Abstract:Block diagonalisation of matrices by canonical transformation is important in various fields of physics. Such diagonalization is currently of interest in condensed matter physics, for modelling of gates in superconducting circuits and for studying isolated quantum many-body systems. While the block diagonalisation of a particular Hermitian matrix is not unique, it can be made unique with certain auxiliary conditions. It has been assumed in some recent literature that two of these conditions, ``least action" vs. block-off-diagonality of the generator, lead to identical transformations. We show that this is not the case, and that these two approaches diverge at third order in the small parameter. We derive the perturbative power series of the ``least action", exhibiting explicitly the loss of block-off-diagnoality.

Positivity preservers forbidden to operate on diagonal blocks

Abstract:The question of which functions acting entrywise preserve positive semidefiniteness has a long history, beginning with the Schur product theorem [Crelle 1911], which implies that absolutely monotonic functions (i.e., power series with nonnegative coefficients) preserve positivity on matrices of all dimensions. A famous result of Schoenberg and of Rudin [Duke Math. J. 1942, 1959] shows the converse: there are no other such functions. Motivated by modern applications, Guillot and Rajaratnam [Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 2015] classified the entrywise positivity preservers in all dimensions, which act only on the off-diagonal entries. These two results are at "opposite ends", and in both cases the preservers have to be absolutely monotonic. We complete the classification of positivity preservers that act entrywise except on specified "diagonal/principal blocks", in every case other than the two above. (In fact we achieve this in a more general framework.) This yields the first examples of dimension-free entrywise positivity preservers - with certain forbidden principal blocks - that are not absolutely monotonic.

Abstract:Cyclic reduction is a method for the solution of (block-)tridiagonal linear systems. In this note we review the method tailored to hermitian positive definite banded linear systems. The reviewed method has the following advantages: It is numerically stable without pivoting. It is suitable for parallel computations. In the presented form, it uses fewer computations by exploiting symmetry. Like Cholesky, the reviewed method breaks down when the matrix is not positive definite, offering a robust way for determining positive definiteness.

Abstract:We describe all inequalities among generalized diagonals in positive semi-definite matrices. These turn out to be governed by a simple partial order on the symmetric group. This provides an analogue of results of Drake, Gerrish, and Skandera on inequalities among generalized diagonals in totally nonnegative matrices.

Abstract:Let G be a semisimple Lie group with a Cartan decomposition G = K exp($\mathfrak{p}$). For every finite-dimensional representation of G, there is an inner product on the representation space such that with respect to it, K acts as unitary operators, and exp($\mathfrak{p}$) acts as positive definite Hermitian operators. In this paper, we observe that similar phenomena appear for infinite-dimensional representations with real infinitesimal characters.

Abstract:Representations of {1,2,3}-inverses, {1,2,4}-inverses, and Drazin inverse of a partitioned matrix M = [GRAPHICS] related to the generalized Schur complement are studied. First, we give the necessary and sufficient conditions under which {1,2,3}-inverses, {1,2,4}-inverses, and group inverse of a 2 x 2 block matrix can be represented in the Banachiewicz-Schur forms. Some results from the paper of Cvetkovic-ilic, 2009, are generalized. Also, we expressed the quotient property and the first Sylvester identity in terms of the generalized Schur complement.

Abstract:Li (Algebra 71:2823–2838, 2023) recently obtained several improvements on some partial trace inequalities for positive semidefinite block matrices. In this note, we present analogous partial trace inequalities involving partial transpose of positive semidefinite block matrix. The inequalities we show could be regarded as complements of Li's results. In addition, some new partial trace inequalities for partial transpose of positive semidefinite block matrix are included.

Abstract:Hermitian tensors are generalizations of Hermitian matrices, but they have very different properties. Every complex Hermitian tensor is a sum of complex Hermitian rank-1 tensors. However, this is not true for the real case. We study basic properties for Hermitian tensors such as Hermitian decompositions and Hermitian ranks. For canonical basis tensors, we determine their Hermitian ranks and decompositions. For real Hermitian tensors, we give a full characterization for them to have Hermitian decompositions over the real field. In addition to traditional flattening, Hermitian tensors specially have Hermitian and Kronecker flattenings, which may give different lower bounds for Hermitian ranks. We also study other topics such as eigenvalues, positive semidefiniteness, sum of squares representations, and separability.

Abstract:Positive maps are useful for detecting entanglement in quantum information theory. Any entangled state can be detected by some positive map. In this paper, the relation between positive block matrices and completely positive trace-preserving maps is characterized. Consequently, a new method for constructing decomposable maps from positive block matrices is derived. In addition, a method for constructing positive but not completely positive maps from Hermitian block matrices is also obtained.

The Power of Bidiagonal Matrices

Abstract:Bidiagonal matrices are widespread in numerical linear algebra, not least because of their use in the standard algorithm for computing the singular value decomposition and their appearance as LU factors of tridiagonal matrices. We show that bidiagonal matrices have a number of interesting properties that make them powerful tools in a variety of problems, especially when they are multiplied together. We show that the inverse of a product of bidiagonal matrices is insensitive to small componentwise relative perturbations in the factors if the factors or their inverses are nonnegative. We derive componentwise rounding error bounds for the solution of a linear system $Ax = b$, where $A$ or $A^{-1}$ is a product $B_1 B_2\dots B_k$ of bidiagonal matrices, showing that strong results are obtained when the $B_i$ are nonnegative or have a checkerboard sign pattern. We show that given the \fact\ of an $n\times n$ totally nonnegative matrix $A$ into the product of bidiagonal matrices, $\|A^{-1}\|_{\infty}$ can be computed in $O(n^2)$ flops and that in floating-point arithmetic the computed result has small relative error, no matter how large $\|A^{-1}\|_{\infty}$ is. We also show how factorizations involving bidiagonal matrices of some special matrices, such as the Frank matrix and the Kac--Murdock--Szegö matrix, yield simple proofs of the total nonnegativity and other properties of these matrices.

Abstract:A shift splitting concept is introduced and, correspondingly, a shift-splitting iteration scheme and a shift-splitting preconditioner are presented, for solving the large sparse system of linear equations of which the coefficient matrix is an ill-conditioned non-Hermitian positive definite matrix. The convergence property of the shift-splitting iteration method and the eigenvalue distribution of the shift-splitting preconditioned matrix are discussed in depth, and the best possible choice of the shift is investigated in detail. Numerical computations show that the shift-splitting preconditioner can induce accurate, robust and effective preconditioned Krylov subspace iteration methods for solving the large sparse non-Hermitian positive definite systems of linear equations.

Abstract:This paper presents a full rank factorization of a 2×2 block matrix without any restriction concerning the group inverse. Applying this factorization, we obtain an explicit representation of the group inverse in terms of four individual blocks of the partitioned matrix without certain restriction.
