Abstract:We obtain several norm and eigenvalue inequalities for positive matrices partitioned into four blocks. The results involve the numerical range of the off-diagonal block X, especially the distance from 0 to W(X).

Abstract:Block numerical ranges of matrix polynomials, especially the quadratic numerical range, are considered. The main results concern spectral inclusion, boundedness of the block numerical range, an estimate of the resolvent in terms of the quadratic numerical range, geometrical properties of the quadratic numerical range, and inclusion between block numerical ranges of the matrix polynomials for refined block decompositions. As an application, we connect the quadratic numerical range with the localization of the spectrum of matrix polynomials.

Abstract:The main aim of this paper is to generalize matrix numerical ranges to the tensor case based on tensor norms. We show that the basic properties of matrix numerical ranges such as compactness and convexity are valid for tensor numerical ranges. We make use of convexity property to propose an algorithm for approximating tensor numerical ranges in which tensor eigenvalues are contained. Also we consider tensor numerical ranges based on inner products, however, they may not be convex in general.

Abstract:Bi-block symmetric tensors are extensions of elasticity tensors, whose positive definiteness plays an important role in the elasticity theory. In this paper, we establish bi-block $ M $-eigenvalue inclusion intervals of the bi-block symmetric tensors, which are sharper than some existing results. Based on the new sharp inclusion intervals, we give new definitions of bi-block (strictly) diagonally dominant tensor and bi-block symmetric $ B_0 $($ B $)-tensor, and show that both of them are bi-block positive (semi)definite tensors. Then we give some easily checkable sufficient conditions for judging bi-block positive (semi)definiteness of the bi-block symmetric tensor. At last, we give four numerical examples, whose bi-block positive (semi)definiteness can be determined by the new definitions but the existing ones.

We introduce partial generalized matrix functions corresponding to partial traces, and then provide a unified extension of the recent inequalities due to Lin [14], Zhang et al. [19, 4] and Choi [5]. Moreover, we demonstrate the application of a positive semidefinite 3 x 3 block matrix, which motivates us to give alternative proofs of Dragomir's inequality and Krein's inequality.

Abstract:We establish a sharp inequality between the blocks of positive partitioned matrices and conjecture a triangle type inequality for contractions: Given three contactions A,B,C, we conjecture that the constant c=3/4 is sharp in the triangle inequality |A+B+C| < cI + |A| +|B| + |C|.

Abstract:Operator matrices have played a significant role in studying Hilbert space operators. In this paper, we discuss further properties of operator matrices and present new estimates for the operator norms and numerical radii of such operators. Moreover, operator matrices whose real and imaginary parts are positive will be discussed, and sharper bounds will be shown for such class.

Abstract:The paper studies the eigenvalue distribution of some special matrices, including block diagonally dominant matrices and block H-matrices. A well-known theorem of Taussky on the eigenvalue distribution is extended to such matrices. Conditions on a block matrix are also given so that it has certain numbers of eigenvalues with positive and negative real parts.

Abstract:This paper presents some unitarily invariant norm inequalities for commutators and anticommutators of matrices. The obtained results generalize many celebrated results in the literature. Of particular interest, we show further bounds for the usual operator norm, with direct applications to numerical radius bounds. Moreover, we will investigate the class of normal matrices in this direction and obtain further improvements for this class.

Abstract:We investigate when the algebraic numerical range is a $C$-spectral set in a Banach algebra. While providing several counterexamples based on classical ideas as well as combinatorial Banach spaces, we discuss positive results for matrix algebras and provide an absolute constant in the case of complex $2\times2$-matrices with the induced $1$-norm. Furthermore, we discuss positive results for infinite-dimensional Banach algebras, including the Calkin algebra.

Abstract:In this paper, we give the Gershgorin's theorem of the 2 × 2 unbounded block operator matrix with bounded off-diagonal entries, and use the spectrum and the numerical range of diagonal entries to investigatethe spectral inclusion properties of some unbounded block operator matrices. In particular, for unbounded block operator matrices with symmetric (anti-symmetric) corners, we give more exact localization of spectrum by the quadratic numerical range and the Gershgorin's theorem.

Abstract:For a square matrix A of index 1, the block-rank equationrankABCX=rank(A)is studied. Geometrical conditions are given to characterize the solution of this equation. Further, all matrices B and C are described for the solution X=A#, where A# is the group inverse of A. In addition, we extend these results to reflexive generalized inverses. This contributes to a result recently obtained by Wei [SIAM J. Matrix Anal. Appl. 17 (1996) 744] and it is a generalization of a result by Groß [Lin. Alg. Appl. 289 (1999) 127].
