Abstract:We study Frege proofs using depth-$d$ Boolean formulas for the Tseitin contradiction on $n \times n$ grids. We prove that if each line in the proof is of size $M$ then the number of lines is exponential in $n/(\log M)^{O(d)}$. This strengthens a recent result of Pitassi et al. [PRT22]. The key technical step is a multi-switching lemma extending the switching lemma of Håstad [Hås20] for a space of restrictions related to the Tseitin contradiction. The strengthened lemma also allows us to improve the lower bound for standard proof size of bounded depth Frege refutations from exponential in $\tilde \Omega (n^{1/59d})$ to exponential in $\tilde \Omega (n^{1/d})$. This strengthens the bounds given in the preliminary version of this paper [HR22].

Abstract:In this paper, we present a~generalisation of proof simulation procedures for Frege systems by Bonet and Buss to some logics for which the deduction theorem does not hold. In particular, we study the case of finite-valued Łukasiewicz logics. To this end, we provide proof systems that augment Avron's Frege system for Łukasiewicz three-valued logic with nested and general versions of the disjunction elimination rule, respectively. For these systems we provide upper bounds on speed-ups w.r.t.\ both the number of steps in proofs and the length of proofs. We also consider Tamminga's natural deduction and Avron's hypersequent calculus for 3-valued Łukasiewicz logic and generalise our results considering the disjunction elimination rule to all finite-valued Łukasiewicz logics.

The first part is the original paper of the second and third authors <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1202.5442v2" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1202.5442v2">arXiv:1202.5442v2</a>. The second part is an erratum/addendum written in english and concatenated at the end of the former paper. In the erratum/addentum, we amend Theorems 1.3 and 1.11 of <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1202.5442v2" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1202.5442v2">arXiv:1202.5442v2</a>: Finitude géométrique en géométrie de Hilbert. We seize the opportunity to show that in round Hilbert geometry, geometrical finiteness (gf) is equivalent to cusp-uniform action and to fill some small gaps that appear in two other proofs of <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1202.5442v2" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1202.5442v2">arXiv:1202.5442v2</a>.

Abstract:In 1874 Brill and Noether designed a seminal geometric method for computing bases of Riemann-Roch spaces. From then, their method has led to several algorithms, some of them being implemented in computer algebra systems. The usual proofs often rely on abstract concepts of algebraic geometry and commutative algebra. In this paper we present a short self-contained and elementary proof that mostly needs Newton polygons, Hensel lifting, bivariate resultants, and Chinese remaindering.

Abstract:We study Frege proofs for the one-to-one graph Pigeon Hole Principle defined on the $n\times n$ grid where $n$ is odd. We are interested in the case where each formula in the proof is a depth $d$ formula in the basis given by $\land$, $\lor$, and $\neg$. We prove that in this situation the proof needs to be of size exponential in $n^{\Omega (1/d)}$. If we restrict the size of each line in the proof to be of size $M$ then the number of lines needed is exponential in $n/(\log M)^{O(d)}$. The main technical component of the proofs is to design a new family of random restrictions and to prove the appropriate switching lemmas.

Abstract:Proof formats for SAT solvers have diversified over the last decade, enabling new features such as extended resolution-like capabilities, very general extension-free rules, inclusion of proof hints, and pseudo-boolean reasoning. Interference-based methods have been proven effective, and some theoretical work has been undertaken to better explain their limits and semantics. In this work, we combine the subsumption redundancy notion from (Buss, Thapen 2019) and the overwrite logic framework from (Rebola-Pardo, Suda 2018). Natural generalizations then become apparent, enabling even shorter proofs of the pigeonhole principle (compared to those from (Heule, Kiesl, Biere 2017)) and smaller unsatisfiable core generation.

Abstract:We provide elementary proofs of Lemmas 7.1 and 7.4 appearing in "The Cartan-Hadamard conjecture and the Little Prince", by B. Kloeckner and G. Kuperberg. The Lemmas play an important role in the derivation of novel isoperimetric inequalities. The original proofs relied on Sage, a symbolic algebra package, to factor certain algebraic varieties into irreducible components.

Abstract:This work contains two papers: the first published in 2022 and entitled "On the nature of some Euler's double equations equivalent to Fermat's last theorem" provides a marvellous proof through the so-called discordant forms of appropriate Euler's double equations, which could have entered in a not very narrow margin and the second instead published in 2024 and entitled "Some Diophantus-Fermat double equations equivalent to Frey's elliptic curve" provides the possible proof, which Fermat has not published in detail, but which uses the characteristic of all right-angled triangles with sides equal to whole numbers, or the famous Pythagorean identity. Some explanations in session(III) are provided: the first makes evident the nature of the "proof a' la Fermat" and the subsequent sessions clarify the direct and interesting connection of the two elementary proofs and it is necessary if you want to understand how two different elementary proofs of Fermat's Last Theorem are possible. It must be observed that those proofs must in no way be interpreted as a sort of absurd revenge of elementary number theory over more modern analytic and algebraic treatments.The author himself has added a section in which he connects his concepts with some of those used by Wiles in his complex demonstration.This implies that, to a certain extent, Wiles' demonstration inspired the author of those works. Ultimately in this paper we will illustrate how only thanks to some of Euler's discoveries was it possible to shed light on the so-called too narrow margin never written by Fermat. For this reason we will also provide some details on an article that was the real inspiration for achieving these results (see Last Conclusions).

Abstract:Gödel's ontological proof has been analysed for the first-time with an unprecedent degree of detail and formality with the help of higher-order theorem provers. The following has been done (and in this order): A detailed natural deduction proof. A formalization of the axioms, definitions and theorems in the TPTP THF syntax. Automatic verification of the consistency of the axioms and definitions with Nitpick. Automatic demonstration of the theorems with the provers LEO-II and Satallax. A step-by-step formalization using the Coq proof assistant. A formalization using the Isabelle proof assistant, where the theorems (and some additional lemmata) have been automated with Sledgehammer and Metis.
