Abstract:We show that the Tate conjecture for divisors over a finite field $\mathbb F$ is equivalent to an explicit algebraic problem about the third Milnor K-group of the function field $\bar {\mathbb F}(x,y,z)$ in three variables over $\bar {\mathbb F}$.

Abstract:We show that the Gersten complex for the (improved) Milnor K-sheaf on a smooth scheme over an excellent discrete valuation ring is exact except at the first place and that exactness at the first place may be checked at the discrete valuation ring associated to the the generic point of the special fiber. This complements results of Gillet and Levine for K-theory, Geisser for motivic cohomology and Schmidt and Strunk and the author for étale cohomology.

Abstract:For an abelian variety $A$ over a finitely generated field $K$ of characteristic $p > 0$, we prove that the algebraic rank of $A$ is at most a suitably defined analytic rank. Moreover, we prove that equality, i.e., the BSD rank conjecture, holds for $A/K$ if and only if a suitably defined Tate--Shafarevich group of $A/K$ (1) has finite $\ell$-primary component for some/all $\ell \neq p$, or (2) finite prime-to-$p$ part, or (3) has $p$-primary part of finite exponent, or (4) is of finite exponent. There is an algorithm to verify those conditions for concretely given $A/K$.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a field and $V$ be a set of rank one valuations of $K$. The corresponding Tate-Shafarevich group of a $K$-torus $T$ is $Sha(T , V) = \ker\left(H^1(K , T) \to \prod_{v \in V} H^1(K_v , T)\right)$. We prove that if $K = k(X)$ is the function field of a smooth geometrically integral quasi-projective variety over a field $k$ of characteristic 0 and $V$ is the set of discrete valuations of $K$ associated with prime divisors on $X$, then for any torus $T$ defined over the base field $k$, the group $Sha(T , V)$ is finite in the following situations: (1) $k$ is finitely generated and $X(k) \neq \emptyset$; (2) $k$ is a number field.

On p-torsions of geometric Brauer groups

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth projective integral variety over a finitely generated field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$. We show that the finiteness of the exponent of the $p$-primary part of $\mathrm{Br}(X_{k^s})^{G_k}$ is equivalent to the Tate conjecture for divisors, generalizing D'Addezio's theorem for abelian varieties to arbitrary smooth projective varieties. In combination with the Leray spectral sequence for rigid cohomology derived from the Berthelot conjecture recently proved by Ertl-Vezzani, we show that the cokernel of $\mathrm{Br}_{\mathrm{nr}}(K(X)) \rightarrow \mathrm{Br}(X_{k^s})^{G_k}$ is of finite exponent. This completes the $p$-primary part of the generalization of Artin-Grothendieck's theorem on relations between Brauer groups and Tate-Shafarevich groups to higher relative dimensions.

Abstract:We prove, under suitable assumptions, that $p$-torsion Tate-Shafarevich classes for elliptic curves over the rationals are visible in quotients of Jacobians of modular curves, as predicted by a conjecture of Jetchev-Stein. The key ingredient is the non-triviality of the Bertolini-Darmon bipartite Kolyvagin system, which implies that suitable cohomology classes of the system form a basis of the Selmer group modulo $p$.

Abstract:We prove some new instances of a conjecture of Bachoc, Couvreur and Zémor that generalizes Freiman's $3k-4$ Theorem to a multiplicative version in a function field setting. As a consequence we find that if $F$ is a rational function field over an algebraically closed field $K$ and $S \subset F$ a finite dimensional $K$-vector space such that $\dim S^2 = 2\dim S + 1$, then the conjecture holds.

Abstract:In the 80's Kudla and Millson introduced a theta function in two variables. It behaves as a Siegel modular form with respect to the first variable, and is a closed differential form on an orthogonal Shimura variety with respect to the other variable. We prove that the Lefschetz decomposition of the cohomology class of that theta function is also its modular decomposition in Eisenstein, Klingen and cuspidal parts. We also show that the image of the Kudla-Millson lift is contained in the primitive cohomology of X. As an application, we deduce dimension formulas for the cohomology of X in low degree. Our results cover the cases of moduli spaces of compact hyperkähler manifolds.

Abstract:We prove, assuming resolution of singularities in positive characteristic, an analogue of Siegel's theorem on sum of squares in positive characteristic. The method of proof combines techniques from central simple algebras with model theory and builds on work of Anscombe, Dittmann and Fehm. As an application, we show that, for each finite field $\mathbb{F}$ of odd characteristic and any positive integer $n$ coprime with the characteristic of $\mathbb{F}$, the first-order theory of the field given by the compositum of the fields generated by adjoining the $n$--th roots of all monic irreducible polynomials in $\mathbb{F}[t]$, of degree divisible by $n$ is undecidable in the language of rings with the variable $t$ as a constant.

Abstract:Let $F$ be a real quadratic number field with discriminant $D$ and $\mathcal{O}_F$ the ring of integers in $F$. Let $\chi_F$ be the Dirichlet character associated to $F/\mathbb{Q}$. Write $L(\chi_F,s)$ for the Dirichlet L-function of $\chi_F$. By an induction argument for imprimitive Dirichlet L-values, we get several $2$-divisibility results on $L(\chi_F,-1)$ when $D$ has arbitrarily finitely many prime divisors. As an application, by making use of the Birch-Tate formula for $F$, we determine the $2$-primary part for the second $K$ group $K_2\mathcal{O}_F$. We also give a new proof for an old theorem of Browkin and Schinzel.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the ramification of extensions of a function field generated by division points of rank 2 Drinfeld modules. Also conductors of certain rank 2 Drinfeld modules are defined as analogues of those for elliptic curves. A calculation of these conductors allows us to show an analogue of Szpiro's conjecture under a certain limited situation.

Abstract:The goal of this article is to complete the unfinished construction (due to Glenn Stevens in an old preprint) of a certain Milnor $K$-group valued group cocycle for $GL_n(\mathbb{Q})$ where $n$ is a positive integer, which we call the Stevens cocycle. Moreover, we give a precise relationship between the Stevens cocycle and the Shintani cocycle, which encodes key informations on the zeta values of totally real fields of degree $n$, using the $\operatorname{dlog}$ map of $K$-theory and the Fourier transform of locally constant functions on $\mathbb{Q}^n$ with bounded support. Roughly speaking, the Stevens cocycle is a multiplicative version of the Shintani cocyle.

On The Equivariant Tamagawa Number Conjecture

Abstract:Let $F$ be a totally real field and $K$ a finite abelian CM extension of $F$. Using class field theory, we show that our previous result giving a strong form of the Brumer-Stark conjecture implies the minus part of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture for the Tate motive associated to $K/F$. We work integrally over $\mathbf{Z}$, in particular the prime 2 is not inverted. This note can be viewed as our perspective on the recent work of Bullach, Burns, Daoud, and Seo. Following their philosophy, we show that the functorial properties (i.e. norm compatibilities) connecting the strong Brumer-Stark conjecture for varying number fields actually implies the minus part of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture.

Abstract:. Let K/k be a finite abelian extension of function fields with Galois group G . Using the Stickelberger elements associated to K/k studied by J. Tate, P. Deligne and D. Hayes, we construct an ideal I in the integral group ring ℤ[G] relative to the extension K/k , whose elements annihilate the group of divisor classes of degree zero of K and whose rank is equal to the degree of the extension. When K/k is a (wide or narrow) ray class extension, we compute the index of I in ℤ[G] , which is equal to the divisor class number of K up to a trivial factor.
On the observability of Galois representations and the Tate conjecture

Abstract:The Tate conjecture has two parts: i) Tate classes are linear combination of algebraic classes, ii) semisimplicity of Galois representations (for smooth projective varieties). B. Moonen proved that i) implies ii) in characteristic 0, using $p$-adic Hodge theory. We show that an unconditional result lies behind this implication: the {\it observability} of arithmetic monodromy groups of geometric origin (in any characteristic) - which leads to a sharpening of Moonen's result. We also discuss another aspect of the Tate conjecture related to the transcendence of $p$-adic periods.

Constants for Artin like problems in Kummer and division fields

Abstract:We apply the character sums method of Lenstra, Moree, and Stevenhagen, to explicitly compute the constants in the Titchmarsh divisor problem for Kummer fields and for division fields of Serre curves. We derive our results as special cases of a general result on the product expressions for the sums in the form $$\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}\frac{g(n)}{\#G(n)}$$ in which $g(n)$ is a multiplicative arithmetic function and $\{G(n)\}$ is a certain family of Galois groups. Our results extend the application of the character sums method to the evaluation of constants, such as the Titchmarsh divisor constants, that are not density constants.

Abstract:Freiman's $3k-4$ Theorem states that if a subset $A$ of $k$ integers has a Minkowski sum $A+A$ of size at most $3k-4$, then it must be contained in a short arithmetic progression. We prove a function field analogue that is also a generalisation: it states that if $K$ is a perfect field and if $S\supset K$ is a vector space of dimension $k$ inside an extension $F/K$ in which~$K$ is algebraically closed, and if the $K$-vector space generated by all products of pairs of elements of $S$ has dimension at most $3k-4$, then $K(S)$ is a function field of small genus, and $S$ is of small codimension inside a Riemann-Roch space of $K(S)$.

Abstract:Assuming specific instances of two general conjectures in arithmetic algebraic geometry (bijectivity of $p$-adic regulator maps, injectivity of $p$-adic Abel-Jacobi maps), we prove several cases of the $p$-part of the Tamagawa number conjecture ($p$-TNC) of Bloch-Kato and Fontaine-Perrin-Riou for (homological) motives of modular forms of even weight $\geq4$ in analytic rank $1$. More precisely, we prove our results for a large class of newforms $f$ and prime numbers $p$ that are ordinary for $f$ and such that the weight of $f$ is congruent to $2$ modulo $2(p-1)$. Inspired by work of W. Zhang in weight $2$, the key ingredient in our strategy is an analogue for $p$-adic Galois representations attached to higher (even) weight newforms of Kolyvagin's conjecture on the $p$-indivisibility of derived Heegner points on elliptic curves, which we prove via a $p$-adic variation method exploiting the arithmetic of Hida families. Along the way, we also prove (under similar assumptions) the $p$-TNC for modular motives in analytic rank $0$ and the rationality conjecture of Beilinson and Deligne on the existence of zeta elements on the fundamental line in analytic ranks $0$ and $1$. Prior to this work, the only known results on (questions related to) the $p$-TNC for modular motives were in weight $2$ and analytic rank $\leq1$ and in even weight and analytic rank $0$. As further applications of our result on Kolyvagin's conjecture in higher weight, we deduce a structure theorem for Selmer groups, $p$-parity results, converse theorems and higher rank results for modular forms and modular motives.
