Abstract:In this paper we describe a proof of the formulas of Witten [W1], [W2] about the symplectic volumes and the intersection numbers of the moduli spaces of principal bundles on a compact Riemann surface. It is known that these formulas give all the information needed for the Verlinde formula. The main idea of the proof is to use the heat kernel on compact Lie groups, in a way very similar to the heat kernel proof of the Atiyah-Singer index formula and the Atiyah-Bott fixed point formula. The Reidemeister torsion comes into the picture, through a beautiful observation of Witten, as the symplectic volume of the moduli space. It plays the role similar to that played by the Ray-Singer torsion in the path-integral computations on the space of connections. The basic idea is as follows. Consider a smooth map between two compact smooth manifolds f : M → N . Let H(t, x, x0) be the heat kernel of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on N with x0 a fixed regular value of f . Abstract:We study the law of a hypoelliptic Brownian motion on an infinite-dimensional Heisenberg group based on an abstract Wiener space. We show that the endpoint distribution, which can be seen as a heat kernel measure, is absolutely continuous with respect to a certain product of Gaussian and Lebesgue measures, that the heat kernel is quasi-invariant under translation by the Cameron–Martin subgroup, and that the Radon–Nikodym derivative is Malliavin smooth.

Abstract:This paper presents an alternative method to prove the heat kernel asymptotics for the Kodaira Laplacian with respect to the high power of a holomorphic Hermitian line bundle $(L,h^L)$ over a possibly non-compact Hermitian manifold $(M,\omega)$. The approach used in this work employs a scaling technique and is applicable to $M$ regardless of its compactness.

Abstract:Given an elliptic operator $L= - \mathrm{div} (A \nabla \cdot)$ subject to mixed boundary conditions on an open subset of $\mathbb{R}^d$, we study the relation between Gaussian pointwise estimates for the kernel of the associated heat semigroup, Hölder continuity of $L$-harmonic functions and the growth of the Dirichlet energy. To this end, we generalize an equivalence theorem of Auscher and Tchamitchian to the case of mixed boundary conditions and to open sets far beyond Lipschitz domains. Yet we prove consistency of our abstract result by encompassing operators with real-valued coefficients and their small complex perturbations into one of the aforementioned equivalent properties. The resulting kernel bounds open the door for developing a harmonic analysis for the associated semigroups on rough open sets.

Abstract:In this thesis we describe a type of metric space called an Euclidean polyhedral complex. We define a Dirichlet form on it; this is used to give a corresponding heat kernel. We provide a uniform small time Poincare inequality for complexes with bounded geometry and use this to determine uniform small time heat kernel bounds via a theorem of Sturm. We then consider such complexes with an underlying finitely generated group structure. We use techniques of Saloff-Coste and Pittet to show a large time asymptotic equivalence for the heat kernel on the complex and the heat kernel on the group.

Abstract:In this talk, we review the heat kernel approach to the Atiyah-Singer index theorem for Dirac operators on closed manifolds, as well as the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theorem for Dirac operators on manifolds with boundary. We also discuss the odd dimensional counterparts of the above results. In particular, we describe a joint result with Xianzhe Dai on an index theorem for Toeplitz operators on odd dimensional manifolds with boundary.

Abstract:Abstract The aim of this paper is threefold. First, we obtain the precise bounds for the heat kernel on isotropic Heisenberg groups by using well-known results in the three-dimensional case. Second, we study the asymptotic estimates at infinity for the heat kernel on nonisotropic Heisenberg groups. As a consequence, we give uniform upper and lower estimates of the heat kernel, and complete its short-time behavior obtained by Beals–Gaveau–Greiner. Third, we prove that the uniform asymptotic behaviour at infinity (so the small-time asymptotic behaviour) of the heat kernel for Grushin operators, obtained by the first author, are still valid in two and three dimensions.

Abstract:We study integral kernels of strongly continuous semigroups on Lebesgue spaces over metric measure spaces. Based on semigroup smoothing properties and abstract Morrey-type inequalities, we give sufficient conditions for Hölder or Lipschitz continuity of the kernels. We apply our results to (pseudo)differential operators on domains and quantum graphs, to Laplacians on a class of fractals including the Sierpiński gasket, and to structurally damped wave equations. An extension to non-autonomous problems is also discussed.

Abstract:We consider the asymptotics of the discrete heat kernel on isoradial graphs for the case where the time and the edge lengths tend to zero simultaneously. Depending on the asymptotic ratio between time and edge lengths, we show that two different regimes arise: (i) a Gaussian regime and (ii) a Poissonian regime, which resemble the short-time asymptotics of the heat kernel on (i) Euclidean spaces and (ii) graphs, respectively.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the large time behavior of the heat kernel on complete Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature, which was studied by P. Li with additional maximum volume growth assumption. Following Y. Ding's original strategy, by blowing down the metric, using Cheeger and Colding's theory about limit spaces of Gromov-Hausdorff convergence, combining with the Gaussian upper bound of heat kernel on limit spaces, we succeed in reducing the limit behavior of the heat kernel on manifold to the values of heat kernels on tangent cones at infinity of manifold with renormalized measure. As one application, we get the consistent large time limit of heat kernel in more general context, which generalizes the former result of P. Li. Furthermore, by choosing different sequences to blow down the suitable metric, we show the first example manifold whose heat kernel has inconsistent limit behavior, which answers an open question posed by P. Li negatively.

Abstract:We give equivalent characterizations for off-diagonal upper bounds of the heat kernel of a regular Dirichlet form on the metric measure space, in two settings: for the upper bounds with the polynomial tail (typical for jump processes) and for the upper bounds with the exponential tail (for diffusions). Our proofs are purely analytic and do not use the associated Hunt process.

Abstract:The short-time heat kernel expansion of elliptic operators provides a link between local and global features of classical geometries. For many geometric structures related to (non-)involutive distributions, the natural differential operators tend to be Rockland, hence hypoelliptic. In this paper, we establish a universal heat kernel expansion for formally self-adjoint non-negative Rockland differential operators on general closed filtered manifolds. The main ingredient is the analysis of parametrices in a recently constructed calculus adapted to these geometric structures. The heat expansion implies that the new calculus, a more general version of the Heisenberg calculus, also has a non-commutative residue. Many of the well-known implications of the heat expansion such as, the structure of the complex powers, the heat trace asymptotics, the continuation of the zeta function, as well as Weyl's law for the eigenvalue asymptotics, can be adapted to this calculus. Other consequences include a McKean-Singer type formula for the index of Rockland differential operators. We illustrate some of these results by providing a more explicit description of Weyl's law for Rumin-Seshadri operators associated with curved BGG sequences over 5-manifolds equipped with a rank-two distribution of Cartan type.

Abstract:In this paper we present new heat kernel upper bounds for a certain class of non-local regular Dirichlet forms on metric measure spaces, including fractal spaces. We use a new purely analytic method where one of the main tools is the parabolic maximum principle. We deduce an off-diagonal upper bound of the heat kernel from the on-diagonal one under the volume regularity hypothesis, restriction of the jump kernel and the survival hypothesis. As an application, we obtain two-sided estimates of heat kernels for non-local regular Dirichlet forms with finite effective resistance, including settings with the walk dimension greater than 2.

Abstract:In this paper we analyze the heat kernel of the equation $\partial_tv =\pm\mathcal{L} v$, where $\mathcal{L}=\partial_x^N+u_{N-2}(x)\partial_x^{N-2}+\cdots+u_0(x)$ is an $N$-th order differential operator and the $\pm$ sign on the right-hand side is chosen appropriately. Using formal pseudo-differential operators, we derive an explicit formula for Hadamard's coefficients in the expansion of the heat kernel in terms of the resolvent of $\mathcal{L}$. Combining this formula with soliton techniques and Sato's Grassmannian, we establish different properties of Hadamard's coefficients and relate them to the Gelfand-Dickey hierarchy. In particular, using the correspondence between commutative rings of differential operators and algebraic curves due to Burchnall-Chaundy and Krichever, we prove that the heat kernel consists of finitely many terms if and only if the operator $\mathcal{L}$ belongs to a rank-one commutative ring of differential operators whose spectral curve is rational with only one cusp-like singular point, and the coefficients $u_j(x)$ vanish at $x=\infty$. We also characterize these operators $\mathcal{L}$ as the rational solutions of the Gelfand-Dickey hierarchy with coefficients $u_j $ vanishing at $x=\infty$, or as the rank-one solutions of the bispectral problem vanishing at $\infty$.

Abstract:Let G be a connected, linear real reductive group and let X be a G-proper manifold without boundary. We give a detailed account of both the large and small time behaviour of the heat-kernel of perturbed Dirac operators, as a map from the positive real line to the Lafforgue algebra. As a first application, we prove that certain delocalized eta invariants associated to perturbed Dirac operators are well defined. We then prove index formulas relating these delocalized eta invariants to Atiyah-Patodi-Singer delocalized indices on G-proper manifolds with boundary. We apply these results to the definition of rho-numbers associated to G-homotopy equivalences between closed G-proper manifolds and to the study of their bordism properties.
