Abstract:In this paper we describe a proof of the formulas of Witten [W1], [W2] about the symplectic volumes and the intersection numbers of the moduli spaces of principal bundles on a compact Riemann surface. It is known that these formulas give all the information needed for the Verlinde formula. The main idea of the proof is to use the heat kernel on compact Lie groups, in a way very similar to the heat kernel proof of the Atiyah-Singer index formula and the Atiyah-Bott fixed point formula. The Reidemeister torsion comes into the picture, through a beautiful observation of Witten, as the symplectic volume of the moduli space. It plays the role similar to that played by the Ray-Singer torsion in the path-integral computations on the space of connections. The basic idea is as follows. Consider a smooth map between two compact smooth manifolds f : M → N . Let H(t, x, x0) be the heat kernel of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on N with x0 a fixed regular value of f . Because of the basic properties of the heat kernel, we know that for any continuous function a(y) on M , when t goes to zero, ∫

Abstract:We introduce and study a geometric heat flow to find Killing vector fields on closed Riemannian manifolds with positive sectional curvature. We study its various properties, prove the global existence of the solution to this flow, discuss its convergence and possible applications, and its relation to the Navier-Stokes equations on manifolds and Kazdan-Warner-Bourguignon-Ezin identity for conformal Killing vector fields. We also provide two new criterions on the existence of Killing vector fields. A similar flow to finding holomorphic vector fields on Kähler manifolds will be studied by Li and Liu (2014).

Abstract:The study of spectral properties of natural geometric elliptic partial differential operators acting on smooth sections of vector bundles over Riemannian manifolds is a central theme in global analysis, differential geometry and mathematical physics. Instead of studying the spectrum of a differential operator $L$ directly one usually studies its spectral functions, that is, spectral traces of some functions of the operator, such as the spectral zeta function $\zeta(s)=\Tr L^{-s}$ and the heat trace $\Theta(t)=\Tr\exp(-tL)$. The kernel $U(t;x,x')$ of the heat semigroup $\exp(-tL)$, called the heat kernel, plays a major role in quantum field theory and quantum gravity, index theorems, non-commutative geometry, integrable systems and financial mathematics. We review some recent progress in the study of spectral asymptotics. We study more general spectral functions, such as $\Tr f(tL)$, that we call quantum heat traces. Also, we define new invariants of differential operators that depend not only on the their eigenvalues but also on the eigenfunctions, and, therefore, contain much more information about the geometry of the manifold. Furthermore, we study some new invariants, such as $\Tr\exp(-tL_+)\exp(-sL_-)$, that contain relative spectral information of two differential operators. Finally we show how the convolution of the semigroups of two different operators can be computed by using purely algebraic methods.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{M}$ be a smooth, closed and connected manifold of dimension $n\in\mathbb{N}$, endowed with a Riemannian metric $g$. Moreover, let $\mathcal{B}$ be an $(n+1)$-dimensional compact manifold with boundary equal to $\mathcal{M}$. Endow $\mathcal{B}$ with a Riemannian metric $h$ such that, in local coordinates $(x,y)\in [0,1)\times \mathcal{M}$ on the collar part of the boundary, it admits the warped product form $h=dx^{2}+x^{2}g(y)$. We consider the homogeneous heat equation on $(\mathcal{B},h)$ and find an arbitrary long asymptotic expansion of the solutions with respect to $x$ near $0$. It turns out that the spectrum of the Laplacian on $(\mathcal{M},g)$ determines explicitly the above asymptotic expansion and vice versa.

Abstract:In this paper we provide the small-time heat kernel asymptotics at the cut locus in three relevant cases: generic low-dimensional Riemannian manifolds, generic 3D contact sub-Riemannian manifolds (close to the starting point) and generic 4D quasi-contact sub-Riemannian manifolds (close to a generic starting point). As a byproduct, we show that, for generic low-dimensional Riemannian manifolds, the only singularities of the exponential map, as a Lagragian map, that can arise along a minimizing geodesic are $A_3$ and $A_5$ (in the classification of Arnol'd's school). We show that in the non-generic case, a cornucopia of asymptotics can occur, even for Riemannian surfaces.

Abstract:Among those transversally elliptic operators initiated by Atiyah and Singer, Kohn's $\Box_b$ operator on CR manifolds with $S^1$ action is a natural one of geometric significance for complex analysts. Our first main result establishes an asymptotic expansion for the heat kernel of such an operator with values in its Fourier components, which involves an unprecedented contribution in terms of a distance function from lower dimensional strata of the $S^1$-action. Our second main result computes a local index density, in terms of \emph{tangential} characteristic forms, on such manifolds including \emph{Sasakian manifolds} of interest in String Theory, by showing that certain non-trivial contributions from strata in the heat kernel expansion will eventually cancel out by applying Getzler's rescaling technique to off-diagonal estimates. This leads to a local result which can be thought of as a type of local index theorem on these CR manifolds. As applications of our CR index theorem we can prove a CR version of Grauert-Riemenschneider criterion, and produce many CR functions on a weakly pseudoconvex CR manifold with transversal $S^1$ action and many CR sections on some class of CR manifolds, answering (on this class of manifolds) some long-standing questions in several complex variables and CR geometry. We give examples of these CR manifolds, some of which arise from Brieskorn manifolds. Moreover in some cases, without use of equivariant cohomology method nor keeping contributions arising from lower dimensional strata as done in previous works, we can reinterpret Kawasaki's Hirzebruch-Riemann-Roch formula for a complex orbifold with an orbifold holomorphic line bundle, as an index theorem obtained by a single integral over a smooth CR manifold which is essentially the circle bundle of this line bundle.

Abstract:In this talk, we review the heat kernel approach to the Atiyah-Singer index theorem for Dirac operators on closed manifolds, as well as the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theorem for Dirac operators on manifolds with boundary. We also discuss the odd dimensional counterparts of the above results. In particular, we describe a joint result with Xianzhe Dai on an index theorem for Toeplitz operators on odd dimensional manifolds with boundary.

Abstract:We examine under which conditions the canonical heat flow on glued manifolds is ergodic and irreducible. Glued manifolds are spaces consisting of manifolds of varying dimension connected by a weakly doubling measure. Moreover, we construct a non-local perimeter functional, the heat excess, to raise the question of its ${\Gamma}$-convergence to the standard perimeter functional. In this context, we connect our work to the previous work on the convergence of perimeter functionals, approximations, and existence of heat kernels, as well as short-time expansions of Brownian motion.

Abstract:Let M be a smooth closed (compact without boundary) Riemannian manifold of dimension n and P a q-dimensional smooth submanifold of M. U will denote the tubular neighborhood of P in M. Let E be a smooth vector bundle over M. Here we will obtain a vector bundle Generalized Feynman-Kac formula associated to U and the vector bundle differential operator L consisteing of half the generalized Laplacian, a vector field X on M and a potential term V on M. From this formula, we shall deduce the usual Feynman-Kac formula as well as a stochastic representation of the Generalized Elworthy-Truman Heat Kernel formula, and ultimately the heat kernel formula. The Feynman-Kac expression can be expanded and from this expansion we shall deduce both the generalized heat trace and heat content expansions. The Generalized Feynman-Kac Formula is thus at the center of several other previously known results.

Abstract:We compute the full asymptotic expansion of the heat kernel where D is, assuming RH, the self-adjoint operator whose spectrum is formed of the imaginary parts of non-trivial zeros of the Riemann zeta function. The coefficients of the expansion are explicit expressions involving Bernoulli and Euler numbers. We relate the divergent terms with the heat kernel expansion of the Dirac square root of the prolate wave operator investigated in our joint work with Henri Moscovici.

Abstract:The generator of time-translations on the solution space of the wave equation on stationary spacetimes specialises to the square root of the Laplacian on Riemannian manifolds when the spacetime is ultrastatic. Its spectral analysis therefore constitutes a generalization of classical spectral geometry. If the spacetime is spatially compact the spectrum is discrete and admits a wave-trace expansion at time zero. A Weyl law for the eigenvalues and a wave-trace formula was shown in a previous paper and related to the geometry of the space of null-geodesics. In this paper we investigate the relation to heat kernel coefficients and residues of zeta functions in this context and compute the second non-zero term in the wave-trace expansion. This second coefficient is an analogue in the category of stationary spacetimes of the second heat kernel coefficient of the Laplace operator. The general formula is quite involved but reduces to the usual term involving the scalar curvature when specialised to ultra-static spacetimes.

Abstract:We establish a Gaussian upper bound of the heat kernel for the Laplace-Beltrami operator on complete Riemannian manifolds with Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature bounded below. As applications, we first prove an L^1-Liouville property for non-negative subharmonic functions when the potential function of the Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature tensor is of at most quadratic growth. Then we derive lower bounds of the eigenvalues of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on closed manifolds. An upper bound of the bottom spectrum is also obtained.

Abstract:Let M be a complete non-compact Riemannian manifold whose sectional curvature is bounded between two constants -k and K. Then one expects that the heat diffusion in such a manifold behaves like the heat diffusion in Euclidean space. The purpose of this paper is to give a justification of such a statement. In [5], J. Cheeger and the third author found a lower estimate of the heat kernel by comparing it with the heat kernel of the space form whose curvature is the lower bound of the curvature of the manifold. This lower estimate is sharp if we insist the dependence should be on the lower bound of the Ricci curvature alone. It remains to give an upper estimate of the heat kernel. One does not, however, expect to have a comparison theorem for the upper bound because it is more sensitive to the geometry of the manifold. In fact, the heat kernel of the upper hialf space and the heat kernel of the complete hyperbolic manifold with finite volume have quite different behavior. This is reflected by the fact that the Laplacian has no discrete spectrum in the first case while infinite number of discrete eigenvalues may exist in the latter case. What we will prove here is that in any case, the heat kernel has to decay in a manner similar to the Euclidean heat kernel. Thus we will prove that for any constant C > 4, there exists C1 depending on C, T, the bound of the curvature of M and x so that for all t E [0, T]
Constructing heat kernels on infinite graphs

Abstract:Let $G$ be an infinite, edge- and vertex-weighted graph with certain reasonable restrictions. We construct the heat kernel of the associated Laplacian using an adaptation of the parametrix approach due to Minakshisundaram-Pleijel in the setting of Riemannian geometry. This is partly motivated by the wish to relate the heat kernels of a graph and a subgraph, or of a domain and a discretization of it. As an application, assuming that the graph is locally finite, we express the heat kernel $H_G(x,y;t)$ as a Taylor series with the lead term being $a(x,y)t^r$, where $r$ is the combinatorial distance between $x$ and $y$ and $a(x,y)$ depends (explicitly) upon edge and vertex weights. In the case $G$ is the regular $(q+1)$-tree with $q\geq 1$, our construction reproves different explicit formulas due to Chung-Yau and to Chinta-Jorgenson-Karlsson. Assuming uniform boundedness of the combinatorial vertex degree, we show that a dilated Gaussian depending on any distance metric on $G$, which is uniformly bounded from below can be taken as a parametrix in our construction. Our work extends in part the recent articles [LNY21, CJKS23] in that the graphs are infinite and weighted.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the large time behavior of the heat kernel on complete Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature, which was studied by P. Li with additional maximum volume growth assumption. Following Y. Ding's original strategy, by blowing down the metric, using Cheeger and Colding's theory about limit spaces of Gromov-Hausdorff convergence, combining with the Gaussian upper bound of heat kernel on limit spaces, we succeed in reducing the limit behavior of the heat kernel on manifold to the values of heat kernels on tangent cones at infinity of manifold with renormalized measure. As one application, we get the consistent large time limit of heat kernel in more general context, which generalizes the former result of P. Li. Furthermore, by choosing different sequences to blow down the suitable metric, we show the first example manifold whose heat kernel has inconsistent limit behavior, which answers an open question posed by P. Li negatively.

Abstract:In this paper we analyze the heat kernel of the equation $\partial_tv =\pm\mathcal{L} v$, where $\mathcal{L}=\partial_x^N+u_{N-2}(x)\partial_x^{N-2}+\cdots+u_0(x)$ is an $N$-th order differential operator and the $\pm$ sign on the right-hand side is chosen appropriately. Using formal pseudo-differential operators, we derive an explicit formula for Hadamard's coefficients in the expansion of the heat kernel in terms of the resolvent of $\mathcal{L}$. Combining this formula with soliton techniques and Sato's Grassmannian, we establish different properties of Hadamard's coefficients and relate them to the Gelfand-Dickey hierarchy. In particular, using the correspondence between commutative rings of differential operators and algebraic curves due to Burchnall-Chaundy and Krichever, we prove that the heat kernel consists of finitely many terms if and only if the operator $\mathcal{L}$ belongs to a rank-one commutative ring of differential operators whose spectral curve is rational with only one cusp-like singular point, and the coefficients $u_j(x)$ vanish at $x=\infty$. We also characterize these operators $\mathcal{L}$ as the rational solutions of the Gelfand-Dickey hierarchy with coefficients $u_j $ vanishing at $x=\infty$, or as the rank-one solutions of the bispectral problem vanishing at $\infty$.
