer on the geology, biology, archaeology and history of Northumberland and adjacent parts of Scotland. His principal geological interests were wide ranging but in the main were devoted to the stratigraphy and palaeontology of the lower part of the Carboniferous System in his local area. Some of the lithostratigraphical terminology he proposed remained in use into the 1950s and, despite changes in nomenclature, elements of his classification can still be recognised in the modern lithostratigraphy. He put forward much evidence for the intrusive origin of the Whin Sill when it was still regarded by many of his contemporaries as a lava flow. Tate was among the first to describe and discuss the evidence in Northumberland and southeast Scotland for the then novel idea that Britain had been subjected to the influence of ice in the recent geological past. His brother and two of his sons attended Edinburgh University and had distinguished professional careers. His nephew, Ralph, inherited much of his uncle's wide interests and became a highly celebrated figure in the development of geology in Australia.

On a Completion of Cohomological Functors Generalising Tate Cohomology I

Abstract:Viewing group cohomology as a so-called cohomological functor, G. Mislin has generalised Tate cohomology from finite groups to all discrete groups by defining a completion for cohomological functors in [27]. If $T^{\bullet}: \mathcal{C} \rightarrow \mathcal{D}$ is any cohomological functor, then we construct its Mislin completion $\widehat{T}^{\bullet}: \mathcal{C} \rightarrow \mathcal{D}$ under the assumption that the abelian category $\mathcal{C}$ has enough projectives and that in the abelian category $\mathcal{D}$ all countable direct limits exist and are exact. This takes Tate cohomology to settings where it has never been introduced such as in condensed mathematics. Through the latter, one can define Tate cohomology for any $T1$ topological group. More specifically, we generalise four constructions of Mislin completions from the literature, prove that they yield isomorphic cohomological functors and provide explicit formulae for their connecting homomorphisms. For any morphism $f: M \rightarrow N$ in $\mathcal{C}$ we develop formulae for $\widehat{T}^n(f): \widehat{T}^n(M) \rightarrow \widehat{T}^n(N)$ in terms of each construction.

Abstract:This article explores the relationship between manuscripts of ancient religious literature and aesthetic cognitivism, a normative theory of the value of art. Arguing that manuscripts both contain and constitute works of art, we explore paratextuality as a phenomenon that connects manuscript studies to both qualitative and quantitative sides of aesthetic cognitivism. Focusing on our work with a single unpublished gospel manuscript (Dublin, CBL W 139) in the context of a larger project called Paratextual Understanding, we make that case that paratexts have aesthetic functions that allow them to contribute to the knowledge yielded by the larger literary work of which they are a part. We suggest a number of avenues for further research that engages with material culture, non-typography, paratexts, and the arts.

Abstract:Abstract There are episodes in Marx’s life that go unnoticed or that are considered insignificant in Marxian scholarship. A case in point is that Marx wrote a treatise on Christian art between 1841 and 1842 and a group of excerpts (the Bonn Notebooks) on the history of religious art that resulted from it. The treatise and the accompanying notebooks are either completely absent from Marx biographies and studies on young Marx or they are mentioned only in passing; if the notebooks are considered at all, one portion is usually singled out while the rest is effectively ignored. The present piece traces Marx’s motives for occupying himself with religious art as well as his interests, shifting from Christian, Greek and Egyptian arts to fetishism and idolatry. This study intends to highlight that young Marx was more involved in questions concerning the political culture of aesthetics than we usually think. The Bonn Notebooks provide access to a more vivid image of Marx in this regard than previous scholarship has suggested.

Abstract:John Coates was born in the countryside of New South Wales, Australia, in 1945, and did his undergraduate studies at the Australian National University, Canberra. To celebrate his sixtieth birthday, the editorial board of the Pure and Applied Math Quarterly Journal has decided to publish two special issues in honor of him.John has contributed greatly to number theory, arithmetical algebraic geometry and Iwasawa theory. His 1977 fundamental paper with Andrew Wiles on the conjecture of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer was “a landmark contribution to number theory which introduced a panoply of new methods into the field of elliptic curves.” His “insights into the Iwasawa theory of the symmetric square of an elliptic curve were instrumental in the recent proof by Wiles of the Shimura-Taniyama conjecture for semistable elliptic curves over Q”. Abstract:These notes explore three amazing formulas proved by Abel in his 1826 Paris memoir on what we now call Abelian integrals. We discuss the first two formulas from the point of view of symbolic computation and explain their connection to residues and partial fractions. The third formula arises from the first two and is related to the genus and lattice points in the Newton polygon.

Abstract:In mid‐Victorian Britain the Royal Academy was subject to detailed investigation and valuation by a number of cultural, social and governmental forces. Focusing on the relationship between professional status and cultural power, many of these examinations were concerned with the role played by the Royal Academy in the public exhibition of art and the national education of artists. The purpose of this article is to survey and analyse the rhetorics which organized debates concerning the function and identity of the Royal Academy in the period between 1850 and 1880. Engaging with a range of primary sources – Select Committee Reports, exhibition reviews, critical essays and public speeches – this work addresses the following questions: How was the term ‘professional’ used in definitions of the Royal Academy? To what extent was its privileged position within the social, ceremonial and symbolic landscapes of Victorian culture dependent upon its exploitation of commercial markets? How could the Academy reject the claim that, in establishing the social status of its own membership, it had contrived to return art to the level of trade? Where was the Academy positioned in relation to the discourses of national culture which circulated within Victorian culture?

Abstract:Whilst Paul de Casteljau is now famous for his fundamental algorithm of curve and surface approximation, little is known about his other findings. This article offers an insight into his results in geometry, algebra and number theory. Related to geometry, his classical algorithm is reviewed as an index reduction of a polar form. This idea is used to show de Casteljau's algebraic way of smoothing, which long went unnoticed. We will also see an analytic polar form and its use in finding the intersection of two curves. The article summarises unpublished material on metric geometry. It includes theoretical advances, e.g., the 14-point strophoid or a way to link Apollonian circles with confocal conics, and also practical applications such as a recurrence for conjugate mirrors in geometric optics. A view on regular polygons leads to an approximation of their diagonals by golden matrices, a generalisation of the golden ratio. Relevant algebraic findings include matrix quaternions (and anti-quaternions) and their link with Lorentz' equations. De Casteljau generalised the Euclidean algorithm and developed an automated method for approximating the roots of a class of polynomial equations. His contributions to number theory not only include aspects on the sum of four squares as in quaternions, but also a view on a particular sum of three cubes. After a review of a complete quadrilateral in a heptagon and its angles, the paper concludes with a summary of de Casteljau's key achievements. The article contains a comprehensive bibliography of de Casteljau's works, including previously unpublished material.

Logical Methods in Computer Science

Abstract:Tennenbaum's theorem states that the only countable model of Peano arithmetic (PA) with computable arithmetical operations is the standard model of natural numbers. In this paper, we use constructive type theory as a framework to revisit, analyze and generalize this result. The chosen framework allows for a synthetic approach to computability theory, exploiting that, externally, all functions definable in constructive type theory can be shown computable. We then build on this viewpoint, and furthermore internalize it by assuming a version of Church's thesis, which expresses that any function on natural numbers is representable by a formula in PA. This assumption provides for a conveniently abstract setup to carry out rigorous computability arguments, even in the theorem's mechanization. Concretely, we constructivize several classical proofs and present one inherently constructive rendering of Tennenbaum's theorem, all following arguments from the literature. Concerning the classical proofs in particular, the constructive setting allows us to highlight differences in their assumptions and conclusions which are not visible classically. All versions are accompanied by a unified mechanization in the Coq proof assistant.
