Abstract:In this note we apply heat kernels to derive some localization formula in sympletcic geometry, to study moduli spaces of flat connections on a Riemann surface, to obtain the push-forward measures for certain maps between Lie groups and to solve equations in finite groups.

Abstract:In this paper we describe a proof of the formulas of Witten [W1], [W2] about the symplectic volumes and the intersection numbers of the moduli spaces of principal bundles on a compact Riemann surface. It is known that these formulas give all the information needed for the Verlinde formula. The main idea of the proof is to use the heat kernel on compact Lie groups, in a way very similar to the heat kernel proof of the Atiyah-Singer index formula and the Atiyah-Bott fixed point formula. The Reidemeister torsion comes into the picture, through a beautiful observation of Witten, as the symplectic volume of the moduli space. It plays the role similar to that played by the Ray-Singer torsion in the path-integral computations on the space of connections. The basic idea is as follows. Consider a smooth map between two compact smooth manifolds f : M → N . Let H(t, x, x0) be the heat kernel of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on N with x0 a fixed regular value of f . Abstract:In this paper we briefly discuss some of our recent results in the study of moduli space of Riemann surfaces. It is naturally divided into two parts, one about the differential geometric aspect, another on the topological aspect of the moduli spaces. To understand the geometry of the moduli spaces we introduced new metrics, studied in detail all of the known classical complete metrics, especially the Kähler-Einstein metric. As a corollary we proved that the logarithmic cotangent bundle of the moduli space is strictly stable in the sense of Mumford. The topological results we obtained were motivated by conjectures from string theory. We will describe in this part our proofs by localization method of the Mariño-Vafa formula, its two partition analogue as well as the theory of topological vertex and the simple localization proofs of the ELSV formula and the Witten conjecture. The applications of these formulas in Gromov-Witten theory and string duality will also be mentioned.

Abstract:This paper studies Brownian motion and heat kernel measure on a class of infinite dimensional Lie groups. We prove a Cameron–Martin type quasi-invariance theorem for the heat kernel measure and give estimates on the Lp norms of the Radon–Nikodym derivatives. We also prove that a logarithmic Sobolev inequality holds in this setting.

Abstract:The paper is devoted to a local heat kernel, which is a special part of the standard heat kernel. Locality means that all considerations are produced in an open convex set of a smooth Riemannian manifold. We study such properties and concepts as uniqueness, a symmetry of the Seeley-DeWitt coefficients, extension on the whole manifold, a family of special functions, and the late-time asymptotics with the use of the path integral formulation.

Abstract:In this talk, we review the heat kernel approach to the Atiyah-Singer index theorem for Dirac operators on closed manifolds, as well as the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theorem for Dirac operators on manifolds with boundary. We also discuss the odd dimensional counterparts of the above results. In particular, we describe a joint result with Xianzhe Dai on an index theorem for Toeplitz operators on odd dimensional manifolds with boundary.

Abstract:Polterovich proved a remarkable closed formula for heat kernel coefficients of the Laplace operator on compact Riemannian manifolds involving powers of Laplacians acting on the distance function. In the case of Kähler manifolds, we prove a combinatorial formula for powers of the complex Laplacian and use it to derive an explicit graph theoretic formula for the numerics in heat coefficients as a linear combination of metric jets based on Polterovich's formula.

Abstract:We derive a Harnack inequality for positive solutions of the f-heat equation and Gaussian upper and lower bound estimates for the f-heat kernel on complete smooth metric measure spaces with Bakry–Émery Ricci curvature bounded below. Both upper and lower bound estimates are sharp when the Bakry–Émery Ricci curvature is nonnegative. The main argument is the De Giorgi–Nash–Moser theory. As applications, we prove an $L_f^1$-Liouville theorem for f-subharmonic functions and an $L_f^1$-uniqueness theorem for f-heat equations when f has at most linear growth. We also obtain eigenvalues estimates and f-Green’s function estimates for the f-Laplace operator.

Abstract:In this thesis we describe a type of metric space called an Euclidean polyhedral complex. We define a Dirichlet form on it; this is used to give a corresponding heat kernel. We provide a uniform small time Poincare inequality for complexes with bounded geometry and use this to determine uniform small time heat kernel bounds via a theorem of Sturm. We then consider such complexes with an underlying finitely generated group structure. We use techniques of Saloff-Coste and Pittet to show a large time asymptotic equivalence for the heat kernel on the complex and the heat kernel on the group.

Abstract:Among those transversally elliptic operators initiated by Atiyah and Singer, Kohn's $\Box_b$ operator on CR manifolds with $S^1$ action is a natural one of geometric significance for complex analysts. Our first main result establishes an asymptotic expansion for the heat kernel of such an operator with values in its Fourier components, which involves an unprecedented contribution in terms of a distance function from lower dimensional strata of the $S^1$-action. Our second main result computes a local index density, in terms of \emph{tangential} characteristic forms, on such manifolds including \emph{Sasakian manifolds} of interest in String Theory, by showing that certain non-trivial contributions from strata in the heat kernel expansion will eventually cancel out by applying Getzler's rescaling technique to off-diagonal estimates. This leads to a local result which can be thought of as a type of local index theorem on these CR manifolds. As applications of our CR index theorem we can prove a CR version of Grauert-Riemenschneider criterion, and produce many CR functions on a weakly pseudoconvex CR manifold with transversal $S^1$ action and many CR sections on some class of CR manifolds, answering (on this class of manifolds) some long-standing questions in several complex variables and CR geometry. We give examples of these CR manifolds, some of which arise from Brieskorn manifolds. Moreover in some cases, without use of equivariant cohomology method nor keeping contributions arising from lower dimensional strata as done in previous works, we can reinterpret Kawasaki's Hirzebruch-Riemann-Roch formula for a complex orbifold with an orbifold holomorphic line bundle, as an index theorem obtained by a single integral over a smooth CR manifold which is essentially the circle bundle of this line bundle.

Abstract:We consider a metric measure space (M, d, mu) and a heat kernel p(t) (x, y) on M satisfying certain upper and lower estimates, which depend on two parameters alpha and beta. We show that under additional mild assumptions, these parameters are determined by the intrinsic properties of the space (M, d, mu). Namely, alpha is the Hausdorff dimension of this space, whereas beta, called the walk dimension, is determined via the properties of the family of Besov spaces W-sigma,W-2 on M. Moreover, the parameters alpha and beta are related by the inequalities 2 less than or equal to beta less than or equal to alpha + 1.We prove also the embedding theorems for the space W-beta/2,W-2, and use them to obtain the existence results for weak solutions to semilinear elliptic equations on M of the form-Lu + f(x, u) = g(x),where C is the generator of the semigroup associated with p(t).The framework in this paper is applicable for a large class of fractal domains, including the generalized Sierpiniski carpet in R-n.

Abstract:We prove that, in a setting of local Dirichlet forms on metric measure spaces, a two-sided sub-Gaussian estimate of the heat kernel is equivalent to the conjunction of the volume doubling property, the elliptic Harnack inequality, and a certain estimate of the capacity between concentric balls. The main technical tool is the equivalence between the capacity estimate and the estimate of a mean exit time in a ball that uses two-sided estimates of a Green function in a ball.

Abstract:We study the law of a hypoelliptic Brownian motion on an infinite-dimensional Heisenberg group based on an abstract Wiener space. We show that the endpoint distribution, which can be seen as a heat kernel measure, is absolutely continuous with respect to a certain product of Gaussian and Lebesgue measures, that the heat kernel is quasi-invariant under translation by the Cameron–Martin subgroup, and that the Radon–Nikodym derivative is Malliavin smooth.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior of the heat kernel with respect to the Witten Laplacian. We introduce the localization and the scaling technique in semi-classical analysis, and study the semi-classical asymptotic behavior of the family of the heat kernel, indexed by $k$, near the critical point $p$ of a given Morse function, as $k\to \infty$. It is shown that this family is approximately close to the heat kernel with respect to a system of the harmonic oscillators attached to $p$. We also furnish some asymptotic results regarding heat kernels away from the critical points. These heat kernel asymptotic results lead to a novel proof of the Morse inequalities.

Abstract:In this paper we provide the small-time heat kernel asymptotics at the cut locus in three relevant cases: generic low-dimensional Riemannian manifolds, generic 3D contact sub-Riemannian manifolds (close to the starting point) and generic 4D quasi-contact sub-Riemannian manifolds (close to a generic starting point). As a byproduct, we show that, for generic low-dimensional Riemannian manifolds, the only singularities of the exponential map, as a Lagragian map, that can arise along a minimizing geodesic are $A_3$ and $A_5$ (in the classification of Arnol'd's school). We show that in the non-generic case, a cornucopia of asymptotics can occur, even for Riemannian surfaces.

Abstract:Abstract The aim of this paper is threefold. First, we obtain the precise bounds for the heat kernel on isotropic Heisenberg groups by using well-known results in the three-dimensional case. Second, we study the asymptotic estimates at infinity for the heat kernel on nonisotropic Heisenberg groups. As a consequence, we give uniform upper and lower estimates of the heat kernel, and complete its short-time behavior obtained by Beals–Gaveau–Greiner. Third, we prove that the uniform asymptotic behaviour at infinity (so the small-time asymptotic behaviour) of the heat kernel for Grushin operators, obtained by the first author, are still valid in two and three dimensions.
